Me and my awesome earrings are off to Winnipeg to participate in the Generation Energy national conference on Canada’s future power systems. Thanks National Resources Canada and Minister Carr — it’s an honour to get to go pester experts with impertinent questions. If you’re Canadian, you don't have to make your way to Manitoba to weigh in. Make your voice heard online: generationenergy.ca. I'm especially excited about getting to be on the @Metis_In_Space podcast. Is reinventing energy an opportunity to decolonize? Let’s hope — but let’s also cast our eye toward #muskratfalls My bottom line going to Generation Energy as a storyteller: We need a new story. Not just a de-carboned version of what we have now. To get truly green we will need to reinvent (or leapfrog?) the grid. That gives us a chance to create something more local, more equitable. We need that new vision, that story. We need a Star Trek, a thing to give us hope, a thing to aim for. Not just: Don't Warm The Planet And Kill Everything. I think we can do this, though urgent and radical action is needed. But we need to inspire ourselves. We need to believe we can. #generationenergy #greenfuture #canada

Land Protectors Stage Walk-in at Government Offices (8m04s) On Monday, I had my first opportunity to cover the Labrador Land Protectors group as they staged a walk-in at the Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut government offices. Afterwards, I sat down with Marjorie Flowers, a long-time opponent of the Muskrat Falls project who talked about the letter they presented to government officials and the ongoing Muskrat Falls saga. http://www.cbc.ca/listen/shows/labrador-morning/segment/13304677 #jonnyvsthebigland #journolife #journogoals #HVGB #MuskratFalls #labrador (at Town of Happy Valley - Goose Bay)

http://aptnnews.ca/2017/06/09/labrador-grandmother-released-from-mens-penitentiary/
Beatrice Hunter was released after 10 days in court. she was arrested for violating a court-injunction that banned her from being anywhere within 1 kilometer of the Muskratfalls work site. There was many rally's to get Hunter released from jail. they ended with 2600 signatures to get Hunter released. there was a rally in Ottawa the same day of her release in from of the Prime Ministers house. The rally was organized by Matthew Behrens. Leah Gazan is a activist that spoke at the rally. After Hunter was released she was allowed to got back to protesting outside Muskrat falls with her people again.
It is completely unfair that Beatrice Hunter was jailed for protesting when; firstly, she did nothing wrong she was just protesting like many other people. Secondly, she was just fighting for the rights they they deserve and the land that is theirs to be left to them.

BEATRICE HUNTER IS RELEASED!!!! Congratulations to Beatrice, her family, to the Indigenous communities in Labrador, and the countless others who have been fighting back against the Muskrat Falls project and the continued colonization of our lands by government. This victory today would not have been possible without the strength, resilience, and resistance of all those fighting for Beatrice's release - thank you, mii'gwetch, wela'lioq! Let's celebrate this victory today and remember that our broader fight continues for a better tomorrow - solidarity! #freebeatrice #beatricehunter #muskratfalls #nlpoli #resist150

Muskrat Fals: the Impact
What recently occurred at Muskrat Falls affects the indigenous population residing by the Lower Churchill river. The installation of the dam will cause the river to flood, thus, releasing methyl mercury into the water. This will poison the fish downstream, a staple food in the First Nations’ diets, and other sea life. The neglect Nalcor, a crown corporation, showed in the Muskrat Falls project is widely criticized. Individuals continue to speak up about the issue. Let this case of indifference towards the Nunatsiavut be a precedent to other similar cases in the future. The government must know that the inherent injustice brought upon the Nunatsiavut people is wrong, and that they must stop its effects. The misfortune may also cause indigenous bands to work together to solve upcoming issues. Unity amongst them will only give them more strength. And, although the indigenous groups in Canada are decently separate, this may just be a turning point in their inter-relationships.

A group of Labrador land protectors shut down the Office of Aboriginal Affairs in Happy Valley- Goose Bay early Friday morning as part of ongoing protests against the Muskrat Falls hydro-electric project.
The group blocked employees who showed up to work at 8 a.m. from entering the office for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Aboriginal Affairs, which also houses the local constituency office for the province’s Environment Minister Perry Trimper.
“We need to send a message to government today. Don’t dismiss us…we’ll take action,” land protector Denise Cole can be heard saying on a Facebook live video. “We’re very clear…we’re shutting the Muskrat hydro project down.”
The group has demanded that Trimper resign and that Premier Dwight Ball step down as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

Nalcor’s official website dedicated to the Muskrat Falls project suggests that the construction of an 824 megawatt dam over the Lower Churchill river will provide Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with a clean, renewable energy source. Nalcor claims that the installation of the dam will render the provinces less dependent on other sources of energy, such as oil and fossil fuels as well as create a more self-sufficient economy in the Maritimes. The corporation has been working for 35 years to ensure its promise that the project will be both environmentally and economically friendly.

"Dam removal is becoming an increasingly important topic in European policy and practice because of its potential to address a wide range of environmental, social, and economic issues.
Firstly, dam removal can help to restore natural river systems and their ecological functions. Dams can disrupt the natural flow of water, prevent fish from migrating and spawning, and reduce the availability of habitat for aquatic species. Removing dams can help to restore these functions and create healthier and more diverse ecosystems, which in turn can provide important benefits for people, such as improved water quality and recreational opportunities.
Secondly, dam removal can help to address the impacts of climate change. Rivers are an important part of the global carbon cycle, and dam reservoirs can emit large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Removing dams can reduce these emissions and restore natural processes that help to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Thirdly, dam removal can provide economic benefits, particularly for local communities. Dam removal can create new opportunities for ecotourism and recreation, as well as supporting sustainable fisheries and agriculture. Additionally, removing old or unsafe dams can help to reduce the costs of maintenance and repair, while also reducing the risks of floods and other natural disasters.
In Europe, dam removal is increasingly being recognized as a key tool for achieving a more sustainable and resilient future. Several countries, including the UK, France, and Spain, have already begun to remove dams, and the European Union has recently launched a new initiative aimed at promoting dam removal and river restoration across the continent. With its potential to address a wide range of environmental, social, and economic challenges, dam removal is likely to remain an important topic in European policy and practice for years to come."

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his all-out war on Ukraine almost a year ago, the Kremlin’s long-term plans for imperial expansion have come under closer scrutiny, particularly its use of ‘alternative measures’ to undermine the EU through propaganda and the funding of right-wing Eurosceptic parties in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. But what about the UK?
Though dismissed or ignored at the time, Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee’s 2018 report on disinformation and fake news outlined the impact of the Russian Embassy in London, and state-backed media outlets RT and Sputnik, in supporting the Leave campaigns.
It also revealed the role social media operations such as the Internet Research Agency and the now defunct Cambridge Analytica had in promoting Brexit. A year later, in 2019, Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee concluded in its ‘Russia Report’ that Kremlin interference in elections was the “new normal” and there were “credible attempts” to meddle with the UK’s democratic processes.
For whatever reason, Boris Johnson succeeded in delaying the publication of the Russia Report in the run-up to the 2019 General Election. When – against Johnson’s wishes – it was finally published in July 2020, the report also contained the staggering admission that there had been no official investigation into the potential damage done to our democracy by what was, by then, clearly a hostile foreign power.
Johnson’s apathy over our democratic national security was not new. While Foreign Secretary in 2017, Johnson claimed there was “not a sausage” of evidence of Putin meddling in Brexit, despite his nominal role overseeing GCHQ at the time, which had been working with the FBI’s Special Counsel Robert Mueller on precisely that. Mueller had named Maltese professor Joseph Mifsud as a Russian agent in London. As the Observer and Byline reported, Mifsud met Johnson to talk about Brexit.'
'Evgeny Lebedev was controversially elevated to the House of Lords by Johnson in 2020 – as Baron of Hampton in Richmond upon Thames and Siberia in the Russian Federation. His father, Alexander, a former senior KGB officer, is alleged to have been present when, as Foreign Secretary, Johnson left his security detail behind to travel to the Lebedev’s Umbrian villa following a NATO briefing on the attempted murder of defector Sergei Skripal by Russian military intelligence using the Novichok nerve agent in Salisbury. Johnson denies any official matters were discussed, but Paul Caruana Galizia has reported for Tortoise that Johnson was offered a back-channel to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov.
'With all this evidence of the Kremlin’s close interest in British affairs, not least of all Putin’s public intervention insisting that Theresa May get on with Brexit, Johnson eventually changed his tune by 2022, telling the House of Commons: “I have seen absolutely no evidence of successful Russian interference in any electoral event”.
Given Johnson’s record of equivocal and often mendacious statements, combined with the admission from the intelligence services explicitly that they had never been tasked to investigate these matters, we cannot afford to rely on the former Prime Minister’s word.
In response to this glaring and potentially compromising lack of electoral and national security, a group of parliamentarians took the UK Government to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last March, with the support of campaigning journalism organisation The Citizens. The cross-party group of MPs – including Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, Labour’s Ben Bradshaw and the SNP’s Alyn Smith – claim the Government is infringing our “right to free and fair elections” by failing to act on the findings of the Russia Report.
The court in Strasbourg has now indicated the case both has merit and may be designated an ‘impact case’. It has written to the Government inviting it to respond in detail to the allegations by 26 April.'
'“Following the 2016 EU referendum, but long before the ISC Russia Report, there was a considerable and growing body of evidence that Russia was interested in and acting to disturb Western election processes,” Ricketts continued. “It is a matter of public record that both the U.S. election in 2016 and the French election in 2017 were subject to Russian interference…. Given the evidence that has now amassed of Russian interference, it is important to establish once and for all whether Russia attempted to interfere in the EU Referendum and subsequent UK general elections.” '

Environmental Issues: Muskrat Falls
Nalcor is not being completely transparent when they claim that the installation of the project will be environmentally friendly. Constructing a dam will cause the water levels in the Lower Churchill river to rise. Flooding would likely result in dangerously high levels of mercury being deposited into the river, killing fish, seals and seabirds. This is detrimental to the indigenous people living off the river, as fish are a staple in their diet. The Nunatsiavut First Nation would be primarily impacted by the presence of mercury in the seafood, and would be forced to adopt a different source of protein into their diets. Hollis Yetman, a representative of the Labrador Hunting and Fishing Association, stated that, “I hear there's going to be lots of studying, but there's no one here going to tell you that you're going to be able to eat the fish without methylmercury poisoning in the future," after Nalcor had the project approved (Jan 2013).
Upset with the approval of the Muskrat Falls project, many Nunatsiavut people have spoken up. The Make Muskrat Right campaign was created in November 2015. Supporters of the movement lobbied for the provincial government to fully clean the reservoir. Many members of the public are rallying behind the campaign.
Not only did the Nunatsiavut people conduct Make Muskrat Right, but the Nunatsiavut government also launched a study alongside Harvard University set to research the increase of methyl mercury levels in the water in and around Muskrat Falls. Results from their research showed an increase of mercury levels prior to the beginning of the project, suggesting that the environmental concerns at hand are more serious than previously projected. This is a pressing issue for the Nunatsiavut, the project has more impact on their way of life than any other people. The results of the study were devastating, and the effects of the dam itself will be even more detrimental.
