The Saint: The Man Who Liked Lions (5.8, ITC, 1966)
"As an enemy, Mr. Templar, I trust you'll prove an exciting opponent."
"I generally do."
#the saint#the man who liked lions#1966#itc#leslie charteris#harry w. junkin#douglas enefer#jeremy summers#roger moore#peter wyngarde#suzanne lloyd#michael wynne#jeremy young#michael forrest#ed bishop#peter elliott#nike arrighi#robert russell#steven scott#phyllis montefiore#we open on Simon at the colosseum musing on the gladiators of old‚ in a cold open that's disconcertingly similar to that of 1.2 The Latin#Touch; and sure enough‚ Simon has a comic taxi driver assistant‚ only sadly it isn't old friend Marco (Warren Mitchell presumably less#easily booked now that Alf Garnett was a running success). we do get Ed Bishop tho! alas he doesn't make it through the titles.. Suzanne#Lloyd makes her 4th Saint appearance in an impressively expensive looking episode that is nevertheless slightly unhinged#i do feel like‚ after a few fairly standard adventures‚ this fifth series has just rocketed into madness now; first Nessie‚ now a Roman#emperor wannabe (a delightfully OTT Peter Wyngarde‚ who rather improbably complains about the effeminate men of today.. ahem.. and has a#scene where he's massaged by a very muscular and mostly nude man.. someone on the production team was doing him favours..)#the set dressing and costuming for the roman party finále is all very impressive and surely left overs from another production (altho the#series certainly wasn't a cheap one to produce). i had wondered if they were leftovers from Cleopatra‚ which had originally shot in England#before relocating‚ but that would have been Pinewood not Elstree. regardless this is a handsome if silly episode

Grue Believer Celebration Shenanigans continues with this review of Countess Dracula (1971), selected by special guest host and Decades of Horror fan Gregory Crosby. In this episode, the Grue Crew tackles another Hammer film from the Seventies featuring the stunning and talented Ingrid Pitt in the title role. While the film has no fangs and has little to do with Dracula, it borrows heavily from the legends of Countess Bathory who is said to have bathed in the blood of virgins to restore her youth. Countess Dracula is far more serious and mature than many of Hammer’s offerings throughout the decade and is well worth a revisit. Check out the Grue-Crew discussion to discover why.
At the time of this writing, Countess Dracula is available to stream from Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV Channel, Shudder, AMC+, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from Synapse Films.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by guest host Dirk Rogers, will be Trog (1970). Directed by Freddie Francis; produced by Herman Cohen; written by Aben Kandel; starring Joan Crawford & Michael Gough; and with dinosaur scenes by Willis H. O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen? It’s gotta be great, right? Right?

Man in a Suitcase: Jigsaw Man (1.22, ITC, 1968)
"Look, I have to pay for all this luxury I live in here."
"Middle class morality. I've never done an honest day's work in my life."
"It shows, too."
#man in a suitcase#jigsaw man#itc#1968#classic tv#reed de rouen#stanley r. greenberg#charles frend#richard bradford#paul bertoya#michael sarne#maurice kaufmann#john bluthal#john collin#bridget armstrong#shivaun o'casey#nike arrighi#brenda lawrence#sigh. I'd forgotten this episode until i hit play and instantly remembered Why I'd forgotten it (wishful thinking). I've discussed before#in other tags on other shows‚ but ITC seemed to develop the idea‚ at least in their 60s best known work‚ that they always needed a comic#episode to offset the drama; The Saint did it multiple times‚ there are examples in pretty much every major ITC series of the era and they#almost always are among the weakest episodes. this is no different. a silly tale about a roving playboy and McGill's attempts to track him#down and make him a responsible member of society (until McGill too sees the joys of eat pray love or whatever Bertoya is espousing)#a ham fisted parody of the late 60s youth counter culture‚ with broadly drawn characters played in caricature. this was de Rouen's first#work on the series (he'd return as writer and actor on the superior 1.30) but the involvement of Greenberg as writer is kind of shocking;#he'd acted as script editor and essentially showrunner on the first half of the series‚ so to get it this wrong is kind of staggering. then#again‚ he'd left the series during the production break (he and Bradford did not get on at all) and may have contributed this script at a#point of disillusioned disinterest. Kaufmann is about the only actor to come out of this looking good‚ probably bc he's the only one to#play it straight. Sarne had been an actor turned pop star turned director and producer‚ and this was a rare return to acting for him.#he shouldn't have bothered; he's one of the worst aspects of what is probably the worst episode of the series. ymmv but thumbs down for me
