Residents of Greater Noida and GreNo West will receive Ganga water supply from this year. According to officials of Greater Noida Development Authority, the Ganga Jal project for the city will be completed by October this year, and supply will be initiated thereafter.
But promises are often broken.
The project was to be completed in 2013, but is still continuing. Though the authority is promising water by year-end, according to sources, only one-fourth of the work is complete.
This supply — when it begins — will replace extraction and consumption of groundwater for residents of Greater Noida.
However, looking at previous records, the claims of the authority seem to be rather far-fetched.
Greater Noida Authority had launched the scheme to supply Ganga water in the city about 10 years back. Land was acquired for the project in 2007, while work started in 2010. At the time, the project budget was Rs 300 crore. The authority loaned credit from National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB).
The project was to be completed in 2013, but that never happened. In April 2016, the authority set a new target of March 2018, but fearing non-completion, they set a final date for October 26, 2018.
Rajiv Tyagi, general manager of the project, said, “The work of laying the pipeline from NTPC to Dehra is under way. The construction of the 11-km pipeline will be completed in June this year, 26 per cent of the work is complete. The water treatment plant is being built in Palla village. Water will be carried by pipelines from Palla to Greater Noida.”
The work of the project has been delayed owing to protests from villagers, he added.
Under the project, 85 cusecs of water will be supplied to Greater Noida. Two to three lakh households will be supplied Ganga jal in the first phase. Authority officials said that Ganga water will not be mixed with groundwater. In the second phase, the rest of the households will be covered.
The question — is the authority to be believed? Will the residents get respite from the muddy groundwater any time soon?

NCRTC to begin Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Rapid Rail work from March 2018
Tumblr media
Ghaziabad: The officials of NCR Transport Corporation (NCRTC) on Friday held a meeting with the Ghaziabad Development Authority on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Rapid Rail Transit Corridor project and deliberated on its cost benefit analysis. The work on this 90-km corridor is expected to begin in March next year.
According to sources, six places have been earmarked in Ghaziabad district to develop stations under the transit-oriented development (TOD) within a radius of 1.5 km around each railway stations. “The six places which have been earmarked are Sahibabad, Ghaziabad city, Guldhar, Duhai, Muradnagar and Modinagar. The remaining eight stations will come up in Delhi and Meerut,” said GDA vice-chairperson Kanchan Verma. “The work on this section will begin in March 2018. The cost of the project has been pegged around Rs 32,000 crore, out of which UP goverment will have to shell out nearly Rs 4,500 crore in ten years. The completion year has been set for 2024,” said Verma.
“The NCRTC intends to recover the project cost through various means by 2054. Friday’s meeting was held to discuss these finer points,” said Verma. “Five heads have been identified through which the project cost will be recovered and these include stamp duty, external development charge (EDC), floor area ratio, purchasable floor area ratio and developing the 1.5 km radius into a commercial hub,” said Verma. “We have made available to them a 10-year data of stamp duty and FAR of the area in and around six proposed rapid rail stations,” added Verma.
The project, which will begin work from March next year, will reduce the travel time from Delhi to Meerut via Ghaziabad by an hour with rapid trains running at an average speed of 100-km/hr against a Metro train whose average speed is around 30-km/hr.
The project, conceived more than 10 years ago, is a segment of a larger plan to connect important towns in the NCR region with Delhi through a high speed-based commuter transit system.
NCRTC is a joint venture of the Union government, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and is executing the prioritized three RRTS corridors — Delhi-Alwar, Delhi-Meerut and Delhi-Panipat.
Eight such corridors have been identified under the Integrated Transportation Plan 2032 prepared by the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB).
The other RRTS corridors are — Delhi-Baraut, Delhi-Hapur, Delhi-Khurja, Delhi-Palwal and Delhi-Rohtak.

Rapid Metro | NCR Planning Board sanctions 25 projects for Haryana state
Tumblr media
New Delhi: The Centre has approved extension of Metro line from Faridabad to Ballabhgarh at a cost of Rs 580 crore, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said today.
He also added that the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) has sanctioned 25 infrastructure projects for Haryana related to urban transport and water supply with a loan assistance of Rs 1,552 crore.
An additional 15 projects costing Rs 504 crore will soon be sanctioned, he said.
Addressing a press conference here, Naidu said that the Government of India has recently sanctioned the metro extension from Escort Mujesar, Faridabad to Ballabhgarh with a length of 3.2 kilometres at a total cost of Rs 580 crores.
This extension which is targeted for commissioning by June 2018 would benefit the people of Ballabhgarh and other surrounding areas, he added.
He said that final detailed project report for the metro connection between Narela and Kundli with a length of 4.8 kms has been submitted recently by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to Haryana Government.
The cost of this extension is estimated to be Rs 1,120 crore, he said.
Naidu said that feasibility report of Express Metro Connectivity between Bata Chowk one of the stations on Badarpur-Escort Mujesar in Faridabad and Sector-45 proposed metro station in Gurugram with length of 31 kms has been submitted to the State Government by DMRC.
He said that the State government may consider one spur from Surajkund area to connect Metro Corridor of Phase IV between Badarpur and Mahipalpur.
Similarly, feasibility report for Metro connection between HUDA city centre and old Gurugram Railway station and further to sector 21, Dwarka via Palam Vihar with a length of 29 kms has been prepared and submitted recently by DMRC to State Government.
He said that the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is implementing Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS), a rail based high speed point to point connectivity with station at every five to ten kms.
He said that it is a transformational project which would reduce the travel time significantly.
He said that out of the three corridors to be implemented on priority, two are in Haryana that is 110 kms Delhi-Panipat and 180 kms Delhi-Gurugram-Rewari-Alwar.
All three corridors are interconnected and trains could move from one corridor to other seamlessly, he added.
He said that such high speed connectivity would result in increased widespread economic activity and overall sustainable development of the region.
A total investment of Rs 50,000 crore would be made for these two corridors, he added.
The Minister said that Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) has sanctioned eight schemes with a total loan amount of Rs 4,448 core in the State.
This includes four schemes for housing with a loan amount of Rs 922 crore and four schemes for urban infrastructure with a loan amount of Rs 3,526 crore.
