The thumb travel.
Phew! I’m exhausted. Of travelling across the world. Travelling long distances without moving; and navigating with a knack. Wait, I’m rephrasing.
I meant moving miles with our thumb. Sometimes, I really wonder if our fingers have travelled longer than our feet. It’s surprising how scrolling down my phone (for no reason whatsover) has almost become a muscle memory.
A few minutes ago, I’d picked up my phone to check the time, and guess what? I found myself drooling over some delicious street-food reel, and cooing over a viral baby video!! Sometimes, this digression bothers me. Sometimes, it doesn’t- though I’m aware of it.
The mind monkey in us sure as shooting knows to play with our time- our VaLuAbLe time. I do not deny that it is not entertaining, it’s just that we tend to overdo fun-scrolling at the cost of our other activities. I suppose we don’t mind sacrificing a mammoth slice of our time towards this, typically because time is free. Imagine, if there was a fare fixed for every scroll down our devices, our pockets would definitely go empty in no time!
Since you’ve scrolled down to read this sentence, I think we need a break from this.
A screencation would perhaps help. Some time away from this obsession of being glued to our devices for no reason at all.
I’ll probably take a break from the screen travel once I finish taking a virtual trip to the Maldives- which is currently the new Mumbai, some window-shopping in Myntra, followed by some tit-bit entertainment and meme-reading on Insta, Pinterest, Facebook, etc, etc, etc.
Well, my mind monkey is back to work. I guess, I also have to google and check how to tame it, before I take my screencation.

This Mumbai-based Startup Brings Together India’s Lab Suppliers on One Platform
Biomall is a B2B online e-commerce marketplace dedicated to laboratory, life science and diagnostic products. It is India’s first ecommerce website which offers researchers and lab users’ laboratory products directly online using a secured payment gateway. It was established in the year 2016 by Dr. S. Jhaveri, PhD Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Cornell University, USA.
Majority of scientific laboratories in India still follow the traditional system of inviting multiple quotations, followed by indenting, generation of purchase orders and payment to suppliers 30-90 days after delivery. A single purchase-sale cycle thus lasts for months. Even the rate contract system, wherein a vendor is chosen for a particular brand at the start of the financial year, is inefficient as the institute has to rely on a single vendor who might not have stocks readily available and cannot purchase from any other vendor who might have stocks for the required product. Typically a lab buys products from multiple brands so again they need to contact multiple vendors and a lot of time is invested in procuring day-to-day lab supplies. So while a lab in India would take months just to get their supplies; elsewhere laboratories in countries with more advanced purchasing systems would have already completed their project by the time supplies reach the scientists bench in India! This is a critical factor that needs to be addressed immediately else India will further lag behind in terms of innovations. Also, inefficiencies in systems lead to increased costs and so scientists spend not only more time but also more money to purchase lab products!
Through its online portal, Biomall.in is trying to bring a big change in this system, by incorporating easy and convenient online purchase system as against traditional credit based purchases. The advantage is that scientists can search, compare and buy multiple products from different brands in a single order with a “single click” directly from the suppliers. The user does not require to get multiple quotations since all price details are given online along with real-time product availability thereby saving valuable time.
Scientists have a limited research budget for a project and need to manage their purchases within the available funds. On Biomall, the suppliers have provided good discounts on many products including chemicals, regular lab consumables, chromatography columns, etc. This has been possible by:
1.     Connecting scientists directly with the manufacturers/authorized distributors
2.     Elimination of costly field sales representatives
3.     Timely payment to the suppliers and

Dr. S. Jhaveri is a PhD graduate and a successful entrepreneur based in Mumbai. He has done his Ph.D in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in the year 2007 and also done his bachelors in Chemical Technology specializing in Chemistry of Dyes and Intermediates from ICT, Mumbai (formerly UDCT). He has been awarded Dr. Sundar Aggarwal award for outstanding Indian Students entering Ph.D. program in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University.
In the year 2012 he started his distribution business for laboratory products under the company Chargen Life Sciences LLP. During the initial 3 years of distribution business, he studied the lab industry market deeply and analyzed the problems faced by laboratories. Based on this analysis and the growing consumer inclination towards e-Commerce, he found an online platform connecting buyers and sellers of lab products to be a perfect solution to tackle the current problems. Thus, in mid-2016, he launched India’s first online marketplace for laboratory products – Biomall.in.
Earlier he worked as an Independent consultant with Universal Consulting, where he carried out market research on impact of new technologies in the knee implant market in India, assessing market feasibility for a Point-of-Care Testing Device in India and UAE. He was a visiting student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Q.: Tell us about the Product / Solution. How did you get your first customer? Explain how you went about the Product-Market Fit Process. Ans: We have developed a customized online portal – www.biomall.in to buy and sell laboratory products worldwide. It hosts 100,000+ products from 150+ brands across 100+ categories – Lab Chemicals, Microbiology, Diagnostics, Chromatography, Genomics, Proteomics, Lab Equipments, Lab Consumables. Laboratory Professionals from life science / biotech companies, pharma companies, academics, hospitals can buy any product required in their laboratories from Biomall.in. We offer digital marketing services to promote the products of Indian manufacturers to laboratories involved in research, testing and diagnostics. In house technical team from science and IT background work together to strategize and execute digital promotion via e-commerce, email, social media, blog, whatsapp and other online media. We also offer services to setup labs from the basics – designing, furnishing and procurement of all kinds of equipments and reagents required in a lab.
When it was launched, we had a different sales model wherein buyers could submit enquiries and get online quotation. We developed the website content as per SEO, so as to get customers via google search. Our first online customer came from Pune, Maharashtra through google search and has been a regular customer till date. Majority of our customers are sourced organically from google even today.
Q.: What is your USP? Ans: The biggest USP is that we are an online platform dedicated only to laboratory, life science and diagnostic products. This separates us from several other marketplaces which sell all kind of products. We give a target customer base to all the sellers who can then use this platform as a good marketing tool as it caters specifically to the scientists, pathologists, medical, pharma & QC professionals.
Also, Biomall acts as a single platform to buy multiple types of lab products from multiple brands in a single order.
It provides the option to buy lab products directly online just by selecting quantity, add to cart and place order by making online payment. Buyers can request for a bulk discount if more than 10 packs are needed. Buyers can also post enquiry for products not found on the portal. This enquiry then gets shared to all registered sellers on the portal who can send an online quote to the buyers as per product availability.
The platform provides a seamless experience to the sellers for managing all orders, enquiries, stock and ongoing offers through their dashboard.
Q.: What were your assumptions when you entered the market, learning that you have? Who in your mind is your ideal customer? Do you have at least one of them signed up? Ans: We thought that considering the response received to online shopping sites like amazon, flipkart, snapdeal, myntra, etc., users in India shall be happy to know about Biomall and buy laboratory products online. Although, most of the scientists like the concept of Biomall, they get constrained by the purchase system followed in their institutes or companies. Nevertheless, we have received many customers from top research institutes like IITs, IISERs, CSIR institutes who prefer to buy chemicals, consumables and other products from our website. Also, many small companies have now begun to order their lab supplies online on Biomall.
An ideal customer for our website would be a scientist who is looking for any lab product, finds it online, compares among different brands, and buy the best suitable. We wish to be the ideal platform for all scientists by offering a complete portfolio of lab products, with detailed information provided on the website and the best delivery service so that they can get their product/s in a hassle free manner.
Q.: What has been your biggest failure as an entrepreneur and what did you learn from it?? Ans: Failures in the past have been about conceptualizing big projects before understanding ground reality

Paid membership is available based on the services required by sellers. Prices are decided based on the expense incurred in terms of website maintenance, customer service and marketing service.
Q.: Please tell us about the investors (if any) Ans: Biomall is bootstrapped company and all the investments have come from promoters family business and distribution business of Chargen Life Sciences. However, now we are looking for investors to scale up the business.
Q.: Is there any interesting success story of your startup? If yes, please write about it. ? Ans: We are extremely proud that we have managed to export Indian manufactured products to 35+ Countries via our platform and thus contributing to the Make in India initiative launched by the Government.
Q.: Since inception, give us a sense of the value of business done by your venture? Please explain in detail. (e.g., What is the current turnover? From Launching till date total no. of visitors on website/persons registered/enquiries and enrollment etc.) Ans: The website hosts 100,000+ lab products from 150+ brands across 100+ categories of laboratory, life science and diagnostic products. We have grown from as low as 50 visitors a day to 500 visitors a day. About 5000+ buyers and 500+ sellers are registered with us. Since 2016, we have served 300+ Indian cities and exported to 35+ countries including Middle East, Africa, Europe, USA, South America and Asian countries
Q.: What is the big picture of your startup? Is this Product/service leading to something bigger? If so, how? Ans: Through our online startup, we are trying to bring in the concept of digitalization in the laboratory industry, and also promoting the ‘Make in India’ campaign started by the GOI. Due to the long sales cycle Indian scientists suffer greatly as they do not get products on time. Edited Excerpts When we spoke in 2014, you said small town India - (Surat, Pune) - was emerging as a surprise market for Harley. How did that pan out over the last three years? I believe markets like Guwahati and Coimbatore are opening up... Last year was not as good as we expected. This was, in part, due to demonetisation, which did hit this segment. From a point of view of concentration of volume, the bread-and-butter for Harley is still the metros. It will always be. But the desire to own a Harley is very high in smaller towns. Markets like Ludhiana, Lucknow and Dehradun have opened up. We're responding to this desire by opening up dealerships in these locations. We're hoping markets like Kolhapur and Trivandrum will bring some excitement in the days ahead. In general, demand is very high in the North and West of the country. How has the Harley consumer evolved over the last three years? We see a pool of our customers now upgrading to bigger motorcycles. The trend is - within the Harley range, customers are upgrading faster. This is always a good sign, across markets. While we do have customers in the 25-26-years age group, from a quantum perspective, the 28-to-33-year-old is a relatively newer demographic for us - they are first-time big bike riders. The 35-55-year-old is now part of our more core audience. Women have started to come in more. We have close to 80 female riders across India, today (in 2014, there were 20). Last year, we formed a group called 'Ladies of Harley'. As marketing head, you are responsible for expanding the brand's user base. But in a segment for which demand is driven by passion, how does one go about generating interest where there is none? From a marketing standpoint our intent and strategy is to maintain a fine balance between bringing new customers into the fold and not ignoring our existing customers. We have a core customer and an outreach customer. We have been re-focusing our energy on our existing customers a lot more of late. More motorcycles on the road will bring in more customers. Also, when customers ride more, they walk into the dealership more, they want to upgrade/customise the motorcycle, they want a new jacket... this helps the dealer and consequently, the business.

With the launch of the Street 750 (2014), we opened the gates to so many riders, who would otherwise not think of riding a Harley. Street 750 is not the quintessential Harley; the sound and aesthetics of Harley are there, but it's for riders who'd otherwise ride a motorcycle from a competing brand. But now, they've come in. In India we are very influenced by family. So that's something we've brought into our marketing, through HOG. If your partner/spouse has a Harley, you can become an associate member and be part of our rallies. These programs are important for the future customer as well. The price point is something we've really focused on. The price has come down. With that, we've opened Harley-Davidson up to a lot more people. We want to create intent, demand and new riders. Does a price drop take away from the 'premium-ness' of the brand? Or is it a trade-off you're willing to make? We're a premium brand and will always be one. The cost of our entry level motorcycle, Street 750, is around Rs.5 lakh. Spending that much on a motorcycle is still a big deal. It is premium. You can get a car for that much. And we'll never bring the price down just to get more riders. We brought the price down to build a whole new segment of consumers. That's the strategy - thinking of pricing and new segments together. We're not an 'automotive brand'. Yes, there's an engine, two wheels, and there's a road. But when it comes to the way the brand is perceived by our customers, there's nothing 'auto' about it... Ray-Ban, for example, has dropped its prices a lot over the years but has not let go of its brand identity. How do you split your marketing spend across media channels? 80 per cent of our spend is for experiential (offline) marketing. 20 per cent is for conventional/traditional marketing. What is 'traditional marketing' for Harley? Focused print advertising - auto, lifestyle, fashion magazines. Digital is part of this 20 per cent. We have a tie-up with PowerDrift (YouTube channel about automobiles); the content is released on their platform as well as ours. The questions future customers have before investing in our product - 'This is a big motorcycle, how can I handle it?', 'What if it falls?', 'Will I hurt myself?', 'How do I brake?' - are answered through this content. This is another way of investing in the future customer, who, through this content feels, 'Yes, I can learn how to ride a motorcycle.' We do this through our Boot Camps too; here we tell potential customers about the brand and take them on a small ride, through which they can experience what it would feel like to be part of the Harley community. We don't just give them the keys and ask them to ride solo... we take them on a ride with a lead rider, a sweep rider... they feel the brotherhood right there. CMOs within a product segment have a sense of fraternity among themselves... and a reference point. Because you handle a premium brand like Harley, do you sometimes find yourself too far removed from the goings on in the marketing community? Which segments do you follow closely? (laughs) Yes... that's a great question. I read a lot about the fashion segment. It's similar to ours, in some ways. Also, at Harley, merchandise (which is sold on Myntra) is a big deal. Music is another segment I keep a close eye on; like fashion and riding, music is also about self expression and individualism. Harvard Business Review is my Bible. When going to market with a new variant, what's the biggest concern? Ensuring the communication that goes out to our customer base is done right and on time. If this communication is not right, we'll fall flat. And who sells our brand? Our dealer and distributor network does. So they have to be pumped up for a new product to work. Right, given the nature of the segment, a lot of the marketing is done at the dealership level. Does handing over the brand reins this frequently give you a sense of loss of control? Yes, it's a good question. Yes, the nature of the product is such that it has to be sold from the dealer network. We can't sell this product by giving spec-sheets and putting a banner... there's a huge amount of B2B marketing. I work closely with our partners and stakeholders. So my struggle is - engaging with them constantly. What is your biggest marketing challenge? Being part of the marketing team at Harley-Davidson is a huge responsibility. When someone buys our product, they have huge expectations. Keeping a customer engaged is a challenge. We have to ensure they feel as connected to the brand as they did when they first picked up the motorcycle. We try to do it with events and rides, but a lot of people will fall out in the middle. How do we ensure that if they ever want to come back to owning a motorcycle they come back to Harley-Davidson? That's the challenge high indulgence, experiential brands like ours face. Coronavirus: not a marketing hook
Recently, while cruising the world on my handheld from the comfort of my wingback, I was almost thrown right off it! I had just read that Patek Philippe, the holy grail of the watch world, would be selling online. In the larger scheme, I know the internet hasn’t been around too long. But for an industry (and certain brands) that has long outlived and survived the French revolution, two World Wars and an Economic Depression, the fact that the most coveted of manufactures in the field would be succumbing to the clime of the times and acquiescing to online sales is a sign of just how bad things are. For many watch collectors and even nifty businessfolk, if they weren’t taking the Covid-19 threat seriously earlier, this has come as the undeniable reckoner.
Buying a Patek is not an off-hand purchase that you do while pottering about on your phone in the middle of the night like, say, some rubbish fitness belt or a home massage kit. It is an occasion, one that is marked by many a praise that the store folk will shower on you for your fine taste (and fat wallet) and oft accompanied by a bottle of sparkler going pop somewhere in the background. To simply make a PayPal transaction to acquire such a celebrated timepiece, you’d have to be stinking rich and absolutely spartan at the same time.
A growing tide
But they aren’t the only ones. Rolex, people are now debating, might joint the fray. Hodinkee, the online portal and marketplace for luxury watches, is hiring people who may have lost jobs in the real space, providing online space for brands to sell their ware, as also putting the works of various writers in the spotlight, all in a bid to ‘keep things moving along’. Many other brands are already gearing up to reach their consumers in unprecedented ways. In the last month, two great international watch events got canned, the Olympics stands postponed, the fashion seasons have been derailed, even Apple and Google are debating when and how to launch their next models. The virus has certainly hit us where it hurts worst and in a manner that no-one predicted. Since no business or industry can afford to be blasé about the state of things, this is where brand building comes in. Even if it doesn’t have the ring of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, the indomitable human spirit will find ways to conjure up marketing in the time of Covid-19, because inasmuch as this pandemic is bad for sales and profits, in the long run, it is a great time to earn some brand cred through socially woke campaigns. The time, thus, is rife for creating equity through contributions to noble causes — from liquor brands manufacturing sanitisers (Diageo, Goa Brewing and Paul John are doing it) to cooking meals for the stranded (ITC hotels and Cafe Lota come to mind), from making online courses free or discounting them heavily (BarSmart, Fondation de Haute Horlogerie), to creating virtual classrooms for everything from guitar lessons to fitness sessions. Even a sector like travel is finding ways to connect. Portuguese tourism is pushing on with their #CantSkipHope campaign (to replace #CantSkipPortugal) and Maldives has #VisitMaldivesLater. Alcohol brands, notwithstanding the non-availability of their product, which does put a damper on everybody’s never-ending weekend, are using this time to generate traction — like the #AloneTogether posts on the pages of brews like Beeyoung and Kati Patang. Bira91 went a step further and managed to send out ‘Stay-home’ hampers just before the lockdown was enforced.
The escape route
Meanwhile, most online stores — from sneakers to luxury goods — are offering huge discounts to keep buyers spending. The marketing messages have been one constant emphatic barrage. And there are other more generic trends, which will surely get picked up by brands to cash in on, from Dalgona coffee to home recipes from famous chefs, or working into a fitness routine (where Myntra will advise you what to buy, from a yoga mat to noise-isolating headphones).
The online space and all its apps have never had a more captive audience. Online engagements are fine-tuning themselves to become the chasm of escape, to give someone a chance to virtually get away momentarily and distract themselves from the ennui of their immediate confines, to be able to live and think freely even when the walls are closing in. Zoom, the video-conferencing app, has seen more downloads in a month than TikTok and WhatsApp will, combined!
Of course, money certainly makes the whole episode easier and it is a position of privilege to be able to even contemplate all such ‘getaways’ as the lesser fortunate are being doused like cattle by the roadside with pool cleaning agents. Life is anything but fair.

They have managed to reach me through personal calls, messages, emails and even online adverts. They know their target client and they understand the urgency of the moment. And inasmuch as I know a fabulous deal when I see one, I also know that I shouldn’t (and can’t) splurge right at this moment, but I am enjoying the warm gratitude that at least I am in a position to be tortured with such ephemeral first world issues rather than anything that’s remotely immediate and threatening.
In the meantime, brands have little else to do but sit and wait this pandemic out, a curious case where our helplessness and inaction are the most effective tools in combatting this menace, even as it sends the economy and society into free fall.
