There is a hospital in Brazil that will blind you the moment you set foot in it.
Not literally, of course -- after all, that would be contrary to the whole purpose of a hospital, no? -- but by dazzling your eyes with starlight.
Princess Juliana Ximenes Branco of the Tabajara tribe started the hospital when she received an omen from the gods.
Her father was the grandson of an escaped Nazi war criminal.  He used family connections to accumulate vast wealth that he used to assuage his family guilt by spending it on charitable projects for the native tribes of Brazil.
On once such project his met Juliana’s mother and one thing led to another and that’s how Juliana.
While she lacked her father’s sense of guilt over her great-grandfather’s crimes, she did grasp the virtue of using one’s wealth and power to improve the lives of those less fortunate.
While the Tabajara possess no noble class, Juliana quickly became the tribe’s unofficial princess.
Unofficial in name on; where things really mattered, she could rule by divine right if she so chose.
It stood as a credit to her character that she chose not to.
She received the omen one evening while looking across the vast Amazon.  The night felt preternaturally quiet and still -- no insects or birds or predators could be heard.
Looking across the water, she noticed how the ripples seemed to magnify and multiple the reflection of the vast stretch of stars above her.
She already planned to build a hospital, the omen showed her how to do it.
Consulting with the finest electrical engineers in Brazil, she built a hospital where the ceilings / walls / floors were permeated with millions of fiber optic cable and powered by LEDs to create the sensation of floating through the heart of the Milky Way.

The light provided bright illumination around all parts of the hospital, leaving nothing in shadow.  This facilitated the diagnosis and treatment of rare jungle diseases -- and Lord knows Brazil possesses more than enough of those!
The Starlight Hospital remains one of the most successful hospitals for native tribes in Brazil, but its doors never open to non-native patients.
Princess Juliana recognizes that in order to best serve the Tabajara, she must never avail herself of the miracle she delivered unto them.
She is dying now, slowly from stomach cancer, yet she refuses all treatment.
“May it end with me and this hospital,” she says, thinking back on the horrors her great-grandfather perpetrated.

This is WAAAYYY bigger than Russia. Even Russia’s nuclear arsenal is not the biggest concern, here (although it is certainly not negligible).
Russia led by Putin has nullified international treaties they signed, committed massive amount of war crimes, violated human rights systematically, kidnapped children, shot down a passenger plane with international passengers, caused grain prices to rise so that Third World countries are at the brink of a famine, toyed with blowing up more than one nuclear plant, flooded a valley with people living in it, caused unnecessary death of civilians and military personel and vast material distruction. All in hopes of material gain and for hunger of power. Putin’s goverment has bet the farm to commit genocide in Ukraine. Putin has tried to utilize international energy trade as a weapon, and his minions have threatened the international community with attacks on information cables in the seabed and rattled the nuclear sabre.
Everyone, NOT JUST PUTIN, are waiting to know, whether such transgressions are punishable? Everyone. Jury is stil out. Does the international community stand in support of the values they have declared to protect? Or are they just big words that vanish, when push comes to shove? Putin clearly objects to such international values and has very deliberately violated against them all to make a point.
If he is driven out of Ukraine and Russia needs to oust him and show remorse of what they have done, international treaties such as Declaration of Human rights and the Geneva Convention will grow stronger. Everyone will see that violating international agreements will bring no benefit and a clear, physical punishment from the international community. Even for a dictator of mighty Russia. Even to the richest man of the World. No-one is bigger than all the people in the world. No-one will dare challenge them all at once. If the people of the World choose to cooperate. IF.
If Putin, after doing all of this that he has done, “saves face”, it is the end of the international community as a whole. Then it is (again) a free-for-all every-man-for-himself -scenario. The one with the nukes gets to do what he wants. So, everyone will get themselves a nuke or two. Everyone allies with the biggest and strongest, not the one who they like, not the one who will keep the world safe. Everyone just allies with the guy with the biggest guns.
Time for human rights, time for fair trade, time for international treaties on climate change and collaboration in the polar regions are over. Every little pesky country will try to get nukes and bigger powers - US, China, UK, Germany(!), India - are forced to shed their thin veil of peace.
Putin declared that sovereign countries between Russia and US should be divided into spheres of influence and lose their independence. They caused Finland to join NATO and Sweden has applied too! These are countries that previously believed in non-alliance and buffer zones between great military powers. Believed in assertive military power, defence without projection of power abroad. This is bad enough, it is a death of a dream. It is not like Finland thinks that US is this saint of a giant. We know full well they can - on a bad day - invade a country to rid them of weapons of mass destruction that do not exist. US sometimes disguised their bad behaviour quite poorly, but at least they tried to disguise it. Putin makes no real effort to even disguise his actions. He wants his approach to be out in the open, he wants this to be the way of the world from now on. He wants to return to imperialism - not just for Russia but for all of the world. He believes that in the chaos that ensues, Russia and his mafioso ways will find prosperity.
The World either wants that. Or we don’t.

Some copper cables can work with pollutants, but their presence in splices and connectors will cause a decrease or even failure in signal strength.
Electricians can wash copper cable contaminants with specially-formulated cleaning solutions. Some polar soils can be dissolved by sugared or salted water. Non-polar soils with oil, grease, and buffer gel will need special naphtha and hydrocarbon-based cleaning solutions. Optic Fiber Cables
Optic cables transmit both data and electricity between two devices. Unclean fiber optic cables will cause data transmission issues and cause many fiber link failures. Furthermore, contamination can also degrade the performance of optical connectors.
With specialized cleaning solvents, you can improve the performance of optic cables. You can use a dry wipe or swab to clean the contacts. The dry contact would attract contamination and remove it from the line. Isopropyl alcohol is a solution that can clean solvents, but only some of them. Sound waves created by vibration of an object causing the air to vibrate - energy is converted from muscular to auditory - causing human eardrum to vibrate. They are variations of pressure in a medium such as air. 
Indirect sound: produced by the direct sound bouncing off reflective surfaces. The further the source of the sound, the more reflected sound the mic picks up. Every reflective surface is different - marble, wood etc. (difference of speaking in a church vs a bedroom for example).
Reverberation: prolonging of sound by overlapping sound waves 
Gain is the first point of the signal and volume is the last one. 
Condenser mics are more sensitive than dynamic mics, they are more directional and reduce background noise. Not ideas for high-volume work as they are prone to distortion.

Phantom power: providing 48v via the audio cables. If using a dynamic mic, phantom power not required. Switch out 48v before inserting any mic to a single chain. 
The ‘coincident cross pair’ is the most basic stereo mic set up. Provides precise imagery and full mono compatibility. Diegetic, especially dialogue is usually mono and stereo is usually for non diegetic. Panning left and right in a stereo configuration recreates a ‘sound field’

Wildtracks are important for recording lines that don’t work on location, sound effects. Reduces the need for ADR and pholly. Always make time for this and for atmos/room tone that glues together scenes. 
Dialogue track: sync spoken sound recording
FX: non spoken sound
Good practice to record this separately - for example: put fabric on bottom of cup for when character sets it down while speaking then record wild track of them putting down a cup with no dialogue so you can manually put these together and have full control.

Advanced Mode:
When something doesn’t sound right, the levels at the front only help with basic mode. If you have more than 1 mic you should use advanced mode.
In advance mode, the input volume being recorded is changed with the dial on the side. The L and R is what you can hear through the headphones so this should be set at the start of the shooting period - it is controlled with the front dials
Press the front dial for whichever channel you need, choose what you wish you control l and turn it down with the side dial.
Always prioritise the boom as it’s better quality  - think of the lavs as backups. You can mute either channel to have better control of them separately.
Lav mic:
Lav mic has receiver and transmitter. Ensure they’re on the same channel - there are legal transmissions and frequencies and a bad one can interfere with the quality.
The best place for it is between nose and chest pointing sideways or down. Try hide it in their clothes but make sure clothes aren’t rubbing against it creating noise. This is why sound and production design need to work closely - fabric of clothes, jewellery clinking - all this needs to be taken into consideration 
You can secure lav mic to skin with surgical tape. If you sandwich it by connecting it to both an undershirt or skin and a jumper it’ll not move around. Always make a loop underneath the lav mic so if the actor moves tugs on the wire, the loop gets broken and the mic doesn’t rip off.
Boom:
Velcro straps to secure the wire around the pole and always lock your arms.
Whoever is booming doesn’t need headphones, just the mixer.
Avoid booming from below so you don’t pick up all the reverberations.

Sean Illing: The issue here is something you call “political hobbyism,” an approach to politics that has become dominant. Explain what that is.
Eitan Hersh: Political hobbyist is a catchall term for the person who spends a lot of time consuming news or signing online petitions or engaging online with people about this or that issue. They mistake this for actual politics, but it’s not because it doesn’t contribute to power-building.
Sean Illing: Why not?
Eitan Hersh: When you’re a hobbyist, you’re learning the wrong information and practicing the wrong skills. You are typically learning about big national news items, and oftentimes it’s just drama. So a hobbyist might learn all the details of the Mueller report and feel that’s important to know and will spend hours and hours on it.
But then if you asked him how he could get involved on some issues of importance in his local community or in his state, or where the pressure points are in his community to influence government, he has no idea. He’s just caught up in the national news cycle and he’s not actually improving anything.
The hobbyist is also learning the wrong political skills. Online politics is all about provocation and signaling outrage. But changing people’s minds, turning your vote into many votes, requires empathy and face-to-face engagement. Not only are you not doing this online or when watching cable news, you’re learning exactly the wrong skill set.
Sean Illing: Why are white, college-educated liberals most likely to engage in political hobbyism?
Eitan Hersh: There are a few reasons. College-educated white people are likely to be in a social setting where they feel it’s a civic duty to participate in politics and to stay informed. They might find learning political facts to be intellectually gratifying. At the same time, the status quo for white, college-educated Americans is pretty good. They have good jobs. They aren’t being conscripted into military service like past generations.
So as much as they might lament polarization or despise this or that politician, they aren’t willing to roll up their sleeves and build political power. It’s only if you don’t need more power than you already have that you could possibly conceive of politics as an at-home leisure activity.
No one is spending more time learning facts and consuming news than college-educated white men. But research on real engagement — volunteering for groups and campaigns — shows it’s overwhelmingly women and disproportionately blacks and Latinos who are doing the real work of politics. Comfort with the status quo among college-educated whites, especially men, seems like the most likely explanation.
As to why this is more of a liberal problem than a conservative one, right now the white college-educated population is much more Democratic than Republican. Of course, there’s plenty of hobbyism on both sides, but right now this group tends to lean Democratic.
Sean Illing: What do political hobbyists get out of this kind of superficial engagement with politics? Emotional satisfaction? Is it about signaling who we are to other people?
Eitan Hersh: It’s a shortcut to engagement. You get to feel connected to a sense of community and a sense of mission without doing any heavy lifting, which is partly why online engagement is emotion-driven. If you feel angry at something from your couch, you feel somehow connected to it, even if you haven’t done anything.
Sean Illing: You’re preaching boots-on-the-ground activism and face-to-face interaction, especially with people on the other side. What do you say to people who are cynical about the possibilities of persuasion, who feel like the chasm is so deep that it’s no longer possible to engage with political opponents?
Eitan Hersh: I guess I would say that they’re wrong. Most of the people you engage with in real life are not at all like the caricatures in your head or online. Most of the people you’ll encounter in your neighborhood or in a community group aren’t raving Alex Jones followers. In reality, most people simply aren’t that invested and don’t have deeply held positions, and they’re open to persuasion if you’re open to being kind to them.
Sean Illing: The right seems to understand power better than the left, or perhaps there’s something about the nature of conservatism that lends itself to the sort of politics you’re advocating.
Eitan Hersh: I think you’re onto something there. A bottom-up approach to political change that focuses on the local stuff or the local institutions, like churches or gun clubs, is just more common on the right. We used to think more about grassroots organizing focused on unions, for example, but unions have collapsed while churches have gotten disproportionately Republican.
Again, some of the key demographics of the left, like college-educated white people, don’t attend any religious services at the same rate of people on the right, and so there’s less community engagement. And some of the paramount issues for the left, like race or climate change, feel like non-local problems, and that itself is a deterrent.
Sean Illing: What’s your advice for people who want to get involved and help build political power?
Eitan Hersh: I think they get started by building a cell of friends to do it with them locally, and they should be thinking about how they can dedicate at least one night a week to this, or a certain number of hours. The mindset is not “How can I influence the next election?” The mindset has to be “I’m entitled to my own vote, but how many more can I influence?”
I profile lots of people in the book who are taking this kind of approach and accomplishing amazing things. They’re showing that if you can get 100 or 200 or 1,000 people to share your values and to cast a ballot or show up to an advocacy meeting, you really can make a huge difference.

With two linear polarization maintaining modes propagating at right angles to each other, a source laser’s output is transmitted in the case of a single-mode fiber.

There is uniformity in core material;
The cladding and core are perfectly concentric and round;
There is consistency in the fiber and source laser temperatures;

There would have been no coupling of power from one mode to the other and it is not at all possible along the fiber’s length. If a modulated signal is carried by a laser output then these two polarization maintaining splitter modes will carry the signal without any dispersion and no crosstalk.
There is no perfection in the manufactured glass materials and waveguides. There is the presence of sub-micron asymmetries and non-uniformities. If single-mode fibers are being cabled and placed in aerial or underground networks then they may experience lateral stress. In handholes, cabinets, closures, and other structures the cable can experience bends or even have coils of slack.
If it is not corrected then this polarization-mode dispersion can have limitations with the distance or the bandwidth of a fiber optic communication system.
