okay so the bad news is that my wifi is out (in that it is very very slow most of the time rn) and i have very little data and don’t really wanna buy more so that’s why i’ve been less active. the good news (for Me) is that netflix still mostly works so i’ve been watching through the entirety of yugioh duel monsters so like at least i’m not bored and stuck in 144p youtube land. the great news is that i’ve decided that i think it’d be fun to try and make my own trading card game. because all i’ve been doing for the past two days has been watching an anime about a tcg. this is a very good idea with no flaws

I may or may not have spent the past week planning out a pair of acrylic charms for an event coming up in December (instead of working on the comic I want to finish in time for that event.)
These are Pixiv Factory-generated mockups. I don’t know if the final product will have the same cut, but it’s nice to have an idea as to what it will look like once the printers are done with it.

Queue stalking/tracking Light down with that internet you don’t use on your stickered laptop.
Did erasing her Death Note memories wipe her internet usage memories, too? She probably just meant that she didn’t use it regularly as a hobby. She was shown reading a lot. Maybe she wasn’t allowed to use the internet while under surveillance in the HQ building and was bitterly stating that fact? Like, “Of COURSE I haven’t read the recent internet rumors. I’m not allowed to. 😠”
Eh, got a chuckle out of me. Times have changed since 2003.

Drowning Love (2016)
Tumblr media
I'm just going to straight-up say do not be fooled by this cover! Okay, be slightly fooled but like. Be warned.
As a disclaimer for this movie I'm just warning for thinking of watching it: rape and murder- well, suicide actually. Technically. A further warning for aggressive blond boys you can’t tell what the hell are thinking. Trauma, too. I think? Also, do not expect a happy ending. A beautiful one, but not necessarily a good-feels one.
I won’t say it was a terrible movie, I’m here to rant about it after all. But I wouldn’t say it’s one of my favourites. More like one I will look back on fondly, which is mostly due to one character (*cough* Otomo *cough*).
So, Drowning Love: Natsume Mochizuki (Komatsu Nana), a teen model for a magazine, is forced to move away from Tokyo with her family to live with her grandfather out to a rural town. Less than happy with the turn of events, she doesn't see any point in staying away from Tokyo until she meets Koichiro Hasegawa (Suda Masaki), also known as Koh, a member of a locally prominent family of Shinto priests. The two are instantly attracted to each other and as they keep meeting, they get closer and closer. It's a story of a love that's too powerful for either of them to ignore, and how it fairs when their relationship crumbles under pressure and complicated emotions.
I'll admit, it's a kind of confusing movie. Some actions seem random and scenes skip moments in time that leave you trying to figure out what’s going on and so I understand why some who watched it saw that as a problem. But I can also kind of understand it. For one, it’s a movie adaption of a manga so of course, it’s condensed with moments left out. For another, I think it’s important to remember that it’s a movie about teenagers, featuring a romance of youth. Teenagers are immature, prone to experimentation, and are impulsive. It’s this impulsivity that I feel well explains parts that confused people the most such as the random bouts of running the characters were prone to. It’s all about this new and intense attraction, a push and pull kind of thing that’s full of energy and curiosity. Excitement pushes one to run, prompting the other to give chase. It’s a dare and it’s a kind of dance only they know. That’s how I saw it, anyway. In that sense, I feel the movie managed to capture that aspect of teenage romance well. It was beautiful, the actors were beautiful, the direction the plot went was... slightly less beautiful, but the ending was beautiful too. I actually found it pretty sweet as a whole (if annoying with the guy’s constant aggressive behaviour and the girl's passiveness). That is, up until the first crisis of the film, which hit me like a slap to the face when I least expected it to. Which may have been the intended impression? The rest of the movie deals with the consequences, rising in tension until the equally jarring climax and the resolution. Which was where my man Otomo SHONE.
Que me ranting about a fictional character.
He was just perfect? And I loved him? He prioritised giving Natsume the comfort she needed, most times above his own feelings, and was not too embarrassed to laugh at himself, to do anything to make her laugh. He was just an amazing friend before being a romantic interest and as someone who loves good platonic relationships, I loved it. My favourite scenes are all ones with him in it, including one near the end where the mood of the scene is depressing and he starts singing karaoke despite the pain he's in and it turns everything funny and silly and it's all to stop Natsume from crying and to get her to laugh again because he knows what's going to happen. It just made everything better.
I also loved loved loved that really visually gorgeous scene with the red flowers (Otomo happens to be in it too lol) where they put the flowers in their mouths with the backdrop of red flowers and then Koh bikes past- it was just so satisfying to see and made me want to paint it.
I''m not going to say much about the ending for fear of spoiling. When I first finished it, I was kind of like "um, what the heck?". Then I thought about it some more, rewatched the ending and cried. You just have to carefully watch Natsume's and Koh's faces towards the last few minutes for it to really hit home and thinking about the entire movie, it really is just achingly beautiful. Yes, some shots were oddly filmed and it certainly wasn't perfect. But I can look past it and say that overall, it managed to make me think and I enjoyed it! Which for me, is all that really matters.
Side note that may make you smile: Apparently the actors behind the main two are currently dating. Like, as of 2019 I think. Which is cool.

So I got my study book in the mail today for the level 1 lace exam from the Japanese Knitting Organization.  I want to stress the word KNITTING here.
I always forget that, in Japanese, knitting is frequently 手編み, which also covers crochet too.  I was prepared for that, I can study crochet lace because I actually do know how to crochet, I just don’t do it often (long story short I broke two fingers in my right hand many years ago and it hurts to hold my crochet hook for long periods of time.  I knit to compensate).  But it turns out that it means more than that.  A fuckton more.
In Japanese, 手編み (teami) also means bobbin, tatting, macrame, embroidery, cross stitch, and whatever the hell the two images above are.  Does anyone know what those two images relate to?  Because, by the time I take the course next year, I need to be a master at them as graded by Japan’s skill level.  Thankfully, after looking through the book as to the level of product I should be able to produce, probably not hard to be able to study up to be able to pass the exam next year.
Their knitted lace portion is ladder lace, some of the simplest lace in my opinion, and some feathers and fan lace.  Those were their examples of master level lace.  I’m... I’m good on that front.  Really super good.  But I haven’t done crochet lace in years (thankfully Japanese patterns are all charted, and I can read those easily and do it with little difficulty), and, thankfully, YouTube has a shit ton of instructional videos to watch that I can learn from.  And, if I use clothes pins and improvise a pillow (sturdy, round, cloth covered pillows are plentiful and cheap in Japan, as a lot of people use them for sitting on floors with), I can start doing that tomorrow, and I can get tatting supplies at the dollar store easily enough.  I just have no clue what the two pictures are related to.  But I’ve also only glanced at the book, I’ll be reading it much more carefully and taking notes tomorrow.
I need to check to see if I need to bring a completed product.  None of the master lace is beaded.  I want to see the eyebrow raise for my ‘unconventional beaded lace’ if I bring that in as my completed project.  Japan doesn’t do unconventional well, even if the rest of the craft world sees beaded knitting as completely conventional.

Hi! I just found your old yakuza pins post and hope it's not too late to ask something. Were did RGGO state that 'Daigo picked out the Hakuho Clan crest for Mine'? I'm not doubting you or anything, I just want to know more about Daigo playing favorites >:) Thank you for the food!
Thanks! I checked my notes to be sure and it was in the Mine board game event "The Man Called Yoshitaka Mine" but UNFORTUNATELY I never posted a full translation of that event and I went through it way back in 2019 when it first ran and, upon second review, Daigo just says "Hakuho Clan huh.... That's a good name, Mine." (白峯会… か。いい名前じゃないか、峯。) which I'm assuming 2.5 years ago I got hung up on the じゃないか which dictionary entries will give as like "how about we..." so I probably took it as him suggesting it as a good name rather than suggesting it is a good name lol. I'll fix that on the yakuza pins post
but there was plenty of other favorite playing at least: here was my personal recap, which likely has a few other minor errors
-Mine just sorta............ saw Daigo from the distance, overheard that 4 of his dudes had just died protecting him, and was like damn............ what kind of dude inspires that in men. I must know more. Then immediately finds the closest yakuza (who happens to be a Nishikiyama guy) and convinces him to let him join up -Kanda saves his life by running a dude over and he decides okay I hate this guy but I do owe him one. I'm going to drag this shitty family to the top so that Daigo will notice me -He smooth talks his way into joining Kanda in his meeting with Daigo and finally gets to talk to the guy. Daigo thinks Mine is super cool gives a passionate speech about protecting the clan. Every single one of Mine's internal thoughts is about Daigo -Daigo then immediately chews him out a lil and says the Nishikiyama family must stop fighting other Tojo dudes. Mine decides this is the most important thing -True to his word when a tojo dude points a gun at Mine and Kanda he's just like damn. I can't fight him. guess I'll die. Kanda runs away -Instead Daigo shows up and takes the bullet for him, because they're family now. Mine is ready to kill -Daigo also attempts to trade one billion yen to the guy for Mine's life. gay ass -Kanda also got Daigo when he ran away, so Mine decides Kanda is useful............. for now -2 months later Daigo personally gives Mine the Hakuho Family (白峯 using the same 峯 as Mine), a direct line family. Mine has been a member of the tojo for two months. Daigo also has them swear up as kyoudai. gay ass -sometime between then and a year later Mine is promoted all the way up to lieutenant advisor of the tojo
the wiki actually has a solid really recap of the event that covers things in a lot more detail! sorry for the accidental mis-info and thanks for sending me an ask about it so that I could take a second look!

Of late, I've been watching a great number of videos depicting solo battles versus a raid boss in Phantasy Star Online 2, called Dark Falz Luther/Loser. And they're very impressive, how a single player can, through knowledge of the game mechanics and a great deal of skill, overcome a challenge that was designed for 16 players simultaneously. But that isn't the reason why I watch them.
I just... really enjoy watching the boss.
Just... looking at how it moves, listening to its utterances and the noises it makes as it attacks, soaking in its quite-frankly godly leitmotif, studying the intricacies of its design (it's literally a dark clockwork bird god that can manipulate and stop time). I'll watch the same video on repeat, for hours. Not have it on in the background while I do something else. Just deadass sit and watch Luther, as if he was some kind of gaudy bird in an electronic cage.
And I wonder if that's what it's like to have a favourite windup toy or something. Like, you turn the key on its back, and off it goes. And you just watch it, and listen to the noises it makes, and you feel comforted. And I wonder what that says about me, that as a grown adult I dedicate so much of my time and attention to this one particular fight in a game crammed to the gills with epic, memorable boss encounters.
Perhaps it's the autism, my craving for familiarity and repetition taken to some apothestic extreme (probably why I also love clockwork so much). Perhaps I'm engaging in some kind of modern-day worship ritual, though to what end I can't imagine. Perhaps, in some strange way, I identify with this being, this manicial godlike demon clock-bird thing who wants to know everything in the universe, not for some grand utopian/dystopian reason, but just for its own sake, and doesn't much care how he goes about fulfilling that aim.
...anyone else? No? Just me? Okay then.
