I have two theories as to why Ace has hidden his name: an ATAC one and a more likely in universe one.

The ATAC one is that Ace went by the name Joe Hardy while working as an agent. It meant a lot of criminals came to know him by that name and also a lot of intelligence operatives. When Ace left that life behind him, he started going by a nickname to help him separate the two parts of his life and also because it was safer for everyone for him to not publicise his name to random strangers as they might be enemies of ATAC.

My less ATAC theory is that Thom was a pretty famous cop around town and that he, being over protective, encouraged Ace to go by a nickname to protect him from bullying or from criminals who might decide to mess with him to get to his hero cop dad.

(I also have a fanfic idea where Ace’s real name accidentally became a beacon for a supernatural creature that came after him as a child and that Hannah Gruen did a ritual to make no one question his name just being Ace so the creature couldn’t find him (which still works kinda because Ryan in his state was the only one who really questioned it and a teenaged Ryan would have been from before the ritual was cast))

When Ryan says he doesn't know Ace’s last name, Ace looks kinda offended. Like, how can you not know my name, I am your son in law!

@nancydrew-mysterycrew storage closet is great but stealing from a show (Torchwood), there is an episode where two characters have to hide in one of the metal slots for the bodies in a morgue, one laying on top of the other... just saying that is an option too

I hate zombies so I hope this doesn't happen but it would be so cool if season 4 (manifesting) episode 1 is about the dead beginning to walk because of what little dark energy slipped out through the veil or something and Nancy is working on it while trying to avoid Ace who is kinda bored because all the bodies in the morgue staged a walk out protest too only for a new body to be delivered to the morgue which starts to move and Nancy shows up to save Ace and he ends up saving her too and they end up sharing a moment only for Nancy to push him away again
