Leaked DGS Localised Names
Most of you will remember that a little while ago, there was a significant leak from Capcom which included documents about an upcoming DGS and DGS2 English translated duology. This leak also contained script boxes and emails which show the “localised” names of some DGS characters- tweaked to look better to English speakers, make puns work in English, or avoid infringing on the Doyle estate’s strict copyright rules. This is a mostly-complete list of how the names are changing, as well as explanation of the puns. Names will be sorted by the case they debuted in, so it should be easy to avoid spoilers, but heads up that some puns may contain hints to certain characters’ fates and roles, etc.
This list won’t include characters who debuted in DGS2. A separate post for them is in the works- as always, remember these are leaks and not necessarily to be trusted.
The Adventure of the Great Departure
No Changes: Taketsuchi Auchi Satoru Hosonaga Susato Mikotoba
Minor Changes: Ryuunosuke Naruhodou -> Ryunosuke Naruhodo (accents removed) Kazuma Asougi -> Kazuma Asogi (accents removed) Yuujin Mikotoba -> Yujin Mikotoba (accents removed) Jezail Brett -> Jezaille Brett (changed to make name more natural) John Watson -> John Wilson (changed to avoid copyright issues)
Major Changes:
Sanmon Sonohigurashi -> Kyurio Korekuta “Sanmon” means “three pennies”, while Sonohigurashi means “to make a living day-by-day”. “Kyurio Korekuta” is a pun on “curio collector”.
Taizou Uzukumaru -> Iyesa Nosa “Uzukumaru” comes from the word for “to crouch”, referring to his identity as a soldier; “Iyesa Nosa” is a pun on “yes sir, no sir”. (His son Koroumaru is now called “Aido Nosa”- “I don’t know, sir”.)

The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band
No Changes: Grimesby Roylott
Minor Changes: Sherlock Holmes -> Herlock Sholmes (changed to avoid copyright issues)
Major Changes: Mitrov Stroganov -> Bif Strongenov “Mitrov” is a pun on “meatloaf”, and beef stroganoff is a Russian dish. “Bif Strongenov” keeps the beef stroganoff pun, but adds “strong” into the mix.
Nikomina Borschevic -> Nikolina Pavlova “Nikomina” is a Slavic-sounding name, and “Borschevic” is a pun on “borscht”, another Russian dish. “Nikolina” is an actual Slavic name, and “pavlova” is both a dessert and a reference to the Russian ballerina it was named for.
Dmitri Demiglaski -> Vilen Bolshevic “Dmitri” is a Russian name, and “demi-glace” is a type of sauce. “Vilen” is a pun on “villain”, and “Bolshevic” is a pun on “Bolsheviks”, the political faction which ruled Soviet Russia.
The Adventure of the Runaway Room
No Changes: Barok van Zieks Gina Lestrade Beppo
Minor Changes: Mortar Milverton -> Mason Milverton (changed to make name more natural) Oscar Fairplay -> Bruce Fairplay (...I have no idea why this changed) Adam Ladyfirst -> Lay D. Furst (changed to make name... less natural??)
Major Changes: Hart Vortex -> Mael Stronghart “Hart” sounds like “heart”, and a “vortex” is... well, a vortex, a centre around which fluid revolves in a spiral. “Mael-strong” sounds like “maelstrom”, another word for a vortex/whirlpool, and his surname is a pun on “strong heart”.
Cosney Megundal -> Magnus McGilded His Japanese name is a pun on “kozeni megundaru”, meaning “I’ll spare you some change”. “Magnus” is a Latin word meaning “big” or “great”, “gilded” refers to something covered in gold, and the “Mc” is because the localisation is going to make him Irish, supposedly.
The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro
No Changes: Tobias Gregson John Garrideb Joan Garrideb
Minor Changes: Iris Watson -> Iris Wilson (changed to avoid copyright issues) Souseki Natsume -> Soseki Natsume (accents removed) Viridian Green -> Olive Green (changed to make name more natural)
Major Changes: Patrick & Rola O’Malley -> Roly & Patricia Beate “Pat” and “Rola” sounds like “patroller”; “Patricia” and “Roly” keeps the pun, although it reverses the names. “Beate” is a play on “beat”, the area which a policeman patrols.
The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story
Minor Changes: Egg Benedict -> Eggert Benedict (changed to make name more natural) Hatch Windibank -> Pop Windibank (changed to make pun work- “pop in the bank”)
Major Changes: Robert Crogley -> Ashley Graydon “Crogley” sounds similar to “kuro-gure” meaning “black-grey”, and the pun is preserved with “ash gray”. Incidentally, Ashley was a man’s name in the UK at the time DGS is set.
Nemmy & Tully Tinpillar -> Nash & Ringo Skulkin “Nemmy” sounds like “nemui”, meaning “tired”; “Tully” sounds like “tari”, meaning “happy”. “Tinpillar” comes from “chinpira” meaning “hoodlum”. “Skulkin” sounds both like “skull” (a motif in the brothers’ designs) and “skulking” (ie. keeping suspiciously out of sight), although I can’t find any obvious pun in “Nash” and “Ringo”.

When you realize once again some of your favorite seiyuu legends are already 50+ years old...
1. Keiji Fujiwara (Oct 5, 1964 - 55 years old)
Yes, he has a lot other roles under his belt besides Ardyn, and heck, I’m still salty toward FF15, and to be honest, he’s not the greatest villain in my opinion (based only on the base game, as I haven’t played any of the DLCs, including Episode Ardyn), but Ardyn is one of his recent roles and I just want to shout out to his awesome portrayal of the character. It was another reason why I so wanted to play this game in Japanese.
Keiji Fujiwara is that seiyuu you’d often hear everywhere. Like, I would watch some anime and he would appear in maybe 3 out of 5 of them. My current favorite is Maes Hughes, because I just finished re-watching FMA Brotherhood, and his death killed me again!! His other roles that I remember are Hattori Zenzou from Gintama, Ladd Russo from Baccano, Ali Al-Saachez from Gundam 00, Higuchi from Tatami Galaxy, Shiro Fujimoto from Ao no Exorcist, Hannes from Attack on Titan, Brody from Kekkai Sensen, and lots more that I haven’t seen or might have forgotten. But, let’s not forget that he also voiced Axel and Lea in Kingdom Hearts! He is also the voice of Reno in the FF7 Compilation and the upcoming Remake (in which he sounds much, much younger but still awesome)! And also Izana Kunagiri in FF Type-0 (I haven’t played the game haha, but I saw him on the trailers).
2. Akira Ishida (Nov 2, 1967 - 52 years old)
I debated between putting Katsura or Natori there (two of my favorite Ishida roles), and ended up deciding to go with Zura, because to me, nothing really beats Ishida-san’s role as him. This...idiotic of a man that acts as the leader of an anti-government group. He raps. He cross-dresses. All the antics he gets up to. And just his overall stupidity! Like, seriously! His interactions with Gintoki and Kagura and the things he got up to to hide from the Shinsengumi xD (but he’s cool when he fights--his one and only redeeming quality lol). Some of his other roles that I know are Natori Shuuichi from Natsume Yuujinchou, Keiji Mogami from Mob Psycho 100, Kaworu Nagisa from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Myoe/Inari from Kyousougiga, Hideo Shimada from Parasyte, Femto from Kekkai Sensen, Fyodor Dostoyevsky from Bungou Stray Dogs, Touji Souya from Sangatsu no Lion, and others I have not seen.
Anyway, I learned that among the seiyuu, Ishida Akira-san is considered to be a “cool person”. In that one Gintama interview I saw, even the main casts + Suzuken regarded him as the “cool Ishida-san”. And then in a radio clip somewhere else, someone asked Sugita whether he had seen Ishida laugh, to which Sugita said that “the cool Ishida-san” laughed when he was recording an episode of Gintama that they had to redo the take (lol). On top of that, I have heard him voice an old man, an old woman, and then that one clip I heard of him voice all gender of all ages! There’s only one thing I have to say to that right now:
ALL HAIL ISHIDA AKIRA-SAMA!!!
3. Shinichiro Miki (Mar 18, 1968 - 51 years old)
I wasn’t much of a fan of this guy...not until I hear him as Roy, Monogatari’s Deishuu Kaiki, and Sangatsu no Lion’s Kai Shimada--all of which I have only seen in the last 3 years. I first heard him in Escaflowne, and after that, I only hear him as ikemen guys. Nothing wrong with that, but his roles never really captivated me, until I saw those three.
I rarely hear him in the anime I watch, though when I do, they are often anime that I end up loving. Sometimes I mistake him with Junichi Suwabe, especially whenever I hear Kaiki speak in Monogatari. And then, I came across him in Gintama as Sakamoto...and I never hear that voice in any other anime again lololol. Also, he is currently the voice of Sir Nighteye in BnHA Season 4, and with Miyake Kenta as All Might, it just came to me that Roy and Scar are in BnHA as hero-sidekicks/friends xD

As tagged by @rinkafushi, so I figured I should do it before I fall back into my old habits of completely failing at human interaction. XD
(My inspiration does not currently extend to coming up with a new set of questions, but if you see this and want to join the fun, feel free to consider yourself tagged for this set. :D)
1. What’s the dumbest/most unlucky way you’ve ever managed to injure yourself?
Weeelll I think this is according to a slightly different definition of dumb, but when I was studying abroad in Japan, I’d joined the aikido club, and for our end-of-semester practice we had a horrifyingly long practice that started with knee-walking across the entire dojo twice.
As a result of which, I literally wore small patches of skin off both knees. XD
2. Chamomile tea, yay or nay?
Mmmm. :9 I don’t drink it often because I’m terrible at remembering to prepare any sort of tea, but it’s wonderful and soothing when I do remember.
3. What was the first fandom you participated in/really got into?
Ahahaha I think I started feeling fannish about either Pokemon or Ocarina of Time first, but my first sustained fanfic-writing fandom (and longest-lived tbh) was Sailor Moon~~
I didn’t really join fandom interactions until Natsume, though. <3
4. What was the most outrageous lie you’ve ever told and did you get away with it?
Ahahahaha. I am terrible at lying so I try to avoid it as much as humanly possible. XD
I guess for outrageous, when i was five? younger? I have this very vague memory of kicking my brother ... somewhere unfortunate, and then trying to get out of it by saying that I’d been trying to kick him in the crutch, which was totally different.
(.... ..... Yeah, I have no idea either. XD)
5. If you could get a/another pet, what would it be?
Ahahaha if it moves and has fur I am allergic to it, and have zero interest in anything else, and I have enough trouble bothering to take care of myself. XD So I’ll pass on pets, thanks.
Maybe a robot cat, if we ever got to the point where robot pets were (a) a thing, (b) hypoallergenic, and (c) did not actually require being taken care of in any way other than occasionally emotionally. XD
6. What’s the movie/show you can quote best? Examples welcome!
Pffft probably Spaceballs, if we’re going to be honest. XD
“Comb the desert!” *switches to image of minions dragging 8-foot-tall combs across sand dunes*
“Raspberry? Only one man would dare give me the raspberry. *slams helmet shut* LONE STAR.”
“Tell me the combination for the planetary shield!” “All right, all right ... It’s ... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” “1, 2, 3, 4, 5? That’s the kind of combination an idiot would have on their luggage!” ... *grand leader character enters* “So, do you have the combination?” “Yes, sir! It’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” “1, 2, 3, 4, 5? That’s the same combination I have on my luggage!”
“My hair? They shot my hair? Son of a [bleep]” *takes gun* *promptly wipes out all available enemies*
“They’ve gone to plaid!”

7. What subject did you hate most in elementary school?
PE for sure. :D I was so proud of the one semester I managed to get an A-. :’D
8. If you get lost in an unfamiliar part of the city, are you the kind who’ll stubbornly try to find the right way on their own or the type to ask passerbys for directions?
Ahaha depends on how lost I am, I suspect. If I know I’m near a highway / landmark I know how to navigate from and am just not exactly sure where, I’ll just flail around for a while without bothering to look up an exact route. And since I try to have my smartphone on me at all times, that’s usually my first port of call if I’m genuinely lost.
If I didn’t have my smartphone on me, I’d probably try to find a gas station or something? I’m not morally opposed to asking directions, I just have a decent sense of direction and usually don’t go to completely unfamiliar places. :’)
9. Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Any success in keeping them? Asking for a friend
Hahaha. :D I used to, not so much recently. Partly because I’ve started trying to be better about going ahead and making the changes I want to make regardless of time of year, but mostly because if I call them ~resolutions~ then I feel guilty if I break them (or something else I want to do more comes along, or whatever). And attempting to excise self-inflicted guilt from my list of most-commonly-used emotions has been on my list of goals for several years now. so. :D
So I like to reframe it as, hm. A loose set of things that I would like to see myself doing during the coming year. This year it’s probably:
- Keep up with my language learning via Duolingo (maybe look into Memrise?); ideally get to the point where I can start reading actual stuff in Russian (by way of looking up 80% of the words constantly hahaha why do I do this to myself ;______;)
- Actually make a dent in my backlog of to-watch anime / to-read manga, start trying to forge my way through some light novels again.
- Keep up ~current rate of reading books in English
- Play some video games too, it’s been too longggg
- Be better about actually sending the handful of original short stories I’ve written out on submission, maybe write a few more? (hahaha ;____;)
- Try to figure out what my brain has been doing w.r.t. making it so much harder to write recently, see if I can work through that block and start making actual satisfying progress on an original novel.
- But also be better about not forcing myself to write if it’s really not working - instead, make myself actually sit down and try to figure out why. :P
- Try to figure out some sort of way to be involved in making the world a better place that doesn’t just completely emotionally exhaust me and turn me into a bitter, cynical husk. (tw: cyan reluctantly cares about politics)
- STOP STRESSING OUT ALL THE TIME.
- STOP FEELING OVERWHELMED ALL THE TIME.
... So we’ll see how well all that goes. hahaha. XD
10. Do you have a favourite language to listen to with music? Or just in general?
95% of my music is in either English or Japanese, and I’ve mostly been listening to the Japanese music these last several years.
Although I have to make special mention of this delightful video that @izumisays posted a while back, which is a rewrite of the lyrics to the Russian Eurovision entry last year ... so that the lyrics reflect what occurs in the video. :D :D :D
I only know enough Russian to recognize maybe 10% of the words, but that’s what the English subtitles are for. :D :D :D :D
11. What’s the last song that got stuck in your head?��
Whatever I’ve listened to most recently that I either like or know reasonably well, tbh. XD It’s really easy to get something stuck in my head.
Sooo, since I just finished listening to the ridiculous Russian video, currently that. :D (~что мой - только один~ XD)
