Movie Review | My Dear Killer (Valerii, 1972)

I've said before that giallo is an unusually reliable genre in that the style is the selling point so by and large the entries I've encountered have been pretty watchable. But if my recent viewing of The French Sex Murders provided a valuable lesson that these movies aren't automatically good movies and they in fact can be badly made, this proves the same from the opposite direction, that these movies aren't inherently just nonsensical bullshit with gratuitous nudity and strikingly rendered violence, that they in fact can have things like good acting and good writing.

I won't give away too much about the plot, aside from noting that it goes to pretty dark territory, although I found the handling of the subject matter pretty tactful on the whole. There is one pretty questionable choice, but I didn't feel that the movie was being exploitative. But while all of these movies technically have plots, this one is surprisingly sturdy in having its detective hero played by George Hilton chase down the different plot threads and make sense of the crimes. And another indication that this movie isn't especially exploitative is that the ugliness of the case negatively affects the detective's performance in bed. Normally in a giallo it would turn him on even more. Anyway, if you're a dum-dum like me and bad at following plots, the hero gathers all the suspects into a room and explains everything at the end while milking the drama of the reveal. So the scene is entertaining and informative.

But lest you think all this focus on plot and character means that the movie is a relatively dry experience, rest assured that it still delivers what you want from one of these. There is plenty in the way of shadows and suspense, and some pretty nasty violence, including a particularly vicious use of a power saw. And of course there are the black gloves, including a fake out that provides perhaps the movie's only moment of levity. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the beautifully patterned scarf that Helga Line, giving a nicely textured performance as the wife of one of the victims, wears in one scene. And lest you think I'm bringing up the scarf for no reason, rest assured that it's integral to the scene.

"Yesterday L Pod made history as the first Southern Resident killer whales to return to Penn Cove since the horrific captures in 1970.

Ls surprised us all again by not only returning to Penn Cove, only this time, going much further into the cove. As they entered they were very surface active with many breaches and spy hops. As the day got later they appeared to be resting in the cove.

Orcas are cultural animals and pass down information from generation to generation. The whales that experienced the 1970s capture forever avoided the area and taught their offspring to avoid it as well. L25 is the only remaining Resident that was alive during the captures, and she was present with L Pod as they entered Penn Cove.

It’s hard to say why they have chosen now to return. One possible explanation is that there has been enough lapse in generations that the younger generation is more open to exploring new places. We hope their continued presence in Saratoga Passage is an indication they are finding food. And it’s entirely possible that today they decided to duck into Penn Cove to get out of the wind gusts and rest."

Guys. Guys Ben Drowned's canon last name isn't actually Lawman

I've known this for a while, and more I think about it, the more it makes me feel like I should say something 😭

It was a misconception that started with an older version of Ben's page on the Jadusable Wiki. (It was never used for any non-ARG version of Ben prior to this.) I remember spotting Lawman being used as Ben's last name around 2016-2018 or so, and it has been edited out of his page since 2020. (It was on the page they have for the dead child rather than the Network/entity. I think it might've happened before they moved off Fandom wiki, because I think I remember seeing comments and their new wiki doesn't have those).

During the second arc (2011-2012), Jadusable mailed some bonus material to people who donated to him. One of these bonus materials was a section from a newspaper, which describes the murder-suicide of two members of the Lawman family along with their son, with some tampering to the article that appears to have been done by BEN.

You can zoom into the image and read it, or check out it's page on the wiki here (which I highly recommend as it has some added information, like what all the censored words are.) It's a very interesting piece of lore that's fun to analyze--however, I wouldn't recommend reading it if you're super squeamish or sensitive to graphic details related to death. (The method of the killing itself isn't mentioned.)

While this seems to be about Ben on the surface, it's actually not. The only way we can tell is by the date of the newspaper: In the column to the left of the "Spring Is In The Air!" paragraph, the year 2011 is mentioned, but we know that Ben died on 4/23/2004. The wording of the Lawman event feels recent (as if they're talking about an event a few months prior), when Ben's death would've been far gone by now.

With what's likely BEN tampering on the top right (where they creatively use block-out poetry to say "You shouldn't have done that," among many other things) combined with the mention of someone's son dying, it makes a ton of sense that the wiki editors assumed that Ben is a member of this Lawman family that appears here. At some point, screenshots of the wiki ended up being circulated and the larger Creepypasta fandom accepted Lawman as being Ben's "real" last name.

Lawman is actually the last name of a different (and much less relevant) character, Tyler, who appears briefly in the first and third arcs. It's not entirely clear what happened to him or his family, and I think the Newspaper Article is intended to be fun bonus material for Jadusable's donators rather than something that's meant to supply important information about the ARG characters--something like Ben's last name would be crucial for puzzles and passwords, and would give the 50 donators who received the article an unfair advantage (and Jadusable isn't the type of creator who'd be okay with that). Regardless, it carries some interesting implications about the Behavioral Event Network, and Matt's initials are also here for some reason. It's probably one of the most head-spinning materials in the whole game.
