Good Omens Aziraphale's Sad Bastard Breakup Playlist

After the breakup, Aziraphale has a new job in heaven, having taken Gabriel’s vacant position. Aziraphale is haunted by sad music reminding him of his time with Crowley. The songs are dramatic, tragic, melancholic, angry, wistful, romantic, and sentimental. How does he listen to music at his new job in the head office? Are material objects allowed? Does he keep a secret stash of tea, cake, and records and a phonograph player in his office? Does he have a celestial radio that can tune in Earth radio stations? Does he sneak off to Earth to hang out in record shops and bookstores? Or more dramatically and emotionally torturously, does he remember every note, every nuance, every feeling, of every song and replay them in his mind? P.P.S.: “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” reminds him of the time he and Crowley got drunk in the backroom at the bookshop the day the anti-Christ was delivered to Earth. Basically, this song reminds him of every time they went out for drinks or stayed in and drank.

P.P.P.S.: “I am a Courtier Grave and Serious” was the song Aziraphale planned to play when trying to tempt Crowley into learning the gavotte. It reminds him of the ball in the bookstore when he finally danced with Crowley.

P.P.P.P.S.: “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” is as close as Aziraphale can get to telling the world and Crowley to eff off. He has no more effs to give. Or at least he’s trying to convince himself he no longer gives a f***. He’s going off to his new job at the head office and Do Good.

Note on song selection:

I selected songs that thematically fit with the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the songs tell a story of Aziraphale’s struggle to reconcile his conflicted motivations. They reflect Aziraphale’s fears and desires. He fears being hauled off to hell for disobedience. He fears Crowley’s death and being alone in the world. He desires to be emotionally intimate with Crowley. (Dare he risk physical intimacy with Crowley?) He feels self-righteously indignant, but he’s soft and squishy and weepy and misses his best friend.

I don’t have much knowledge of opera or musical theater, but I have some experience with choir and solo performance. I did a lot of research into opera, art songs, musicals, showtunes, and standards to create a playlist on YouTube. Selections were based on availability, popularity, and sound quality. My big question was whether or not Aziraphale is a strict originalist or if he likes different versions of songs. In some places, I chose newer versions over original versions due to the sound quality of the recordings. I tried to keep selections accessible to a wide audience with varying degrees of musical knowledge. You may not like my choices, so your mileage may vary. You can make your own playlist.

1)Last book I read

What Stalks Among Us by Sarah Hollowell - this is upper YA and so fucking good. Bi4bi best friends Sadie and Logan find an out of season corn maze while ditching the senior class trip. They enter it and quickly figure out that this is not the first time they've entered the maze. Now they have to figure out the maze before they become part of it. It would also be nice if they stopped dying.

One of the best books I've read this year. The only way out is through and the only way through is the mortifying ordeal of being known and confronting your trauma. This is a story about friendship, forgiving yourself, and learning to move on, but also horrible corn monsters and a maze that tries to eat you.

2) A book I recommend

I recommend lots of books. But lets go with The Ghost Network by Catie Disabato. This starts with a simple premise: The biggest pop star in the world disappears one day. A struggling journalist and said pop star's personal assistant start investigating her disappearance uncovering conspiracies and secret projects along the way.

This book will make you spend way too much time looking up architectural philosophy, which is a keystone of the entire book. And, honestly, The Situationists have a number of ideas that would mesh well with fandom. I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole in the middle of reading this book.

The real fascinating part of this book's writing is that it's done at 2 narratives removed from the core story. The conceit is that what we are reading is a final edit of a manuscript handed down to the author when the person who wrote it died suddenly. That person was writing a history of the search for the missing pop star and recorded what our two main protagonists were doing. Along with various research done outside of those two. The final editor also redid interviews and some of the research to find proper citations. And the book is filled with citations. This is for lovers of footnotes.

It is such a good book.

3) A book that I couldn’t put down

Let's go with something fun. Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko is an odd book. It's a weird book. It's a compulsively readable book that is very hard to describe. Nothing anyone says will actual explain what is happening. This is, nominally, about a girl who is forced to go to a university that she never applied to or her mother will be killed. And, yes, this is a magic school. But it's also something completely different. The classes make no sense and the punishments are extreme. Nothing is explained to the students and nothing is explained to the reader. You either figure it out with our protagonist or you don't.

It's ridiculously good.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more)

After a false start I'll be going with The Legend of Eli Monpress by Rachel Aaron. A master thief, a legendary swordsman, a woman with a dark and mysterious past form a traveling party and refuse to admit that they're found family. Then the plot interferes.

This series is fun because it starts with smaller, episodic, adventures that set the stage for the big epic fantasy last 2 books. The friendship between Eli, Josef, and Nico is utterly believable and fun to watch develop from a convenient partnership into a real found family. The stakes are high, but the sense of fun from the first few books never disappears, and the world building is very unique and sets the entire stage for the story.

If you like heist fantasy pick up these books.

5) A book on my TBR

I don't have a TBR so much as a library hold list. But a couple of books I'll probably be waiting for a few months to come in are:

Can't really say anything to recommend them, but they all sounded interesting.

6) A book I’ve put down

I DNF all the time. Firm believer in DNF'ing. You don't gain points for finishing books you don't enjoy. Life is too short to spend time on books that you don't like. I also don't track my DNFs, but I recently returned Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell. Not for any good reason, I just put it down and never picked it back up and then it was due and Libby took it back.

I will DNF a book at any point that I find I don't actual like it.

7) A book on my wish list

Again, not something I really have. If I want to buy a book I do. I'm also not a book collector. Most of my reading is done through the library.

Nghi Vo has a new book coming out in October that I'll autobuy because Nghi Vo is amazing. The City in Glass sounds neat. Sapphic demon and angels falling in love as written by Nghi Vo. What's not to be excited about?

8) A favorite book from childhood

Okay, already said one of those series. So, actually let's move Circle of Magic down here from #4:

I am a re-reader. I like to re-read books like I like to rewatch my favorite tv shows or movies. I did just finish a re-read of the Emelen books by Tamora Pierce. The first quartet is The Circle of Magic. These books start with 4 children who have been through some horrible circumstances and found their way to Winding Circle Temple where they learn that they have magic, how to control it, and forge a new family. The first quartet is a middle grade series, but it deals with a lot of heavy material and the 4th book has a plague plotline.

This is probably my favorite of Pierce's work. I love the four protagonists; Sandry, Daja, Tris, and Briar. These are just fun books that deal with some heavy themes in a very age appropriate way that is also still enjoyable as an adult. They are out of print currently. The ebooks are available, but print copies are harder to find. And I don't think they all got audio releases. Which is a problem with the publisher, Scholastic, not Tamora Pierce to be clear.

10) The most books you own by a single author

Without actually counting what I own vs what I've just read it's probably Seanan McGuire or Will Wight. But probably Seanan McGuire because I also own several Mira Grant titles. Both good authors though with fun backlists. Also both authors where if you didn't like one series they wrote I'd recommend giving another series a try because they do have the range.

Favorite Seanan McGuire series is the Ghost Roads series. Which is just a fun and unique take on ghost stories. Starts with the infamous Phantom Prom Date telling her story and how she ended up a ghost and goes from there. It's very good and does tie into the InCryptid books.

Underrated McGuire series is Indexing which is a very interesting take on fairy tales and how they infect the world and how people learn to live as part of them and stop other people from being effected.

Favorite Will Wight would be The Elder Empire which consists of two companion trilogies: Shadow and Sea where each book is telling the story from opposite points of view. Short tagline would be Assassins vs Pirates in a world over run by Eldritch Creatures. Shadow is the assassins side and Sea the pirates. If you didn't like Cradle I'd say give this a shot if you want to understand why people like Will Wight.

11) A nonfiction book you own

I own a disproportionate amount of non-fiction to the amount I read. I am going to say You'll Do: A History of Marrying for Reasons Other Than Love by Marcia A Zug. If you've ever wondered what exactly is wrong with the straights and their idea of marriage this is the book to read. Utterly fascinating and the audio book is good too.

12) What are you currently reading

I already answered this with the TBR question, so I guess I'll move that down here and redo that one.

I don't really have a TBR so much as a library hold list. Jirel of Joiry just came in and I'm looking forward to finally reading this one. It's a classic of the genre and I've heard good things.

13) What are you planning on reading next?

Probably The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo which is the new Singing Hills Cycle book that just came out. If you haven't read this series do yourself a favor and go pick up The Empress of Salt and Fortune.

This series follows Cleric Chih and their talking bird companion Almost Brilliant as they travel collecting stories for their monastery. Each book is written in a different genre. They are a lot of fun and filled with a lot of emotions and showcase an amazing world.

My Review:

I LOVED this book. So much. I even preordered the audiobook after listening to only 30% of the audio arc. Because I knew I would love it and want to read it again. This is the brutal magic-school-that-is-trying-to-kill-you book of my dreams. The challenges and tests are trying to kill you. The entrance 'exam' is trying to kill you. The other students are trying to kill you. The dragons are trying to kill you (if you are found not worthy). But if you make it? You become a badass dragon rider. And then the plot thickens. And goes exactly where I hoped it would. I only guessed a tiny fraction of what happened - just enough to be very pleased with where everything went. I loved the characters. I loved violet, and how hard she worked to overcome her body's frailty (EDS, I'm guessing), and how sharp her mind was. I loved how Xaden insisted on calling her 'violence' from the beginning -- seriously, best nickname/pet name EVER. The love story was perfect. The brutality of the school and the students was perfect. The dragons were perfect. Just, chef's kiss, it was absolutely EVERYTHING I wanted, gimme the next one now. The audiobook was narrated brilliantly and I felt like I was right there for all of it. The characters had distinct voices and personalities that brought them to life, the intensity started high and only cranked higher as it went on, and Rebecca Soler's voice was pleasant to listen to. 10/10 100% recommend. Seriously, if you like brutal magic schools / dark academia / dragons? Read this now. *After some thought, I would like to recommend this to Sarah J. Maas fans. This (especially the romance) is what she was trying to do with ACOTAR, only so much better. Even if you don't like Sarah J. Maas (like me) I definitely recommend it. But also if you want that Feyre / Rhysand vibe without some of the more questionable aspects... this is it. *Thanks to NetGalley and Recorded Books for providing an early copy of the audio for review.

ARC book review: Villainess by @ author_s_bacchante on insta!

For starters, this book is easily, a 4.5/5. I have never read this genre before (gothic fantasy), and I must say, for my first book in this genre, I very much enjoyed it. It was creepy, bloody, and completely subsumed me until I was done.

This book has a few points I want to touch on,

1) Writing style, 2) Plot, and 3) Characters

*also y’all, I have a TLDR at the end of each point*

1) Writing style:

In short, think of it as a mix of Shakespeare, Mary Shelley and Jane Austen. And for the record, content/plot wise, only Mary Shelley could (somewhat) compare. I’m solely basing this off of writing style. To elaborate, the book is written very poetically, every sentence was mapped out and twisted into a very beautiful writing style that Jo really hit well. Some quote example are:

“Only fools let pride whisper in their ear. Next to pride, even honor seemed the better advisor, although both lacked practicality.”

And

“The library was a living being. bred from a thousand stories, a thousand secrets. Within its bones all the knowledge she couldn't hope to read within her feeble lifetime. Ancient, yet ageless. Old and immortal.”

Like I said, although there isn’t any Shakespearean dialect, or Austen’s romance, the writing is lyrical and kept me captivated throughout.

TLDR: The writing is poetic and reminds me of Mary Shelley, Austen and Shakespeare.

2) Plot:

This plot is not fast paced, and that’s not a bad thing! In fact it’s kinda comparable to Throne of Glass (or the whole Sarah J Maas style) where it’s the last 100 pages that really go up in flames…but in a really good way.

I’m hesitant to say much because I don’t want to spoil, but I’ll do my best. This was my first (and certainly not the last) gothic fantasy book that I have read. It took on a very different take then I was used to, much darker, bloodier and way more vicious then what I’ve read.

To try and compare, I’ll use Throne of Glass. In ToG, the main character may kill people, and commit crimes, but the death of people does phase her and she has a conscience of someone who has grown up believing that murder is necessary, but it’s not right. (Don’t come at me, I know the MC is an assassin, but throughout the series she isn’t often killing just to kill, there’s reason and she has a moral compass of a sort.)

However in Villainess, you see a stark contrast. Death is everywhere, people live and die. Sacrifices and even the drinking of blood is seen as common and not a strange occurrence. Not that it’s a good thing, it’s just the differences. It’s really interesting seeing a perspective where our MC just grows up in a world where death is ever prevalent, it’s something I’ve yet to see truly explored and I think Moonless did it very well.

Overall, the plot started slow because you need to get used to the world-building (like any fantasy book), but once you get past the first few chapters you will be hooked.

TLDR: A lotta death, but good plot cause we have a badass main character.

3) Characters:

I’ll talk on the main 3 and then maybe discuss a few side ones.

Kasdeya: Our main character.

Oh. My. Gosh. Genuinely I adore her. She is the classic badass female character but make it darker. Is it cliche? Probably. Do I care? No way.

I could go on about her character but instead I’m going to just give you a few quotes and see what you think.

“My selfish desire is to read until I'm sick of it, day after day.”

“Tie your tongue in a knot and choke on it”

“you can’t kill your fate.” - Alexander

“I will if he stands in my way.” Kasdeya

I think I can leave it at that, she’s iconic and I love her.

Icarus: THIS LITTLE BABY. I LOVE HIM ALSO. He’s the oldest of the group but just so adorable. Idk I love him.

On of my favorite quotes by him is. “People will tolerate anything to avoid loneliness.” And I just AKDNSJJW. He’s a little baby and I love him.

Alexander: Honestly, he’s my favorite character, hands down. I love Kasdeya but she’s a close second to this absolute fantastic man. Alexander is also known as the Jester and my gosh he fulfills that role beautifully.

Here are some of my favorite quotes by this man.

“I know you, (insert name). I know your ticks and tendencies, your patterns and reactions. You’re a muscle memory to me.”

“Be mad with me.”

“Anyone would be honored to bind their fate to yours.”

And lastly, I want to add a few ‘call and answer’ quotes that were my favorite.

“Shut up.”

“Bite me.”

"Tie your tongue in a knot and choke on it.? Her blood roar gripped by a storm.

"Oh, that's a new one!"

“I’m so angry, I sometimes don’t even recognize myself.”

“I recognize you.” (This one made me scream)

TLDR: The characters are all cinnamon rolls and I love them all.

Final Thoughts:

This book is a definite recommend for anyone looking for a good, gothic fantasy book that will be a series and has very good world building imo. I hope you all enjoy it as well as I did.

Why keep an open mind about Elain

(And why her book will slap hard)

When I was writing this one-shot right here, I read a few posts about Elain as a spy, some of them liked the idea, others didn't. Which is totally ok, if you don't, of course. I also reread a lot of scenes from the books to understand better how this could play out.

But I came across some comments about how Elain being a spy would make her "lose her characterization" or be "out of character". So I wanted to talk a little about it. This post will be discussing those comments specifically and why you should keep an open mind about Elain.

NOTE: As usual, sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language. I really hope I made myself clear. If you have any comments, I would love to hear them. Be kind!

1. Elain as a character

The first reason I don't believe that argument is because ACOSF made it clear that we know very little about Elain. So how can we say it would be something out of character for her when we barely know her as a character?

So far, we only have other characters points of view on Elain: a person who has a sweet temper. But ACOSF came to tell us that there is another side of her. Nesta expected Elain to cry because of Graysen. She didn't. Elain didn't back down from her fight with Nesta, she didn't hesitate when it came to the Trove or the Hewn City, she laughed when Nesta told her to fuck off. In every single of those moment, Elain's behavior is emphasized by one reaction of the others: surprise.

"You think I’m to blame for his death?” Challenge filled each word. Challenge—from Elain, of all people.

"Elain showed some teeth," I observed. "I wasn't expecting that."

And this is nothing new. Look at what we have in ACOFAS:

and Elain—Elain—had taken up Azriel’s dagger and killed the King of Hybern instead.

The last two books highlight that 1) we don't know everything about her and 2) we expect one behavior from her.

But most importantly: she often doesn't correspond to what it is expected of her, especially in ACOSF.

And then we have this:

With time and safety, perhaps we'll see a different side of her emerge.

But I also think we haven't yet seen all she has to offer.

And before this makes someone think Elain will not get a book because we don't have much on her character, this is exactly what books are for. To develop a character. Before ACOSF, Nesta didn't have much development either. We had seen ACOFAS lay the background for her, the same way ACOSF laid the background for Elain's story.

Elain will surprise us. Sarah is practically screaming that at this point. So before judge something as out of character, we need to have in mind that Elain will have her arc and by the end of it, she will be different, she will grow. Which leads me to:

2. In order to be developed, characters need to change

Before ACOSF came out, lots of people said Nesta would never be a warrior, especially because of this line:

And why must I train at all? I am no warrior nor do I desire to be. (ACOWAR)

And I understand. I really do. But we went from that to Nesta not only becoming a Valkyrie, but also thinking about starting a small unit of females. Yes, that line is back in ACOWAR. However, in ACOSF Gwyn and Emerie said the exactly same thing:

Gwyn gestured to Nesta's fighting leathers, the overlapping scales. "I'm not a warrior".

Emerie's face yielded nothing, as blattle-hardened as Azriel's. "I'm not interested in a warrior's training".

There's a difference between developing a character and doing something out of character.

Elain already is passing through an internal change, which means SJM is preparing her for her arc. So we have to keep in mind that Elain will pass through challenges, changes in her journey, where she will learn new lessons, abilities. She will face and deal with her traumas and flaws, because she will be developed as a character. Of course, her essence will still be there, but in order to grow, she needs to change as well.

At this point lots of things happened to her, now we will see Elain making things happen. Changes like that are inevitable, necessary, but not out of character.

Now, if Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie became warriors, why would it be so out of character for Elain to become a spy?

Personally, I think if Elain became a warrior, that could be considered out of character, because Sarah already told us that her strength comes from a different place:

Elain had always been gentle and sweet—and I had considered it a different sort of strength. A better strength. To look at the hardness of the world and choose, over and over, to love, to be kind. She had been always so full of light.

Of course, this is Feyre's Pov, but is also SJM talking about Elain's nature.

We have to understand the difference between characters' point of view and what SJM is trying to tell us. For example, Nesta in ACOSF had one perception of Elain ("she is like a dog"), but SJM emphasized Nesta's perception as not correspondent to Elain's behavior. How? Using that scene where Elain talks about Nesta's dancing. in that moment, Cassian and the readers realized Nesta's point of view was biased, non correspondent to what Elain was showing us in that scene.

I'm saying that because there's a difference between narrator and author. But this is another discussion entirely.

But I truly believe from what we have seen so far, Elain isn't the warrior type. And despite the fact that we had just read ACOSF, therefore another book about warriors training doesn't sound so appealing, from what we had seen until now, Elain's has potencial (build up) to go to another direction, one that we haven't seen yet.

3. Elain already has what it takes

I want to look at this:

I wondered if Rhys’s spymaster often got his information through stone-cold manners as much as stealth and shadow.

My sister Elain can convince anyone to do anything with a few smiles.

For the record, Feyre said this in ACOWAR and these both scenes are very close to each other.

Spying is not all about shadows and stealth. Azriel works from the shadows, but if Elain can be so lovely and convincing that anyone would do anything for her, she could be a different kind of spy. And with her Seer powers, she could be a valuable one. As much or even more than the Night Court spymaster. Look at this:

Shadowsingers are rare—coveted by courts and territories across the world for their stealth and predisposition to hear and feel things others can’t.

We know Elain can be almost as stealthy as Azriel. And she is a Seer, which means she can See and hear things others can't, too. Not to mention we already have seen that she is observant and knows how to keep a secret.

Elain pushed, “We keep it secret—we send the servants away [...] No one will know.”

“I think she’s got you beat for secret-keeping.”

Elain saw every single thing Nesta had done, and understood why.

Not only she is observant, but also knows how to read people, to understand them. Look at these scenes where Nesta said basically the same thing, but Feyre didn't understand her. Elain on the other hand...

With Feyre:

“Father would want you to—”

“Don’t you finish that sentence.” Despite the sound shield around us, there was nothing to block the view of my sister baring her teeth. The view of her fingers curling into invisible claws. A scene. This was about to become a scene in the worst way. (ACOFAS)

With Elain:

"[...] if Father were here—”

“Don’t ever mention him.” Nesta bared her teeth, but kept her voice low. "Never fucking mention him again.”

Pain slowly washed over Elain’s face. And understanding. “Is that what this is all about? Father?” Silver lined Elain’s eyes, but her voice remained steady, sure. “There was nothing that could have been done to save him, Nesta." (ACOSF)

Elain understood exactly what was going on with Nesta.

Nothing is more telling to me than this, and I highly doubt SJM didn't want to show us not only Nesta's internal issues, but how Elain can understand and read very others very easily as well.

Elain also understood when Feyre wasn't sure about buying gifts. And not get me started on Azriel's bonus chapter, where it's emphasized repeatedly that they can read and comprehend each other without necessarily saying what they meant. This shows a connection between them, yes, but also a skill.

Just imagine how valuable and rare she would be for the Night Court.

And the best part is it wouldn't be out of character, because she already presented those features. Besides, Elain can be lovely, delicate and be a bad ass spy (or whatever she wishes to, tbh) . Even better: she can use those characteristics in her favor.

Do not forget what Rhysand said: Elain is sweet and she is not afraid of get her hands dirty. We just haven't seen that yet, because SJM will show us that in her book. Simple as that.

4. Elain being a spy attends SJM's pattern

In every book (or series) so far we had a female character learning something new. Feyre learned how to control her powers (and to read), Nesta learned how to be a warrior. I think it's safe to say that Elain will learn something in order to be developed as a character.

You could argue she could learn anything, which is fair. But in ACOSF we learned that Elain can be stealthy as well. SJM emphasized it again and again, and there is no way in hell she did that just for fun. It's safe to say by now that even if she doesn't become a spy, this ability will play a role in her book.

A few examples that we all know too well by now:

Elain spoke from the doorway, having appeared so silently that they all twisted toward her, “Using me.”

"You came,” Elain said behind her, and Nesta started, not having heard her sister approach. She scanned Elain from head to toe, wondering if she’d been taking lessons in stealth either from Azriel or the two half-wraiths she called friends.

She'd leave her gift amongst his other, opened presents, subtle and unnoticed.

What is curious is that stealth is associated with Azriel, but also with Nuala and Cerridwen, Elain's friends. (Here, I highly recommend this amazing post for more on this friendship and what it means to Elain’s future).

I don't have a doubt the next book is about Elain, it will be her book. So you can't tell me the fact that her friends and love interest are spies is just a coincidence or that won't mean anything. Not when Elain herself has already started to show that she can be just as stealthy and subtle as any of them.

In this scenario, we have:

Elain learning how to be a spy with Azriel, whilst they work together to find the Trove and help each other to heal from their issues.

A female main character learning something new with the help from her love interest whilst they work together to solve a problem connected to the main plot and help each oher to heal from their issues.

I PRESENT YOU THE SJM'S PATTERN.

I know some people like or don't like this theory because that would mean Elain would have a connection to Azriel or because they don't like her becoming "similar to Azriel".

But the thing is: they already share a connection, they know each other for almost two years now and most of their interactions happened "off-screen", so they don't need her to become a spy to want to be together. They already do.

And mostly important, she wouldn't become similar to Azriel, because Elain already has the required features. We don't know much about her, but so far what we do know is: she is stealthy and a good secret keeper. She knows how to read and understand people. She can hear and see things others can't, because she is a Seer, and she can be convincing af.

Most of those were emphasized again in ACOSF concomitantly with Elain's another side. (Tell me again the next book isn't about her).

And again: a female character learning something with her love interest is SJM's pattern. We've just read a book that follows this exactly structure. Are we going to say Nesta or Feyre lost their characterization because they learned and now share the same abilities as Cassian and Rhys?

SJM already answered that for us in ACOSF:

“Does it undermine my image as a warrior to be with you?”

“No. Does it undermine Feyre’s when she’s seen with Rhys?”

This is so telling, I literally stopped my reading at this. We tend to put this passage aside because of what comes next (Cassian being very discreet and screaming he's Nesta's mate to every single soul in Velaris to hear), which is totally fair. But right there, SJM is telling us that female characters sharing abilities with their love interests is no reason to undermine them. On the contrary, in her books this is a way for them to heal togheter.

Knowing SJM, Elain being a spy along with Azriel, Nuala and Cerridwen wouldn't be nothing new. We have seen this story over and over again.

We have so much build up for this, I could go on and on and on. And before someone says this won't work because Azriel has to stay away from her, just take a second to think about how much tension we would get if they are forced to work together in order to find the Trove (or any other reason that SJM will come up with). We'll have a story full of secrets, tension, drama, angst, passion, desire, love. Things too easy don't make a good story.

But at the end, even if she does not become a spy, I just think we have many possibilities for Elain and an amazing story ahead of us. I really want people to keep an open mind about her and her book and not judge too harsh amazing possibilities as out of character. If Nesta hadn't became a warrior, we wouldn't have known the Valkyries. So maybe, when you judge a possibility like that, you are closing yourself to an amazing journey.

And also, Nesta was once judged and hated. A lot of people ended up changing their minds, which is great because she is awesome. So I think we already learned that lesson.

We will see another side of Elain emerge and she will surprise us. That's not me, that's SJM. She already told us that. Repeatedly.

All of this just to say: keep an open mind about Elain. She has what it takes and will surprise us - and I can't wait to see her becoming a badass.

Books I’ve read this year, roughly in order

I’ve decided to make a record of all the books I read this year, and post it on tumblr, because why not. Of the books I read, nine were on my phone (thank you libby), one was an audiobook (before I remembered that I’m terrible at listening to audiobooks), and eight were short story collections (some of these were also ebooks). In order, with some thoughts, below the cut:

Ghost Wall, Sarah Moss- a reread, and just as good the second time around. Compact and tense, with a slow creeping sense of dread.

The Violins of Saint Jacques, Patrick Leigh Fermor- the back of this book frames it around the volcanic eruption at the end of the book. The framing device is about how the woman telling the story was the only survivor of the volcanic eruption at the end of this book. It’s not a surprise, and yet when it happens, it’s so sudden and violent and all-encompassing that it’s still shocking.

Faceless Killers- found this in the books app on my phone (long story) and tore through it in a day. Enjoyable, dark, and twisty.

Small Gods, Terry Pratchett- same books app find as Faceless Killers, and the first Pratchett book I’ve read that isn’t Good Omens. I enjoyed it, especially Pratchett’s sense of humor. I do intend to read more Discworld books, though they’re not at the top of my list.

A High Wind in Jamaica, Richard Hughes- I feel like I enjoyed reading the long article analyzing the social context of the setting almost as much as I enjoyed reading the book, though that’s not entirely a knock on it. It seemed to hover in a strange space between a children’s story and one that’s too bleak for children.

Matrix, Lauren Groff- very readable and great at drawing you into the world of the medieval monastery.

The Traveling Grave, L.P. Hartley- unfortunately, I feel like I can barely remember any of the stories in this one, though I did enjoy it. It’s more creeping dread than outright horror.

Skin Tight, Carl Hiaasen- the audiobook! Also a reread of a book I’d initially read maybe ten years ago. It’s not my favorite Hiaasen book, but it’s still a good one. (I also started listening to the audiobook for Sick Puppy, but never finished.)

Where the Wild Ladies Are, Aoko Matsuda- part of my efforts to read short stories, and also more works in translation. I liked it, though I don’t have much to say about it.

Basic Black with Pearls, Helen Weinzweig- I feel like I read a lot of this in a warm bath in the middle of winter, which may have affected my opinion, but I really loved this. A married woman wanders around her hometown of Toronto, supposedly there to meet up with her secret-agent lover who she has followed all over the world, and who may or may not be real. But the meat of this book is in the encounters she has while wandering the city, and how they tie into her own past and the legacy of the Holocaust. It’s a strange, dreamlike book, and it’s stuck with me.

The Book of Difficult Fruit, Kate Lebo- I honestly expected this to contain more scientific and historical background on the fruits and less aspects of personal essays, but that’s more of a problem with me than the book.

Valancourt Book of Horror Stories, Vol. 1, multiple authors- a good read. The editors at Valancourt seem very good at selecting stories for their short story collections.

Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir- I downloaded the free sample from Libby at the airport, then immediately checked out the full book and read it in a day. I fell in love with Gideon as a character and narrator, and the ending was both tragic and exactly what I wanted.

Good Behavior, Molly Keane- like drinking vinegar littered with glass shards, in the best way possible. Wonderfully subtle and full of darker implications. The kicker is a killer.

Crocodilia, Philip Ridley- the narration in this felt very amateurish at times, though as the novel went on, I found it worked well to get me into the mindset of the narrator. The novel becomes an incredible puzzle box of twists and stories folding in on themselves and repeating, while still maintaining its core focus on first love and coming of age as a young gay man.

Harrow the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir- I also tore through this in a day, though it made me miss Gideon even more.

Song for the Unraveling of the World, Brian Evenson- I’ve read a lot of praise for Evenson’s writing, and I did enjoy this book, though it didn’t draw me in. Also read on the Libby app, which may have affected my opinion.

Wise Children, Angela Carter- realized this year I wanted to read more Angela Carter, because the only thing I’d read by her was The Bloody Chamber, and that was a shame, because I love her writing. I loved this. It’s sprawling and dramatic, but filled with so much joy and zest for life.

Memories: From Moscow to the Black Sea, Teffi- I read most of this while getting my car serviced. That has nothing to do with anything, just wanted to mention it. Beautifully written, but also a fascinating look at the uncertainty of exile, and yet how life seems to go on in fits and starts.

The Pure and the Impure, Colette- beautiful writing, again. Just fascinating to read about queer communities in Paris in the early twentieth century.

A Certain Hunger, Chelsea G. Summers- read in the Libby app, after I’d had my eye on this book. I remember wondering while reading what the narrator thought about Ruth Reichl, only for her to mention her a few pages later. In my opinion, the food writing aspects of this novel were relatively weak for a novel supposedly based around it. Unfortunately, I feel like the book was blandly heterosexual in a way I found uninteresting. I do think this novel stuck the landing, though, in a way that made me appreciate the rest of it more.

Growing Things, Paul G. Tremblay- also read in the Libby app. Notes from the Dog Walker was the standout story for me, though I enjoyed the rest of it enough to consider seeking out some of his novels.

Deep Blue Good-by, John D. MacDonald- I tore through two Travis McGee books in the Libby app after reading about the author while looking up Carl Hiaasen trivia. I honestly haven't read a ton of thrillers, but it was fascinatingly emotional and honest about the pain the protagonist experiences for a detective novel from the 1960s.

Nightmare in Pink, John D. MacDonald- The other Travis McGee novel, also read on my phone. Certain lines of this book still haunt me.

A Nail, A Rose, Madeleine Bourdouxhe- actually started in early 2021, but I only finished it this year. Another short story collection, this time primarily about ordinary women in France and Belgium around World War II. Well-written, but I didn’t personally love it.

Lolly Willows, Sylvia Townsend Warner- more sedately paced than I expected, but the final conversation between Laura and the devil is astoundingly ahead of its time. In retrospect, it’s an interestingly subtle take on the power fantasy suggested by the blurb on the back.

The Alteration, Kingsley Amis- read before writing evviva il coltello. I would classify this as science fiction, but its entire focus on a world less technologically-developed than our own was an interesting twist. (Though I don’t read a lot of science fiction, so I couldn’t give you the proper context of whether it’s actually unusual.) Very much of its time.

The Juniper Tree, Barbara Comyns- I hate to say it, but my favorite part of the book was probably the cover. Fascinatingly timeless in its setting and an interesting update on the fairytale, but didn’t compel me.

A Night in the Lonesome October, Roger Zelazny- my second year reading this over the month of October, and I intend to do so next year. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of “spooky season”.

The Collector, John Fowles- I’d heard of this book years ago, and was suddenly seized with the need to read it. Creepy, though it did feel like the plot dragged in places, though that’s understandable for its format.

Ghost Sequences, A. C. Wise- the blurb compares her writing to Angela Carter, which I don’t think is quite accurate; her prose doesn’t quite capture the same poetic highs of Carter’s work. But I enjoyed the stories in this collection, especially their incorporation of different forms of media in both form and theme, whether it’s apps or newspaper article excerpts.

Isolde, Irina Odoyevtseva- I originally read this in early 2021, but decided to revisit it this year. Excellently written in what it conceals through the narration, and simultaneously glittery and bleak. It’s a fascinating snapshot of the lives of young Russian emigres in France, post 1917.

The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis- started sometime in July, and repeatedly picked up and set down, which is really not the best way to read a book that’s dense with literary and philosophical references that I’m not familiar with.

From what Harry had read, the food wasn’t overly expensive but it was still comparable to what you would get at one of the more expensive places. If Harry could he would take Louis to the biggest most expensive and extravagant restaurants to do what he planned to tonight, but this would do.

After being led to their table Harry nervously tapped his jacket pocket, sighing in relief when he felt the small box still there. Tonight was the night. He couldn’t wait till it was time to surprise Louis with all the gifts he got for him. Then finally the big surprise.

Arthur Machen’s short stories, and especially The Inmost Light,

M. R. James’ short stories, of course, but especially Count Magnus,

The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson; the entire collection serves as one of my favourite retellings of the Daemon Lover ballad, although it’s not a very straightforward one—The Man in the Blue Suit (slash James Harris) is at most a peripheral figure, and his status as a supernatural entity is up in the air, since most of the stories are uncanny instead of explicitly supernatural (and yet, whenever he enters the stage, something shifts in the atmosphere & things go... very wrong, very quickly). I especially recommend The Tooth!

german-language musicals! goodness, they’re some full-throated, pulpy, gothic extravaganza. here’s my favourite scene from Tanz der Vampire, and here’s the english lyrics, and here’s the english-language demo (it is... not as good as the original, alas). i also recommend Elisabeth & Rebecca! speaking of pulpy musicals: can we talk about the riddle from the scarlet pimpernel? because it has no business being this catchy. 

alright, i’ve covered some lowbrow musicals, so let’s talk highbrow now: The Great Comet is based on a tiny excerpt from War & Peace, but good god. it /feels/ monumental in scope. this song is... yeah. yeah. it’s also sung-through (like Les Mis, or Evita), so you’re not missing out on anything, even if you only listen to the cast recording!

speaking of songs with great Madi energy... Take This Waltz by Leonard Cohen (based on a poem by Lorca!) definitely reminds me of you!

also. Memorial by Susanne Sundfør. it’s the drama! and Kate Bush, obviously, especially Hammer Horror (even more obviously) <3 and this rendition of Memory! 

i don’t know whether you own ps4, or even consider yourself someone keen on video games as a medium, but madi. madi. madi. bloodborne is practically tailor-made for you, and i’m not even exaggerating. dubious medicine! secret cults! victorian architecture! blood, blood everywhere! eldritch abominations beyond human comprehension! i’m going to fly you to poland just so you can play it. 

on a related note... netflix’s castlevania is. well, i genuinely cannot say whether it’s good, but it’s fun, and its aesthetic is basically gothic on steroids. very explicit, that is to say: sex and murder usually take place simultaneously.
