RECAP: THE 76TH GAMES
The tributes rose up into the middle of a grassy expanse that held the Cornucopia. The Arena was massive, especially compared to the haunted house from the most recent Quarter Quell. A lake and a castle dominated the landscape with a forest occupying the middle portion, leaving countless caves, nooks, and clearings that would soon house one of the most exciting Games in recent years.
The initial Bloodbath was unique in its onslaught of tributes turning on their partners: one of the smallest tributes, Fiona Pope of Two, killed her District Partner Apollo Brickman in a courageous act of self-defence. Shay Mattingly of Six swiftly took out her partner Ford as she escaped with a sleeve of throwing knives, and even the allies from District One, Vega Nero and Alex Brite, got into a frantic squabble over a broadsword. As pairs and trios of alliances fled the Cornucopia, six cannons fired to signal the beginning of a gruelling six day-long Games.
As the tributes settled into the Arena on the first night, the dangers had not yet been fully released, allowing the groups to settle in and explore. As the sun rose on the second morning, animals began to fill the Arena. Murderous Shetland ponies, cows with razor-sharp horns, and tiny Pine Martens that packed a ferocious bite joined mythical creatures like kelpies as they roamed the terrain. Two girl gangs began to form: one trio of gentle District Nine tribute Arista Baize, the little District Ten spitfire Kathryn Huntington, and tough-as-nails District Five tribute Vida Oldridge, and a pairing of Fiona Pope of Two and Shay Mattingly of Six.
Shay and Fiona teamed up to kill the pair from District Four, Cascade and Triton, in a nail-biting fight, while Kathryn proved that tiny truly could be mighty as she defeated Arion Barker of District Seven. Jules Churchill fought and killed Monty Byrd of Ten, as two lone wolves collided. A thunderstorm additionally crashed down on the tributes, soaking them all to the bone and forcing them to seek shelter throughout the Arena.
However, despite the stakes of the Games, love was in the air. Alex Brite of One snuck away from his ally, Vega, in order to rendezvous with Levi Jameson of Twelve, in a brief and whirlwind romance that took the Capitol by storm. Levi, who had paired up with his District Partner and best friend Kaliope Hilade, sent Alex back to his partner with the promise that both of them would remain alive to meet again the next day. Meanwhile, Panem watched with bated breath as fourteen year-old Hudson Stark pulled together traps and caught food, even sharing a squirrel with his District partner Vida.
On the third day of the Games, faeries emerged from the woodwork to challenge and annoy the tributes. They stole supplies, tied knots in hair and in shoelaces, and were surprisingly resilient for their size. As the day continued, Alex and Levi met up once again, while Kali and Vega ran into each other while searching for their lovesick partners. Unfortunately, by the time Kali and Vega agreed to work together, it was too late: Alex and Levi had been attacked by a kelpie mutt, and the girls killed the mutt before it could get a chance to kill them as well. District Eight’s Paige Mannan additionally fell victim to the mutts, in the form of a deadly wound from one of the razor-horned cattle.
Needing drama after a slow third day, the Gamemakers created an earthquake that shook the foundations of the castle, sending the main source of hiding in the Arena crumbling down. An assortment of tributes were inside the castle as it crumbled. The destruction put a fight between Arista Baize and Vida Oldridge on hold as the girls escaped just in time. Both Eight’s Zeek Degray and Seven’s Jules Churchill were caught in the castle, but after a gruelling eight hour ordeal of fighting her way out, only Jules escaped to tell the tale.
Elsewhere in the Arena, the new alliance of Vega and Kali attacked Fiona and Shay, and Shay sacrificed herself to give Fiona enough time to escape. Fiona ran off just as Kali delivered the killing blow to the girl from Six. Distraught with grief, Fiona ran into Kathryn Huntington, and the two ferocious little girls fought hard before Fiona ultimately killed Kathryn. Dayta Oberon was then caught in a snare, and while Arista Baize cut her down from the tree, it was too late: Dayta was ultimately wounded by a pony mutt, and Arista mercy killed her to ease the pain.
Capitol audiences continued to grow restless at the slow pace of the Games, and thus a feast was called. All water sources in the Arena grew toxic and distorted, and the only fresh water could be found at the Feast. Arista Baize attempted to escape the fight by hiding in the Cornucopia and running off with her bottle, but was attacked by Hudson of District Five, and killed the younger boy in the ensuing fight. As the feast grew bloodier, Vega Nero killed Vida Oldridge of Five, while Fiona Pope was overcome with anger and vengeance, and pinned Kali to the table with her knives before killing her. And in a heart-wrenching display of hubris, Vega Nero neglected her survival training and died on the beach after consuming toxic water.
With only three tributes left, the stakes raised. Only Arista of Nine, Fiona of Two, and Jules of Seven remained. As the Shetland ponies herded the girls together, Arista fell victim to their powerful and brutal hooves, collapsing in the grass and placing third. Fiona and Jules fought viciously, but in the end, Jules and her brass knuckles got the upper hand. Rigor mortis set in, and Fiona died on her feet just as she was going in for another try at her life. Jules was taken from the Arena, the “lone wolf” becoming the Victor of the Games.
Characterized by unlikely alliances, fierce female competitors, and bonds that reached far past District lines, the Seventy-Sixth Hunger Games was truly one to remember.

Biden Nominates Foul Creature As Papal Ambassador
Thanks to our token “devout” President Joe Biden, former Indiana Sen. and Planned Parenthood advocate Joe Donnelly could represent America’s Catholic faithful as the U.S. ambassador to the Roman Catholic pope. Self-proclaimed Roman Catholic Donnelly is about as faithful as Biden himself. That is to say, not at all.
Throughout his presidency, Biden has presented a mirage of faith to Catholic voters who expect America’s second Catholic president to have their interests in mind. He doesn’t — and Donnelly’s appointment confirms that.
Following Biden and the rest of his so-called Catholic cronies, Donnelly has switched sides in the fight against abortion. Although he was elected on a staunchly pro-life platform when a U.S. senator, Donnelly’s faith apparently doesn’t cover human life — at least, not politically.
In March 2010, Donnelly voted for taxpayer-funded abortion through Obamacare. In August 2015, the senator cast a pro-life vote by voting for Cloture On S. 1881, A Bill To Prohibit Federal Funding For Planned Parenthood. Just months later, “the last pro-life Democrat” decided millions of innocent lives weren’t worth political pressure, so he voted to allow the abortion provider to receive taxpayer funding.
“Planned Parenthood has not been found to be in violation of any federal laws,” the senator said at the time. “I am committed to ensuring women have access to quality health care, like cancer screenings and wellness visits, and that our health care providers are in compliance with federal law.”
In 2017, Donnelly voted against President Trump’s plan to deny states the ability to use federal Title X funds for abortion providers. In 2018, he voted against another amendment that would have stopped taxpayer funding from going to abortion corporations like Planned Parenthood, earning him the title “Deceptive Donnelly” from Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List.
“Pro-life Hoosiers cannot trust deceptive Joe Donnelly to stand up for unborn children. Senator Donnelly claims to be pro-life, but he has a history of betrayal on important pro-life votes, including today when he once again voted in support of sending taxpayer dollars to America’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood. His record is dramatically out of step with his constituents,” she said.
Despite Biden’s best attempts to undermine and disrespect the Vatican’s importance — and there have been many — no temporal power can diminish the church. Historically, the ambassadorship has been taken seriously and, for the most part, has been occupied by faithful Catholics.
Giovanni Sartori was the first American counsel to the Papal States. His appointment, made by Pope Pius VII, marked the first secular envoy in the early history of our nation. Unlike self-proclaimed Catholic politicians today, Sartori took his influence seriously.
In 1804, New Jersey, the ambassador’s home state, didn’t have a single Catholic church. So, Sartori and his wife offered their New Jersey “Rosy Hill” mansion for missionary priests to conduct the Holy Mass once a month.
In 1814, when the local Catholic worshippers numbered too many for his home, Sartori and his neighbor, Capt. John Hargous, bought a plot of land and constructed a small wooden church. St. John’s church became New Jersey’s first Catholic parish, and the parish remains to this day.
While the relationship has not endured without conflict, the Holy See — the official governing body of Vatican City — has maintained communication with the United States for centuries. During the Civil War, Pius IX encouraged bishops in the Union and Confederacy to make peace. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s personal representative to the Holy See Myron Charles Taylor successfully persuaded Pope Pius XII to speak out against Nazi Germany in the 1940s.
It shouldn’t be a novel idea for America to present an ambassador to the Vatican who firmly believes and upholds the dignity of the Catholic Church. Our “Catholic” president should know this.
The Holy See is the world’s oldest diplomatic entity. It doesn’t deserve a heretic as a representative. It’s hard enough for the Catholic Church to look upon Biden with charity after he’s made it easier for millions of Americans to defy important church teachings.
Why Biden thinks Donnelly, who can’t even decide if babies’ limbs should be ripped from them in the womb or not, is a fitting representative for the Catholic Church is beyond logic. But it’s not beyond surprise.
What else can we expect from a president who so blatantly blasphemes his own faith? During his time in office, Biden has used Catholicism as a political tool, signaling to lukewarm left-wingers that it’s OK for them to defy God for politics. Donnelly’s appointment is just another sacrilege.
Evil is real, and evil is present in Biden and the rest of the Catholic Democrats who promulgate anti-Christian sentiment and policies. The devil uses such “faithful” to make others faithless — and somewhere along the way, in the malaise of political ambition and woke culture, the devil infiltrated Catholic politicians to the point that they can’t even admit all human life is made in God’s image.
Pray for our leaders, and pray they can properly represent the millions of young souls who are now enjoying the peace of Heaven. Pray also that no more lives are sacrificed on the political altar by Catholic apostates who have abandoned the protection of human dignity.

The University of Alabama on Monday released the first numbers of on-campus COVID-19 test results that raised alarm bells internally.
A total of 531 confirmed cases between students, faculty and staff were reported on the Tuscaloosa campus since classes resumed Aug. 19, UA announced Monday evening. The dashboard did not include how many were tested Aug. 19 through Aug. 23 or the rate of positive tests.
The cumulative figure includes positive tests on UA System campuses identified through sentinel testing, point of care testing in campus health centers, and self-reported tests from private providers,” the dashboard reads. “Entry testing is not included in this calculation .”
The school previously announced re-entry testing for students yielded a less-than 1 percent positivity rate. The new dashboard put the positive test rate for reentry at 1.04 percent of the 29,938 tests. The new numbers do not include those 311 positive tests from reentry.
RELATED: Tuscaloosa bars shut down 2 weeks to slow COVID spread on Alabama campus
The news came six hours after the City of Tuscaloosa announced bars would be closed for the next two weeks and bar service at restaurants must cease. UA officials did not give specifics when asked about the situation at the 11 a.m. news conference announcing the new measures.
“Our challenge is not the students,” UA president Stuart Bell said Monday morning. “Our challenge is the virus and there’s a difference, folks. What we have to do is identify where does the virus thrive and where does the virus spread and how can we work together with our students, with our faculty and with our staff to make sure that we minimize those places, those incidents. It’s not student behavior, OK. It’s how do we have protocols so that we make it to where our students can be successful, and we can minimize the impact of the virus.”
RELATED:How Alabama students, bar owners react to shutdown order from city
And there’s multiple prongs to that from setting up isolation space to disciplining violations of COVID-19 mandates. Bell said he didn’t know exactly how many students have been penalized under new rules implemented this month.
“But I know a number of students are going through the student conduct process,” he said.
Isolation and quarantine spaces are not at capacity, said Dr. Ricky Friend, dean of the UA College of Community Health Sciences.
“But we are concerned that each day that goes by,” he said, “there might be more cases.”
The dashboard released Monday evening stated 19.78 percent of the isolation space was currently occupied.
Friend said they were working on getting additional space on top of the 450 beds already in place to isolate and quarantine students either exposed to the virus or have tested positive.
RELATED: Auburn University’s COVID-19 cases multiply by five
UA vice president for Student Life Myron Pope told student leaders last Friday they were on pace to fill those spaces within the next week and a half, according to audio of the meeting acquired by AL.com.
“A question we all want to know is are we at the breaking point?” Alabama president Stuart Bell said Monday. “What’s the lever that’s going to cause us to have to change it. Basically, I think it goes back to flattening this curve, so we are able to accommodate our current operations and make sure we are able to keep the students healthy. So, there really is no single answer. I don’t want to point you all to look at this graph or look at this data and know we can draw a line and say this is what we’re going to do because it’s a very dynamic situation — very dynamic over the weekend as we saw positive cases increasing to again, today, cause us to take more steps. We’re going to continue to do that.”

I surveyed over 500 women lawyers on email lists, Facebook, and Twitter, in order to compile this list of briefcases for women. The list includes a wide range of names, styles, colors, and interesting lesser-known brands, all of which can accommodate a laptop.
These are my three rules for a well-designed bag for lawyers:

Strap. Some bags don’t come with straps, which means you have to carry it in your hand. This is impractical and annoying. You often need both hands to grab something out of your bag, and you can’t do that if you have to carry the bag by the handle instead of over your shoulder. (Bonus points if the strap doesn’t dig into your shoulder, especially right over a bra strap.)
Functional. This obviously depends on what you need to carry. I tend to travel light and often the most I need to squeeze into a bag is a laptop and a one-inch folder (along with the usual woman stuff like makeup). Carefully considering how much room you need and what you will be carrying will make your briefcase more lovable in the long term. Another nice-to-have feature is a bag with feet that can stand on its own. It is nice to be able to set down your bag without worrying about it falling over.
Feels good and/or feminine. When I graduated from law school, I had a men’s Coach briefcase. I bought it because I loved the feel of the leather, it was highly functional, and it was well built. Back then, I wanted a bag that will help me blend in and having a bag that looked similar to the ones my male counterpart was carrying helped me feel more comfortable. As I matured and became more comfortable as a lawyer, I felt it was important to bring more of myself and my personality not only to what I what I wore, but to all aspects of my law practice. Having a bag that I felt comfortable carrying, with the right blend of femininity and function, became more important to me. I didn’t want to be a generic lawyer, and leaving behind the men’s Coach briefcase was one small step towards finding my footing.
The balance between professional, functional, and not too frumpy or too sexy makes it a challenge to find a briefcase or bag. The recommendations from the lawyers I surveyed were mostly a variation on the traditional briefcase or tote. There were also many suggestions for rolling bags, which are especially helpful if you have to carry a lot of weight and negotiate high heels at the same time.
Best Women’s Professional Bags Under $100
I was certainly not the only lawyer to leave behind the “masculine” bag and traded it in for a more feminine one. Here’s what Maureen Hodson, attorney at Hunsucker Goodstein said about her Kenneth Cole Hit a Triple bag:
Kenneth Cole Hit a Triple Tote – $49
For years I used a really ugly masculine bag and longed for something more feminine. I found it about a year ago, and though inexpensive, this has served me well.
Hodson recommended this bag not only because of how it looks but because of its function:
I like that it has dedicated space for both an ipad and laptop, with plenty of room for legal pads and a redwell or two. The external pockets are great for dropping my office keys into. The center compartment (which holds the laptop) unzips all the way, which is really nice for when you need to stack a bunch of stuff in there!
Another brand that falls into the feminine yet functional bag is from Solo. I included it because they have a large collection under $100. Here’s the Solo Jay:
Solo Jay – $58
Best Women’s Professional Bags for $100-$250
Another big factor in considering the bag is how it feels against the body. I love bags that hugs the body, like this Piel Hobo laptop bag:
Piel Hobo – $148
It has wider straps and hugs the shoulder and allows the bag to sit in between the arm and the side of the body. It also comes in 4 colors, which is always an added bonus.
Many of the women lawyers I interviewed chose men’s briefcases. It makes sense in many ways. They’re functional, there are lots of options, and it does the job — carrying your stuff from point A to point B with ease and comfort.
Of all the men’s bags recommendations, my favorite one was the Knomo Henderson bag:
Knomo Henderson – $250
Lisette Sell, attorney at Cooley LLP, said she chose this bag because it is “feminine and functional.” She “wanted a bag that was just the right size. Wanted more than just a laptop bag but didn’t want a large clunky bag. I am not very big/tall and didn’t want to have to haul around a bulky bag.”
Unlike all the other bags listed in this post, this Michael Kors Jet Set bag isn’t specifically for a laptop, although you can place a laptop in the middle compartment. Oftentimes, you’re limited to one or two colors when it comes to professional bags. The Jet Set bags comes in three sizes and dozens of colors and patterns:
Michael Kors Jet Set – $225
Professional Women’s Bags for $250 to $1,000
I received two recommendations for MZ Wallace bags. Both lawyers described their MZ as durable and functional:
MZ Wallace Metro Tote – $300
Jodi Swick, partner at Edison, McDowell & Hetherington llp said,
It will hold several folders of documents (or a binder), a laptop and a pair of shoes. It also has outside pockets for your phone, pens, etc. Mine has literally been around the world.
Tumi has one of the best collection of women’s briefcases, and there were multiple votes for Tumi bags, both for style and function. As Shoshana Chazan, attorney at Sodexo, Inc., puts it:
Tumi has some great options. I have an old one that, even after the dog used it as a chew toy at one point, still looks (and works) great.
Erin McDermit, attorney at Shuman Snyder said,
Tumi is all I have ever used. quality and simple/classic styles.
The Tumi Sinclair is just the right size, black, and goes with everything. Like most of the other Tumi bags, it is highly functional, with a large interior compartment that is great for bulky files:
Tumi Sinclair – $545
Professional Women’s Bags Over $1,000
There are obviously well-known luxury brands in the over-$1,000 club, like the classic Louis Vuitton Neverfull:
Louis Vuitton Neverfull – $2899
For your best Olivia Pope impression, bring the classic Prada Saffiano Lux Executive Tote to a settlement conference:
Prada Saffiano Tote – $1999
NOTE: As of this writing, the Prada Saffiano Tote is no longer available on Amazon, though you can still find it at Neiman Marcus or Prada.
Best Overall Professional Women’s Bag
If you have the budget, the absolutely best professional bag is made to order by master leather craftsman Myron Glaser.
Elizabeth A. Frohlich, partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, said:
I loooooove this work tote that I have used every day and for court for 8 years, and still get compliments. I am a BigLaw partner, so need something that can go formal, too. It is very expensive, but is a real workhorse, made of delicious leather. Mine is black with silver hardware. Myron Glaser at Glaser Designs will customize, too.
Glaser Designs Custom Totes – $1,000-$2,000+
