What to do if you’re dealing with debt
Dealing with debt can be difficult!
If you dealing with debt, or have a family member who is, it can be the loneliest place to be and no matter how resilient you are, eventually it will wear you down. However, there are strategies you can adopt to alleviate the situation and get yourself back on track. - Talk to someone. Acknowledging the burden and seeking help is the first step towards breaking out of the frightening spiral. A professional debt adviser can help you discover your options. There are a number of different organisations such as Citizens Advice Service (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) and the National Debtline (www.nationaldebtline.org) who can offer immediate support with advice. - Make a list of your debts. Open any correspondence that you have been ignoring and tally up everything you owe. Decide, with help from the organisations above, which debts are most pressing and prioritise them. - Be proactive. Get in touch with those companies to whom you owe money. Not only will it help you feel more in control, but it gives you a chance to seek an agreed payment plan to pay a set amount per month that you can afford and start reducing your debt. - See what you’re entitled to. If your income has been reduced because of the loss of your job for example, there may be benefits that you are entitled to claim that could help your situation. Organisations such as Moneyhelper (www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/benefits), provided by HM Government, can show you what you can get and how to apply. - Debt Respite Scheme (Breathing Space) – You can get temporary respite in England & Wales from creditors for up to 60 days by applying via a debt adviser. They cannot add interest or charges to your debt, or contact you, and no enforcement action can be taken against you during the ‘breathing space’. Find out more about it here –https://www.gov.uk/options-for-dealing-with-your-debts/breathing-space If you’re struggling dealing with debt, don’t suffer in silence. There are organisations out there specifically to help you, and if you need assistance, we can help to point you in their direction – just let us know. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other debt secured on it. The National Debt Helpline Number is there for you to contact when it requires someone to speak to you about debt. This is accessible to all US citizens and absolutely free. You simply have to decide on the national debt helpline, choose an appropriate toll free number, and then top that off with a compelling, short, buildings-fronted promise.
It's quite amazing how just a few straightforward phone calls can totally transform your business and relationships with your creditors. For example, if you've been receiving collection calls or letters then by all means, get in touch with your creditors and express your willingness to repay the money you owe. But don't overdo it or mention how you've already spoken to them and they've accepted your repayment offer. Simply carry out your promised debt relief action and in no time at all, you will have stopped the calls, letters and collectors from bothering you further.
Another debt relief tactic you can use to manage your outstanding accounts successfully is called the new engine. Yes, it's a new term and it means a different task altogether. The NELA debt relief system is actually a set of measures aimed at improving your credit rating, thereby alleviating you of your financial woes once and for all. All that you have to do to implement this measure is to subscribe to the NELA plan. The process involves four elements, which include:
The National Debtline number is where you can begin your search for an appropriate NELA loan management program. When you have reached this number, all you have to do is give your creditor and your financial institution a call and inform them that you are on the verge of filing for bankruptcy and that you need professional help in terms of your debt relief order. The onus then is on the lender to work with you to come up with a suitable debt consolidation plan that suits both parties. You can be rest assured that the creditors will be willing to renegotiate and agree to do whatever is necessary in order to get some portion of their money back from you.
The second component of the new loan management program is to enroll in a debt consolidation program. Here you can seek help from debt consolidation specialists who can help you find the right debt consolidation company for you. You can then proceed to fill out the application form, thereby giving the relevant information required by the agency. Once this is done, you can expect an immediate response from the agency and you can expect your debts to be consolidated. Your credit score will gradually improve and you will soon find yourself in a much better financial situation.

Cheapest gas and electricity providers in the UK - Bristol Live
Energy bills are about to sky-rocket, with a rise of 54 per cent on the way in April.
It's Ofgem's highest ever rise to the energy cap, as it seeks to protect gas and energy suppliers - such as British Gas and EDF - going out of business.
However, it does mean consumers will be paying record amounts for their gas and electricity. So what can we do to protect ourselves? How can we keep prices down? And what's the cheapest provider in the UK? The answers to all of those questions and more are below.
Why is the energy cap going up?
A number of factors are to blame, many of them global, some of them specific to Britain. Globally, western economies have emerged from lockdowns at broadly the same time, bringing with them an increase in demand for goods, travel, and other services that require energy. Increased demand, of course, means a higher price.
The UK has been particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in energy prices as the government took the decision not to subsidise the Rough gas storage facility in the north sea. We are therefore more reliant than other countries on imports from abroad.
All this has sent the wholesale price of energy through the roof, meaning the producers - BP, Shell, and the like - get huge profits and the suppliers - British Gas, Bulb, etc - are having to pay more for their energy than they can charge us. Hence the cap rise.
How much is the energy price cap going up by?
The energy price cap is going from £1,277 to £1,971, which is a rise of £693, or 54 per cent.
Consumers must also remember that the cap is not a definitive limit on total bills - it actually applies per unit of energy. The stated amount applies to the typical household - so if you use more energy than the average household, you could end up paying more than the stated £1,971.
Which energy provider is cheapest?
We used Which?'s gas and electricity calculator for a property using an average amount of energy in central Bristol. Utility Warehouse came out as the cheapest, with a quote for £1,253.26. That's followed by So Energy (£1,315.47), Utilita (£1,317.17), Ovo Energy (£1,318.08), and SSE Southern Electric (also £1,318.08).
Be warned, it may or may not be worth you switching, depending on your current deal. Money Saving Expert says you should only consider switching if you can find a price fix no more than 44 per cent more expensive than what you're paying right now. That's because the amount you're paying is likely to increase by 54 per cent in just under two months' time.
How many people will be affected by the cap hike?
Ofgem, the energy regulator, says the rise will affect 22 million households in the UK.
What other help is available?
Ofgem recommends customers struggling to pay their bills to speak to their provider as soon as possible. Your provider may grant you a payment break or be able to arrange an alternative payment plan.
You may also be eligible for the winter fuel payment or the warm home discount. Additionally, the national debtline may be able to grant you 60 days' "breathing space" from debt repayments to get your finances in order.
In October, the government will force energy suppliers to reduce people's bills by £200 per household. This will, however, need to be repaid to the tune of £40 per year over the next five years. The scheme has led to some critics calling it the chancellor's "payday loan".

What is a CCJ? Your Top 5 Questions Answered
1. What is a CCJ?
Many people are aware ‘CCJ’ is shorthand for ‘County Court Judgement’. But this knowledge can sometimes create even more misconceptions around what is a CCJ. Because it’s a document issued by the court, some of our clients originally contacted us believing they have been accused of quite serious crimes. And whilst CCJ’s should be taken seriously, it’s important not to panic and make them into a bigger issue than they usually are.
In fact, the Registry Trust announced that between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2020 475,808 CCJ’s were issued! To put that in context, that’s roughly the number of recorded UK Covid-19 cases from 1st January 2020 – 1st October the same year.
But what is a CCJ? Quite simply, a CCJ is a judgement from the court saying you owe a debt to a creditor you must pay within 30 days. A CCJ can be issued for any amount, even 1p (and yes that does happen!).
If you don’t pay the debt in 30 days it will go on your credit file for 6 years, impacting your ability to claim finance for loans or mortgages, and even prevent your chances of getting certain jobs. As such, a CCJ should be treated seriously regardless of the size of debt attached to it.
For those looking to remove a CCJ, we would strongly recommend reading our ‘how to remove a CCJ’ article as simply paying the debt does not solve the problem once you have crossed the 30 day deadline.
2. Can I go to prison for not paying the debt attached to a CCJ
Once people have answered their first question ‘what is a CCJ?’, this is typically their next question. There are three parts to cover when answering this question.
Firstly, no, not for not paying the debt. This is important to be aware of as some claimants will suggest you could.
Secondly, you can go to prison if you ignore the letters the court sends you. We need to stress that this is extremely rare however and is punishment for ignoring the court, not refusing the pay the debt.
This typically happens if the claimant applies to take the debt directly from your wages via an attachment of earnings. This is seen as a last resort to recover the debt so if you ignore these letters a bailiff can be appointed to bring you to court where a fine and 14 day prison sentence can be issued by the judge.
Lastly, there are some debts you can go to prison for if you fail to meet the payment deadlines, however these would not result in a CCJ. Despite these not resulting in a CCJ, they are still debts against your name and can make people incorrectly believe they fall under the umbrella of a CCJ.
For this reason we have detailed below the types of debts NOT covered by a CCJ that CAN lead to a prison sentence;
Criminal Fines
Business Rates
Council Tax in England
Child maintenance arrears
If you have received letters concerning any of these debts, you need to stop searching for what a CCJ is and seek legal advice immediately.
3. Can you remove a CCJ?
Yes, absolutely but it’s not guaranteed or easy. The ability to remove a CCJ typically hinges on 3 core factors;
Have you already paid the debt? If so, this could make it harder as a judge will see the matter was settled and a waste of the courts time
How quickly did you respond to the CCJ? A judge will take into account how quickly you act so move fast!
Why did you not pay the debt off or respond to the initial letters? If you can prove you didn’t receive the letters and were unaware of the debt you stand a very good chance of having the CCJ removed
Everything is based on your personal situation and how effective you are at arguing your case in front of a judge however.
At Lender & Court we provide a free case assessment to review all these factors to provide honest advice on the likelihood of having your CCJ removed. So we always recommend speaking to one of our specialists to understand your situation and advise what you should do next.
The good news is that because you’ve started asking ‘what is a CCJ’, rather than just accepting it, you’ve instantly improved your chances of getting it removed. And whilst there are no guarantees, you’re certainly taking the right first steps.
4. You can’t get a mortgage if you have a CCJ on your credit file
False! Although it is much more likely you’ll be declined. Even if you do manage to get a mortgage, the lender is very likely to give you far less favourable terms than if the CCJ wasn’t there. This could mean higher interest rates or less money is made available to borrow.
This is just one of the many reasons you should have a CCJ removed.
5. A CCJ is for life
This is another misconception. A CCJ will remain on your credit file for up to 6 years. After that, if the debt is still not paid the claimant can request the judgement is extended resulting in it staying in place for a further 6 years.
Finally…
If you receive a CCJ, or are struggling to repay a debt, don’t bury your head in the sand. It’s great you’ve asked ‘what is a CCJ’, but these issues never go away as many companies simply ‘sell’ old debts to debt collection agencies whose sole business model is based on chasing you down.
If you are struggling financially you can get free debt advice from the StepChange, National Debtline, and Citizens Advice.
If you simply didn’t know about the debt and have uncovered the CCJ after being declined finance, a job, or you’ve received a backlog of late letters, contact our team today to fully understand your options before making a quick decision that could make things worse.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) – @TfLTPH Update: Further advice for taxi and private hire licensees
This Notice replaces TPH Notice 02-20 (published 19 February 2020) and has been issued in response to a number of announcements made by the Government regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19).
We understand that these are challenging and uncertain times for everyone, including taxi and private hire licensees. Transport for London (TfL) staff are doing everything they can to maintain transport services and we appreciate everything the taxi and private hire industries are contributing to keeping London moving.
We are working hard to maintain our licensing function with a priority placed on licence renewals and our ability to act on intelligence to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
During this time we will be working with a reduced number of staff, so we would ask that you only contact us if it is essential. On 16 March 2020, the Government announced a series of measures to continue its efforts to delay the spread of Coronavirus and Public Health England also updated its advice.
The key changes are as follows:
• Revised guidance for households with possible Coronavirus infection:https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance.
• Social gatherings and crowded places should be avoided. This includes
pubs, clubs and theatres.
• Pregnant women, people over the age of 70 and those with certain health conditions should consider this advice particularly important.
• People in at-risk groups (as above) will be asked within days to stay home for several weeks.
Public Health England is the lead agency and is providing regularly updated information to the public on Coronavirus, including the current situation in the UK and information about the virus and its symptoms. You can access the most up-to-date information here and here.
What this means for you
As outlined above, the revised guidance for households with possible Coronavirus infection, including self-isolation is provided here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance.
It is essential that all licensees follow the advice from Public Health England. To continue to work as a taxi or private hire driver or leave the house when you have been advised not to would put you and those you come into contact with at risk.
All licensees are required to inform us of a material change to their medical status and this would include testing positive for Coronavirus. For the safety of licensees and the general public it will be necessary for us to temporarily suspend the licence of any driver that tests positive for Coronavirus. However, no action will be required by licensees to have their licence reinstated once this isolation period has ended and they can return to normal activities.
Preventative Measures
The Government is clear that the single most important thing each of us can do is continue to follow basic hygiene advice. This hygiene advice, on protecting yourself and preventing the spread of the disease, has not changed. It is important that you:
• Cough or sneeze into a tissue or the crook of your elbow
• Wash your hands regularly or, if you are unable to, use hand sanitiser
• Practice good hygiene
• If you feel unwell, stay at home and contact the NHS online by visiting https://111.nhs.uk/service/covid-19
This information can be viewed here.
Public Health England continue to urge everyone to wash their hands regularly throughout the day: after using the toilet, before eating and when arriving at work or home. It is believed that the virus can be passed on through contaminated surfaces, which is why washing hands is so important.
We continue to follow the guidance of Public Health England and advise all licensees, including taxi and private hire drivers, to follow these simple and sensible steps at all times to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
We also encourage licensees to take simple measures, such as regularly cleaning frequently touched surfaces in vehicles, e.g. door handles, window controls and seat belts, regularly with sanitising wipes or spray to get rid of germs. We would also advise washing hands or using sanitising gel after handling cash. Taxi drivers should also regularly clean card payment devices. Licensees who share a taxi or private hire vehicle should regularly clean the steering wheel and instruments.
Contact details
All licensees are required to ensure the contact details (email and telephone) provided to Transport for London (Taxi and Private Hire) are up to date. This enables us to provide you with important regulatory information. In light of the current circumstances, we urge all taxi and private hire drivers, taxi and private hire vehicle owners and private hire operators to check we have the most up to date contact details. Please email any updated contact details – with your driver licence number in the subject heading – to [email protected]
We would expect all private hire operators to fully cooperate with any enquiries they may receive from Public Health England or any other relevant agencies and ask that TfL is informed of details of any drivers that have tested positive for Coronavirus. We would also ask that taxi app providers and radio circuits also take a similar approach to informing TfL.
4 Health, wellbeing and financial circumstances
As the licensing authority and regulator for London's taxi and private hire services, we take the health and wellbeing of licensees seriously. We recognise these are challenging and unsettling times.
If you are struggling with mental health issues, please seek medical help from the wide range of help and support services that are provided by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. We want licensees to feel empowered to seek professional support when necessary, for both their physical and mental health and we have created a licensee health and wellbeing webpage to raise awareness of some of the services, guidance and support that is available.
This includes the Money Advice Trust, a national charity helping people across the UK to tackle their debts and manage their money with confidence. It offers free, independent and confidential advice on personal debt and Business Debtline, the UK's only free dedicated debt advice service for people who are self-employed and other small business owners.
Other resources are available to find out about financial support that the Government is offering, including: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/support-for-those-affected-by-covid-19 and https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19/covid-19-support-for-businesses
In recognition of the current situation, the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has announced that a three-month finance payment holiday initiative has been agreed by LEVC and Black Horse (finance). TX drivers on any existing Black Horse finance contract can register their interest for a three-month suspension of repayments by completing their details at: www.levc.com/payment-holiday.
Knowledge of London and Topographical testing
As a sensible precaution, in response to Government guidance, we are reviewing arrangements for undertaking these assessments. Applicants who have a booking may be contacted by us in the coming days to cancel the appointment.
Ridesharing
Again, as a sensible precaution in response to Government guidance, we have written to all private hire vehicle operators that offer ridesharing services and advise that, in the current circumstances, these services should be suspended. We have now received confirmation from these operators that ridesharing services have been suspended.
Further updates
While the above advice is current at the time of writing, please regularly check the Public Health England, Government and NHS websites for updated information.
We continue to liaise with trade representatives and large PHV operators and will provide further information to licensees, in the form of TPH Notices, as and when appropriate.

The High Risk of Using Credit Repair Cards
Many people do not realize that they have damaged credit until they have been turned down for loans and other credit as a result of a low score.
Others who have not paid much attention to being diligent in making their payments in the past are now realizing the benefit of having a good credit rating in the borrowing power that it gives them. As a result they turn to credit repair cards in an effort to bring up their credit scores in a very short time and in so doing are taking a very high risk.
Credit repair cards offer a low line of credit that consumers can use and repay, thus helping them rebuild the reputation they have of damaged credit. Such cards are designed for consumers who have had county judgements or bankruptcy charges as well as those who do not have a good record of making their monthly payments on time and have missed payments.
The current recession has also led to a high number of consumers having to resort to this measure due to lost income that makes it impossible for them to maintain their high credit scores.
The APR on credit repair cards is very high. If you only make the minimum monthly payment required, it may not even be enough to cover the interest charged on the account and this could put the account over the limit. The advertisements of the credit repair card providers allege that by making your payments on time, you will be rewarded with lower interest charges and a raise in the credit limit on the card.
You only have to look at the interest rates charged by such providers, which include Barclaycard, Capital One, SAV Credit and Vanquis to see the exorbitant charges of 35% to 40% interest.
A standard credit card charges about 16% interest and there are those that have interest rates less than 10%.
Consumers who run up the credit limit on their credit repair card can ultimately run into severe financial difficulty as the interest each month gobbles up the payment making it virtually impossible to repay any of the outstanding balance.
According to Ricky Bruce of Moneyfacts, this sector of the credit card industry is almost impossible to monitor. “Many providers don’t provide us with interest rates because they don’t want the spotlight thrown on them,” he says. “It makes it impossible for consumers to hunt down the best deals.”
A representative of the charity National Debtline, Betsy Boden Wilks offers consumers advice about taking out credit repair cards. She says they should consider other options, which include asking for an overdraft on existing loans or credit cards or asking for a note to be added to your credit record explaining your individual circumstances at the time.
She adds, “It may be the case that you’ve had an excellent credit record in the past, but due to redundancy you’ve fallen into difficulties. As a result, the lender may look more favourably on any application.”
With Vanquis credit repair cards, the typical APR is 39.9%, but some borrowers have been charged a whopping 59% interest. The amount of interest that you do pay on such accounts is closely tied to your current credit score. So, instead of making things better, you run the risk of making things a lot worse.

It’s My Report – Credit agencies respond
The It’s My Report campaign, calling for free access to clearer credit scores, launched at the end of last year and received over 15,000 supporting signatures from the public. So what comes next? As well as gathering more signatures and drumming up more support we’ve taken your signatures and comments to the three credit reference agencies, lenders, regulators, and the Government. It’s My Report calls for Free annual credit reports and scores Lenders should give a specific reason if you’re rejected because of your credit report, along with a free copy of the report used Standardised credit scoring between the credit agencies Credit reference agencies respond Experian told us… “We welcome any move that promotes the importance of understanding and checking credit reports. We offer a range of credit report services for people with different needs, including a 30-day free trial of our CreditExpert service so they can view their credit report and score as well as free reports for anyone receiving debt counselling from a charity such as National Debtline. “We invest a great deal in consumer education and we work closely with banks and lenders to help people better understand issues such as credit scoring and credit refusal.” Callcredit told us… “A credit report is like your financial passport. Companies look at your credit report all the time and make decisions about you based on this information, from approving a mortgage application to giving you a mobile phone contract. “We believe consumers need to get into the habit of doing the same and think it’s only right they have ready access to the personal information these important decisions are based on. We want to make sure every adult in the UK has free access to their personal credit report whenever they want it.” Equifax told us… “Equifax welcomes any initiative that seeks to improve consumer understanding of the information held by credit reference agencies, and the steps that can be taken if an individual believes there is an error. We suggest that consumers review their credit report at least once per year and consider doing so before making a new application for credit. “This will enable them to take action where needed and put them in the best possible position. In particular, the company welcomes any impact the uSwitch campaign can achieve in encouraging lenders to give specific reasons when declining an individual’s credit application, if the lender states that it was because of their credit report. “We are already working with a number of lenders in providing access to Equifax credit report services for their customers as part of this process. Equifax is also continuing to provide free credit reports to individuals facing financial difficulties – through the not-for-profit debt advice services.” The 2015 roundtable discussion Having the credit agencies express interest is a great start, but there’s a big difference between words and action. So our next step is to organise a roundtable discussion with key figures from the consumer credit industry. We hope this will get the people with the power to make a difference to listen to what you want and find a way to make it happen. A basic bank account is an account people can use even if they have trouble qualifying for regular bank accounts because of a poor credit rating. If you have a poor credit rating and are having trouble being accepted for a current account, a basic bank account could be a good option. Read these top 6 tips to find out about basic bank accounts.
1. Find out if you qualify for a standard account first
It's best to use a basic bank account as a last resort, because they have fewer benefits than regular current accounts. You will be given a cash machine card for ATMs and you may also have a debit card with which to make purchases. But basic bank accounts do not allow overdrafts and there may also be a monthly fee to keep it open. You will also not earn interest on your balance.
2. Show you are reliable
Using a basic bank account properly can help you to build up to a more stable financial situation. One thing you can do to improve your trust with the account provider is to arrange for your income to go straight into your basic bank account. This will help if you want to upgrade your account at a later date, as it builds up a certain level of trust with the provider.
3. Budget very carefully
The differences between a basic bank account and a standard account mean that you need to budget effectively and watch all outgoings. Basic bank accounts will not honour direct debits if you don't have the money in your account. If a direct debit payment cannot go out this could lead to you being charged, the direct debit being cancelled or even your whole account being closed by the provider.
4. You can apply even if you have very bad credit rating
Basic bank accounts are very safe for providers to offer because it is not possible for them to lose money on them. Therefore, these types of account are available for virtually everyone. Even if you have been made bankrupt or have CCJs you may well be able to open an account. Even though they may have to check your credit rating, even with a very bad rating you will probably still be approved for a basic bank account. If you are not approved, there is still an option - the 'one bank account', which accepts all applicants regardless of their credit history.
5. Consider ditching the credit card
Many people find they tend to overspend or make unwise purchases when paying by card, which they wouldn't do if they were paying in cold hard cash. This is because it can seem as though it isn't real money when paying by card. Having to withdraw money and pay for items with cash often leads to a more considered approach so, if you are one of these people, you could be helped by signing up to a basic bank account which does not offer a bank card. This way, you may find yourself saving more money each month.
6. Get good advice
If you are struggling with debts or a bad credit rating then you can gain free, impartial advice from organisations such as the National Debtline, Citizens' Advice Bureaux and the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. Companies like wells fargo is the best option. Check out wells fargo mortgage customer service number
