Hey! I'm the person who sent in the ask about Quinn doing a deafwest production over the summer and its not an original idea but I really would love to see him play Moritz in spring awakening for 3 reasons, 1) Its my favorite show 2) For some reason I feel like he would absolutely KILL that role and 3) I am an evil person who likes the thought that Nando would cry his eyes out if he ever came to see it

Okay, bet. We’re going. ✈️✈️✈️ It’s time. And I’m happy to do your favorite show for this because you’re the blessed person who landed this entire concept in my inbox in the first place.

This is official canon now, and here’s how it goes down:

- It’s the summer between Quinn’s sophomore and junior year. He gets the chance to audition because of some friend of a friend in the Kiersey performing arts department faculty.

- Yes, he absolutely plays Moritz, and I completely agree with you that he’d kick that role’s ass. The emotion!!!!!!!!!! The hormonal confusion!!!!!!!!! The angst!!!!!!!!!!! If ever there were a perfect role for him in this show, Moritz is it, baby. He does it so well.

- I’m almost thinking that because Quinn is completely fluent in ASL, he does double duty and is his own shadow? In other words, like, he sings and signs at the same time? (I keep thinking of him absentmindedly signing his songs while practicing for DEH his freshman year and it gets me feeling real soft.)

- And also, Quinn getting to meet other deaf actors.... brb I’m actually crying............ he makes so many good friends in that cast!!!!!! I’m just thinking about him getting to meaningfully communicate with like-minded deaf people and it’s just!!!!!! So lovely you guys!!! Because as we have discussed, he doesn’t really know that many other people who are hard of hearing! (Shoutout to his one old-lady friend from home, Grace, though; she rocks.)

- It’s a touring production because I said so. They have him on for the stint of the entire summer and then he passes the role to someone else. So yes, it’s professional, and yes, I want that in his life, and yes, that means he ends up just traveling around all summer with the company doing shows.

- Re: your third point........ I like the way you think, my friend. Quinn is absolutely a diabolical little shit in that he would not say anything about his character’s fate in the production prior to Nando coming to see it. And I very much want Nando to be able to see it, so let’s say the tour definitely does one of two things: it hits Phoenix, or it’s in the New England area around the time Nando would be coming back for preseason.

- Rest assured Nando would go out of his way to see this no matter where he had to go, but anyway.

- Yes. Nando goes to a show. And Quinn says absolutely nothing about his role. Nando doesn’t like to spoil plot to himself before he sees a show Quinn is in or anything like that, so he goes in completely emotionally unprepared every single time (see: him definitely crying like a child during DEH, possibly multiple times. Which, honestly, I don’t blame him. I’m confident that if I ever got the chance to see that show, I would cry through the entire thing. For some Quinn reasons and some general this show is emotional as fuck reasons).

- So anyway, you can imagine the emotional rollercoaster that Nando goes through in the audience.

- But also, he’s so proud of his boyfriend??!?!?!? Quinn is doing professional theatre!!!!!! That is the coolest thing ever!!!!!!!

- I’m not crying thinking about Nando meeting him at the stage door with flowers and a huge feet-off-the-ground hug, nope, not at all, not even a little bit....

- Also, Spring Awakening is a fantastic show. The soundtrack? Out of this world. I’m sure Quinn is a huge fan of the production.

Fighting Furies-  Reiko and Natsume dealing with youkai all alone

Landscape- A song for Reiko, a lonely misfit girl with a weird power, who left a strange inheritance for her descendant:

Let the Rain- “I want to go with them!” While struggling so much,  Natsume learns he can make a fresh start in a new home with the Fujiwara’s.

 Also fits his general desires to become more honest and happy throughout the show.

Warmth- Natsume vs the temptation to give up and give in to the youkai that wants to eat everyone and make him vanish and his eventual triumph. “Fujiwara-san really came...! I’m going to go! I’m not going to disappear! I’m going to thank the people I’m with right now!”

It wants me to discard the humanity I know/Watch the warmth blow away

Welcome Home- This fits the whole series if you think about it from the point of view of Natsume settling in his new home with the Fujiwaras, but it fits ESPECIALLY well for the episode the long way home, where Natsume returns to his childhood home and deals with all his complicated emotions about it.

For instance, this could be about the monster invading Natsume’s mind and exploiting his painful childhood memories about the loss of his home and his father:

All my nightmares escaped my head/Bar the door, please don't let them in/You were never supposed to leave/Now my head's splitting at the seams

But while those painful memories are part of who he is, he won’t let them consume him. He has a new home with the Fujiwaras:

Peel the scars from off my back/I don't need them anymore/You can throw them out or keep them in your mason jars/I've come home

Grandmother: Natsume learning more about himself and the importance of being emotionally open and giving by witnessing and hearing about Reiko’s experiences and relationships. “Maybe Reiko could have made a connection...but she kept her distance from so many things. ...The youkai Reiko had saved on a whim was beautiful. And I was a little sad Reiko didn’t get to see this wonderful sight. But a little proud too...”

Grandmother taught him to cry/exorcise all that hurt through his eyes/see the worst and be cleansed/and keep that child's heart inside an honest man

Always with me- Natsume embracing and carrying everyone with him-the memories of his grandmother, his other family, even those who caused him hardship- as he journeys forward in his new life with new friends and family

The whispering voice, we never want to forget/in each passing memory always there to guide you/When a mirror has been broken, shattered pieces scattered on the ground/Glimpses of new life, reflected all around

You Are Enough- fairly self explanatory. Natsume learning he is enough and guiding youkai and other people in learning the same thing

“You are enough”/These little words, somehow they’re changing us.

Koko- finding home and home in other people.

People Help the People- “You must be the world’s biggest softie’. Natsume helping everyone.

Let it Out- “If you have a chance to speak from the heart, do not fear it”.

Here’s an English cover and translation

Tsuki ni- The whole vibe of this song was really reminiscent of Natsume which was why I wanted to add it- the soft piano mixed with tradtional Japanese sound, the gorgeous singing etc. But even though I searched for a long time, I couldn’t find an English translation anywhere.

 But I did run every line through an auto-translator just to make sure the content  song wasn’t too thematically different from Natsume...and it looks like it isn’t, as it’s a song about nature and new things and dreams and all that. 

For your perusal, here is the auto-translation of the whole song. Take it all with a grain of salt, obviously. 

Wind that delights and delivers/I will show my dream again with my hands/Overlapping colors and playing sounds

Level Up- “I’m not afraid of sharing my heart”. Natsume finding his strength and helping others find theirs as they navigate hardship.

"If you are afraid, come forth/If you are alone, come forth now/Everybody here has loved and lost/So level up and love again/.../Yes, you are only one/No, it is not enough—/But if you lift your eyes/I am your brother"

Lions!-  That gentle, reckless Natsume, always charging straight for danger. 

Be steady on your feet/No matter the trouble you meet/Lions make you brave/Giants give you faith/Death is a charade/You don't have to feel safe to feel unafraid

The Name of Life- about giving the youkai their names back and freeing them, while viewing their memories of Reiko.
