Lael’s prevailing character trait is compassion. She is a bleeding heart who doesn’t want to staunch that wound. She has endured every evil that might harden her, and she has made the decision at every turn not to be hardened. Even El started to harden after 700 years. Some of the other Seven began sooner. You could say it’s inevitable. But though Lael has become wiser, shrewder, she has never become harder.

That’s why, even if some miracle aligned that led to her foreswearing Mys.tra, it wouldn’t change much for her. Not in terms of what she seeks and how she operates. She has always wanted a kinder world. She has always wanted peace and safety for all people. All Mys.tra’s influence has determined is that she tends to tackle matters from a magical perspective. But if Mys.tra was gone from her life, she wouldn’t stop working toward a better world.
