Charting the Course: Shaping a New Zealand's Literacy and Numeracy Strategy for 2024-2028
Dive into the evolution of New Zealand's Literacy and Numeracy Strategy for 2024-2028. Discover key considerations for developing an innovative, inclusive, and forward-thinking educational framework that builds on past successes
New Zealand’s Literacy and Numeracy Strategy With a change of government recently, I am hopeful that we may be able to embark on shaping a new Literacy, language and Numeracy (LLN) Implementation Strategy for 2024-2028. With this in mind, reflecting on New Zealand’s previous strategy from 2015-2019 is not just instructive but essential. Led by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), this…

New Zealand Prime Minister Guilty of False Advertising?
The Prime Minister invited 'entries' yesterday for his NZ small business scholarships programme - you can see my previous comments here.
So, today I was wondering how we define small business in New Zealand?
Well it appears 97.2 percent have less than 20 employees, so that may be a good place to start - right? Check out the pdf here for some stats and make up your own mind. I´ll wait while you have a read.
Okay - great. Now that  we have a definition of 'small business' in mind, let´s dig a bit deeper.
When we look at the people who won the NZ Business Scholarships, well a different story begins to develop. The people going on these scholarships do not come from small business at all , they are from 'big' business. Check out the list of 2013 winners here. You will be shocked!Â
Why taxpayers have to contribute to the efforts of someone from Tait Electronics is beyond me. Or the CEO of a large dairy exporter Miraka - heck, is he going to be short of a bob for an overseas trip? These people are from successful large companies and quite capable of paying their own way. So - what is going on?
Well, nothing is going on except that the government is falsely advertising this business scholarship as an incentive for small business to 'establish overseas contacts' Â etc yet, they are handing it out to big business. I suspect the companies in last years list all have existing relationships with NZ Trade and Enterprise and probably have a relationship with Mr Key too. Yes - this is a waste of taxpayers money and well, it is false advertising.
Kea New Zealand is the not for profit enterprise that is supposed to keep NZ connected globally. But, take a closer look and you will discover a board chocka block full of 'bankers' and investment advisors most probably hired (or verbally okayed) Â by Mr Key. Â Kea advertises itself as 'connecting New Zealanders globally' however, they say a lot, and do very little. Indeed they have now made their little club more exclusive by creating the 'world class' Kea club, by invitation only, which screams of cronyism. Again, on the surface it looks very rosy - but delve a bit deeper and it begins to smell very, very rotten.
So - my question is - what is being done for small business New Zealand? How does small business NZ connect globally to possible export markets - without losing their shirt. Short answer - they´ll have to go it alone.
Kea and the PM´s network is interested in 'big business' only.Â
On behalf of small business New Zealand I have lodged a complaint with the New Zealand Advertising Standards Authority and I would ask you to do the same.
Small business in New Zealand is tough enough without being hoodwinked by the Prime Minister of the country for goodness sakes. Here´s the link to the NZASA.
Let me know your thoughts and please take the time to lodge a complaint.Â
Small business in New Zealand will appreciate your efforts!

Education
Post by DANNY DE HEK New Zealand is generating worldwide recognition as a country that provides quality education to New Zealand and international students. New Zealand is generating worldwide recognition as a country that provides quality education to New Zealand and international students. From early childhood education through to polytechnic and university, New Zealand offers a professionally unique learning environment. Early Childhood New Zealand offers a wide range of early childhood services from private operators through to community groups and voluntary agencies, namely kindergartens, care centres and playcentres. The Ministry of Education and the Education Review Office (ERO) regularly monitor these. Primary & Secondary Schooling is compulsory in New Zealand for all children from their sixth until sixteenth birthday and schooling is free at state (government funded) schools until the age of 19. Parents are, however, expected to meet some minor costs, including the cost of school books, stationary and uniforms. Costs vary widely depending on individual school requirements. New Zealand Curriculum Most New Zealand students attend state-funded schools while private or independent schools receive only limited government funding. The New Zealand Curriculum is built around the acquisition of essential academic and practical skills. It identifies 7 academic or ‘essential learning’ areas and 8 practical or ‘essential skills’. #AdvisoryAdviceService #Assessment #AucklandInstituteOfTechnology #BusinessEnglish #CanterburyUniversity #ChristchurchPolytechnic #CitizenResident #CitizenshipNZ #Courses #EarlyChildhood #EmigratingNZ #EnglishLanguageSchool #EnglishSchool #EntryRequirements #governmentdepartment #GovtGovernmentImmigration #immigrate #ImmigrationAgents #ImmigrationLaw #ImmigrationService #InternalAffairs #LincolnUniversity #MasseyUniversity #NaturalizationNaturalisation #NewZealandCurriculumAndTertiary #NewZealandImmigraton #NzEducation #OfficialDocumentation #PermitVisas #Primary&Secondary #SchoolOfEnglish #SecondLanguage #SouthPacificAustralasia #UnitecInstituteOfTechnology #UniversityOfAuckland #UniversityOfOtago #UniversityOfWaikato #VictoriaUniversityOfWellington #VisitorInformation #WaikatoInstituteOfTechnology #WaikatoUniversity Read the full article

Schooling is compulsory in New Zealand for all children from their sixth until sixteenth birthday although most start on their fifth birthday or soon after. Schooling is free at state (government funded) schools until the age of 19, or 21 for special education students with disabilities. Parents are, however, expected to meet some minor costs, including the cost of school books, stationary and uniforms. Costs vary widely depending on individual school requirements. The school day usually begins about 9.00am and finishes about 3.00pm (the secondary school day ends around 3.30pm). There is generally a short break in the morning, about an hour for lunch and sometimes, a short afternoon break. Students are classified in year levels, beginning at ‘Year 1’ and moving up one class each year to the final ‘Year 13’. Years 1 to 3 are often referred to as ‘primers’ or ‘juniors’ and Years 4 to 6 as ‘standards’. Years 7 and 8 are known as ‘forms 1 and 2’ and Years 9 to 13 as ‘forms 3 to 7’. Class sizes are set by the school in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines. Some junior classes may include children of different ages and year levels in the same classroom; these are called ‘composite’ classes. Student’s 16 years and over may choose not to finish their secondary education and leave in Year 11 or 12. By contrast, students can also attend school until the end of the year in which they reach 19 years of age if they choose. #AdvisoryAdviceService #Assessment #AucklandInstituteOfTechnology #BusinessEnglish #CanterburyUniversity #ChristchurchPolytechnic #CitizenResident #CitizenshipNZ #Courses #EarlyChildhood #EmigratingNZ #EnglishLanguageSchool #EnglishSchool #EntryRequirements #governmentdepartment #GovtGovernmentImmigration #immigrate #ImmigrationAgents #ImmigrationLaw #ImmigrationService #InternalAffairs #LincolnUniversity #MasseyUniversity #NaturalizationNaturalisation #NewZealandCurriculumAndTertiary #NewZealandImmigraton #NzEducation #OfficialDocumentation #PermitVisas #Primary&Secondary #SchoolOfEnglish #SecondLanguage #SouthPacificAustralasia #UnitecInstituteOfTechnology #UniversityOfAuckland #UniversityOfOtago #UniversityOfWaikato #VictoriaUniversityOfWellington #VisitorInformation #WaikatoInstituteOfTechnology #WaikatoUniversity Read the full article

Tertiary Education
Post by DANNY DE HEK There is also numerous Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Private Training Establishments offering a wide range of professional courses. New Zealand has eight universities which all offer general undergraduate and graduate degrees and diplomas in arts, sciences and commerce, as well as specialist degrees in particular disciplines. There is also numerous Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Private Training Establishments offering a wide range of academic and professional courses. Universities Undergraduate degrees such as BA (Bachelor of Arts) or a BSc (Bachelor of Science) take 3 to 4 years to complete while vocational or professional training may take longer. Each university publishes an annual Calendar detailing the courses scheduled during the academic year and these are usually held in the reference section of most public libraries and can also be purchased from leading booksellers and university bookshops, and also specify fees and entry requirements. Term dates vary between universities. All university students must be able to speak English and some universities have a set level of competency. The entry requirements for university are either an A or B Bursary or Higher School Certificate with at least three C passes. It is also possible to gain entrance to university by getting a total of less than 12 in your top four Sixth Form Certificate subjects. These requirements are waived once you are over 21 years of age. Admittance to some courses is keenly competitive and in these cases, only those students with strong academic records are enrolled. #AdvisoryAdviceService #Assessment #AucklandInstituteOfTechnology #BusinessEnglish #CanterburyUniversity #ChristchurchPolytechnic #CitizenResident #CitizenshipNZ #Courses #EarlyChildhood #EmigratingNZ #EnglishLanguageSchool #EnglishSchool #EntryRequirements #governmentdepartment #GovtGovernmentImmigration #immigrate #ImmigrationAgents #ImmigrationLaw #ImmigrationService #InternalAffairs #LincolnUniversity #MasseyUniversity #NaturalizationNaturalisation #NewZealandCurriculumAndTertiary #NewZealandImmigraton #NzEducation #OfficialDocumentation #PermitVisas #Primary&Secondary #SchoolOfEnglish #SecondLanguage #SouthPacificAustralasia #UnitecInstituteOfTechnology #UniversityOfAuckland #UniversityOfOtago #UniversityOfWaikato #VictoriaUniversityOfWellington #VisitorInformation #WaikatoInstituteOfTechnology #WaikatoUniversity Read the full article

The New Zealand education English language sector website - wow, that was a mouthful, writes a piece about 'process' which begins with a rather large spelling error.
How can that happen?
Hasn´t anyone else inside Education NZ read this page? Very odd and certainly makes me wonder if New Zealand education wrote the piece, or perhaps a self editing advertising agency. How can this be missed - it discredits the entire website for me.Â
Okay, I can make a mistake or two as well. But, I am not the government or an entire education system. Big difference.
