Sega Mega Drive - Joe Montana Football
Title: Joe Montana Football / ジョー・モンタナ フットボール
Developer: Park Place Productions / Electronic Arts
Publisher: Sega of America
Release date: 1 March 1991
Catalogue No.: G-4045
Genre: American Football
Sega's answer to Electronic Arts' John Madden series. Unfortunately for Sega, their first Joe Montana outing isn't that good (for reasons I'll talk about in the next few paragraphs). Sure, it has all the play options, decent graphics, and sound but there's just something about the controls that let this game down. The second Joe Montana game is far better and has that fantastic "Sports talk" as well.
As the story goes, Sega signed with Joe Montana in mid-1990 in a five-year deal worth millions of dollars. Joe Montana was likely the biggest name in American football at the time. Playing with the San Francisco 49ers, he led the team to victory at the Super Bowl XXIV in January 1990 and had picked up both the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award(as he had in 1982 and 1985) and Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award for the 1989 season. Reportedly Montana was also a fan of the Mega Drive (Genesis in North America), with his favorite game being Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (Naomichi Ozaki Super Masters).
At the time, Sega did not have the facilities in the US to develop a Mega Drive game from scratch, so had to seek outside developers, with three separate development studios working on the project. Among these was Mediagenic, basically just Activision, who attempted to turn Hard Yardage into this game, but quality concerns saw the project reworked from scratch. Michael Katz first approached BlueSky Software, who wanted to assist but felt the game's tight schedule would be too great of a detriment and thus declined. Sega in desperation mode then approached Electronic Arts with the view of licensing the upcoming John Madden Football, but the deal fell through, however, the engine was used (with major modifications) for the final game.
This confused development schedule meant that Joe Montana Football changed from having a "horizontal" perspective to a "vertical" one. Sega had wanted to use the horizontal view, though was unable to until the following year, when they found a developer that could produce a satisfactory game in Joe Montana II Sports Talk Football. Early promotional material for Joe Montana Football includes screenshots from one of the "horizontal" builds.

NJPW New Years Golden Series Night 6 - 2/7/2022: Ozaki Signs Off, KOPW Stipulations, Cobb, Nakashima Injured; Muto & Marufuji Vacate GHC Tag Belts Due To Muto Hip Injury, Step Forward 2022 Night 1 & 2 Cards
New Japan Pro Wrestling
The New Years Golden Series rumbles on, although there will be some changes going forward, as detailed below. Yesterday’s show was streamed live on NJPWWorld.
- 2/7/2022, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Great O-Khan [United Empire] d. Yuto Nakashima (Elbow, 5:54)
Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Ryohei Oiwa & Kosei Fujita (Hiromu > Fujita, Boston Crab, 7:12)
Yujiro Takahashi & Gedo [Bullet Club] d. Tiger Mask IV & Tomoaki Honma (Yujiro > Honma, Big Juice, 10:08)
Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & DOUKI [SZKG] d. Toru Yano [CHAOS], Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima & Yuji Nagata (Taichi > Kojima, Black Mephisto, 10:24)
EVIL & SHO [Bullet Club] d. Tomohiro Ishii & YOH [CHAOS] (SHO > YOH, DQ, 12:00)
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA & Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] d. Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS], Hiroshi Tanahashi & Togi Makabe (Takagi > Makabe, Last Of The Dragon, 15:40)
Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi d. El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] (Taguchi > Kanemaru, No.9, 23:16)
Master Wato gets a big win on his way to challenging Despy for the IWGP Juniorheavyweight title. He did not get a whole lot of time to celebrate, however, as post-main, the final farewell and send-off for ring announcer Kimihiko Ozaki happened. He was initially supposed to take his final bow at the 1/29/2022 Korakuen Hall show, however since that one got cancelled due to COVID concerns, it took place on this show instead. Best wishes for him.
Toru Yano brought a dog cage to ringside, and would end up locking TAKA Michinoku in it. Suzuki v. Yano’s KOPW2022 match is now being voted on, between a Handcuff Deathmatch (Suzuki) or a Dog Cage Match (Yano).
YOSHI-HASHI and Taiji Ishimori are still out of the lineups for fever concerns. Yuto Nakashima took a blow to the head during his match against Great O-Khan, so he is being concussion protocoled and will be out through 2/13/2022. This will be the second absence for Nakashima since he started due to injury; he must be starting to hate the month of February. Jeff Cobb is also out of the lineups, having had a torn left patella tendon since his match at Night 2 of WK16 against Tetsuya Naito. Needless to say there are lineup changes.
The tour continues tomorrow, which will not be streamed.
2/9/2022, Saitama Saiden Chemical Arena

Pro Wrestling NOAH
NOAH no longer have active GHC Heavyweight Tag Team champions. This after a press conference today, where Keiji Muto and Naomichi Marufuji vacated the titles, owing to a hip injury suffered by Muto. Muto claims he’s had this particular injury since NOAH’s The New Year show at Budokan, with discomfort in his hips since October, and also said he had to take a painkilling injection for his match in the main event at Night 3 of Wrestle Kingdom 16, the NJPW v. NOAH show, where he said he got through it, but couldn’t move after the painkillers wore off. No immediate plans for the fate of the tag titles for now that I’m aware of.
Tomorrow is the first night of Step Forward 2022, which will only be shown on ABEMA, live with full HD cameras. The following two nights at Korakuen Hall will be on Wrestle Universe, filmed the same way. There is a title match tomorrow, as well as a special singles match main event. Thursday has a title match main event, and Go Shiozaki continuing a singles series that also goes to Friday’s event.

Sega Mega Drive - Naomichi Ozaki no Super Masters
Title: Naomichi Ozaki no Super Masters / 尾崎直道のスーパーマスターズ
Developer/Publisher: Sega
Release date: 9 September 1989
Catalogue No.: G-4014
Genre: Golf
You may know this game under its western disguise of Arnold Palmer’s Tournament Golf in which you take control of the aging cubby American golfer. This Japanese version was released beforehand yet is pretty much the same game apart from a different attract screen and fewer music options. It’s also missing Opa Opa from Fantasy Zone who strangely appears in the Western version even though it’s more likely that Japanese players would recognize it more than Western players.
Gameplay isn’t that exciting, to be honest. The game is very old so of course it’s not going to play anything like today’s offerings. All your basic elements are present such as stance, wind direction, terrain, and so on and let’s not forget your set of clubs as well. Unfortunately, you are stuck with the ones that your caddy decided to bring her with no option to change them. You are also stuck with the same caddy as well! Then again it is a nice young lady and with Naomichi (and Arnold in the Western version looking more like old dried-up prunes) I’m sure they wouldn’t think to change her anyway.
Graphics are ok for the time, I guess. Shots are presented from behind the golfer while the actual ball flight is the typical overhead affair. Like I said, not bad for the time but there was better around.
Earlier on I mentioned that the Western version of this game features Opa Opa from Fantasy Zone while the Japanese version does not. Now you may not think this is such a big deal but if you take over 100 shots on the Western version you get a bonus mini-level of the Sega shooter Fantasy Zone!! Now the Japanese version also has a bonus if you take over 100 shots on the same course. It’s not as good as a mini level of Fantasy Zone mind you. Just take a look at the screenshot scans to see what you get.
So, take 100 shots on the same hole in the Western version of this game and you'll get a mini game of Fantasy Zone. Do the same thing in this Japanese version to receive a piss poor picture.
