Saturday, 10/21/23
Well, the day didn’t start out very well. Dinner the night before included oysters for Marianne. They were cooked and yet she got violently ill from eating them. She had an over four hour, siege of illness. Both ends. There were times she was just laying on the floor in the bathroom. She was still a little green around the gills when the day started.
We packed up the car and we headed out of Slidell. Headed for Natchez. There was supposedly a balloon festival happening in Natchez. We got there right around noon. We found a parking spot relatively close to the event area and we made our way over to the entrance gate.
We paid the $35 entrance fee. There was a carnival, food vendors, a band and lots of people but no balloons. The balloons weren’t even taking off from this location. Some other place and flying over here. We found out it might be around 4pm.
It was a rather picturesque location on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. We toured the Rosalie Mansion, historic spot at the park.
We decided NOT to wait for the balloons and headed out. we drove the Natchez trace trail. 100 miles from Natchez to Jackson. We stopped at all the historical markers. The road is a regular car road with no shoulder. 50 mph is the speed limit. No trucks allowed. Bikes can use the whole road. I’m glad we were driving and not biking. We only saw one pair of bicyclists and they were on the wrong side of the road. Ugh.
We made it to Ridgeland. Wrong hotel. We went to Madison. Better location, better hotel. We were able to walk to a restaurant for dinner. Then chilling at the hotel.

Vidalia, Louisiana
October 22nd, 2017
Two hard days of driving the 2251 km to get here now feels worth it. Thankfully the Mercedes motor of JoHo works like a dream. Biggest problem was staying under the speed limit in order to achieve good gas mileage. However, I have now conquered cruise control and maneuvering through tight spots easily. Don is very proud of me! My next challenge is backing into a spot....
After battling the rain storm and traffic delays due to accidents; we arrived very late and crawled into bed. Vidalia, Louisiana is located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River and a bridge across to Natchez, the oldest city on the River. Sadly the hot air balloon festival/races were cancelled due to bad weather. We, however, found some good walking trails in Natchez, a great barbecue pit, the information to commence the Natchez Trace tomorrow and food supplies.

Enroute to Natchez
October 20th 2017
Our long awaited vehicle arrived and we set out at 6:20 am for our first motor adventure. I took the first leg before breakfast and was very surprised how easy things went though darkness and traffic. But the sun came up and it was clear sailing with beautiful blue skies all day.
Journey today was not very picturesque as we travelled on freeways to get to Natchez and really start holidays. JoHo out performed the old MoHo for me driving through rush hour of Dayton, Ohio and Don shortly after that through Cincinnati on Friday rush.
The sunny blue sky and 25 degree temp made our pit stops very enjoyable. I took the opportunity to check out doggie exercise spots for next trip.
1142 kms through Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky proved to be a long day. Time to settle for the night just south of Louisville. Plan tomorrow is to get another early start and head for Vidalia, Louisiana. Hopefully we will see the hot air balloon festival and enjoy our pool.
