How To Get Your Man To Care For His Skin
If you’re anything like me, then you’ve probably embarked on your own journey trying to get your man to take care of his skin. Six years down the line, I can confidently say that my man now knows all about double cleansing, extraction, and the importance of daily SPF. It only took us six years!
Tumblr media
When it comes to male skin, the main differences between men and women are twofold: men genetically have oilier skin and they also have facial hair—thick, coarse facial hair! I understand that adopting a skincare routine that penetrates beneath that beard can be a bit daunting. But that doesn’t mean our partners are exempt from skincare. Here are some tips to help educate your man to view his skin as an investment rather than a chore
1. Make him talk
By this, I mean get him used to talking about his skin. For example, you could ask him how his skin feels that day – is it dry, sensitive, oily, or congested? By asking him this simple question, it can help you and him incorporate a certain product/s into his routine that will start targeting that concern.
2. Use easy terminology
Keep your discussion around skincare with him simple. He doesn’t need to know how that serum is going to promote collagen synthesis, or how this cream can prevent free radical damage. Keep it simple by letting him know that the serum he just used can prevent ageing, or how that certain SPF reduces pigmentation caused by the sun.

Essential Dental Care Practices for Optimal Oral Health
Good day, esteemed readers! Today, let's embark on a journey to explore the vital importance of oral health and the profound connection it has to our overall well-being. It's no secret that a healthy smile is a gateway to confidence and a key factor in our general health.
In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the daily dental hygiene routine, nutritional tips for healthy teeth, the significance of regular dental check-ups and cleanings, and strategies for protecting your teeth from damage.
Section 1: Daily Dental Hygiene Routine
Let's begin with the cornerstone of oral health – your daily dental hygiene routine. The simple act of brushing your teeth is the first step in maintaining optimal oral hygiene. Brushing not only freshens your breath but also removes plaque and prevents the dreaded development of cavities and gum disease.
It's recommended to brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, with a focus on each tooth surface and the gumline. Remember, the way you brush is equally important. Use gentle, circular motions, and ensure you're not brushing too hard, as this can damage your gums and enamel.
Flossing is another indispensable component of your Affordable Dental Care West Auckland outine. It targets the areas between your teeth and below the gumline, where your toothbrush can't reach. When done correctly, flossing helps in the removal of plaque, food particles, and prevents the buildup of tartar.
To floss like a pro, gently slide the floss between your teeth, following the curves of each tooth. When you reach the gumline, curve the floss into a "C" shape and carefully slide it into the space between the gum and tooth.
Mouthwash, though not a substitute for brushing and flossing, plays a valuable role in maintaining oral hygiene. It reaches areas that may have been missed during brushing and flossing, and helps in reducing oral bacteria. When using mouthwash, swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds to 1 minute, ensuring it reaches all areas, and then spit it out.
Tumblr media
Section 2: Nutritional Tips for Healthy Teeth
The impact of diet on dental health cannot be overstated. Consuming sugary and acidic foods and beverages can contribute to tooth decay and erosion. It's advisable to limit the intake of sugary snacks and drinks, and if consumed, to do so during meal times to minimise the exposure of teeth to acids and sugars.
On the other hand, foods rich in calcium, such as dairy products, and those high in fiber, like fruits and vegetables, play a significant role in promoting strong teeth and healthy gums. Additionally, crunchy fruits and vegetables can help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath.
Section 3: Regular Dental Check-Ups and Cleanings
No matter how diligent your oral care routine is, regular dental visits are imperative for maintaining optimal oral health. Dentists can detect early signs of dental issues, provide professional cleaning to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, and offer personalised advice on how to improve your oral care routine.
It's recommended to schedule dental check-ups and cleanings at least twice a year, but some individuals may require more frequent visits based on their unique dental needs. During a routine dental appointment, you can expect a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth, as well as dental X-rays if deemed necessary.
Section 4: Protecting Your Teeth from Damage
Beyond the daily dental care West Auckland and professional cleanings, it's crucial to protect your teeth from potential harm. For individuals engaging in sports activities, the use of mouthguards is highly recommended to shield teeth from injury.
Additionally, it's essential to avoid harmful habits like nail-biting and using teeth as tools, as these behaviours can lead to chipped or cracked teeth. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption not only pose risks to your overall health but also have detrimental effects on your oral health. Both can lead to gum disease, tooth discolouration, and an increased risk of oral cancer.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our oral health is undeniably linked to our overall well-being.
By prioritising a daily dental hygiene routine, making wise nutritional choices, scheduling regular dental check-ups, and taking precautions to protect our teeth, we can significantly contribute to maintaining a healthy, radiant smile.

Regular Dog Grooming is Essential for Your Pet
Tumblr media
A journey of wagging tails and pampered paws awaits! We're exploring dog grooming in Auckland and why it's important for your pet. Regular grooming offers benefits beyond appearance, including keeping them clean and healthy and enhancing their general health. Grab a brush and prepare to learn about dog grooming for your pet. Jump right in!
How often should you groom your dog?
Groom your dog how often? The answer depends on breed, coat type, and lifestyle. Not all dogs need frequent grooming.
Poodles and Golden Retrievers with longer hair or thick coats should be groomed every 4-6 weeks. This prevents matting and tangles and keeps their fur tidy.
Trimming and shaping short-haired breeds may be easier. They still need frequent brushing to remove stray hair and maintain good skin.
In addition to brushing, your dog's ears should be cleaned periodically to prevent infections. To reduce discomfort and harm from overgrowth, nails should be trimmed every 4-6 weeks.
Don't neglect dentistry! Like humans, dogs need dental care. Use pet-safe toothpaste several times a week.
Remember that every dog is different, so tailor your grooming routine to them. They look beautiful and are healthier and happier with regular grooming!
What Kinds of Dog Groomers Exist?
Dog groomers come in many varieties. Each type meets distinct demands and provides unique services. Here are several possibilities:
1. Professional Grooming Salons: These salons groom dogs of all types and sizes full-service. They have qualified specialists for bathing, brushing, nail clipping, and haircuts.
2. Mobile Grooming: Fully-equipped vans arrive at your door for convenience. This option is great for anxious or stressed pets in new places.
3. Self-Service Dog Washes: Some pet businesses let you bathe and groom your dog in their facilities. If you like grooming your dog yourself, it's affordable.
4. DIY home grooming: DIY dog grooming is an option. Maintaining your dog's coat at home requires brushes, clippers, scissors, and shampoos.
Remember to research any groomer you choose to verify they have a solid reputation and great recommendations from local pet owners.
Finding a Reliable Dog Groomer
You want a reliable dog groomer for your pet. But with so many alternatives, how do you choose? Here are some tips for finding a dog groomer.
Ask friends, family, or your vet for advice. Firsthand accounts might reveal a groomer's talents and expertise.
Next, research online. Find local grooming salon reviews and ratings. Listen to other pet owners' positive and negative experiences.
After choosing, attend the grooming salon. Look at the facility's cleanliness and how the staff treats the dogs. A good groomer will handle pets gently and safely.
Ask questions during your visit. Ask about their experience, certifications, and services. They must understand breed-specific grooming demands.
Rely on instinct. If something feels wrong or the groomer doesn't address your questions or concerns well, you may want to look elsewhere.
Remember that a good dog groomer is essential for your pet's health, happiness, and appearance!
Luxury Dog Kennels: Treating Your Dog Well
Tumblr media
We want only the best for our pets. That includes giving them a nice and comfortable place to stay when we can't be there. Luxury dog kennels are getting more popular due to their extra amenities.
Large suites with comfy bedding, private outdoor areas, and animal-friendly TVs are common at these luxury hotels. Luxury kennels may include grooming, spa treatments, and personalized playtime.
These lavish facilities give your pet comfort while you're away and give you peace of mind knowing they're well cared for in a pet-specific environment.
Choosing a renowned luxury dog kennel ensures your dog receives the best care. Look for places with great pet owner reviews and transparency about staff qualifications and safety.
Give your pet a nice stay at one of these hotels. The extra care and pampering will make them happy, and you can relax knowing they're on vacation in style!
Positive reinforcement is key to dog training success.
Training your pet requires positive reinforcement. Instead of punishing bad behavior, this strategy rewards positive behavior. Rewards like cookies, praise, and affection can help your dog learn and obey orders.
Positive reinforcement strengthens pet-owner bonds. It promotes trust, respect, and a happy, obedient pet. Consistent, positive training will teach your dog proper behavior.
Be patient during dog training in Auckland. It's vital not to rush or get angry if dogs learn slowly. Set clear rules and expectations for your dog and make sure everyone follows them.
All dog breeds, regardless of age or size, respond well to reward-based training. Positive reinforcement helps teach simple commands like sit and stay and more advanced feats like roll over and fetch.
In addition to obedience training, positive reinforcement can help with aggression and separation anxiety. Rewarding and praising your pet can help them overcome these problems.
Regular grooming and luxury accommodations at renowned dog kennels provide an all-encompassing care for our pets. We owe our four-legged pets the love they deserve, from grooming to training.
Remember: regular grooming for health and aesthetic benefits; choose a groomer based on your preferences; find a reputable groomer who understands your dog's unique needs; indulge in luxury dog kennels for unmatched comfort; and most importantly, use positive reinforcement for successful dog training.
Adding these habits to your routine will provide your dog the finest care and help them live a long, healthy, and happy life.

PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH PT.7
PATI SOLOMONA TYRELL
Pati Solomona is an Auckland photographer exploring his Samoan heritage and queer identity with a mix of photography, film and performance art. Pati’s work has been in many exhibitions all around New Zealand and in 2018 he became the youngest person nominated for the ‘Walters Prize’ which is New Zealand’s most prestigious contemporary art award. I will be looking at a mix of Pati Solomona’s work like ‘fāgogo’ and ‘fafswag’ which were my two personal favourite bodies of his work.
Fagogo is a moving image film that works to honour pasifika traditions of storytelling and also to unpack the white colonial gaze that has been placed on queer brown bodies. The moving image represents stories and spoken fables that get passed down from generation to generation. Fagogo actually means fable in Samoan. All of the elements of the film are very well researched by Tyrell himself and then used in his directing of the moving film. From what I’ve been able to see of the film, its done in a black studio space which creates a very dramatic shadows onto the figures in Pati’s work which is only light up by colourful studio lighting like reds and blues. The people are dressed up both traditionally and with elements of modern expression like the makeup and painted nails which is another nod to the breaking down of strict gender roles. The people sometimes merge together creating an interesting form as the mythical storytelling is conveyed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also loved Fafswag which is an exploration into the queer Auckland ballroom and vogue scene. To vogue is a modern house dance which is super stylised and came out around the 1960s from ballrooms which were underground queer spaces made up mostly by LGBTQ+ African Americans and Latinos. It’s where drag really flourished from and it’s where drag pageants are hosted. Fafswag is a site and exhibition made to be explored and it features a bunch of queer pasifika artists performing in drag and doing the vogue dance style in a bunch of places around Auckland. It’s also very interactive as you can pick a ‘character’ (one of the featured artists and dancers) and then pick the location the two will dance. Then after watching to two dance off you can even pick a winner and then it lets you learn about the story of your chosen artist. I had a lot of fun checking out this website as I’m a sucker for an interactive exhibition and learning tool because it really hooks me in and gets me excited to learn. Also just this subject matter is something that I care a lot about. The filmography here too is also really astounding, there were times I wasn’t sure if the people were actually filmed in the physical location or if it was editing but just because the editing was incredibly smooth and the coloured studio lighting making an appearance again amplifies each person in almost an unbelievable way.

But you do not have to get perplexed as a reliable property management service provider can help you a great deal handling this issue. If you own a property in New Zealand and are planning to rent it out or seeking a property manager, we can assist you with the best property management services in Auckland.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, there are people who keep looking for the best rental properties for them. But it’s sometimes quite tedious to find an ideal property which will not only provide you a feeling of owning a home away from home, but also fits perfectly into your budget. Today in this blog we will discuss some of the important points which can help you make you feel at home even at a rented accommodation. So run your eyes through this little piece of information to know more in detail. This will give you a better understanding of how you can personalize your property to ensure you get a homey feeling.
Styling It As Per Your Liking
To begin with, you can start with decorating the inner spaces and in particular the walls of your home. That is to say, hang your favorite art pieces, photos or use some nice wall decor to make it look more appealing and aesthetically pleasing. Coupled with this, you can also add pictures with no-nails, antique photo collection to transform the overall vibe of the place and make it feel like your own. In the end, you can swap the lighting to lift the aura of the place and change the furniture as per the decorative items in the space.
Taking Care Of The Rental Space As It Is Yours
Taking care of the space by cleaning it on a regular basis, maintaining it as per your way will make you feel like home. Also, it will create a bond with the corners of your space. In case of any damage don’t hesitate to get it repaired on your own rather than asking your landlord to do so. Another way to make your space truly yours is to ensure its safety. Safety will be ensured by setting a secured lock system and fire alarms. Furthermore, you can take insurance cover for your rental property after discussing with the landlord.
By Owning The Space
Literally you can’t own the property but legally you have the rights to call the rented property your own. You should be aware about all the clauses of the agreement to avoid any mishap in the future. Understanding of the tenancy laws is necessary if you are staying in a rented space. To be updated, you should be in touch with your property manager/landlord. Conclusively,” home sweet home” can be possible with your rented space also, the only thing you need is a reliable property manager. So, here we are, the eminent property management services in Auckland at your service.

honey, you’re familiar (like my mirror)
see other chapters, notes, and warnings here!
chapter four: symbiosis
symbiosis: interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
VIRGIL
“Uh,” Virgil says, scrambling in the face of his mother—hair wrapped for the night, blinking the sleep out of her eyes, her arms crossed, “My—myself?”
Technically true, he guesses, according to some of the sensate’s personal beliefs about the connections they share with their clusters, according to Logan according to Dot. Like having other selves scattered across the world.
Andisiwe frowns. “At this time of night?”
Virgil shrugs weakly.
She frowns deeper. Then:
“You know,” she says, looking at him very intently, “your grandmother used to talk to herself at all times of day, too.”
Virgil stays silent. His mother crouches to sit with him on the floor, settling with a long sigh.
“About anything at all,” she continues. “She’d talk about the snow when this country hadn’t seen snow for ten years. She’d laugh when no one told a joke, cried when nothing sad had happened. She’d make recipes I’d never heard of before. You remember her pitha?”
Virgil nods, confused. Of course he remembers her pitha. They’d have it at every large family gathering.
“That’s an Indian dessert. She’d never left South Africa in all her life, but she knew how to make pitha and speak Tamil like she was born in Bangalore. Just like you were speaking a language other than Xhosa or English just now.”
Oh, Virgil thinks, then, oh.
“So unless you started taking language lessons while studying for your doctorate,” she says, staring at him.
Virgil chews at the inside of his cheek.
“No,” he says hoarsely. “No, I didn’t.”
She nods, accepting this. “How long…?”
“I don’t know,” Virgil admits. “A week and a half? Two weeks?”
“Not long at all,” she murmurs. “ I suppose it might skip a generation. She told me once it started when she was a child. A horrible headache struck her, and once it let up she had seven new friends all around the world. When they were all ten, maybe.”
Ten, Virgil thinks, mind whirling. God, to deal with all this at the age of ten?
“Sensates,” Virgil croaks. “We’re called sensates.”
His mother offers him a smile.
“I know,” she says. “Tell me about them.”
“One’s here,” Virgil says, and he looks at the big, tall, tattooed man. “I don’t think I got your name last time.”
The man walks from his plush apartment rug to sit on the hardwood floor.
“Patton Taumata,” he says with Virgil’s mouth, offering a bright smile to Virgil’s mother, sitting beside him. “Māori, New Zealander.”
And then Virgil feels what Patton does next—pull seems too strong a word, but it’s the closest he has.
Sitting across from him, looking vaguely disgruntled to find himself on the ground, yet still sitting at his desk in his home office.
“Janus Slange,” he says. “London.”
He slides out of Virgil’s body to find a spot to sit that’s a bit more refined.
Patton turns his head, and Virgil turns his gaze to follow.
“Roman Regio,” the actor says, looking up from his script to gesture beside him. “And my brother, Remus. Who is currently on his way to Mexico City, which he should have done as soon as he got accused.”
“This is such a dumb plan,” Remus groans, resting his head simultaneously against the bus window and Virgil’s bed. “I want all of you batshit hallucinations to know that I don’t come up with plans this stupid. My plans are refined in the way they cause utter chaos.”
Sitting in his bed in the barracks and beside Virgil, so close their thighs almost touch, giving Virgil a thrill that shoots all the way to his fingertips—
“Logan Zieliński,” he says to Virgil’s mother, careful to sound respectful. “I was just here. I’m Polish, but I’m currently studying in Antarctica. Space research.”
They’re here. All of them here. But Virgil sees Patton reach again—
EMILE
—and Emile beams at the sight before him. Patton turns to grin at him.
“Well done!” Emile says, filled to bursting with pride.
Patton! Reliably being able to pull them all in to visit together! That kind of skill—coupled with the fact that Patton, back in his apartment in Auckland, is peaceably planning lessons with a sitcom in the background—can take other sensates months of practice to truly achieve.
“Is this your mother?” He asks Virgil.
Virgil says, “Um, Mom, my—cluster parent?”
Emile makes an eh handwavey gesture followed by a thumbs-up. “Whatever you’re comfortable with, I’m comfortable with!”
“—is here right now. His name’s—”
He speaks at the same time as Emile does.
“Dr. Emile Picani, hi there—!”
“—and he’s American.”
Virgil’s mother’s brow wrinkles in distaste, but she does a good show of trying to hide it.
“That’s fair,” Emile says. “Americans are—well, y’know. You’ve seen the news.”
“This is my mother, Dr. Andisiwe Nkosi. My grandmother was a sensate too, apparently.”
“Oh, that’s lovely!” Emile exclaims. “There are sensates within biological families, of course—” he gestures to Roman and Remus, “—but things are still up in the air about if and how being homo sensorium passes down.”
“Dot said the number of sensates is rising due to epigenetic factors,” Logan says.
“Oh, you’ve met Dot!” Emile says delightedly.
“She answered many of the questions I have,” Logan says, and for a blip, they’re all sitting in the barracks in Antarctica as Logan reaches for a notebook and pen. “But I still have many questions.”
“Entirely understandable,” Emile says.
“Wait, you got your questions answered?” Roman demands, and they’re all sitting on Roman’s apartment’s massive balcony overlooking Mexico City. “I just got this one—” he points accusingly at Janus, “telling me hey, surprise, you’re not actually losing your shit!”
Janus shrugs, and they’re all surrounded by monitors, blinking with so many different points of data it makes Emile a little dizzy. “He just showed up in the mirror while I was shaving.”
“Well,” Emile says, and they’re all in Emile’s apartment at home. Emile puts a kettle on the stove. “I’m here now. So what questions can I help you answer? Or, at least, activate the Archipelago to get some kind of answer for you. If you can think of some kind of subject, there’s probably a sensate that knows something about it, but I suppose we should probably start with the sensate-specific questions.”
Remus puts up a hand and asks, loudly, “Can I use the psychic connection with other sensates to have some kind of insane worldwide orgy?”
ROMAN
Sasha is out for a key art photoshoot, so Roman has the whole apartment to himself. Which is good, because he got a bit busy last night with the whole explanation of what exactly it is that’s been happening to him, and then yelling in disgust when Remus asked gross questions about it.
Roman’s considering if he wants to paint his nails—it’s not like he can keep it, if solely for movie continuity—just to have something to do with his hands when the door cracks open.
And in steps Remus—absolutely filthy, staring at Roman incredulously, a fake mustache plastered above his real mustache that he immediately rips off.
“It worked,” Roman says gleefully. “It worked!”
“First of all, cops ain’t shit, I probably should have expected literally every police officer to sleep on the job when seeing someone suspicious board a bus, but Jesus fuckin’ Christ, your security munches ass,” Remus declares, “They let a murderer get into your apartment.”
Roman bursts out laughing.
“It’s not funny!” Remus says, pulling off the fake beard he’d donned. “It took five pesos of stolen fake beard and mustache to fool everyone, are you fucking kidding me—?!”
Roman slides off the couch, gripping his stomach, he’s laughing so hard.
“What?!” Remus demands, throwing off the overly large trench coat he’d been huddling under.
“You,” Roman wheezes, then, “you said the plan was stupid and it wouldn’t work—!”
“It is stupid! I come up with way better plans than this, you’re telling me that you came up with the stupid kid movie plan and I didn’t?! And it shouldn’t have worked—Roman, stop laughing, your fangirls are fucking batshit crazy, could you imagine what kind of weird Wattpad shit they’d get up to if they knew how easy it was to break in here?!”
Roman is screaming with laughter, because literally all they needed was a fake mustache and beard, and ooh Roman can tell that Remus is pissed that Roman came up with this plan first because it’s such a perfectly Remus plan. He isn’t sure how much of it is a sensate thing versus a twin brother thing, but all the same, Roman knows that Remus is absolutely fuming, which makes it even funnier.
Remus storms off, shouting, “Just for this, I’m going to use up all your fancy shampoo! I’m going to take the biggest, nastiest shit in your bathroom! I’m—I’m going to eat all your soap! I will! I’ll do it! I’m eating all your soap!”
LOGAN
It’s still a little startling to look over at his notebook and suddenly find himself in South Africa, but he’s gotten a little more accustomed to it since the night before. He’s been feeling a pull to South Africa all day, like an ache deep in his chest. He isn’t entirely sure why.
Virgil glances over at him and smiles, just a little. Logan smiles back. Virgil clears his throat and returns his attention to the textbook before him.
“Roman’s plan worked,” he says.
Logan huffs, shaking his head. Honestly. It’s like those American movies when three children stack on top of each other and wear a large trenchcoat and a fake beard to gain access to the movies, but it actually worked.
In retrospect, Logan’s sure that Remus would have foregone his escape into the wilderness if he’d known that donning a disguise and having his rich brother pay away the arrest troubles and their psychically connected lawyer argue before the court would have worked so neatly.
However, considering that nearly every aspect of that plan is absolutely off the rails ridiculous, the escape into the wilderness must have seemed like a prudent measure to take at the time.
“How’s your research?” Logan asks, sitting down on Virgil’s bed.
“Pretty good,” Virgil says, his tone very casual. “I think the fact that abrus precatorius—”
“The scientific name for rosary peas,” Logan assumes. He is rewarded by a nod from Virgil.
“—isn’t native to Mexico and the fact that Remus hasn’t traveled for years on end is a pretty good basis for Janus to go on. Plus, abrin—”
“The toxin?” Logan clarifies and receives a nod.
“—is incredibly toxic, to the point where anyone ordering rosary peas would probably get pinged under some kind of monitoring system. So there wouldn’t really be a way for Remus himself to get them. Miguel Contreras, on the other hand—”
“The murder victim?” Logan says, startled.
“Yes—on the other hand, he went to Florida very recently. He got back three days before his death, in fact.”
“I thought they were native to Asia and Australia?”
“Yeah, they are, but rosary peas are an invasive species, and they’ve been clocked in the pine rocklands there,” Virgil says. “Symptoms usually occur pretty quick, but it can take up to five days to show up, depending on the method of ingestion. And considering the seed of just one pea could be fatal…”
“Then the cause of death could very well be found in Florida!” Logan says. “And the only thing they have on Remus—”
“—Are threats, exactly,” Virgil says enthusiastically. “And considering the way Remus is as a person, Janus could probably get those hand-waved away as being under jest, rather than an actual threat to kill him.”
They smile at each other again, Virgil’s lips twisting wryly.
“I’ve been wanting to visit you all day,” he says abruptly, and Logan feels that flutter in his stomach again, the one he’s been feeling since they first met; he’s willing to admit to himself that it most certainly isn’t unease, now. It is a near antonym of unease.
“I have too,” Logan admits, trying his very best to keep his voice informal.
Virgil’s smile softens, a little. “Yeah?”
“Yes,” Logan affirms, and the flutter in his stomach intensifies.
They stare at each other. Virgil’s eyes, Logan notices abruptly, are objectively beautiful. Framed by long lashes, his eyes are so dark a shade of brown they’re practically black, so easy to stare at, admiring the way a sudden shift in the lighting would illuminate the subtle honeyed depths of them.
For a moment, Logan gets a flicker; he’s looking at his own eyes, blue and framed by his glasses, but the emotion in him doesn’t change, the fleeting thought of look how gorgeous, and suddenly he is back to looking at Virgil, and, as one, they look away.
Virgil coughs awkwardly. “This sensate thing—weird, huh?”
For the first time, Logan wonders if the feeling in his stomach is not entirely his own. If it is something shared.
But, Logan thinks, sneaking a look at Virgil taking notes, twirling his pen idly over the backs of his long fingers, he supposes that neither of them would be able to tell that, anyways.
REMUS
Remus is bouncing his leg so much that the cop near him is giving him a disdainful look.
Or maybe the look is because the cop thinks he’s a murderer. Whatever.
“Are you sure this is gonna work,” Remus mutters out of the corner of his mouth because he hasn’t gotten the hang of visiting someone in his cluster and going about day-to-day life like a normal person, the way more experienced sensates can.
“Positive,” Janus says. He’s sitting crossed-legged beside Remus in his holding cell, where they’re waiting to be transported to the courtroom. Remus is pretty sure most lawyers shouldn’t turn up to court in pajamas, but considering that to the rest of the courtroom Remus is going to play at being his own lawyer, it’s all fine.
“All they have on you is proximity and threats,” Janus continues. “And considering the voice in your novels, along with the parts in your dust jackets’ where you literally threaten your readers, I can get that set aside no problem.”
Remus inhales heavily and exhales just as noisily.
“Right,” he says. “Right.”
Roman flickers into sight just long enough to shoot Remus a thumbs up, and as Janus resumes spitting legal jargon, Remus feels his shoulders relax.
PATTON
“Be careful with our bezzie Buzzy Bee!” Patton says brightly. He’s crouched before Sophie, having helped untangle the string. “Let’s make sure we don’t tangle him up again, eh?”
“I will, Mr. T!” Sophie shouts, already on the run with the toy, and Patton huffs ruefully. It’ll probably be tangled up again by the end of the day.
A brief chill across his skin, and Patton shivers before he refocuses on the sunny afternoon, here, in Auckland.
By the time he’s stood upright, Logan’s beside him, in a white lab coat.
“Do you really need that much air conditioning down there?” Patton says. “Seems a bit overkill, mate.”
Logan shrugs, closing a door, hiding away some kind of equipment that looks very finicky and complex. “I’m not the one in charge of the facility.”
“Fair enough,” Patton says. “I’m pretty sure I’ll be asked to join in on some kind of game, soon. You like rugby?”
“It’s not exactly popular in Poland.”
“Hm. Guess not,” Patton says. “Probably should’ve known that already.”
“The whole sharing knowledge aspect of this does seem to be rather dependent on a variety of factors,” Logan says thoughtfully. “I don’t think I automatically know the minutiae of New Zealand history and culture just because you might; I think we have to be doing something to trigger that sharing of knowledge.”
Patton huhs thoughtfully.
“If you didn’t know how to drive a car, for instance,” Logan theorizes, “and I did, and you sat behind a wheel and needed to drive somewhere, I would probably be able to impart that knowledge to you.”
“I can ask Emile,” Patton says, ready to turn and look in on Florida, but he’s stopped by Logan’s frustrated, “how do you do that?”
“Hm?” Patton says, turning to look at him.
“This seems to come so effortlessly to you,” Logan says. “You drop in and seem totally at ease, you could control if we all came to see Virgil a couple nights ago, and by the reactions of those around you, you don’t seem to be talking to thin air—”
“Well, we’re mostly, surrounded by five-year-olds, they wouldn’t be too phased by the concept of me having an imaginary friend,” Patton points out. Logan doesn’t seem particularly amused by this.
“I don’t know,” Patton admits. “Emile thought I was just very communicative, for a sensate. That might be it; I’ve always been pretty chatty. It also might be because Māori have beliefs about how we are all connected—people, nature, all living things—so maybe I was a little more prepared to accept that I was literally connected to other people because I grew up with that as a sacred ideal.”
They watch children run and play for a few minutes; Manaia, diving to catch a football in the game of rugby that had assembled; Sophie, racing between everyone with her Buzzy Bee clack-clack-clacking behind her; Oliver, shyly joining in on a game of hopscotch.
The grass sways in the light breeze, the sun had peeked out from behind its clouds, leaving the entire playground awash in light and warmth. The laughter of children carries on the wind. Patton’s coworkers occasionally look up from their tiny charges to smile and wish him a good day.
“It’s really rather nice here,” Logan says quietly. “I’ve never been remotely near this continent. Coming to research in Antarctica is the most travel I’ve ever really done.”
“Do you miss home?” Patton asks.
Logan considers this.
“Some things,” he says. “Kluski, makowiec, honey mead. Newspapers written in my native language. The coffee shop I studied in throughout all of university. Proper herbata góralska. My mentors. The ability to go to a grocery store. My mother.”
There’s a beat of silence.
“But I love the research I do here,” Logan says firmly. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to study down here.”
“It sure seems like it,” Patton says, his admiration clear in his voice.
“This whole situation threw a bit of a wrench in the works,” he says.
“I think it did for all of us,” Patton says. “Not all bad, though. Remus would probably still be on the run if he hadn’t connected with Janus.”
“No,” Logan muses, a soft flush touching his cheeks. “Certainly not all bad.”
Unbidden, images flash in his mind; black coffee, an expanse of wide sunny road, the sensation of dirt under his fingernails, purple jacaranda blossoms.
Patton tries his hardest not to grin. But—
“What,” Logan says defensively.
“Nothing,” Patton says, not hiding his smile, and Logan huffs irritably.
“You know,” Patton says, “Emile’s been dating someone in-cluster for, like, nine years? They were the first people that they saw, of the people in-cluster. In-cluster relationships are apparently pretty common, which I guess makes sense. Sharing feelings, knowledge, everything—it sure can bond two people together.”
Logan’s flush deepens.
“Just sayin’,” Patton offers cheerfully, and he goes off to join a game of hopscotch, leaving Logan with his thoughts.
JANUS
The language is different. The procedure is different. The situation is, most definitely, different.
He’s used to English, English law, English crimes. He’s been a barrister for years, jumping from one firm to another because the latter had seen partner potential in him; it paid much better, too, which certainly hadn’t been a negative. Janus had become a well-polished lawyer, a viper in the courtroom, a boomslang to his rivals.
He’s good at it, is his point. He’s always been good at it.
He stands, surveying the judge. A different uniform, but a similar dime-a-dozen judge. He’s seen this type dozens of times. He could debate them in his sleep.
But as he looks to the side—Remus sitting, Roman beside him, the rest of the cluster in a line past them, just peeks of their profiles past the twins—he remembers why he started to study law, too.
Because he wanted to be able to get himself and his brother out of any and every sticky situation they could ever stumble into.
Janus stands when he is bid to. He takes the oath, Remus’s mother language tripping off his tongue like it’s his own. It is now, Janus supposes.
Roman reaches over and grips Remus’s hand. Remus pinches Roman as hard as he possibly can, but Roman doesn’t flinch.
Janus begins smoothly, “Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the court...”

Part 4 - Peperiksaan
“Lift your hips, please”  The female technician asked kindly, her hand patting her knee in reassurance as she indicated the triangular wedge and large absorbent square pad.    “I’m just going to slip this under your pelvis.”
Kayo shifted her gaze back to the technician briefly before complying.  The tech was gentle, her hands though gloved were warm and caring and a light of understanding shone in her intelligent eyes.
“That’s right,  scooch down a bit, that’s it.. Perfect.  I know it’s not the most comfortable but this shouldn’t take long. Okay?” She smiled warmly at Kayo before moving down the end of the bed and pulling the metal bracing that was tucked in either side out.
“Sorry, these are cold.  With all the technology we have we still haven't come up with a better set up for these.. Sometimes the simplest things are the best.”  She reached down and tapped one of Kayo’s feet and with little resistance Kayo did as she was asked. Settling one and then the other into the stirrups.
Kayo looked up to the ceiling,  heat high on her cheeks as the unsettling feeling of being vulnerable and exposed crept in even though she was technically still covered.
The urge to sit up and bolt also made an appearance and she quickly checked the exits.  She didn’t like this.  She felt trapped and naked in the paper-like temporary hospital johnny they had supplied her and her flight or fight response was kicking into overdrive.
The observant technician  leaned over her and caught her eyes. “It’s okay.  This is standard procedure and you’ll be out of here before you know it.  I won’t start though until your husband is here, would that make you feel better?”
The woman’s lips turned up again,  laugh lines around her kindly mouth and eyes rising up with the action.  “I’ll just turn the lights down a bit to make you more comfortable, by the way, my name is Mariam and you’re in good hands. Doctor Coxley is a fantastic OB-Gyn. You couldn't ask for a better doctor.”
Just then the door just behind them opened and a nondescript orderly breezed into the room pushing an ultrasound trolley and right behind him was Virgil.  Gowned and gloved.
The orderly rolled the device up to Miriam and they had a conversation about programming upgrades that Kayo paid little attention to as Virgil came up the other side of the bed and took her hand.
He bent down and brushed a kiss over her brow, a question in his loving eyes.  Kayo just shook her head and he gave her hand a squeeze.
“Dad and Grandma are out in the waiting room,  Scott is off talking to our security detail.  Hubbert and his team are here.”  He told her by way of distraction.
“Good.” Was all she could manage.
Miriam finished setting up her equipment and plugging in the necessary information into the database.  Newly gloved and gowned she settled down onto a wheeled stool and cleared her throat.
“Okay, we are all set.”  She plucked a wand out of its cradle and slipped a clear plastic sheath over it before adding a lubricating gel.  Reaching around with her other hand, she adjusted Kayo’s covering and lay a hand on her shin.  “I’ll make this as quick as I can but you may feel some discomfort so try to relax. Part your knees a bit for me.”
Kayo squeezed Virgil’s hand and did as instructed.
“Good, that’s perfect. Now take a deep breath.  In one, two, three.. Out. One, two, three… that’s it.”
Kayo bit her lip and turned her head to Virgil at the cold, mechanical intrusion.  Even with modern day scanning equipment, internal aids were still needed to get clear, concise and detailed pictures.
Virgil skimmed her brow again,  nonsensical words of comfort slipping quietly from his lips as the technician went about her exam.
It hurt. God it hurt and Kayo couldn’t stop a tear from escaping.
Virgil brushed it away as if it was never there and she tried to lose herself in the scent of him.  She winced as the wand shifted and nudged deeper.
“Sorry, dear.” Miriam’s voice drifted over, slightly distracted. “You’re doing great. I’m almost done..Here, this might help distract you.”
The briefest of keystrokes and a rapid whump-whoosh, whump-whoosh of sound started to emit for the speakers.
Kayo sucked in a breath and Virgil’s hand tightened around hers.
“That’s a good heart beat. Little one doesn’t seem put off in the slightest of my unscheduled visit. Oh feisty one. Just gave me a kick. You got a fighter in there.”
Virgil grinned,  eyes watery as he looked down at Kayo.  “Just like Mom.”
Kayo smiled back but winced again as Miriam moved the wand around.
“I just need to take a few more measurements and pictures and I will be all done, this one is most likely going to hurt so take a deep breath.” She warned and waited for Kayo to comply.
Kayo stiffened, her nails digging into Virgil’s hand as pain shot through her pelvis and another tear slid down her cheek.
“Almost done… just a little further…”
Kayo grit her teeth and the stat monitor that she was hooked up to beeped in protest.
“There,  got it.”  The tech said,  gently slipping the wand out and quickly disposing of the plastic covering in the biohazard bin.
She turned back to Kayo,  towel in hand,  rolled it and settled it between her legs.
“All done,” She informed, turning back to the monitor.  “Bleeding has increased a bit but I had to be thorough. Make yourself comfortable and rest here for a bit while.  Doctor Coxley will be in shortly to discuss the findings.   Deep breath, Dear.. its done.”
Kayo gave a single nod and Miriam left the pair in the dim lighting of the exam room.
The OB-Gyn looked up from his electronic chart at the pair and smiled warmly.
“From what I can see of the ultrasound, the baby's fine. The placenta is intact, no abruption.  You have mild placenta previa though that I want to keep an eye on.  It’s common to have it in the first few months of pregnancy  but looking back through your chart this is the first that we’ve seen of it.
“Have you had any blurred vision or headaches?” He asked, taking Kayo’s wrist and glancing down at his watch.
She gave a shrug and with trepidation supplied.  “A little here and there.”
Virgil’s instantly stilled.  “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Kayo looked away. “I didn’t think anything of it ..”
“Kayo…”
“I was going to bring it up at our next prenatal and I didn’t want to worry you. You have enough on your plate..
Before Virgil could say more the Doctor hmm’ed and let go of her hand.  “You’re BP is elevated. Have you been getting adequate rest?  Not overworking yourself?”
“Yes”
“No.”  Virgil supplied frowning at Kayo with disapproval.  There would be words later.
The Doc hummed again.  “Well,  for the most part everything looks good, you just need to start taking things easier and get your blood pressure back to baseline.  Preeclampsia is a sure fire result if you don’t.”
“The bleeding is that from…?”
“The placenta previa aggravated by a small vaginal tear.”  He replied with a raised eyebrow that had Virgil cursing. “The amount of bleeding can be attributed to that and the pregnancy in general.  There are a lot of things going on down there. The tear will heal up on its own but you two have to take it easy for a bit.  At least two weeks of no activity of any kind.”
I want you to put your feet up and rest, young lady.  No work,  no play. Just veg out and let this strapping husband of yours do all the work.
The chances are even with rest, the bleeding will continue so we need to be careful as you get closer to your due date.  I want to see you in a couple weeks time to check things out again and see how you’re progressing.
Also until then.. No flying.  I will make arrangements to come to you.  Keeping your feet turf side is the best course of action right now..excluding the trip home. If I see an improvement when next we meet we will see about modified activities. Both work related and other.”
They both nodded in understanding.
“Good. If you have any questions, concerns or if anything changes let me know.  My line is always open to you both.”  Setting the chart back in the cradle, the Doc gave another warm smile.   “Everything will be just fine.  Relax and enjoy this time because before you know if your lives are going to be flipped on their heads.”
“Thanks, Doctor Coxley.  We really appreciate you coming in on your night off.”
Doctor Coxley, held up his hand.  “It’s no bother at all.  You and your family do enough for the world at large, it's only right of me to return the favour.
I’ll start the discharge paper but take your time.  There is no rush.”  He pointed to the room’s only other door. “ Just through that door is a small ensuite bathroom, fully supplied with whatever you might need.”
Doctor Coxley looked to Virgil, “ Just keep an eye out for dizziness.”
He settled his stethoscope back around his neck and he pushed up from his wheeled stool.  “One more thing,  I just need your verbal consent to discuss treatment options and follow up with Doctor Tracy.  Are you fine with that?”
Virgil helped Kayo swing her leg off the side of the bed, his hands gentle but his posture stiff and radiating barely contained disquiet.  Kayo said nothing, just nodded her head.
“Great. Take care and call me anytime” And the Doctor slipped from the room..

How to Groom Your Dog Creatively
When it comes to grooming your dog creatively, the possibilities are endless! Here are some tips to help you unleash your inner artist and give your pup a stylish makeover. First, start by understanding your dog's unique characteristics. Consider their breed, coat type, and overall personality. This will help you choose a grooming style that suits them best. Next, gather the necessary tools such as clippers, scissors, combs, and brushes. Investing in high-quality grooming equipment is essential for achieving professional-looking results. Before diving into any intricate designs or patterns, make sure your dog is comfortable with being groomed. Gradually introduce them to the process from an early age using positive reinforcement techniques. This will create a positive association with grooming sessions. Now it's time to get creative! Experiment with different haircuts and styles that reflect your dog's individuality. From Mohawks to lion manes or even dyeing their fur in vibrant colours - let your imagination run wild! Don't forget about accessorizing! Add bows, bandanas, or even tiny hats for that extra touch of flair. Just ensure these accessories are safe and comfortable for your furry friend. Regular maintenance is key to keeping up with any creative design you've given your dog. Brush their coat daily and schedule regular trips to the groomer for trims or touch-ups when needed. Remember: creativity knows no boundaries when it comes to pampering our four-legged companions! So go ahead – have fun exploring new styles and trends while keeping in mind what makes your pup truly unique.
Ideas for Creative Dog Grooming
When it comes to grooming your furry friend, why settle for the ordinary when you can unleash your creativity and give them a trendy makeover? Here are some unique ideas that will make your dog stand out from the pack! 1. Paw-dicure: Add a pop of colour to your pup's paws by painting their nails with pet-safe polish. Choose vibrant hues or go for a fun pattern like polka dots or stripes. Just remember to use non-toxic products specially formulated for dogs. 2. Hair Art: Get artistic with your dog's fur by giving them a stylish haircut. Opt for funky patterns like hearts, stars, or even their favourite cartoon character! Don't forget to consult with a professional dog groomer who specializes in creative cuts. 3. Temporary Tattoos: Yes, you read it right! Use safe and temporary pet-friendly tattoos to accessorize your canine companion. From paw prints to cute designs, these tattoos are easy to apply and remove without causing any harm. 4. Fancy Accessories: Elevate your dog's style game with fashionable accessories such as bandanas, bow ties, or even hats! Coordinate their attire with yours and let them steal the show wherever you go. 5. Creative Coloring: If you're feeling bold, consider adding temporary hair dye to create eye-catching accents on your pup's coat. It's important to use dyes specifically made for animals and follow all safety precautions. Remember that while creative grooming is fun, always prioritize the well-being and comfort of your four-legged friend above all else! Regular brushing and proper hygiene remain essential aspects of maintaining their health alongside any styling adventures you embark on together.
Dog Boarding vs. Pet Sitting: Which Option Is Right for Your Pup?
Tumblr media
When it comes to finding the right care for your furry friend while you're away, there are a few options to consider. Two popular choices are dog boarding and pet sitting. Each has its own set of benefits and considerations, so it's important to weigh them carefully before making a decision. Dog boarding in Auckland can be a great option for dogs who enjoy socializing and being around other pups. It provides them with an opportunity to interact with new friends in a safe and supervised environment. Many boarding facilities offer spacious play areas, comfortable sleeping quarters, and even grooming services. On the other hand, pet sitting offers the advantage of keeping your pup in their familiar surroundings – their own home. This can be especially beneficial for dogs who may experience anxiety or stress when placed in unfamiliar environments. Additionally, having someone come into your home can provide added security by giving the appearance that someone is present. The decision between dog boarding and pet sitting depends on your dog's individual needs and preferences. Consider factors such as their temperament, level of socialization, health condition, and any specific requirements they may have. Remember that regardless of which option you choose, it's essential to do thorough research beforehand. Read reviews or ask for recommendations from fellow pet parents to ensure you find a reliable caregiver who will provide quality care for your beloved pup while you're away!
Preparing Your Dog for a Successful Boarding Experience
Before you drop off your furry friend at the boarding facility, it's important to take some steps to ensure they have a successful stay. Dogs can feel anxious or stressed when separated from their owners, so it's crucial to prepare them mentally and physically. Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations required by the boarding facility. This not only protects your pup but also ensures the health and safety of other dogs in the facility. Next, familiarize your dog with their crate or kennel space. Gradually introduce them to spending short periods of time in there leading up to their stay. This will help them become comfortable and reduce any separation anxiety they may experience. Additionally, provide the boarding facility with detailed information about your dog's daily routine, including feeding schedule, exercise needs, and any specific instructions or medications. This will help staff members replicate their normal routine as closely as possible. Consider bringing along some items that smell like home - perhaps a blanket or toy that has familiar scents on it. These comforting smells can help ease any stress your pup might be feeling during their stay. By taking these simple steps before dropping off your furry companion at a boarding facility, you'll be setting them up for success and ensuring they have a positive experience while you're away!
The Dog Daycare Dilemma: Full Day vs. Half Day – Which Is Best?
When it comes to choosing the best dog care option for your furry friend, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Whether you opt for creative grooming, boarding, or daycare, it ultimately depends on your dog's needs and preferences. For some dogs, the art of creative grooming allows them to express their unique personality and style. From vibrant colours to intricate designs, this trend is a fantastic way to showcase your pup's individuality. Just remember to prioritize their comfort and safety during the process. When it comes to boarding options, both dog boarding and pet sitting have their advantages. Dog boarding provides a structured environment with around-the-clock care and socialization opportunities. On the other hand, pet sitting offers personalized attention in the familiar surroundings of your own home. We come to the dog daycare dilemma: full day vs. half day. This decision largely depends on factors such as your dog's energy level and temperament. A full day of daycare can provide ample exercise and stimulation for high-energy pups who thrive in social settings. However, if your pup prefers shorter bursts of activity or requires more rest time between play sessions, a half-day option might be better suited. Understanding your dog's specific needs is crucial when making these decisions regarding grooming techniques or care options like boarding or daycare. Each choice should prioritize their well-being while allowing them an opportunity for growth and happiness. So go ahead – get creative with grooming styles that will make heads turn! Consider what type of care setting suits your pup best – whether it’s full-time supervision at a boarding facility or individualized attention from a pet sitter at home – choose what aligns with their personality! Remember: every wagging tail deserves nothing but love and exceptional care!

Test Flight (Part 2/2)
Tumblr media
From here.
This one fought me tooth and nail. Three times I started this chapter and it shows.
But many thanks to @scribbles97 for the poke in the right direction and for listening to my whinging.
This fic was for @tinglingsquidsense with the prompt ‘Scott and Butterflies’. I think I probably should have just settled for him lying in a field of flowers and watching the insects doing their pollination thing, but eh, muse does what it likes. Hope you enjoy it anyway ::hugs::
Timeline: Season 2
Spoilers and warnings: Very minor season 3, a little angst and brother butt kicking.
This bit 1699 words. Prompt list can be found here.
-o-o-o-
The wind came up that evening. Not strong, but blustery, enough to cover the ocean in whitecaps and to rattle the palm trees.
Scott emerged from his mandatory confinement just as the sun was making its way towards the horizon. Walking across the comms room to his father’s desk, his whole body creaked.
Being slammed into his harness as Thunderbird Two snatched the pod from its fall hadn’t been fun. He rolled first one shoulder and then the other.
Virgil had been beside himself.
As he reached the desk, Scott placed one palm flat on its smooth surface. Touching it felt like he was connecting with Dad. Like if he stayed in contact with the wood long enough, he could absorb his father’s wisdom through the laminate.
Dad, what do I do?
It was a question he had asked the empty desk so many times.
Two had grappled the pod from the sky before it could hit the ocean and immediately flown back to the Island, gently depositing the crippled flyer on the runway.
His brother then set his ‘bird to a hover and rappelled down to check on Scott.
Virgil had been inconsolable.
He saw the whole incident as a personal failure. He had signed off a test flight that, in his words, could have gotten his brother killed.
Scott just shrugged it off and said it had been fun while it lasted.
The silent aghast in those brown eyes had shut him up pretty quickly. His brother then proceeded to scan him within an inch of his life in the infirmary and on finding the harness bruises had sent him to his room for the afternoon under threat of Grandma.
Scott had been of the mind to ignore Virgil, after all he wasn’t hurt that bad, but there had been something in his brother’s eyes. So, he had complied.
The room was eerily quiet except for the stiff breeze outside. A tap on the desk and his brothers’ locations sprang onto a holographic map. Gordon and Alan were holed up in the theatre and Scott remembered that it was Buddy and Ellie day. A frown and he considered checking up to make sure Alan wasn’t tied to a chair or something.
Brains was in his lab, Grandma was with Kayo in Auckland - they wouldn’t be back until tomorrow. John’s icon sat beside the display with its usual gold flare indicating his presence on Five.
That left Virgil, but really, he didn’t need a map to find his brother. He was exactly where Scott knew he would be.
A sigh and swipe of his hand killed the locator hologram. Edging around the desk he sat down heavily, leant his elbows on the desk and let his head fall into his hands.
His shoulders yelled at him, but he ignored them.
Dad, how do you console a brother who cares too much?
Virgil had been so excited about this new pod design. Brains had put together several ideas, but it was Virgil who chose which one to go ahead with. Scott had found him hovering over the specs for it several times during development. At one point, he had had to drag a dirt coated, exhausted brother away from a discussion with Brains about that exact subject. The man had been dead on his feet after three nasty rescues in a row, but had still found the energy to spout engineering terms all over the room.
The fact that he had then protested by throwing more of those engineering terms at Scott just proved how much he needed sleep.
Scott sighed. His brother was passionate.
Okay, Dad, damage control. He pushed himself up and out of the chair with a godawful creak.
Ouch.
-o-o-o-
As expected, Virgil was down in the hangars. But unexpectedly, he wasn’t working.
Scott frowned as he approached his brother from behind. The engineer was sitting on the hard concrete floor, elbows on knees, head in his hands in front of the remains of the crumpled red-winged flyer.
“Virgil, you okay?”
His brother startled and a pair of strained brown eyes turned to stare at him.
“Fine.” A grubby hand was pushed through Virgil’s hair. An aggravated exhale. “The pod’s a bust.”
“Hey, don’t let one failed test flight get you down. Find the problem, fix it and we can give it another go.”
“Did. Can’t.” Virgil unfolded from the floor and pushed himself to his feet. “The problem is a terminal one. This design is not going to work. And I should have seen it coming.”
Scott blinked. “What?”
His brother began picking up tools and packing them away. “The cahelium thread in the wings develops a charge as it moves through atmosphere.”
“Yes, even I know that.”
“Yeah, well, it couldn’t be discharged safely. Today’s incident fried every computer component in the pod.”
“What?”
His brother glanced at him before returning to tidying up around the wreck. “It’s not going to work, Scott. We’re back to the drawing board.” A clatter as a spanner was dropped. His brother bent to retrieve it.
“Are you sure?”
Virgil straightened and glared. “What? Did you miss the fact I almost got you killed?”
Scott sighed, but then... “Uh, yes, I did. Because I wasn’t in any danger.”
Brown eyes continued to glare at him.
So, he pushed his point. “You think you wouldn’t have caught me?”
“Of course, I could have missed!”
Scott’s snort was pure scoff. “Sure. Say you did. Say there was a micro-chance that your experienced hands slipped and missed and I did fall into the ocean. Gordon would have caught me. That is why we have a team for testing.”
“You shouldn’t have fallen at all! It was an obvious error and I missed it!” Virgil took a step forward. “It was a pathetic mistake!”
Scott stared at his brother. The man was furious, obviously with himself. “What about Brains?”
That made Virgil take a step back.
“You weren’t the only one on this project. What did Brains have to say about it?”
Virgil fell silent and his head dropped to star at his boots. “This isn’t about Brains. This is about me and my screw up.”
“You’re allowed to make mistakes! Dad-“
“Dad didn’t!” Virgil rounded on him. “Dad and Brains worked together on this project and look at all they achieved!” He flung out a hand to encompass the entire hangar. “I’m the only factor in this equation that has changed, Scott. I guess I’m not the chip off the old block I need to be!”
Scott stared at him. “You’re kidding.”
Virgil returned the stare. “What? You think you’re the only one who wants to follow in Dad’s footsteps? I may not be the pilot you are, but he was still my father. I just...wish...” But his shoulders dropped. “You know what, forget it. Forget the whole thing.” Virgil spun around and began to stalk away.
He honestly could not believe this. Scott straightened, projecting his voice. “You’re wrong, Virgil.” Every word reflected his absolute certainty. “You don’t take after Dad.” A swallow. “You’re stronger than that.”
That stopped his brother in his tracks. Virgil turned around to stare at him.
And Scott followed it through. “You take after Mom.”
-o-o-o-
His eldest brother never looked more like his father than he did in that moment. He resembled Jeff Tracy in look, stance and determination. Part of Virgil couldn’t help but react with defeat because he knew it wasn’t in him. He wasn’t Scott. He had at least thought he had his engineering, but apparently, he couldn’t make the grade there either.
But his mother?
He continued to stare at Scott.
His brother clenched and unclenched his fists. “Do you have any idea how much you look and act like Mom?”
Well, yeah, it was obvious...and part of the reason why he was so desperately looking for a piece of his father in him. He held up his hands. “Yeah, so?”
“Do you have any idea how I wish I had a trace of her in me? You look like her, you have her artistic talents...for goodness sake, Virgil, she was an engineer! I look to Dad because he is what I understand, what I’m made for. You? You are Mom.” An exhaled breath and Scott’s tone softened. “Have you ever considered why Dad achieved so much? He didn’t do it by himself. Mom wasn’t one for celebrity, she had her preferences and mostly kept herself behind the scenes...sound like someone we both know?” Scott looked down at his hands before looking back at Virgil, his voice quiet. “I will admit that I follow Dad and I have encouraged all of you to do the same. But Virg, don’t discount Mom’s strength. It’s the same as yours.”
Virgil was still staring. Scott had always been all about Dad. He rarely mentioned their mother. Virgil had assumed it was a symptom of grief and maybe it was, but...something glinted in the blue of Scott’s eyes. His brother managed to straighten even more.
“So, we still need a Mars pod.” He raised an eyebrow. “What does my Field Engineer want to do?”
Virgil couldn’t help but straighten in response. He had always been so proud of his older brother. Had always looked up to him, followed him around like a lost puppy at school. Where Dad was Scott’s hero, Scott had become Virgil’s.
And if Dad was Scott’s hero, then Virgil must be more like Dad.
But he was more like Mom. He remembered soft words, long dark hair and eyes like his own. Her piano which was now his and the help she gave him with his math homework.
Something small bloomed in his chest. He was a Tracy, but he was also a Taylor.
And Taylors were traditionally a stubborn bunch.
He caught his brother’s eyes. “We need a new design.”
“Well, if a butterfly didn’t work, pick another insect.” Scott shrugged. “How about something with a little more speed? Like a wasp or a bee?”
Typical. Virgil felt his shoulders relax just a little and an idea came to mind. Okay. “How about a dragonfly?”

#30 - “Music Box” - Mariah Carey
An unspoken rule I’ve made for myself in listening to these albums is to be an optimist, and to only discuss the traits I enjoy in these blurbs I write; I’ve already listened to plenty of music that I may not seek out again, but I still want to acknowledge artists’ abilities and any musical components that catch my ear, even something as simple as how creatively a cowbell is used. I say all this because Mariah Carey was the first artist I listened to on this journey that, prior to listening, I genuinely disliked; I’ve got nothing against her as a person, I just struggle to vibe with her sound in general. I had to really suck it up to listen to this album, let alone not be a pessimist about it! The good news is that I found plenty of positive things to share about it, but I wanted to indicate that for this listen in particular, I really had to push myself out of my comfort zone; then again, listening to an artist I am instinctively deterred by is oddly emblematic of what this whole venture is about, isn’t it? Alright, enough prefacing - here’s what I think!
I’d be stupid to not acknowledge Carey’s vocal range, I mean wow... she’s got some incredible chops to be belting like she does, and to hit those high notes that would alert any dog in a 5 mile radius! I could really dig some of the more fast-paced poppy hits on the album, such as “Now That I Know” and “Dreamlover”: I could also really appreciate the careful instrumentation of her slower, more intimate songs on the track; as an experienced drummer I still have trouble nailing down slow tempos, and I don’t think musicians that play like that get enough respect! What’s essential about this album is that it is an undeniably 90′s album, from the heartfelt and sappy ballads to the fun beats that make you wanna strut in denim through the city streets - exactly as it should be. I recommend this listen for a 90′s R&B/pop fix, and to feel like the hottest thing there and then walking through Times Square (or in my instance, walking down Queen Street in Auckland!)
