In a major reshuffle, Maharashtra’s ruling alliance, Mahayuti, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has dropped 11 key ministers from its new government, triggering protests and unrest among their supporters. The most notable fallout comes from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Ajit Pawar, which saw the removal of five prominent leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal, Dharmarao Baba Atram, Sanjay Bansode, Dilip Walse Patil, and Anil Patil. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena have also seen three of their own ministers excluded. Supporters of Chhagan Bhujbal, especially in Yeola, have been vocal in their opposition, with protests breaking out in the region. Another MLA, Vijay Shivtare from Purandar, expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment he received during the cabinet selection process. While he stated that he was not upset over not being given a ministerial position, he criticized the lack of communication and the way party workers were treated. Prakash Surve, another MLA from Magathane, highlighted the struggle he faced after shifting his loyalty to Shinde during the rebellion, and criticized the selection process that seemed to favor individuals with influential family backgrounds over seasoned party workers. Despite the growing protests, state BJP leaders, including Bawankule, have denied any disputes regarding the cabinet reshuffle, asserting that the allocation of portfolios will be finalized soon. Fadnavis has defended the reshuffle, stating that several ministers were dropped due to poor performance, and 25 new faces have been inducted into the cabinet. Among the new appointees are several high-profile leaders, including Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ganesh Naik, Pankaja Munde, and Ashish Shelar. Five days after 36 ministers were sworn-in, the allocation of portfolios of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi is expected to be announced on Friday, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Anil Deshmukh is likely to become the new home minister of Maharashtra.Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is expected to keep only one portfolio - General Administration Department - which is related to state administration.Deshmukh’s name emerged after Ajit Pawar chose not to take up the portfolio for the time being. The Maharashtra deputy chief minister is wary of the court’s objection to Pawar heading the department when the police are probing his role in the irrigation scam.The state’s anti-corruption bureau (ACB) recently gave Pawar a clean chit in the irrigation corruption cases, but it has not been ratified by the court yet. Pawar is also named as an accused in a complaint filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam.Ajit Pawar is likely to head the finance department, while Eknath Shinde is expected to get urban development department. Balasaheb Thorat is tipped to get revenue, Jayant Patil is likely to handle water resources (irrigation), Subhash Desai likely to get industries, Chhagan Bhujbal is likely to get food and civil supplies while Dilip Walse-Patil is likely to get excise portfolio. Since Patil and Walse-Patil were not keen on handling the department for a short period, it is likely to be given to Deshmukh, said a senior leader of the party.The differences over portfolio allocation between ruling coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress is said to have been resolved in a meeting that lasted more than four hours late on Thursday night.Congress minister Ashok Chavan, emerging out of the meeting, said that the Congress has sent their proposal for portfolio allocation to the Chief Minister and the decision has to be taken by him now. “Since it’s a three-party coalition government and it is impossible to accommodate all the leaders, we will see how all of them will be given some work in the new government,” he said.Portfolio allocations were delayed after the Congress, which has got 12 berths in the Uddhav Thackeray-led government, sought one more portfolio with a rural connect, which has not been accepted by the chief minister. Three days after the expansion of his council of ministers, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has been unable to allocate portfolios, although the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-Congress government allotted offices and residences to ministers on Thursday. The Congress has sought one more portfolio with a rural connect, which has not been accepted by Thackeray yet. Within Congress, there is a tussle for the revenue department between state Congress president Balasaheb Thorat and former chief minister Ashok Chavan. Other senior ministers too want influential departments.Meanwhile, Anil Deshmukh of the NCP is likely to be the new home minister of the state. Deshmukh’s name emerged after Ajit Pawar chose not to take up the portfolio for the time being. On Thursday, the Sena confirmed that there is disquiet among Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies. Most of the senior ministers of Congress were not in Mumbai, while the CM (Uddhav Thackeray) was also busy with the Maharashtra Police Raising Day event,” said Chavan on Thursday.Sharad Pawar, NCP chief, too refuted any discontent among the three parties over portfolios. “Nobody in the state’s ruling coalition is unhappy over portfolio allocation,” Pawar said.Congress is insisting on a portfolio that has a rural connect and is demanding either the agriculture department, rural development department (RDD) or cooperation department. Sena has got agriculture department, while NCP has the two departments — rural development and cooperation. Both parties are unwilling to let go of their departments.The Sena, in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana, said there was a tussle between Ashok Chavan and Balasaheb Thorat over the revenue portfolio.“There is smoke rising within the Congress over the portfolio distribution. Former chief minister Ashok Chavan is in the cabinet and he has to be given a respectable portfolio. The portfolio that could match his experience is revenue . But Congress’s Balasaheb Thorat currently has the portfolio.
