St Kilda AFL player investigated for using homophobic slurs
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/st-kilda-afl-player-investigated-for-using-homophobic-slurs/
St Kilda AFL player investigated for using homophobic slurs
Tumblr media
The AFL is reportedly investigating St Kilda newcomer Lance Collard over multiple homophobic slurs he allegedly directed towards opponents during a match.
The 19-year-old forward (above), who was drafted by St Kilda last year, is the third AFL player accused of using homophobic language this season.
It’s alleged Lance directed homophobic abuse towards multiple Williamstown opponents when playing for St Kilda’s VFL affiliate Sandringham on Saturday.
“The league is aware of a matter from Saturday’s match between Williamstown and Sandringham. The AFL integrity unit are now investigating,” a VFL spokesperson said.
Lance has not been named as the player officially. However media outlets are reporting that it’s him. The player may cop a hefty suspension as a result.
In May, Gold Coast player Wil Powell received a five game suspension for directing a homophobic slur towards a Brisbane opponent.
Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson was suspended for three games a month earlier after hurling homophobic language toward a player.
North Melbourne coach (!) Alastair Clarkson received a $20,000 fine and a suspended two-game ban for a homophobic tirade towards two players.
Both Finlayson and Clarkson were also ordered to complete Pride in Sport training.
Ian Roberts says AFL needs more education
After the Finlayson incident, AFL general counsel Stephen Meade said “homophobia has no place in our game, nor in society”.
The AFL “wants all people in LGBTQI+ communities to feel safe playing or attending our games,” he said.
But Ian Roberts, the first-ever rugby league player to come out as gay, said the frequent incidents show the AFL has work to do.
“Education at a young age is the greatest sword and shield in dealing with stuff like this,” Ian told Nine newspapers in May.
“With grown men, the battle is over. Grassroots stuff is what’s important. The AFL and the major codes should invest in grassroots education if they really want to sort this out.
“That’s where it has to start – education, education, education.”
Ian Roberts said homophobic slurs have potentially “catastrophic” consequences and need to be called out.
“It’s bigger than the incident. There’ll be a kid in the suburbs in the regions who might not have heard a lot of stories recently, but they’ve definitely heard this one,” Ian said.
“If they’re struggling with their sexuality and identity, and they don’t understand what they’re going through, that validates all the fear they feel.”

4.   Challenges you faced (the nature of the work, working hours, organisation, motivation, tabling of ideas).
According to Johnson (2019), internships have their challenges along the way, but in the end, they still have not lost their significance.
AFL Trade Period is a busy time of year. At SEN they hosted AFL Trade Radio, which was a hectic couple weeks because of all the new updates coming in quickly on the shows, which meant you had to keep on your toes and quickly edit them and get them out. Deadline day of the trade period was undoubtedly the most fast paced, stressful and high-pressure day of my entire internship, because of the amount of news, rumours and official trades being talked about every minute which I had to get out within seconds of it being mentioned on air. Fortunately this was at the end of my internship, and I had enough experience, knowledge and confidence in myself to get it all out asap.
Another challenge I faced was piecing the angle of a topic being discussed on the air together. Due to time restrictions we had on both horizontal and vertical clips, I found it hard initially to bring the story together or find which parts of the show to clip and post for the public. But again after more time working there, I began to understand which were the most important parts of the story, and which parts to just cut. This became more of a challenge when faced with editing NRL clips from their Sydney shows, as I don’t have much rugby knowledge. But again after watching it a few times, I came to understand which parts were most important for the viewers to watch.
Lastly, the challenge of having to deal with camera angles. Every now and then the cameras in the studios wouldn’t be fully on the host or guest, which meant we had to change our approach to how we edit and post the clip. This was challenging from an editing point of view.
Location of the workplace is something I found to be a minor challenge. At the start I would train it in, then having to walk 20 minutes to get to SEN. At times I did drive, there were extremely limited car parks in the area which was a worry because parking fines were regularly being given, to which I was a victim of a couple of times.
Motivation was a struggle at times. As mentioned previously, my job was to only clip up content from their on air programs. I love my sport and hearing the experts express their opinion on topics, as well as video editing and progressing my skills. But there were times I lacked motivation, after getting a little bored of the game thing every shift. But I would just remind myself why I am there, and pushed through and got back on track.
