One Song in Every Language

Okay, tumblr. Let's try something.

I want to make a playlist with one song in every single language. Of course, this is impossible- the spotify playlist limit is something like 5,000- but I want to try. Of course, I can't do this alone, and so I'm sharing the project with the entire online language nerd/ music nerd community. Together we can celebrate linguistic diversity- and find some really cool music :)

Here's how it works. This spreadsheet will document every song and language represented. When you want to add a song, first look in the spreadsheet to see if that language is already represented. If it isn't, add the song to the playlist, and then add it to the spreadsheet.

What counts as a language? This is, as we all know, a fundamentally political question (Russian/ Ukrainian? Hindi/ Urdu? "Chinese" and its "dialects"...) We don't have to solve those debates here. My thinking is: the point is to celebrate linguistic diversity in as many forms as possible. If you can make a reasonable argument for why a song and its linguistic variety should be represented, go ahead and add it.

Yes, this means conlangs count (cause conlangs are SICK!) This also means dead languages count- throw in all the Latin and Classical Nahuatl you like. Glossolalia (à la Sigur Ros) and semi-linguistic scat-esque nonsense (à la Kobaian)? Sure, why not!

I'm calling this one song in every language, but we also want to highlight small and minority languages. So maybe we don't want ten different French songs, but if there are two or three different artists singing in Sami (especially different varieties of Sami), throw it in!

Let's make this awesome. Let's make this huge. Spread it around to every language nerd and music geek you know.

Sant Antoni (Saint Anthony's Day, January 17th and the days leading to it) is one of the biggest traditional holidays in different parts of the Catalan Countries but most importantly in the Balearic Islands. The day is celebrated with bonfires, folk dances and folk theatre that represent Saint Anthony's fight against the demons of temptation, and blessing animals.

In the Balearic Islands, one of the most iconic elements of the holiday is this song. It talks about the holiday and about Saint Anthony and the devil. Different towns have variations of the lyrics, but to give an idea I translated a version under the cut.

Despite the religious origin of festivity, holidays like this are celebrated by all the community, it's not restricted to Catholic believers. For many or most of the people celebrating Sant Antoni, patron saint days (festa major) and similar holidays, it's not celebrated out of religious sentiment but because of tradition, fun and community.

oki so there have been a lot of rambles about the recontextualization of the warriors album to actually be hopeful and be more in favor with grassroots communities and actually giving meaning to struggle and all that - but I admittedly hadn't considered why the source material did not hold these themes in the first place! which led to me thinking about how couple of warrior tumblr peeps here have talked about the historical context of the warriors movie itself and the grassroots communities at the time!

with that I think it is highly important to emphasize here that the warriors film was made in the 70's. this period had also been described as rather bleak in terms of crime rates and the like and the height of new york gangs - so, it is to no wonder that the film took the "Violence Is Wrong All Your Efforts Are Not Worth This" route with the warriors film bros having nothing left but the coney sunrise to appease their tired hearts. That's what the film wanted to convey I presume: that Violence is Hopeless, Peace Is Optimal. Which, is a basic take - a moral take in the most basic of senses, but ultimately conservative in nature.

however, as @threetrenchcoatsinatrenchcoat emphasizes in their rambles, radical means grasping things at the root. so where did lmm and eisa (!!!!!) look to? The story untold about the 70's - a story of gangs being community servants rather than ruffians, wanting more than just the rumble. A story of struggle amidst crime from those among you and those in powder blue. A story that emphasizes why gangs from the marginalized - and the cultural revolution that inspired the main fucking medium in which this story is told - exist in the first place: in the name of resistance, in the name of hope.

That's perhaps the biggest diversion the album now brings to the table in transforming a machismo gang film that's clearly dated into something timeless for it is made with the perspectives of the marginalized in mind, those that most understand that, ultimately, to hope is to resist - something that those up above can never immediately comprehend.
