In Another Life Chapter 4

Chapter 4 of my Narumitsu Big Bang 2024 fic, In Another Life, is out now!

Hoping to find out something that could lead to exonerating Edgeworth, Phoenix meets Maya Fey for the first time—in prison. But when Maya's purported guilt is questioned, Phoenix tasks himself with one more thing to do along the way to saving Edgeworth: learning more about his childhood friend's career as the Demon Prosecutor.

This is the biggest chapter yet, coming in at nearly 10k. It's also the last chapter I had a chance to finish before the end of the Narumitsu Big Bang creation period. I have nearly everything plotted and bits and pieces of future chapters written, but nothing else complete at the moment. I've also been busy with other fics and deadlines, so haven't had a chance to do much more than some plotting and brainstorming since then.

There's going to be a large gap of time between this chapter and whenever I post the next one. I would prefer to have most or nearly all the fic written before I continue posting, but once I do, the rest of the chapters should be posted regularly (1-2 weeks between updates).

I also have to do some plotting, especially as I'm considering adding an additional plotline to the fic (so I have to see how to work that in with my additional planned plot as well as some original plot details I haven't figured out yet).

But rest assured the fic will be finished—I love the story and want it to exist outside my mind and see the finished version as well. I just can't give a date for when, especially if I do end up writing it all in advance, as it'll probably be at least around 100k left to write.

I'll post updates (and maybe WIP excerpts) here on Tumblr as well as maybe on my writing account on Twitter. But also, if you want to be notified directly once I post the next chapter, you can subscribe to the fic or me on AO3.

Summary:

Phoenix Wright completed his college career without coming across the Demon Prosecutor article that started him down his path of becoming a lawyer. As a result, Phoenix is now an artist and the owner of a modest studio. It is now December 2016, and Phoenix sees his old friend on the front page of the paper for the first time. The headline: Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth Found Guilty of Murder. Phoenix confronts his old friend, now locked away in prison, and soon learns that in a little over a year, his punishment—the death sentence—will be carried out. Fully committed to saving Edgeworth, Phoenix focuses on finding a way to overturn his verdict before it’s too late. Between his efforts, he visits Edgeworth in prison every day, and over the course of their time spent together, over the course of the year, they grow closer. But when unexpected issues arise, Phoenix may need to go to further lengths than he’d planned to change Edgeworth’s fate.

In Another Life

Back in January, I signed up for the Narumitsu Big Bang 2024, hosted by @narumitsuserver. Now it's finally posting time!

My contribution is a canon divergent tragic romance fic, which my event partners, @oppleganger and @/suiirenjin (Twitter), created art for.

What would happen if Phoenix never saw Miles in the paper? If he never became a lawyer? If he only heard Miles' name again, after he'd already been convicted for Hammond's murder? How would their relationship develop from there? And how would Phoenix save him?

It's turning out to be quite a long fic, but I managed to get the first 20k written (spread between four chapters) in time for the big bang posting period.
