Leading Candidates The Next Pope: Who Are The Frontrunners to Succeed Pope Francis?
Source
Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines)
Tumblr media
Currently the betting favorite at 3:1 odds, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, 67, is considered a strong contender to continue Pope Francis's progressive agenda.
Tagle, an advocate for inclusion and evangelization, has significant experience leading the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and was a trusted figure in Francis's inner circle.
AN: upon further research he heavily opposes abortion and same sex marriage
Pietro Parolin (Italy)
Tumblr media
At 4:1 odds, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, 70, is one of the most experienced Vatican officials. In his role as the Vatican's Secretary of State since 2013, he has played a major part in diplomatic affairs, including sensitive negotiations with China and Middle Eastern governments.
Parolin is seen as a moderate theological candidate, someone who could provide stability while still maintaining some of Francis's reforms. His deep ties to Vatican bureaucracy make him a strong contender for those who favor continuity.
Peter Turkson (Ghana)
Tumblr media
Currently at 5:1 odds in betting markets, Cardinal Peter Turkson, 76, is a well-known figure in the Church's social justice circles. As former head of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Turkson has been vocal on issues such as climate change, poverty and economic justice.
Turkson's election would mark a historic moment as the first African pope in centuries. The most recent African pontiff was Pope Gelasius, who served from 492 to 496 AD. Born in Rome to African parents, Gelasius was known for his extensive theological writings and strong advocacy for charity and justice for the poor.
Peter Erdő (Hungary)
Tumblr media
A leading conservative candidate, Cardinal Peter Erdő, 72, is currently at 6:1 odds. A respected canon law scholar, Erdő has been a strong advocate for traditional Catholic teachings and doctrine. He previously served as head of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences and has emphasized theological orthodoxy.
For those seeking a return to the conservatism of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, Erdő would represent a major shift away from Francis's approach.
Angelo Scola (Italy)
Tumblr media
At 8:1, Cardinal Angelo Scola, 82, is a long-standing papal contender. He was among the favorites in the 2013 conclave that ultimately elected Pope Francis. Scola, a former Archbishop of Milan, has deep theological roots and appeals to those who support a more centralized and hierarchical Church.
His traditionalist stance makes him a strong candidate for those looking to pivot away from Francis's reforms, but his age may work against him.

another thing that makes benitez a foil to tedesco is the whole latin vs vernacular language in mass.
Catholicism in the Philippines is a justification and tool for colonization. With its use of Latin, it was never truly ours. hardly anybody understood the mass.
Knowing Spanish might have helped people pick up some Latin vocabulary but the Philippines, though colonized by Spain, never had Spanish widely spoken in the country. Most people who do spoke it come from the upper class.
When the church shifted out of using Latin in mass, Filipinos finally found a way to make it ours. Masses are now held with either Tagalog, English, or the other Philippine languages depending on the location. It brought the church closer to the people.
Tedesco trying to impose Latin again is, frankly, a colonizer move.

I went to the National Musuem of Fine Arts last week and saw these two untitled portraits. My conclave brainrot immediately realised they looked familiar. The top one looks so much like Ralph, while the one at the bottom looks like Isabella. So, yeah, there's a portrait of young Dean Lawrence and Sister Agnes at the National Museum.

I have returned with another prompt:
Thomas resigns and joins a monastery, he's having the time of his life, frolicking in the fields, tending the gardens, making tea, reading, connecting with god again through prayer and scripture, not having to deal with anyone's bs
Then one day he hears that a new person is set to join the monastery, and now that he's not the freshest blood there he'd be happy to give the new person a tour, show him around the place
Humming, he goes to greet them in the front office. He does not expect that voice. The voice that is one of those that still haunts his nightmares when his brain refuses to let him release his past
TOMMASO
Tldr, after Vincent's election, Tedesco has a breakdown, wakes up thinking Venice has drowned and the church has been claimed by a different god, is forced to go to therapy and decides to quit and live a secluded life. In pursuit of this he figures out where Thomas has made his escape, packs a small(ish) bag and goes to join him in wonderful, companionable retirement 💜

bbc had "cardinals must be below the age of 80 to vote" as the sub-headline so I was imagining monsignor ray o'malley having to convince an 81yo cardinal he can't come in. "no, no, your eminence, I'm sorry...yes I know it's your right to vote for yourself but you can't vote at all...you can't be pope...I know, I know, how about some biscotti?"
