how does the whole jee system work? i see a lot of posts about it but idgi since i don't live in india and a levels are way to different from it (since its a board thingy)

so, the exam is for entrance in engineering/architecture courses in iits, nits, iiits and other govt. colleges

the exam has two levels, jee mains and jee advanced; now let's talk about both of them separately.

jee mains — it is conducted by nta or national testing agency or dumbass mfs, it is held in two shifts per day and across a few days, this year it occured on 5 days with 2 shift per day, the exam comprises of 11th and 12th grade pcm and you get a certain percentile as your result, i have explained what a percentile is here.

so basically, it comprises of 75 questions, 25 each subject, 20 mcqs and 5 numerical based questions, there are two attempts, one in january and one in april, after both exams are conducted, a cut off is released which decides whether you're eligible for sitting down for jee advanced and with higher percentiles you can also bag nits, iiits and other govt. colleges

jee advanced — this exam is solely to get into an iit, it is conducted by some iit every year, there is no designated marking scheme or type of questions, it depends, the marking is nastier than in mains (+4,-1) here it's (+3-1), though it differs section wise in the paper too.

it tests more than just what mains does, it is more in-depth, questions your core understanding. this is conducted only once a year, the exam is of 6 hours, divided into two intervals of 3 hours each. the results are in absolute numbers and if you clear the cutoff, voila! iit you go!

that's probably about it, there are more engineering entrance exams, some state specific, other for private colleges.
