over the water & down below (3) | bucky x avenger!reader

warnings: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, explicit language, alcohol consumption, sarcastic!bucky

series’ SPOTIFY playlist
The temperature was scorching hot by the time they stepped foot on the yacht at barely past twelve in the afternoon. The bouncer at the dock had asked for IDs, meticulously searching through the guest list, and y/n had nearly patted herself on the shoulder for stuffing Amelie Barnes’s ID into the back pocket of her denim shorts before they had left.
The boat had two levels, the upper she assumed to be a luxurious master cabin and the lower floor for leisure, with a large wooden deck, a shaded area for relaxation and cooking, and a ritzy bar.
The two drowned in tense silence as they observed the other guests on Elijah’s rented yacht. People crowded most areas on the lower level, especially the hammock floor near the boat’s bow. Elijah and Nancy know how to throw a party, y/n noted, messing with the loose strings on the hem of her shorts, it's a shame James would drown me if I let loose.
James had peculiarly chosen the couch last night, and the conversation about sleeping arrangements had gone down without too much of a fight if one ignored the scrimmage over pillows. The woman had won, taking both the better pillows and the comforter out of pettiness, regretting it when James got ahold of the suite’s AC remote and turned it into a living hell. The first night in the Lovers’ Suite had been as sweltering as it had been sleepless, and as she stood there on the boat, the last drop of hope for the day to outplay the night slowly vanished.
“James! Amelie!” Elijah’s voice boomed out across the yacht. The politician resided on the deck, sprawled on a lounge chair. “The guests of the hour!” He gestured between the three men beside him, the drink in his hand almost spilling over. “I cannot believe the Winter Soldier is here.” Elijah smiled at them as Nancy settled into his lap. “Come over here.”
The Winter Soldier is here, she cocked her head to the side, what a bizarre choice of words. It’d be reasonable for him to be interested in James, but Elijah Williamson was abnormally engrossed by the Winter Soldier for a Secretary of Defense. She found herself reflecting on last night’s dinner. Elijah had appeared attentive to most of Bucky’s domestic stories, especially the pesto eggs recipe, she thought, but he had also questioned James about weapons, former missions, and Steve? Why would Elijah inquire about Steve?
“Amelie,” Nancy raked her eyes over y/n’s covered form when they had reached the group, “I sure hope there is a bikini underneath the clothing.” She herself had only a bathing suit on, her skin silky smooth underneath the scorching sunlight.
“There is.” She flashed a sheepish grin without making an effort to remove neither the shorts nor the tank top, her body frozen in place.
She had never been an insecure woman or someone who’d shy away from tight dresses and mini skirts, but she’d rather choose the option of keeping the tiny red bikini covered than having James see it. Enduring a ‘things were much different back in my day’ monologue had not been on y/n’s to-do list.
“Good!” Nancy nodded in delight. “Strip down, the two of you. This is a party, not a business meeting.”
In some ways, it was.
James awkwardly shifted from one foot to another, “it’s for the best the shirt stays on,” a weak chuckle slipped past his lips. “It can be quite jarring.”
The Winter Soldier had always been a faded scar, and Bucky had always been Steve’s best pal from the forties, but James Buchanan Barnes was a blank spot she had never attached meaning to. James was an entirely empty canvas. If she’d recall memories of the field, she’d see a strict sergeant, if she’d recall memories of life back at the compound, she’d see an annoying prick who’d push her in training until she’d break and snitch to Tony whenever she’d use his luxury cars. If she recalled memories of James, as he was, and without barriers between them, she’d see nothing, except a faint shadow of a man who had always been too close yet too far for a meaningful relationship. She had nothing of substance until this moment — James was an insecure man, perfectly hiding behind a wall of forced toughness.
She placed a tender hand on his arm, pity clawing at her bones, “I think scars tell the stories of who we are,” the ghost of a touch lingered on his skin for a moment too long, “the good, the bad, and the space in between”, a gentle smile etched itself onto her lips, “my handsome, handsome husband."
He was not her husband, but the painting of scars on his shoulder had never taken away from his beauty; that she could grudgingly admit.
It was all for show, James understood, yet he foolishly allowed himself to get lost in her softened expression and gracious words. I think scars tell the stories of who we are, he recalled y/n’s words, and though his story had been nothing, but rotten for seventy years, the latter part of his protracted life, had been spent on courageous actions, he’d like to believe. Good, bad, and somewhere in between.
It was abrupt, yet it happened. James neatly folded the t-shirt before hanging it over the lounge chair’s backrest and took a seat, leaning back with his palms firmly pressed against it. She had only ever seen him shirtless once, and the accident had been wiped clean from her memories, whether subconsciously or otherwise, but witnessing James in just a pair of swim trunks painted him in a different light. She had to find a way to extinguish this light, this newfound fire, inside her and do it quick. Did James always have bulging muscles, or a defined Adonis belt, or—
No, she stopped herself, horror burning beneath her skin, James is not attractive.
“Amelie?” A simple word carried heavy meaning. Too much of it.
The woman had been busted for checking James out, and if she trusted the universe after the ‘James replaced Steve on a vacation in Hawaii’ stunt, she’d ask for the earth, or the ocean below them, to swallow her whole. Except she didn’t, and the only way out was to flash the group a sheepish grin.
“Sometimes it takes a while,” James narrowed his eyes in amusement, “let me help you,” his hands were unbuttoning y/n’s denim shorts before she could protest.
She was grateful he abstained from speaking of her longing gazes on his exposed body in the moment, but y/n was almost certain he’d tease her all about it as soon as they stepped foot off the yacht. If there was to come a day where James would need y/n to do something she would absolutely protest against, a time bound to inevitably arrive, he had gotten enough blackmail to pressure her into acting upon unspeakable actions. The woman's newfound family, the Avengers, would certainly believe she had lusted over James more than James partaking in praise kink activities. His icy demeanor would make it impossible for others to consider him ever calling y/n a good girl. Shit, she thought, shit, the curse word bounced around in her mind for a second time, universe, if you’d like to apologize, this would be the perfect opportunity to split the ocean underneath my feet.
Heat drenched her cheeks as he nonchalantly slid the material down her legs and then later helped y/n step out of it. She reached for her shirt, hastily removing it because she couldn’t possibly handle the contrast of cool metal and sizzling touch on her exposed skin any longer.
“Sit on my lap,” James insisted. It’s all for show, the glimmer in his eyes read, and she could feel all pity for the man vanishing.
“Would it get me a good girl?” The words slipped out before she could catch them. Elijah chuckled, the sparkle of merriment in his eyes urging y/n for an explanation. “James has a thing for good girls in the bedroom.”
“Young and in love, right?” The carefree strokes of his stare melted when he had scanned over the group’s faces and returned to glare at her. “Besides, you enjoy it.”
And she did, not with Bucky, for that would be disgusting, but certain men had previously called her a good girl in the bedroom, and she had shamelessly basked in the affection.
Nonetheless, y/n bit her tongue and allowed James to bring her into his lap. A weak cough escaped past his parted lips once their bodies made contact. Alike y/n, fuck, he mentally cussed, but it was for an utterly different reason than blackmail. The soldier's body had betrayed him.
“I’m Mickey,” one of the men began speaking, and, “Hansen,” promptly disappointed y/n with his last name.
Mickey Mouse would be a better fit, she thought as the waiter brought a round of drinks.
The woman’s attentiveness in the group’s conversation had gotten lost after the second Moscow mule and, to her revulsion, the bearded man sitting left to Elijah had only been half the reason.
The other half kept her back pressed against his muscled chest — she could feel him, all of him, clenching around nothing when he’d adjust positions. Never had she been this close to James, skin against skin, the weight of her thighs resting against his own; even the worst of nightmares she had experienced didn’t compare. And yet she found herself frozen in his lap, subconsciously, or perchance consciously, wanting to stay in the most unlikely of places, with his arm draped across her waist.
James had not made a move to rid of y/n either, his fingers dancing against the skin of her pleasantly warm, sun-kissed thighs.
“You are not as subtle as you may believe.” His voice was gruff as he whispered into the crook of her neck.
The soldier was correct, she had not been entirely subtle about the traitorous fire within the pit of her stomach, but neither had the bearded man about his line of work. It was a party, to most of the people on the yacht, and he had gotten comfortable, slipping in his wording on several occasions.
It was Steve who had taught y/n the importance of trusting one’s instincts. In the field, a split-second decision could either save—or destroy—it all, and if her suspicions were to be true, she would’ve been speaking to a former HYDRA operative for the last hour without blinking an eye.
“Mark,” Elijah turned to the bearded man, and she made a mental note of his name, “is excellent at snorkeling.”
One of the other men laughed, the sound of it droll and booming, “everyone is great at snorkeling.”
“I’d disagree,” she chimed in, “fish tend to be vigilant around James,” y/n teased, voice laced with faux amusement, “as soon as he steps a foot into the ocean, it becomes vacant.”
A dry chuckle slipped past his lips, “only because I do not feed them,” he leaned down to place his empty cup on the table, inadvertently thrusting up and into her. It was a good thing they couldn’t see each other’s faces. “This one always brings a bag of bread.”
The answer was a hint, that he did not, get her hint. C’moooon, fish tend to be vigilant around James, James. Perhaps she could’ve been less indirect.
“No!” She shook her head, the reaction earning a genuine laugh from Nancy. “Fish are smart, and can sense that your favorite dish is salmon.”
Is he stupid or am I? She had never thought she would ever have the thought manifest itself in her mind, but James and I desperately need to talk and redefine our game plan.
Her theory could be quite preposterous and quite false, but the case had been closed, Elijah Williamson had been proclaimed as an innocent man, so if it led the two agents to nowhere, the worst-case scenario would be disappointment. The best scenario? The ridiculous theory could lead to a path of Elijah Williamson and Mark Basso working together. Perhaps James had been wrong, and the court had been right — HYDRA was destroyed, except for a few independent members, who had not been prosecuted.
She has always had a difficult time with names, in fact, it had taken Elijah’s snorkeling comment to recall Mark’s, but she would never forget a face. She had his thick graying beard, deep-set eyes, and pointy nose burned and then later buried in her memories from when she had accompanied Steve to a mission, staying behind to monitor security cameras. It had been at a foreign gala, with Mark Basso managing to stay out of Steve’s sight, but not y/n’s. They had not been in Germany for Mark, at the time, but she had observed him, both out of boredom and curiosity, for hours, before the captain needed help and she had switched into a vigilant agent once more.
“I do not like salmon,” James scoffed, and she elbowed him in the ribs before he had the chance to say anything else.
“Yes, you do.”
The sharp edge of her tone had him confused, but he refrained from questioning. “Only when she makes it,” he declared instead, “pesto makes it mouthwateringly good.”
James would end up drowned in the ocean if he mentioned pesto again, she decided. Perhaps suffocated by the superior pillows she had taken without an ounce of guilt, or perhaps he’d go mysteriously missing in Hawaii, and she’d return to New York dishonestly shaken from the disaster of it all.
It wasn’t y/n’s lucky day as Nancy stood up, gazing at her. “How’d you feel about another drink and some lady talk?”
She’d feel great, but it’d be nowhere close to the pleasure of a missing Bucky Barnes and an absence of training sessions. She abandoned his lap nonetheless, trailing after the woman. “If it’d be margaritas, count me in.”
They met at the stairs leading to the master cabin. She sincerely hoped James had done any form of investigation because she had wasted the last half hour gossiping with Nancy.
Though she was not a vast gossiper, she had enjoyed chatting with the woman, especially when the conversation had steered away from aimless rumors and towards her role as a human rights lawyer. Nancy was an incredibly intelligent person, with arguably great wit and judgment. If her theory was to prove true, she’d desire nothing more than for Nancy to have excluded herself from Elijah’s treacherous actions. Perchance some desires were not meant to be granted.
“I fucked up,” was not a sentence she wanted to hear from James.
“As long as it’s not another anniversary dinner,” the woman sighed, glancing around the yacht, and was glad nobody batted an eye in their direction.
“It could potentially be worse,” he scanned over Elijah’s guests, as well, before his eyes found hers, “alright, it’s significantly worse.”
She had never witnessed James as flustered as he stood in front of her that very moment, if flustered was even the word to describe him. Hues of pink had glazed over his cheeks, and though the sun was scorching, she had an idea it had nothing to do with his frazzled expression and reddened skin. Significantly worse could indicate plenty of things — dance lessons, for she wanted to keep her toes unbruised, or a photoshoot, for she needed zero evidence of forced romance and a false honeymoon.
The woman raised an eyebrow as if demanding the answer of what could be significantly worse than spending a, quite unromantic, if she said so herself, and she would, dinner together.
If Elijah had not shown up, perhaps they would have gone down a path of brief conversations and tense silences as they each devoured massive bowls of shrimp pasta. That would’ve been fine, but the politician had to celebrate his anniversary at The Maui Resort, pressuring the pair to stage a plausible performance of husband and wife, which consisted of fabricated loving glances and unsettling touches. Elijah had to conclude the two as a legitimate, endlessly in love married couple, and Elijah just had to invite them to a yacht party, where James had burned with lust for the woman he despised, almost hoping she had returned his concerns.
“I’ve agreed to join Elijah and Nancy for a couples massage.”
Oh.
“That is not worse than the dinner,” she grinned, “though I’d doubt they have a room suitable for a throuple.”
James was less than amused. “A couples massage, as in they get a room, we get a different room, and meet at the lobby for tea after the fiasco.”
Shit.
Perhaps James had not read the joyous pamphlet of Passionate Honeymoon Activities at The Maui Resort, but she had. She had read through it all, and to say that the couples massage, which was not, heartbreakingly, separate massages, sounded like an absolute hell, would be an understatement.
“James Buchanan Barnes,” the words dripped with poison, “what the fuck possessed you to agree to a couples fucking massage?!” If she had been any louder, heads would’ve turned toward the two.
“We need to get Elijah alone,” was all James could offer, “he doesn’t speak much of HYDRA with people around.”
HYDRA doesn’t exist, she thought, abstaining from voicing her inner voice. Forget James, she had to get in touch with Steve and quickly. If Mark Basso was, as she had previously assumed, a former HYDRA operative, the two were in far deeper trouble than both had estimated. Unless, of course, he just happened to frequent galas in Germany where heaps of criminals would gather for less-than-honorable endeavors.
“James,” there fell his name again, “are you aware of the hotel’s version of a couples massage?” She questioned, narrowing her eyes.
He refused to back down, holding eye contact. “Yes.” It was an obvious lie.
She chuckled dryly, “if you wanted to slather my body in coconut oil, you could’ve just asked. Besides, his wife will be there, so you won’t have Elijah entirely alone and Nancy Williamson is innocent as it stands. In fact, so is he.” She sincerely wished Nancy was blameless despite meager chances. Bucky stayed silent, which prompted a corner of y/n’s mouth to curl up into a snarky smile, “the slathering my body in coconut oil part wasn’t an actual invitation.”
“Tell me doll,” he leaned against the guard rail, sarcasm clinging to his tone, “why would I ever take it as such? Unless,” James glanced at the broad horizon before his eyes found hers again, “we have spent five years maliciously clashing without a solid cause, so we should stop pretending and kiss.” His voice retained less mockery than she was comfortable with.
The woman had no desire for James to kiss her, but the deeper into her memories she dug, the fewer reasons for their hostile relationship she could think of. Yes, he had been an asshole, and he had become inhospitable first, but if anyone else had realized why, they had failed to inform her.
Steve, she thought, I have to call Steve.
Captain America was an objectively unbiased man, but he and Bucky Barnes were best of pals, brothers since childhood who had been miraculously reunited after seventy years. The hardships of the past and the future had only gotten them closer. Though he would never blatantly display favoritism amongst the people who worked at the compound, it was clear he had a favorite of a single James Buchanan Barnes. She had zero clue if James had been planning to inform Steve of Elijah or not, but she had to get in contact with the captain first because he’d, presumably, believe Bucky over y/n as unfair as it was.
Mark Basso was not a fight she could win alone — she needed Steve’s help and advice on more matters than she had once considered.

national anthem:older!steve x black fem!reader
summary: steve harrington is running for president of the united states as the democratic nominee. he's polling well, people like him because he actually intends to keep his campaign promises, he's got great hair and a cute dog.
there's one problem: he doesn't do relationships, he's been seen doing the walk of shame too many times and his campaign manager has had enough. he needs a wife, or a least someone to smile and wave his messy ass through election season before disappearing into obscurity.
that's where you come in.
you're a sweet virgin kindergarten teacher who looks like disney animated birds help you get dressed in the morning. on paper you're perfect for the job and you have student loan and medical debt so you will silk press and laugh your way to the democratic national convention.
here's the thing:
you can't stand his pompous ass and he gets all tongue tied and sweaty when he gets within 2 feet of you.
it's gonna be a long fucking campaign.
bonus: here's two songs that are the background music in this chapter. can you figure out which song goes with what scene? I'd love to know your guesses.
angel - halle bailey
death of me - pvris
chapter one: washington, d.c.
“They’re calling you The Future Slut in Chief, Steve.”
Erica threw a paper in Steve’s lap, pinching the bridge of her nose before sinking into a chair to drink her iced coffee, the only thing to keep her from reaching across the table and throttling the future President of The United States.
Steve looked down at The New York Post, a picture of him in his boxers leaving someone’s apartment dead center. He shrugged, putting his feet on the table and leaning back in his chair.
“I look great and besides it’s the New York Post, nobody reads The New York Post, Sinclair. After the speech today no one will give two shits about that, nothing to worry about.” He said, shoving his sunglasses back on his face to block out the fluorescent lighting.
Four more newspapers with nearly identical pictures knocked the sunglasses right off his face and the forty year old nearly fell out of his chair.
“You can’t throw things at me, that’s treason.”
“Not yet.” Erica said sweetly.
“They’re making fancams of you and I quote, ‘ your slutty little waist.” Holly Wheeler said, Erica’s assistant said with a giggle, showing her boss her phone, the same bridge of some Cardi B. song filling the conference room over and over again.
“Send me that to me, won’t you Holly?” Steve said, reaching for his coffee.
“Do not send that to him Holly.” Erica sighed, pushing Steve’s legs off the table before standing up.
“Look Harrington, I joined this campaign because I believed in you. You had feasible ideas, a moral compass, the hair of a Kennedy and so much money I sometimes want to call the IRS for fun.”
“What was that last one-
“Never mind that. Everything about you screams all american but because you don’t have a partner or spouse, to the general public it also screams ‘I may or may not have people in my basement.’ Nobody likes a single male president.”
“James Buchanan never married.” Steve grumbled.
Steve Harrington didn’t do relationships, he had his fun every night, came home to his dog and empty apartment and focused on doing some good in his community with the outrageous inheritance his father left him.
There was no time for wives or husbands and that’s exactly how he liked it.
“James Buchanan thought a dime was enough money to live on so maybe not the best example. Steve, you have a chance to be the next leader of this country but doing the walk of shame at your prehistoric age is not going to get the votes you need.”
Erica was absolutely right but Steve would be damned if he said so.
“You need someone at your side for the last leg of the campaign and I’ve taken care of it. She’s been checked out and briefed, you’ll meet her on stage tonight when you introduce her, I’ve had Nancy edit your speech.”
“What the fuck Erica!” Steve yelled but Erica ignored him.
“She’s smarter than you, beautiful, and most importantly, she’s likable. So if you want to sit in the Oval Office for the next four years, you’ll wear the Tom Ford suit and act like this is the greatest love story ever told. You don’t have to talk to her outside of events if you don’t want to but you will do this. I have yet to fail you so trust that I can do the job you pay me handsomely for. Got it?”
No.
Absolutely not.
There was no way he was going through with this.
“To wrap up my speech so we can all get home safely, I want to introduce you to someone. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, to this campaign, to this country! I’m so proud to finally introduce my fiancée, let’s give her a big hand!” Steve said with a big smile at the cheering crowd, proud of the fact that he didn’t immediately vomit when the word fiancée came out of his mouth.
The click-clack of your heels coming up a staircase had Steve’s heart in his throat. At some point his clapping was no longer forced as he waited for the worst blind date of his life to appear on stage.
“Get it together Harrington, turn on the charm for two minutes and get the fuck out of here.” He thought to himself.
He could handle this.
Two seconds later, he was wrong.
So, very, wrong.
If there were words to truly describe how beautiful you were, Steve did not know them.
How could he?
How would ecstasy describe ecstasy?
Fuck.
Like Erica drilled into him a thousand times before the DC rally began, he reached out his hand to you, now enveloped in the scent of orchids and shea butter, and brought you into his arms for the world’s gentlest and fastest embrace. Your lips met with Steve’s cheek with a sweet laugh that made the crowd go wild as you pushed him forward towards the mic.
But no words came out.
That man was so busy looking at you he didn’t know the closing to his speech, the stump speech he had been giving for months now, the one he could recite in his sleep and accidentally yelled out during sex that one time.
A full ten seconds of uncomfortable silence with a sweaty man had you suddenly in front of the mic.
“I’m so happy to be a part of this once in a lifetime event supporting Steve! We’ve got a lot of work to do to get to the ballot box but we are ready to elevate and encourage our beautiful country towards a brighter future! Good night everyone, drive safe!” You nearly yelled into the mic, applause bursting through the audience.
You were quickly ushered backstage away from journalists, happy to get out as just as quickly as possible but Steve followed right with you.
“I-I had that back there!” Your fiance and future president choked out.
“Oh, so you can talk, wonderful! A thank you for saving your ass or a nice to meet you would suffice. I didn’t know a presidential nominee much less an adult man could drool like an infant but you’re full of surprises Mr. Harrington.” You said, rolling your eyes.
“I was not drooling!”
“My shoulder’s all wet Mr. President. Are we done here, can I go now?” You asked, turning your attention to Erica.
“I’m so glad you two are getting along! One more picture for all the socials and then you are free to go, Hopper and your security detail will make sure you get to your hotel safely.” Erica said, grabbing her phone for the picture.
“Big smiles, you two!”
You still couldn’t get over the fact that 24 hours ago, you were crying yourself to sleep wondering how you were going to pay your bills and get back on your insurance and now you’re prom posing with America’s Next Top Leader.
“I couldn’t have possibly drooled on you, you wanna know why?” Steve said through a frozen smile.
“Not really.”
“If I got the next First Lady of The United States all wet, you’d know, honey.” He whispered in your ear.
Motherfucker.
Next stop: Maryland! I hope you enjoyed this, I’m not too sure if it's any good :)

James Buchanan
James Buchanan was a big, loud, very sociable guy who loved the social scene. He'd tell jokes, dance with all the women. He also had a condition where his eyes looked in two different directions, so it was immediately noticeable that he wasn't looking at you with both his eyes.
Despite this sociable nature, James Buchanan is the only president who was never married. This is widely believed to be because he was homosexual. He was engaged to a woman when he was in his twenties, but she broke off the engagement for mysterious reasons. She died not long after, and her family believed she died of a broken heart, so they refused to let Buchanan attend the funeral, and Buchanan never attempted marriage again.
In Washington, Buchanan lived for years with William Rufus King, a senator from Alabama, who people called Buchanan's "better half". Buchanan himself was sometimes called "Aunt Nancy", which was a term at the time for effeminate homosexuals. Presidential was pretty good about understanding that homosexuality wasn't an identity in the 1850s the same way it is today, but Buchanan's tendencies seem to have been common knowledge at the time, and it's pretty likely that this relationship was a romantic one.

LUCY AT THE JUNCTION
"Petticoat Junction" and The Lucycoms
Although thematically the shows created by Lucille Ball were worlds apart from the quaint antics in Hooterville's Shady Rest Hotel, there were artistic and creative commonalities that are worth discussing.
"Petticoat Junction" ran from 1963 to 1970, while "The Lucy Show" ran from 1962 to 1968, both on CBS TV. "Petticoat Junction" was filmed at General Service Studios, where "I Love Lucy" began filming until it moved to larger quarters.
Like Kate Bradley, Lucy Carmichael and Lucy Carter are widows raising teenage girls while trying also to earn a living, a popular trope of the 1960s and '70s.
To vary storylines, "I Love Lucy" added a dog and a baby, as did "Petticoat Junction." Animal trainer Frank Inn worked on both shows, as well as on "Here's Lucy."
Both shows went from black and white to color in October 1965. Although "The Lucy Show" had filmed its second season in color, CBS declined to air it in color.
SHARING THE TYPEWRITER
Writer Seaman Jacobs penned six episodes of "Petticoat Junction" in 1963-64 and three of "The Lucy Show" in 1967. Fred S. Fox co-wrote one of those episodes with Jacobs. Fox also wrote one 1965 episode of "Petticoat Junction." Fox's co-writer for that episode was Irving 'Iz' Elinson, who wrote a dozen episodes of "The Lucy Show."
SHARED CASTING
Their "Petticoat Junction" characters are in parentheses, followed by their Lucycom / Desilu credits.
Bea Benadaret (Kate Bradley) first starred with Lucille Ball on her radio series "My Favorite Husband" (1948-1951), primarily as best friend Iris Atterbury. Benadaret was Ball's first choice to play Ethel Mertz on "I Love Lucy," but she was already contracted to play Blanche Morton on "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show", another best friend character. Ball still managed to cast her as a one-off character, Miss Lewis, an elderly spinster, on season 1 of "I Love Lucy."
Edgar Buchanan (Uncle Joe Carson) appeared with Lucille Ball on a 1971 "Merv Griffin Show" saluting director George Marshall, for whom both worked. For Desilu, Buchanan appeared on a 1958 episode of "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" and a 1959 episode of their helicopter series "Whirlybirds".
Frank Cady (Sam Drucker) appeared for Desilu in "December Bride" (1956), "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1959), "Guestward Ho!" (1961), "The Untouchables" (1962), "The Danny Thomas Show" (1960), "Glynis" (1963), and a 1963 unsold pilot titled "Swingin' Together."
Charles Lane (Homer Bedloe) appeared in 7 films with Lucille Ball between 1933 and 1949. He was also heard on her radio show "My Favorite Husband". On "I Love Lucy," he played 4 characters and 2 more on "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour." He was cast as banker Barnsdahl on "The Lucy Show," but was released after 4 episodes so that Ball could hire Gale Gordon. He went from Desilu to Hooterville.
Byron Foulger (Banker Guerney / Wendell Gibbs) first appeared with Lucille Ball in the Westinghouse industrial film Ellis in Freedomland (1952). On "I Love Lucy" he played the spokesman of The Friends of the Friendless in “Lucy’s Last Birthday” (ILL S2;E25) in 1953. in 1965′s “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) he played henpecked husband Fred Dunbar. Two years later, Foulger was back on “The Lucy Show” to play Mr. Trindle, owner of a jewelry store supposedly robbed by Lucy in “Lucy Meets the Law” (TLS S5;E19), his last appearance opposite Lucille Ball. For Desilu, he was seen in "December Bride" (1957 & 1958) and "The Untouchables" (1959).
Elvia Allman (Selma Plout / Gladys Stroud / Cora Watson) was heard with Lucille Ball on "My Favorite Husband" before playing the strident Candy Factory Forewoman on "I Love Lucy." Allman returned to the show as one of Minnie Finch’s neighbors in “Fan Magazine Interview” (ILL S3;E17) in 1954 and prim magazine reporter Nancy Graham in “The Homecoming” (ILL S5;E6) in 1955. She made two appearances on “The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour“ - first as Ida Thompson, Westfield’s PTA director, then as Milton Berle's private secretary. Allman would also be seen on two episodes of “The Lucy Show" as a customer in a department store and the manager of an employment agency. Allman’s final screen appearance with Lucille Ball reunited her with Bob Hope: “Bringing Back Vaudeville” in 1971. For Desilu, Allman was seen on "December Bride" (1954-59), and "The Ann Sothern Show" (1958).
Kay E. Kuter (Newt Kiley) made an appearance in the 1970 TV movie Swing Out, Sweet Land with Jack Benny and Lucille Ball. He was seen on "Here's Lucy" as a singing Canadian Mountie in 1971. For Desilu he was seen on "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" (1957 & 1958).
Jack Bannon (Roger Budd / 9 Others) was the real-life son of Bea Benadaret. He was briefly seen on "Here's Lucy" in 1971.
Eddie Albert (Oliver Wendell Douglas) first co-starred with Lucille Ball in The Fuller Brush Girl (1950). Albert played himself on a 1973 episode of “Here’s Lucy” titled “Lucy Gives Eddie Albert the Old Song and Dance” (HL S6;E6). He also appeared with Ball on an episode of "The Carol Burnett Show" (1968). For Desilu, he appeared on "The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1958) and "The Greatest Show on Earth" (1963).
Eva Gabor (Lisa Douglas) played romance novelist Eva Von Graunitz in “Lucy and Eva Gabor” (S1;E7) in 1968 as well as herself in a 1972 epsidoes set in a hospital room.
Hank Patterson (Fred Ziffel) appeared in an episode of the Desilu western "The Sheriff of Cochise" in 1957, "The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1958), "Guestward Ho!" (1961), and "The Untouchables" (1960-1962).
Barbara Pepper (Doris - aka Ruthie - Ziffel) was a Goldwyn Girl with Lucille Ball making 6 films together and becoming good friends. On the list of possible actors to play Ethel Mertz, she was in 10 episodes of "I Love Lucy" as various characters.
Roy Roberts (Norman Curtis / Game Warden Hughes) was first seen with Lucille Ball was in an uncredited role in Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949). Roberts joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” at the start of season five, but not as the role he would become known for, bank president Mr. Cheever in 14 episodes, but as the Admiral in “Lucy and the Submarine” (TLS S5;E2) in September in 1966. Roberts returned to Lucille Ball Productions for 5 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” For Desilu he appeared in a 1955 episode of "December Bride."
Paul Wilbur (Bert Smedley) played Mr. Wilbur, owner of the ice cream parlor, in "Lucy is a Soda Jerk" (1962). For Desilu, he was seen on a 1963 episode of "The Greatest Show on Earth."
Parley Baer (Judge Madison / Judge Turner / 3 Others) did four episodes of the radio version of "Green Acres" “Grandby’s Green Acres” starring Bea Benadaret, a summer fill-in for Lucille Ball’s “My Favorite Husband.” Baer appeared in 2 episodes of "I Love Lucy," and 5 of "The Lucy Show." On “Here’s Lucy” he played Dr. Cunningham, Harry Carter’s psychiatrist. For Desilu he was seen in "Whirlybirds," "December Bride," and "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse."

Sarah Selby (Mrs. Frisby / Mrs. Grundy / 3 Others) was heard as Liz's mother on Lucy's radio show "My Favorite Husband." She played bachelorette Dorothy Cook on "I Love Lucy."
Barry Kelley (Sheriff Crandall / Hurley Feasel) played the Mayor of Bancroft on "The Lucy Show". For Desilu he appeared on "The Untouchables," "Whirlybirds," and "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse."
Jonathan Hole (Hank Thackery / Mr. Bunce / Mr. Earnshaw) was in 3 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and 2 of "Here's Lucy." For Desilu he was seen in "The Adventures of Jim Bowie."
William O'Connell (Martin Evans / Mr. Agnew) was seen as a Beverly Hills hotel manager on "The Lucy Show" in 1967.
Herbie Faye (Jack Stewart / Doodles / 2 Others) was in a 1968 episode of “The Lucy Show.” and 4 episodes of “Here’s Lucy”. Ball did a 1959 cameo on "Sergeant Bilko" on which he played Fender for 139 episodes. He also did an episode of "Mothers-in-Law" for Desi Arnaz.
Shirley Mitchell (Mae Belle Jennings) became friends with Lucille Ball in the late 1940s when she was featured in 4 episodes of “My Favorite Husband.” Mitchell reunited with Lucille Ball on “I Love Lucy” playing Marion Strong, member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League.
Jean Vander Pyl (Agnes Frisby / Gladys Miller / Alice Tuttle) was heard with Bea Benadaret on Lucille Ball's radio show "My Favorite Husband." Benadaret and Vander Pyl voiced Wilma and Betty on "The Flintstones."
Peter Leeds (Syd Sparks / Gus Clegg) was heard on “My Favorite Husband." On "I Love Lucy" he was the reporter questioning the Maharincess of Franistan in “The Publicity Agent” (ILL S1;E31). He starred with Lucy in the films The Long, Long Trailer (1953) and The Facts of Life (1960). Leeds also appeared in “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) as well as an episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1971.
Hugh Beaumont (Donald Elliott / Ronnie Beackman) is best known as Ward Cleaver in "Leave it to Beaver," but also appeared uncredited in Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) starring Lucille Ball. For Desilu, he was seen in "Whirlybirds".
Hal Smith (Ben Miller / 2 Others) is probably best remembered as Otis Campbell, the town drunk, on “The Andy Griffith Show” (filmed at Desilu). He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic’s Choice. He was seen on 3 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and 1 episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1972.

Eve McVeagh (Miss Hammond) played Bert, Lucy Ricardo’s hairdresser, in “The Black Wig” (ILL S3;E26). She also made an appearance as a store clerk on "Here's Lucy."
OTHERS FROM LUCYLAND WHO VISITED THE JUNCTION:
Rolfe Sedan, Frank Aletter, Milton Frome, Herb Vigran, Amzie Strickland, Ray Kellogg, Bob Jellison, Frank Wilcox, Eddie Quillan, Robert Carson, J. Pat O'Malley, Florence Lake, Ernest Truex, Dorothy Konrad, George O'Hanlon, Jack Collins, Ross Elliott, Iris Adrian, William Lanteau, Joi Lansing, Bernie Kopell, Lyle Talbot, Stanley Addams, Doris Packer, Don Brodie, Frank Nelson, Rich Little, Joan Blondell, Nancy Kulp, Sid Melton, Keith Andes, Hayden Rorke, Dick Patterson, Irwin Charrone, Rudy Vallee, Lloyd Corrigan, Jackie Joseph, and Barbara Morrison.
HOOTERVILLE & THE LUCVERSE
There were several Lucycoms that took place aboard trains, but the most notable is "The Great Train Robbery" (1955). Lucy and Desi took a publicity photo in front of the infamous emergency break wearing crumpled conductors caps. On this trip, Frank Nelson played the conductor pushed to his limit by Lucy Ricardo, a role he reprised when Lucy Carmichael took the train to Washington DC in 1963.
Coincidentally, Nelson appeared on "Petticoat Junction" in 1967, but not as a conductor, as the manager of the Flamingo Room in Springdale. He has the distinction of being the only actor to play two recurring characters (Freddy Fillmore and Ralph Ramsey) on "I Love Lucy."
In "Joe Saves the Post Office" (1969), Joe, Janet and Bobbie Jo travel to Washington DC to talk to their Congressman. They end up meeting the President. At the time, the office was occupied by Richard M. Nixon, who is represented only by an extended hand for Joe to shake and he does not speak nor is he mentioned by name. In 1963's "Lucy Visits the White House", Lucy, Viv, and their scout troupe travel to Washington DC to present the President with a sugar cube White House. In this case, the episode mentions the President's name: John F. Kennedy. He has a few off screen lines at the end of the episode, voiced by Elliott Reid. In retrospect, both these episodes conjur unhappy memories. Kennedy was asassinated and Nixon resigned in scandal.
Hooteville's train depot can best be compared to the whistle stop of Greenview in "Lucy Visits the White House" (1963). Greenview was a remote stop located somewhere between Danfield and DC.
Bancroft, California, the small town featured in "Main Street USA" and "Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map" (1967) was a town somewhat bigger than Hooterville, but smaller than Pixley. Lucy and Mr. Mooney arrived there by train to save their main street from becoming a superhighway.
Bancroft had a general store run by Doc Putnam. It featured a large red coffee grinder, just like Sam Drucker's general store in Hooterville.
The Mayor Bancroft was played by Barry Kelley, who appeared on "Petticoat Junction" as Sheriff Crandall. Bancroft citizens included Burt Mustin, who played Grandpa Jenson in three 1968 episodes of "Petticoat Junction" and Hal Smith, who played Mr. Richardson / Ben Miller / Jug Gunderson on "Junction."
During the series' last season, the character of Jerry Roberts was introduced as a possible boyfriend for Billie Jo - until she finds out he's already married. In real life, actors Greg Mullavey and Meredith McRae were man and wife. On "Here's Lucy," Lucie Arnaz's husband Phil Vandervoort was also part of the cast. Sadly, both marriages were short-lived.
A railroad handcar was prominently featured in "Lucy Hunts Uranium" (1958) featuring Fred MacMurray. In Hooterville, it was generally manned by Homer Bedloe (Charles Lane), who was also featured as a Claims Officer in "Lucy Hunts Uranium." Also in the hour-long "Lucy-Desi" episode Bob Jellison plays a Las Vegas bellboy. In Hooterville, Jellison played a salesman in 1968 and Ben Miller in 1970, the 4th and final actor to play that role. That episode also featured Lucyverse performers Sarah Selby and Parley Baer. It was directed by Elliott Lewis, producer of "The Lucy Show" and Desi Arnaz's "Mothers-in-Law" as well as husband of Lucy sidekick Mary Jane Lewis.
In 1969's "One of Our Chickens Are Missing" (S7; E4) of the final season, Hooterville is plagued by chicken thieves in the former of a biker gang. Harry Dean Stanton plays Ringo, who is 'saving up for a pillow'. Lucy and Viv also encounter biker gangs in a 1967 episode of "The Lucy Show" set on the notorious Sunset Strip.
In 1969's "The Camping Trip" (S7;E5), the entire family packs up and goes camping in the woods. They go fishing and Uncle Joe comes face to face with a bear, "The Camping Trip" was also the title of a 1953 episode of "I Love Lucy" where Lucy and Ricky also go fishing. In "The Lucy Show's" "Lucy Becomes a Father" (1964) Lucy Carmichael also comes face to face with a bear.
"Goodbye, Mr. Chimp" (S7;E12) introduces a chimpanzee to the Shady Rest. Uncle Joe buys the chimp as a gift for his infant niece. Two years earlier on "The Lucy Show," Lucy Carmichael also featured a chimp - actually three - in "Lucy The Babysitter". The popularity of chimpanzees on sitcoms can be attributed to The Marquis Chimps, the (non-human) stars of the sitcom “The Hathaways” (1961-62) in which a suburban couple kept three performing chimps as their children.
The iconic Shady Rest Hotel is reminiscent of The Eagle Hotel, where Lucy and Ricky stayed in "The Marriage License" (1952). Running the Eagle Hotel are Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby (played by Irving Bacon and Elizabeth Patterson), who are reminiscent of Uncle Joe and Kate Bradley, who run the Shady Rest. In season one, Uncle Joe schemes to market the Shady Rest as a 'honeymoon hotel.'
Richard Arlen and Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, the stars of the 1929 silent film Wings, the first film to win an Academy Award, were guest stars as themselves on both "Petticoat Junction" (1968) and "The Lucy Show" (1967). Both appearances revolved around their appearance in the film.
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was introduced in 1923 by the nephew of suffragette Susan B. Anthony. Thirty years later "I Love Lucy" tackled female equality, culminating in the boys insisting the girls pay their own dinner checks. In 1967 The National Organization for Women (NOW), pledged to fight tirelessly for the ratification of the ERA. On February 7, 1970, "Petticoat Junction" finally got around to the subject by inventing WITCH (Women In True Cultural Heritage) and having Billy Jo storm a barber shop in tailored suit. That same month, twenty NOW leaders disrupted hearings of the Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments, demanding the ERA be heard by the full Congress.
"Petticoat Junction" and "The Lucy Show" were both part of a DVD set titled The Best of Family TV.

Oh yeah, apparently Andrew Jackson had a habit of calling King and Buchanan “Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" respectively.
Let it be noted that "Miss Nancy" was a common term in the day for someone who dressed well and had good manners (similar to "dandy"). "Aunt Fancy" was probably meant in a similar vein.
Knowing Jackson, my guess is he was teasing the two's fastidious fretting over fashion and public perception (things Jackson was relatively indifferent to) rather than anything regarding their relationship. Of all people, Jackson was the last person who'd presume their relationship as being anything other than romantic-friendship.
I was skeptic on Jackson being mean to them for their friendship. Or even think that they had more than friendship.
So I really agree with what you're saying!
I can't think of Jackson being able to see their relationship more then friendship...😅

DPF Familiar Faces: Nancy Brunning
NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!
Shortland Street (1996/1992-1994)
Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996. Nancy played Nurse Jaki Manu from 1992-1994 per imdb.
When Love Comes (1998)
Dean played Mark. Nancy played Fig.
Fig and Sally have a band, and they (mostly Sally) keep Mark drugged up so he'll write good lyrics for them. While Sally doesn't seem to have much concern for Mark's well-being, there are a few times in the movie where Fig seems to be shown as an actual friend/at least caring somewhat about him.
The Cult (2009)
Dean played Liam in S1E10 "The Other Woman". Nancy played Mrs. Thomas in S1E1 "The Calling".
The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2018)
Dean played Barnaby Buchanan in S5E4 "The Dark Angel". Nancy played Magdalena in S5E1 "Scared to Death".
--
That's what I have for these two - let me know if I missed anything.
Sadly Nancy Brunning passed away in 2019 at the age of 48, nine years after being diagnosed with cancer. (Per Wikipedia.)

Setting A President - Film Review: Lover Of Men: The Untold History Of Abraham Lincoln ★★★½
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say to me lately, “Pete Buttigieg will be our first gay President some day.” Hell, I’ve even said it myself a number of times. But what if we’ve already had one or two, albeit not openly so? Rumors have abounded over the years that James Buchanan, POTUS #15 and the only bachelor President, was a gay man who had a relationship with our 13th Vice President, William Rufus King. Some, including Andrew Jackson referred to the pair as “Aunt Fancy” and “Miss Nancy”. While Buchanan’s legacy has seemed less than stellar, not long after, the man considered one of our arguably greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, may have also been gay. Shaun Peterson certainly makes a compelling case in his fascinating new documentary, Lover Of Men: The Untold History Of Abraham Lincoln.
While not groundbreaking in its approach, utilizing a mixture of talking heads from historians and activists, dialogue-free recreations, and excerpts from existing letters, Peterson nonetheless makes a convincing and moving case for Lincoln’s homosexuality. Furthermore, he’s created something moving which astutely links the past to the present.
Throughout the film, we see Lincoln’s involvement with four men, with one in particular, Joshua Speed, ostensibly serving as the love of his life. Peterson certainly has the receipts to prove his point by dipping into Lincoln’s own correspondence, sometimes backed up by observations of those in his circle. Sure, some have said the nature of same sex friendships at the time allowed for overt displays of affection and shared sleeping arrangements, but the film makes the case for historical erasure. It strongly states that this happened and those in power don’t want the public to know about it.
One can’t deny Lincoln would sign letters to Speed with the words, “Yours forever”, which he never would do in letters to his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. He’d also speak of a fear of women and opted to share a small bed with Speed even when offered his own room. I found myself touched deeply when Speed ended his relationship with Lincoln by marrying a woman, thus encouraging Abe to do the same. It may have been for Lincoln’s political gain, but it doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking.
Pundits in the documentary speak of the cultural demands to tuck anything gay away by hiding behind such marriages. The last act carries us from that age of the closet to today, where so many, especially in politics, have lived openly and proudly. I could have done without the end credit Diana Ross needle drop and the Ziggy Stardust-ing of Lincoln’s face, which I feel take away a bit from the pathos of his life, but Peterson’s reaching out to younger generations feels admirable nonetheless. Yes, this film could easily slot itself right into a History Channel program, but the use of recreations adds a cinematic touch which makes for a lovely collective experience in a theater. I’m really grateful this film exists, bolstering what used to be a lot of cocktail party chatter. It makes me so proud of our forebears. Pete Buttigieg may end up making Presidential history some day, but if so, he stands on the shoulders of at least two others.
Lover Of Men: The Untold History Of Abraham Lincoln opens in theaters only on September 6th. Lover Of Men has partnered with HRC; those who purchase tickets to see the film in theaters this weekend via the link below will directly benefit The Human Rights Campaign.

RNC Night 4: GOP Wants Voters To Forget | Hulk Hogan Turns RNC Into WWE ...
COMMENTARY:
This election comes down to the choice between James Baldwin's BLM;Critical Race Theory;DEI social construct versus the origins of Project 2025, William F. Buckley's "Negro Problem" rebuttal, The Project 2025 Convention to nominate their favorite felon, Donald J, Trump, in an attempt to conduct a violent revolution at the ballot box with a Stalin-eq Purge when they come to office. Go chech out what Castro did when he did what Project 2025 proposes to accomplish this election, And all these people applauding think they are rational beings by promoting Steve Bannon's Manchurian Candicate if he was George Lincoln Rockwelll, Their rhetoric all sounds like Pitchfork Pat Buchanan's 1992 Presidential Run, And, probably, in Broward County in the 2000 butterfly ballot election, J,D, Vance is talking like George Lincoln Rockwell by way of his naval service, The Navy reliably turns out right wing nuts and white supremacists going back to when John Paul Jones was the Biggest Swinging Dick in the ROom,, Like Marcion before he was excommunicated, Vance was in the Navy, DiSantis was in the Navy, George Lincoln Rockwell was in the Navy, L. Ron Hubbard was in the Navy, But, then, so was JFK. Which makes my point, Khrusheve hadn't gotten the memo about the biggest swing dick thing before he went to Moscow or he was like that Shania Twain song "That don't impress me much" and it had nothing to do with Milton Berle, From the Hegelian perspective of the coninuing Boomer food Fight, the GOP presented the Project 2025 side of the Oliver Stone version of Vietnam based on the Post Modern Historic Deconsruction market place of ideas. Now,, it is my expectation that the Democrats will present the Camelot side of the Oliver Stone version of Vietnam and, if I have to make a choice, I''d do with that if Hegel didn't exist. But when you add Hegel and Clausewitz back into the mix of Ken Burns Vietnam, the treachery of Project 2025 since 1960 becomes existentially transparent. Providing Trump the free media he requires to exist will not defeat him at the polls, Giving as much free media to how the Biden/Harris Build Back Better capital budget is completing Reagan's New Federalism as the last step before the national mobilization to grow the Green New Deal. Eisenhower's1956 Prsidential Platform was a D-Day kind of operational blue print to reconfigure the global Military Industrial Comples into the economics of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Reagan's New Federalism was an important milesote in the development phase of Stage 2, which is the social, material and legislative infrastructure in place to begin to grow the Green New Deal. We were a cunt hair aways from doing that in 1981 if Carter had been reelected, Reagan was running on his experience as a Governor and was going to take credit for completing Stage 2 of Eisenhower's transformation process as the New Federalism, If he had carried through with that campaing promise, he would have won a Nobel Prized in either Economics or Political Science or both, He would have been applauded for a brilliant innovation that began with D-Day, The thing is, the cunt haair that has kept Reagan's New Federalism from happening has been Project 2025 since he was assassinated, His Alzehimer's was muvh farter advanced than anybody noticed because he was a long haul gin drinker and the effects of the Juniper Berriers over time mimic Alzheime's from a bar tenders perspective. So, nobody noticed. But he gave Gorbachev the reassurance to pull the plug on the Soviety Union and then both of them were double-corssed by Donald T. Regan, who was running the Oval Office until Nancy fired his ass. So, Turn your attention to all the under shovel projects of Biden'Harris generational transfer of the Toruch of Camelot to Gen Z as the 4X100 anchor handoll for Gold.
