Lapis’ voice was smooth and even, his words softly filling the room as he read aloud from ‘The Little Prince’. Arielle laid beside him, the familiar comfort of his presence a gentle balm. But even in that presumed peace, the memory of the fire lingered. For Lapis, the fire reinforced his desire to plant roots - to start a family, build a life he would protect with someone he loved. Reading the words of The Prince’s devotion to his rose, helped settle the weight of that desire more firmly in Lapis’ chest.

Arielle’s thoughts kept her from The Little Prince’s world though. The story stirred something in her too, just not in the way it had for Lapis. The fire had changed her, It had obliterated all her illusions of safety and permanency. While the idea of protection and belonging brought Lapis solace, for Arielle it only brought the feeling of suffocation. The thought of being tied to something or someone—felt like a cage. Arielle didn’t want a rose to guard; she wanted freedom, a life with no expectations.

Lapis meanwhile, continued to read, his voice a low hum, unaware of the gulf starting to form between them.

Arielle shifted her gaze to the ceiling. Her thoughts now a raging storm. She knew she should speak, put voice to her growing convictions but the words felt too big, too final, too painful. So, she stayed quiet, her presence still in the brightening room. It seemed like an eternity before Lapis finally drifted off to sleep. Arielle quickly slipped out of bed, desperate for some air - taking the weight of all things unsaid with her.
