⇢ JULY PLAYLIST ⇠
Over halfway through the year and I’ll be real-- The Besnard Lakes are the Last of the Great Thunderstorm Warnings is still my favourite album I’ve heard this year (also I’m gutted they didn’t make the Polaris shortlist... along with Yu Su and CFCF 😢 I am super stoked that Zoon made the cut though!). However Midwife and Anika really put out bangers of albums this month imo, alongside some other gems...
Anika - Change
When asked to describe the circumstances that influenced her beautifully fraught new work, Anika quickly articulates a set of feelings and unpredictable circumstances that are familiar to anyone who tried to make art—or simply tried to live through—the recent global pandemic. “It’s a moment caught in time,” she says of Change, her much-anticipated new record. Given that it has been 11 years since the release of her last solo album, the artist suddenly found herself with a lot to say... Despite the subject matter and the circumstances around its creation, Change itself is ultimately a treatise on optimism. The title track presents the album’s message writ large: I think we can change, we all have things to learn, about ourselves and about each other. To end the record on such a sanguine note might be one of Change’s most revolutionary gestures.
Half Waif - Mythopoetics
For Nandi Rose, writing a song is an act of transformation. As Half Waif, Rose pieces together the patchworks of our darkest and most vulnerable moments with a golden thread, crafting a majestic evocation of the human experience that permeates with a graceful strength. On new album Mythopoetics, the Hudson Valley-based artist breaks the familial patterns handed down to her, transforming this source of pain into something bearable, beautiful and celebratory. It is an essential reminder that we have the power to shape the stories we tell and the myths we make of our lives.
King Woman - Celestial Blues
King Woman, the outfit featuring songwriter, vocalist and “tour de force of gloom and woe” (Rolling Stone) Kris Esfandiari, return with their eagerly-awaited sophomore album, Celestial Blues. Feeling compelled to reshape the biblical archetypes that once bound her, Esfandiari has created a theatrical tale of rebellion, tragedy, and triumph — a metaphor for her own personal experiences over the years — Celestial Blues was born... Celestial Blues is at once a masterclass on crushing atmospheric doom, and at times a sobering take on the weightier sides of shoegaze. At the album's core, a palpable tension can be felt. Acoustic guitars soar before descending into a darkness of riff-heavy distortion. Drums build upon these moments and explode into a cacophonous groove. Esfandiari's voice remains at the forefront; somber moments lead to burning intensity and crescendo. This ebb and flow is constant.
Lucid Express - Lucid Express
Lucid Express is the name of five young dreamers creating a stunning airy blend of shoegaze and indie pop amongst the skyscrapers, mountains, and packed alleyways of Hong Kong. The name itself a modest mission statement of the band’s intent. Lucid in the poetic sense of something bright and radiant. The Lucid Express operating as the service to take the listener on a journey through the band’s color-soaked sounds.
Midwife - Luminol
Luminol is a chemical used by forensic investigators to reveal trace amounts of blood left at a crime scene. When it reacts with blood, luminol emits a chemiluminescent blue glow that can be seen in a darkened room. In the same way this chemical reveals evidence at a scene, Midwife is interested in profound truth - turning trial and tribulation into sources of light. Luminol navigates themes of incarceration, locus of control, clarity, self harm, confinement, agency, and truth-seeking, all erupting in a bioluminescent Rothko color-field of blue.
Pizzagirl - Softcore Mourn
Continuing his propensity for off-kilter, emotive world-building, Pizzagirl’s sophomore collection delves deeper into the emotional hard-drive. Perpetually ensconced in the fault-lines between effervescent humanity and binary technology, pitting maximalist-pop sounds against claustrophobic production, Pizzagirl delivers his ‘millennium’ record, a post-Y2K release of aching pressure and digital malaise – all the while retaining the unique glint he has cultivated since the start. The tracks flit back and forth, blurring the lines between, bristling electronic jams and country-tinged alt-pop tunes. While the collection borrows from some of the sonic palette associated with past releases, gone is the postmodern absurdism and vapor-wave escapism, the approach is now more grounded. The result is an album that represents his most emotionally honest work.
Yves Tumor - The Asymptotical World (EP)
Under the layers of sleight of hand and theatricality, it’s easy to forget that Sean Bowie aka Yves Tumor is one of modern music’s greatest capital-R Rock stars. It started to show with 2020’s Heaven to a Tortured Mind, a disc loaded with properly anthemic tunes belied by a fearlessly experimental timbre, making the infectious and the exploratory one and the same for Yves (not unlike a certain other chameleonic Bowie). The Asymptotical World EP sees Yves Tumor launching themselves back into their glorious sound world brandishing even more hooks and an even more fiery type of fury... Once again, Yves Tumor shows that grizzly distortion and excellent pop songwriting can — and should — co-exist.
#2021.n#2021.7#think this is the earliest i've gotten this done. LOL#also no pre-july records this month bc i made an effort to keep on top of july stuff#txt

Half Waif shares new single ‘Sodium & Cigarettes’
Half Waif, the project of Hudson Valley, NY-based artist Nandi Rose, shares ‘Sodium & Cigarettes,’ the hopeful and haunting new single from her anticipated upcoming album Mythopoetics, out July 9 on ANTI-.
"'Sodium & Cigarettes' follows the theme of many of the tracks on Mythopoetics and deals with the recognition that no one is going to magically save us or pull us out of our misery. The chorus 'okay, give it another day' is something I say to myself when I've had a really awful day and everything feels like a wash. It's a deep breath and a stab at courage - I can face tomorrow, and who knows what possibilities for joy and growth that will bring," says Rose. "While working on the album during the Democratic Primary in early 2020, the song took on new meaning for me in light of political conversations. "I believe in something more than what's in front of me" became a commentary on people saying, 'well, this system is what we've got and you can't ask for more.' I firmly believe that we have to fight for the world we imagine, that everything is possible. So this song is really a quiet encouragement for me, a way to tell myself to stop running, to face what's coming with clarity and vision and courage, to know there's another tomorrow."

Escucha Five Years de Duran Duran Aqui.
La canción es parte del muy esperado evento tributo de streaming mundial que tuvo lugar en conmemoración del que hubiera sido el cumpleaños 74 de Bowie y el quinto aniversario de su fallecimiento.

HALF WAIF shares "In August" from new album
Half Waif (aka Nandi Rose) has shared "In August," the latest track from her new album, 'The Caretaker', out next Friday, March 27th via ANTI- Records. Of the song, Rose says: "'In August' tracks the dissolution of a friendship over the course of a year, throughout every season. There's a particular kind of sadness to a friendship ending when there's no one to blame, just as there's something mournful about the inevitable change of weather. Sometimes it's not a big fight but a gradual growing apart that marks the end - how do we make sense of our role in that? This song is an attempt to recognize and accept mutual culpability in an effort to move on." https://youtu.be/tAtBYYB1U6o Half Waif will be live broadcasting an intimate set from her home on March 27th at 11pm UK GMT / 12 Midnight CET. Details to come. Over the course of eleven songs, on ‘The Caretaker’ Nandi Rose creates the lush world of a humid summer night, dreaming of and reaching for a season in which she is her "best self." Referring to the album's title, she says, "I kind of created a character. She's someone who has been entrusted with taking care of this estate, taking care of the land, and she's not doing a very good job. The weeds are growing everywhere, and she's not taking care of herself. "For Rose, the character of ‘The Caretaker’ serves as a warning of who she could become if she's not more vigilant, and the resulting album sees her grappling with her desire for independence and the knotty reality that we need each other. ‘The Caretaker’ follows critically acclaimed album ‘Lavender’, named for the lavender that once grew in her grandmother's garden. And on her most recent collection, Rose's family history and intergenerational stories continue to seep their way into the songs. "There's a family legacy of losing and seeking homes, a theme that has followed me," she reflects, pointing to her mother's journey as an Indian refugee from Uganda, and her grandmother's displacement from Lahore after the partition of India. Rose herself was raised surrounded by the Berkshire mountains in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and today she finds inspiration in the shock of seasons of the Hudson Valley where she currently resides. ‘The Caretaker’ will be released on March 27th via ANTI-. Half Waif shares new single Orange Blossoms’
Half Waif, the project of Hudson Valley-based artist Nandi Rose, has announced a new 7" single with the release of its A-Side ‘Orange Blossoms.’ The two-track 7” will be released on February 24th via ANTI-.
"I wrote 'Orange Blossoms' soon after finishing The Caretaker, and in some ways, it feels like the next chapter in that story," said Nandi Rose of the song. "In the fall of 2019, I found myself taking care of someone close to me who was struggling with addiction, and as a caretaker often does, I internalized that immense pain and took it on as my own. It's paralyzing, to feel so powerless when trying to help someone you love. The song came out like an incantation, a desperate plea to be rescued from wrestling with everything. But it unfolded into something more resolute as I refocused on the task of taking responsibility for myself and my own life. The song touches on a phrase that kept coming back to me at that time, which was: 'no one's going to do it for you.' You can help and be helped, you can love and be loved, but salvation is your own to seek and claim."
