Out Of Ballet Slippers~

Hi! It's going to take about a week or so for me to get this blog, as well as the Frank Castle, Elliot Stabler, and The Asset's blogs, even close to looking presentable, but oh well, so be it.

I've been in the RPC for about 20 years and in the RPC on Tumblr for about 15, pretty much with my start of things being in Marvel. I do not lack knowledge or experience of most things and for the things I do, I am deeply sorry for trying to flex my memory and failing.

Natalia is actually a new muse to me in more than one way! First off, I actually 99% of the time RP as a male muse, so you can see why this would be different.

And secondly, I have the character Natalia, Natasha Romanoff, as a muse I love and care about deeply but this is my attempt at running full on forwards and falling into this Black Widow's vast history and just adore her.

I do have primary ships, but at the same time, I take the chemistry between the muses and let it speak for itself as well.

I'm slow to reply but I promise you that I'm so much more scared of approaching all of you guys than I seem, haha.

also i still think the number of big name fanon people in the fandom that REALLY hate Iroh when it comes to Azula is a fascinating thing because whenever people talk about the adults in her life failing her, its obvious that Iroh is heavily disliked in those corners for not focusing on Azula as he did Zuko, and there is certainly room for musing over prejudices or biases in Iroh's perspective, a lot of these takes don't really seem into interface with the simple point that:

Azula is Ozai's favorite and there is absolutely no way he is going to allow anyone to try to be a competing influence on his favorite asset and tool; she is nothing more to him and its pretty likely everyone else EXCEPT Azula is aware of this, but it also means that any attempts to provide her thoughts on anything else is going to come crashing down

Azula thinks the world of Ozai and at the young age we see her in Zuko Alone, its pretty clear that she is firmly modeling herself after him and trying to reach out to her with alternative viewpoints is unlikely to have any results other than tipping your hand to Ozai (because he WILL find out if you say anything to her, because she'll just tell him), and this is obvious. It's simply not a move that is worth the risk of directly going against him. 3. You can't rescue someone who doesn't want to be saved. She didn't value his advice or thoughts at all, openly dismissing him as a childish loser for grieving a family member (again; Ozai as her primary role model), and its hard to imagine him doing just about anything to remove her from that environment short of physically kidnapping her, which would only make her resent him more and directly have Ozai in open conflict with him. so the question may be asked; did Iroh just write her off as a lost cause? Possibly. We never actually really see WHAT he thinks of her, besides very evident tension and suppressed anger when she starts breaking his seashell collection, and in turn she is EXTREMELY quick to talk down to him and start shouting at him with very little pretext. Whether or not he DID care about her, if he chose to focus on Zuko in the spirit of 'maybe THIS one is salvagable, if my brother cares so little for him perhaps there may be some hope for reaching out to him'. It may be likely that this is just dynastic Fire Nation politics, with every generation its own mini-civil war of courtly intrigue, assassinations and political camps behind different family members vying for power. Assuming that the situation in Azula and Zuko's generation is typical, it may be that familial love is the outlier among the Fire Nation royal family, and sentimentality or concepts like 'you should love your family, they will definitely NOT stab you in the back at the first opportunity' are deadly weaknesses that will be exploited.

(Also, as far as their interactions Season 2 and onwards go, she DID shoot Iroh with intent to kill and he almost DID die from it. I think any things about being there for her or that she is a child soldier go out the window, given that once a child soldier is actively trying to kill you its reasonable to shoot back or be displeased that they almost killed you. It's not very likely that someone will remain sentimental and go 'oh they're just a kid'. That is not a thing most people tend to do.)

Bio: Like with Excalibur Umbra, It turns out that this Hildryn Warframe was accidentally given sapience. And with this, she escaped to do whatever she wanted. How does she meet her pilot, who functions as her voice and fulfills the same role as Jarvis or Friday does for Iron Man? How did she come across her companion MOA, Nala? Perhaps that’s a story for another day.

Loadout: Primary: Lenz; An experimental Corpus bow that can fire an icy pulse that is an arrow followed quickly by an explosion. With it being a experimental weapon, it has not any safety protocols.

Secondary: Gammacor; Once a mining tool to extract materials for content analysis, this weapon was found its beam was just as potent at disposing enemies.

Melee: Obex; These fist and feet guards multiply the kinetic energy of their respective locations to give devastating punches and kicks respectively.

Companion: Nala the Nychus Moa; a robotic companion created by the Vox Solaris member, Legs, this biped has been with Einrun and Aya through thick and thin and capable of many things when modded to the right occasion.

Hack into consoles with a chance to hack into other robots

leaping at an enemy to send them flying through a shockwave

stomping the ground to provide a similar shockwave

open a dome that slows down enemy projectiles

striking with its powerful legs

deploying a mine that tethers enemies to the ground

increased agility when gliding through the air from a big leap

and shooting out a grenade that reverses gravity in a decent radius, causing all enemies to float in the air

All these things Nala can do but up to two are allowed to be active at any given time. But they can also lay covering fire from a variety of many types of equitable firearms.

Space loadout: Archwing: Itzal; This mechanical jetpack that can be strapped to Einrun’s back was designed to be use in stealth-based combat situations through the use of a grappling hook, a cloak of invisibility, deployable drone assistance, and the power to shoot out black holes to suck in enemies for a massive shockwave.

Arch-guns: Dual Decurion; Designed for deep space combat, these one-handed rifles are high in fire rate and accuracy. Einrun can summon these heavy weapons for bringing their firepower to any planet’s surface.

Arch-melee: Centaur; This weapon that excels at getting face first with any spaceship is a master of defense and offense through the use of its metal plating shield and retractable blade respectively.

Other arsenal assets: Necramech: Voidrig; This mech is something of great value as Cephalon Aya can transer herself into it to fight alongside Einrun on the battlefield. It may not be a fashionable mech, but it can get the job done through its magnitude of explosive weaponry and electrifying shield. This can include grenades that can slow down enemies or cause a fiery explosion, the said electrical shield that protects from melee focused enemies, deployable mines with a decent explosive radius, and a stationary artillery form that fires their signature weapon summon, the Arquebex, te pinnacle of Entrati weaponry.

Necramech Arch-gun: Mausolon; This weapon that was designed by the Entrati was to be used by Necramechs with a primary fire that drains the life force of enemies to charge a secondary fire, a destructive beam that causes an explosion on impact.

By his beloveds, he wants to be seen as gentle and kind, cool and suave, handsome and beautiful -- but most of all, primarily, useful and supportive.

By his coworkers, he wants to be seen as a primary asset - as something that cannot be removed without serious damage to the company, as a necessary part of the machine that works towards their common goal. Yet he wants to be seen as unthreatening all the same. As perhaps clueless or even docile.

By his faithful, he wants to be seen as the hand of God Himself on Azeroth. The Vox Dei, bringing all that is true and none that is false to save them from their existences prior. He wants to be seen as a saviour, to be treated as a king, to have everything done as it should be under his rule.

By other cultists, he wants to remain a threat. A playful guide for those who wish to stray from their particular path, but a strong force for anyone who would try to continue to do evil. A friend and an adversary; a smiling jester brandishing a knife.

Yet things rarely go to plan.

I think there is a great tendency for people to underestimate the capabilities of the field of AI art by extrapolating from particular examples. AI art is an emerging field, and as I sought to express here, we as a society are still in the process of learning what it can accomplish with more or less difficulty. Personally, I see myself as an amateur AI artist, using cheap tools and basic skills to take baby steps into a complex and evolving field. The results tend to be the "easy" kinds of AI art to make, and while I seek to present them in ways that might expand people's ideas of what AI art can be, the resulting images themselves are this art form's equivalent of quick, unrefined sketches.

These types of "AI sketches" are many people's primary familiarity with AI art, and I think that can lead to unfair generalizations about the field's true potential. Compare, for example, to this work by OP, created carefully over the course of 7 hours. The notes contain a number of people appreciating it in spite of saying they otherwise dislike AI art, framing the piece as a unique exception - but I wonder how many other high-effort AI works they might like, given exposure to them. For another example, we can see this post, where AI haters repost a work uncredited because the poster does AI art, not realizing the image was one of their AI art works.

Now, these are still both cases where the artists did not choose every detail of the resulting images themselves. @thecurioustale, you mention disliking roguelikes for this reason. But consider that there are many, many forms of art where that same concern also applies. Photography, for example, or collage. Splatter art, and other forms of randomized art creation. Working with public domain assets, or other premade ones. These may not appeal to everyone, but from a broader perspective, AI art has just as much potential for meaning and status as art as any of those.

Even the act of commissioning another person to draw something means the result is not wholly the product of one or the other, but rather ideas shared and interpreted between them. And this kind of collaboration is part of so many larger artistic projects, which may involve many people! One of my favorite analogies for AI art is that it puts the prompter in the role of a director giving instructions to a team. The director is responsible for shaping the big picture, while many specifics are in the hands of the team.

As for the idea that human creators are doing something fundamentally different from AI, I think it's worth considering this comment by @weaselandfriends, in particular the conclusion:

All this is to say, many modern prose authors, lacking a specific education in creative writing, cannot put academic words to their own talent and return this vision of the Muse. I would contend it is not divine inspiration but instinct that drives them. They have read and seen quality fiction, fiction they admire, and imitate it unconsciously, in a synthesized mass with all the other works they admire, and the output is something that confounds them because the process occurred unconsciously over the course of their lives, rather than beaten into their brains via school. The outcome is that the curtains may be blue, and the author may have simply thought the curtains should be blue, but that does not mean there was no reason why the curtains were blue, regardless of what the author consciously understood or intended.

And this is why your assertion that humans should not take inspiration from copyrighted works does not hold up. All of us subconsciously learn things from any work we encounter, including copyrighted ones, and we could not choose to be free from those influences. My writing certainly takes influence from copyrighted works, and I am sure yours does as well. Those influences can be too subtle to properly trace, but it is the same with those of an AI. The AI is ultimately doing the same thing as humans inherently do, and as Fip said, we do not have to treat humans and AIs as interchangeable in order to recognize that.

What makes me sad about the AI art discourse is how it's so close to hitting something really, really important.

The thing is, while the problem with the models has little to do with IP law...the fact remains that art is often something that's very personal to an artist, so it DOES feel deeply, incredibly fucked up to find the traces of your own art in a place you never approved of, nor even imagined you would need to think about. It feels uncomfortable to find works you drew 10-15 years ago and forgot about, thought nobody but you and your friends cared about, right there as a contributing piece to a dataset. It feels gross. It feels violating. It feels like you, yourself, are being reduced to just a point of data for someone else's consumption, being picked apart for parts-

Now, as someone with some understanding of how AI works, I can acknowledge that as just A Feeling, which doesn't actually reflect how the model works, nor is it an accurate representation of the mindset of...the majority of end users (we can bitch about the worst of them until the cows come home, but that's for other posts).

But as an artist, I can't help but think...wow, there's something kind of powerful to that feeling of disgust, let's use it for good.

Because it doesn't come from nowhere. It's not just petty entitlement. It comes from suddenly realizing how much a faceless entity with no conscience, sprung from a field whose culture enables and rewards some of the worst cruelty humanity has to offer, can "know" about you and your work, and that new things can be built from this compiled knowledge without your consent or even awareness, and that even if you could do something about it legally after the fact (which you can't in this case because archival constitutes fair use, as does statistical analysis of the contents of an archive), you can't stop it from a technical standpoint. It comes from being confronted with the power of technology over something you probably consider deeply intimate and personal, even if it was just something you made for a job. I have to begrudgingly admit that even the most unscrupulous AI users and developers are somewhat useful in this artistic sense, as they act as a demonstration of how easy it is to use that power for evil. Never mind the economic concerns that come with any kind of automation - those only get even more unsettling and terrifying when blended with all of this.

Now stop and realize what OTHER very personal information is out there for robots to compile. Your selfies. Your vacation photos. The blog you kept as a journal when you were 14. Those secrets that you only share with either a therapist or thousands of anonymous strangers online. Who knows if you've been in the background of someone else's photos online? Who knows if you've been posted somewhere without your consent and THAT'S being scraped? Never mind the piles and piles of data that most social media websites and apps collect from every move you make both online and in the physical world. All of this information can be blended and remixed and used to build whatever kind of tool someone finds it useful for, with no complications so long as they don't include your copyrighted material ITSELF.

Does this mortify you? Does it make your blood run cold? Does it make you recoil in terror from the technology that we all use now? Does this radicalize you against invasive datamining? Does this make you want to fight for privacy?

I wish people were more open to sitting with that feeling of fear and disgust and - instead of viciously attacking JUST the thing that brought this uncomfortable fact to their attention - using that feeling in a way that will protect EVERYONE who has to live in the modern, connected world, because the fact is, image synthesis is possibly the LEAST harmful thing to come of this kind of data scraping.

When I look at image synthesis, and consider the ethical implications of how the datasets are compiled, what I hear the model saying to me is,

"Look what someone can do with some of the most intimate details of your life.

You do not own your data.

You do not have the right to disappear.

Everything you've ever posted, everything you've ever shared, everything you've ever curated, you have no control over anymore.

The law as it is cannot protect you from this. It may never be able to without doing far more harm than it prevents.

You and so many others have grown far too comfortable with the internet, as corporations tried to make it look friendlier on the surface while only making it more hostile in reality, and tech expands to only make it more dangerous - sparing no mercy for those things you posted when it was much smaller, and those things were harder to find.

Think about facial recognition and how law enforcement wants to use it with no regard for its false positive rate.

Think about how Facebook was used to arrest a child for seeking to abort her rapist's fetus.

Think about how aggressive datamining and the ad targeting born from it has been used to interfere in elections and empower fascists.

Think about how a fascist has taken over Twitter and keeps leaking your data everywhere.

Think about all of this and be thankful for the shock I have given you, and for the fact that I am one of the least harmful things created from it. Be thankful that despite my potential for abuse, ultimately I only exist to give more people access to the joy of visual art, and be thankful that you can't rip me open and find your specific, personal data inside me - because if you could, someone would use it for far worse than being a smug jerk about the nature of art.

Maybe it wouldn't be YOUR data they would use that way. Maybe it wouldn't be anyone's who you know personally. Your data, after all, is such a small and insignificant part of the set that it wouldn't be missed if it somehow disappeared. But it would be used for great evil.

Never forget that it already has been.

Use this feeling of shock and horror to galvanize you, to secure yourself, to demand your privacy, to fight the encroachment of spyware into every aspect of your life."

Decided to do a write up in case I ever do any combat threads with other muses just so everyone can get a sense of the power scaling. Of course, I’ll be happy to tweak things written here if there’s something needed for a thread. 

Hacker’s Abilities & Knowledge

Expert Programmer Maybe his most valuable asset as it was what he was designed to function as. In his own universe, his skills make him one of, if not the best at what he does. His specialty is cybersecurity. If you have a password or lock, he’s probably already cracked it. Being more technologically advanced than Earth means that even though not everything he finds will be immediately familiar to him, he won’t have much trouble learning it. 

Cyberbugs One of his favorite tools which he breeds aboard the ship. He originally used them to alter digital history at the Cybrary, but has since programmed them to perform a variety of other functions including repairing broken code in his ship’s computer. 

Security Expertise As well as being a cybersecurity expert, he’s pretty handy with physical locks and designs them as a hobby. He has also designed a myriad of traps and privacy features for the Wreaker to keep it safe from intruders. These include the locked door to his on ship laboratory and a electrical grid on the floor of the control room he can used to electrocute unwanted guests.

Extensive Scientific Knowledge He knows quite a bit about science as it applies to Cyberspace, but also quite a bit of Earth science as well. This includes a working knowledge of chemistry which he uses to create acids and toxins for a variety of purposes. He also keeps up with a number of Cyberscience publications and occasionally writes analytical pieces essentially flaming other researchers for subpair work (in the most professional way possible of course). 

Magnetite Something he discovered in his youth and has had a lifelong obsession with researching. Typically has depilating effects on being made of metal although the severity can vary. 

Strength Although not one of his favored ways to approach control, Hacker does have quite a bit of physical strength although perhaps not quite as much as someone knowledgeable might expect from a borg of his size. He was not initially built for strength so his ability in that area will always be somewhat lacking. Still, when compared to a typical human male, he is still quite a bit stronger simply since he is a cyborg. Still, most of the time he will refuse to physically confront anyone out of pride. He sees throwing a punch as an act of desperation so he’ll almost always look for other means. 

Falconry A long time hobby of his. He currently has several birds living aboard the ship who are trained to perform a variety of tasks. he usually them mostly for surveillance, but occasionally they will help him perform small acts of theft.  

Wreaker’s Tools

Electrical Grid Limited to the control room of the Wreaker, but push a button and he can unload high amounts of electricity into an unwanted intruder. 

Theft proof technology The Wreaker is both his home and his primary mode of transportation so he’s installed every measure to ensure it can’t be hijacked.  

Remote controlled robotic arms His favorite feature, a pair of giant robotic arms that fold into the sides of the ship controlled by two remote controls shaped like the grip of a joystick. The controls have a button one end and thousands of little electrical neurons that are responsive to slight moments in his hands. They can direct the arms to do anything typical arms can do but with magnified scale and strength. They pack enough power to rip a building off its foundations. 

Laser canon Takes a little bit to charge up, but once it does produces a high temperature blast that works best on still targets.

Portal Technology After the events of “Change of Art”, Hacker begins to study portals and manages to build one capable of pulling humans from Earth into Cyberspace through the Wreaker’s computer. Because of Motherboard, he can’t use the portal to go to other areas of Cyberspace and as a cyborg is unable to go to Earth through normal means (in the main verse).

- The boys are 2014/2016 Bayverse turtles but are mature adult men. Human age wise they are around 50, but maturity and body wise, somewhere in their 30’s respectively. They do not age the same as humans due to the properties of mutagen and their turtle mutant base type

- This is an AU set several decades into the future- please read the prologue to help understand a little more about the world they live in

- They live in a skyrise, penthouse. With state of the art- Donnie certified level protections put into place. Nothing gets in or out, without his knowing. He does not take the safety of himself or his brothers lightly

- The Boys do not belong to anybody and will not belong to anybody. They are free to interact with whomever they would like, in any way that has been discussed and planned between the two muns.

- They don’t know your muse, nor have had any previous interactions with your muse, and thus are not in love with your muse, or have an established relationship with your muse.

- If you want their love and attention you will have to earn it, just like you would in any other type of interaction

- Absolutely no god-modding. Example: its your 3rd time to respond and you’re attempting to have Leo princess carry your character to bed. This is not a natural flow to the story, and not going to happen.

- The boys may like certain features, or admire certain characteristics, however they are open to all body types, shapes and beings, so long as they feel a connection.

A quick explanation as to what the boys do with their free time in a world that knows they exist.

Due to this we each chose to do what we knew how to do and could most easily adapt as challenges presented themselves.”

He paused for a moment as he thought about the hardships, they had each faced and managed to overcome as they slowly helped right the world and returned her to standing on her own. A shimmering blue jewel among the galaxy and other worlds that had become familiar with the planet and its amenities.

“During our years in the resistance we managed to acquire wealth and assets. We were able to accumulate quite the little nest egg using those. Along with our acquired influence it opened many a door which in the old world would have remained not only closed but permanently locked to us.”

Buying the remnants of properties, businesses and services and either helping them to return to what they once were or repurposing to better suit the needs of this new era and turn a profit. It proved to be very profitable and allowed for me to continue to churn out profits which allowed for me to seek other properties and businesses to invest in or connect the right individuals with each other in away that led to my ability to offer the initial capital for a small percentage of the quarterly earnings. It helped people to create jobs and led to a lot of normalcy for those who desperately needed.

One hand washes the other, and this in its essence has lead to my own sector of the Tartaruga brothers incorporated. I have a multi-billion dollar operation on Earth and several branches operating throughout the universe currently.”

Donnie: “As Leo has said,” Donnie commented calmy, “our time resisting and fighting lead us each to our own talents. I spent a lot of time wearing many hats, which included, chemists, doctor, surgeon, agronomist, engineer, electrician, etc. to put it simply I spent a lot of time learning how to save lives, human and otherwise, and the best way to stretch our available resources in a way which led to people surviving. I also had to learn how to create medications which were so commonplace that many died without having them available. Most antibiotics don’t have a very long shelf life and when those ran out initially, we were in constant jeopardy of losing lives to the simplest of bacterial infections. My knowledge, and subsequent research lead to significant improvements and branching into many other factors, and shall we say break throughs.

Needless to say, the value of others wants, lead to my ability to fund the needs of the many. In my sector, I have several leadings areas including pharmacy, medical research, agrarian development, as well as generalized research and development in multiple fields from domestic to military. For obvious reasons, more detailed information is strictly classified.”

Raph: Raph chuckled as Donnie glossed over his closely guarded research. He was willing to kill to protect his research and continue to control the aspects that allowed him to fund the bulk of his interests and common welfare of those he blanketed with his programs. “They ain’t lying. After the world came back from going to shit, it took awhile to get it back up and going. Additionally, there were a lot of people, generally those not from this world that were way too determined to make sure we failed. This led to a lot of infighting and groups struggling for control. That tends to lead to a lot of shady business if you know what I mean, and it wasn’t like we had any type of social services such as police, fire fighting, or anything else. I initially took charge in areas like these.

I took a lot of care to train groups so that they worked together and were prepared to handle whatever problems came. It took a lot of time to cultivate proper training programs and help prepare people on how to help a traumatized world get back to functioning in a healthy way. I still help do this on planets and areas that are in recovery.”

“That being said however, my primary interest and “job” if you want to call it that, is training mixed martial artist prize fighters for the world federation galaxy league. Simply put we aren’t the only species that likes to watch trained athletes test their skills against one another within their respective brackets, or on specially contracted prized fights. I used to fight for the league and earned a lot of titles and prestige. I won most fights and was often the favorite to win after a while. I’m semi-retired and only occasionally enter the ring now days. However, I take and train promising talents for the league and other groups. I have also trained personal bodyguards for a variety of individuals.  Different specialties come with different specifics and contracts as well as costs. It takes a specific might set for each, and a lot of time to drill into a thick skull.”

Mikey: Mikey laughed at the turtle in red, “Oh yeah, and you were the king of thick skulled back when we were young, and dumb.” He barely dodged the throw pillow that was chucked at his head.  “Let’s see for me personally,” Mikey flashed a big grin, “I happen to be a master of many trades. During our days in the resistance, I learned a lot of different tricks to help make the food rations we had on hand not only palatable but nutritionally sound while feeding a literal army of people! So when it was possible I spent a large amount of time learning how to take fancy old world recipes and revamped them with food sources that were still available or recreated them with off world goodies. I also still paint, and love to collaborate with others to create amazing new concepts!”

His face darkened for a moment as he thought back to the early days of the resistance. “There were so many people who in the blink of an eye had lost everything, and unfortunately it was insanely common to find kids who had either been separated from their families or were the only survivor. In a lot of instances they were traumatized and it took a lot of creative thinking to coax them out of their shells and help to reteach them on how to live. This happened fairly frequently with adults as well. Because of this and what seemed like a never ending shortage of textiles, I had to learn and create new ways to make things and often times help find things that brought the sparkle back to peoples eyes. Because of this however, I have a multimedia conglomerate that allows me to work in a wide area of creative outlets. The fashion world is a flippant mistress, but there are a lot of ways in which one can compete and stand out. It’s led to a lot of lucrative contracts with those who are “starving” for the next amazing piece of creatively, or at least that’s what they tell me. The great thing about taking high end contracts and commissions is that a lot like my brothers, the revenue lets me continue to reach out to others. I fund a program that includes shelters called “Uncle Mikey’s” for those who are missing, exploited, or just need help. I also teach cooking, and practical skills for those who need them, and they are streamed to community centers such as local libraries, after school programs, and the like, to try and continue to help those who never received a chance to learn to do things due to the world kind of going through an apocalypse level event.

There was once a glorious library owned by none other than Shyka the Many, the wisest of the Eldest, who attended to it so dutifully and kept it so rigidly organized that when the Lantern King saw it for the first time, he nearly turned himself inside-out with how hard he began heaving.

“Lighten up a little!” He chided, juggling a pair of blazing scrolls that came ever-so-close to catching an entire shelf afire, “A thousand-thousand of you and not a single one has a sense of humor!” Oh how he laughed as the Many fought to get him out of her precious archives before the whole thing went up in smoke.

“ENOUGH of you, you wicked king!” Shyka cried, finally locking the Lantern King in a glass jar, which she would soon hurl to the bottom of the ocean just to get a few years peace from the cackling conflagration that now whorled in his prison, amused by the whole situation.

“Wicked king?” He mused, before an oh-so-devilish idea struck him. “I’ll show you a wicked king!” And with the snap of his metaphorical fingers, one of the candles that carefully lit Shyka’s archives woke up. Then, as its body began to form from wax and wood, it finally found a voice. It began to scream. “HAH! WICKED! GET IT?” Boomed the Lantern King over the shriek of the awakened candle, and he laughed until the waves of the ocean swallowed his every sound.

Haselfrons’ life began as a joke, and he will never forgive that.

Haselfrons did eventually stop screaming, but it would take many tries for Shyka to discover that they were the reason for the scream; it was not a scream of terror, but of pain. The stories passed about by young Fey and perhaps recounted within children’s books gloss over many important details regarding the creation of the so-called Candle King, the largest being the reason why he began to scream. The Lantern King had, for his own reasons, gifted Haselfrons with a most unique gift: “All that his light shines upon, he shall know.”

But call it a ‘gift’ to the Candle King’s face, and earn yourself a bath of boiling wax at best. Whatever enters the light of Haselfrons’ glowing head is immediately and thoroughly analyzed, every scrap of information that could possibly be divined from the object or person rammed into the forefront of the King’s consciousness like a battering ram crashing through the front gates of an unprepared kingdom. Take, for example, a humble book: not only will the contents of a book be slammed into his mind, but the composition of the paper, the person or place who manufactured the book, exactly what sort of thread and glue went into the bindings, and countless other pieces of meaningless information that he has no use for. The deluge of unwanted understanding is almost always painful and disorienting as he rapidly pushes through the tide to get back on track, and enough information being presented at once can flat-out overwhelm the poor wick’d king and knock him clean out.

It is perhaps understandable that Hazel’s (as Shyka affectionately calls him) general attitude can be summed up as “joyless and unpleasant.” Wracked by constant headaches, Hazel’s impatience with more or less anyone means he tends to lurk in lonely rooms and hallways completely devoid of light but for the gentle flickering gloom of his own head, sulking as he performs his duty: creating new candles and servant spirits for Shyka’s many needs. You’d be surprised how many of both that Shyka and their acolytes go through in their day-to-day duties, but Hazel himself is no slouch in that department either. Leave it to the eerie candle to enjoy the strangeness of rituals.

Hazel found a sort of passion in ritual magic, in the same way that some may take to gardening or building cities out of matchsticks. They were calming for him despite the chaos they could cause, as he enjoyed their structure, admiring their construction as an engineer may marvel at a new and wondrous machine. He’s dedicated time to creating his own as well, seeing just how magic can be bent through the power of ceremony rather than study. More importantly, though, rituals can also be done by just about anyone, which means that people coming to Hazel to learn of them will get what they come for and leave.

There’s little more he wants than to simply be left alone to his duties, working with and learning what he wants to rather than what is forced on him. Anyone who intrudes on his solitude is met with a stern warning of the exact distance they’re allowed to approach; business must be conducted quickly, following his rules exactly, or any meeting with the Candle King ends in ash.

-------- Obedience and Boons --------

Haselfrons has a love/hate relationship with the idea of faith. On one hand, the prayers and pleads for assistance are irritating. On the other, it’s nice to be needed, especially when you were created to be. It scratches an itch that builds in him whenever Shyka is tending to her own business, and knowing he’s helped someone brings him light relief from his otherwise constant headaches. Still, those who decide to pledge themselves to the Candle King will find little kindness or patience granted from their god, especially if they become bold enough to try and seek him out in person. Nightmares find endless inspiration in the ways Hazel has learned to use wax and fire when dealing with any who break his rules, especially his rules regarding personal space. Wicked King, indeed.

The initial reason one may seek him out is for his aforementioned talents; the identification of mysterious artifacts or people is a service he reluctantly offers, his analyzing light an endlessly valuable asset for Shyka and for those who can convince (pay) him enough to put it to use. Seekers of the burning Archfey will also find few creatures better versed in the art of occult rituals, which is perhaps the biggest reason many seek him out in the first place. Those who wish to become his supplicants typically take on the duties of archivists (or the guardians of archives), lore seekers, magical experimenters, construct craftsmen, invokers of spirits and fey, and candle-makers.

Haselfrons demands and expects little from his worshipers, whose primary “duty” is to become skilled enough with the Candle King’s numerous invocations and ceremonies that anyone seeking him out can ask one of them instead and leave him the hell alone. Adventurers in his service are often, as mentioned, lore-seekers hoping to earn faevors from their waxen lord by bringing him new and interesting bits of magic to tinker with, or who put his works into practice in the Material Plane in order to report their findings to him. Making them is fun, but knowing they WORK is one of the scant handful of things in existence that makes Hazel feel joy.

Perhaps the most important duty an adventurer in the service of the Candle King can have, though, is the utter destruction and humiliation of the servants of the Lantern King. Haselfrons demands little, but if an opportunity to absolutely ruin one of the Lantern King’s pranks arises, he’ll go out of his way to get in contact with any servants he has in the area and order them to take the chance. Nothing pleases the wicked king like getting petty revenge against the fool who gave him a cursed life, especially when it ends in the Laughing Lie losing yet another toy or pawn. ... But be warned, the Lantern King may not take such offenses on the chin, and it won’t be Hazel getting the brunt of the retaliatory swing...

Using the Fey Obedience feat, a worshiper of Haselfrons gains certain Boons upon reaching a certain amount of Hit Dice. These Boons are granted at 12HD, 16HD, and 20HD, though the Feysworn Prestige Class allows someone to achieve the Boons much, much sooner. Hazel’s status as an Archfey means he grants very simple Boons; spell-like abilities that may each be cast 1/day.

Obedience: Use a lit candle to burn a book or scroll, or light a fire with a candle and throw at least one book or scroll into it. Once it has turned to ash and cinders, gather some of the burned literature into a small pile, and pour a small amount of wax from the lit candle onto it. Benefit: Gain a +4 sacred or profane bonus on skill checks to cast a ritual.

OK SO I HAVE TOUCHED UPON THIS IN PASSING BEFORE. Saying that a friendship I had to drop before was as a result of the mun getting weird and just stealing everyone else’s muse concepts and ideas and ‘improving’ on them while refusing to acknowledge why the community was upset at them and didn’t want to interact until they changed things. The eventual punchline was them starting a multi with ‘original lore’ that was just them ripping off C*ll of Duty: M*dern W*rfare as a franchise.

But it went so much deeper than that. You have to understand that MW, before the remake games, was pretty sparse on characterization. When I was in the community, pretty much everything was fanon or personal headcanon. Within the RP sphere, everyone’s takes were very personal and not drawn from any serious canonical sources.

So today I bring you a long but also truncated history of..... The Theft Saga.

To start, my friend Tin played a canon villain-turned-hero as he gained a conscience and realized that the new leader of his rebellious faction was a genocidal warlord. That was the canon lore. The fanon she introduced was that this muse and the primary antagonist had history before canon, and were lovers as well as comrades in arms, but eventually had a difference of ideals that caused her muse to switch sides in the eleventh hour. Problem began to play basically the same character but better, with more backstory with the primary antagonist (childhood friends) that made their bond ‘deeper’ than what the antagonist had with Tin’s muse, little bits and bobs like that to try and undermine Tin’s plotting.

It was just juxtaposed enough that you could read it as a narrative foil rather than outright stealing concepts from Tin, but even then a lot of us were kind of side-eyeing the OC as a lighter and softer version of Tin’s canon saying that while the primary antagonist did bad, he wasn’t irredeemable. Which is... a weird hill to die on if anyone knows about the franchise in question.

Which then brings us to the point of the question. Shit that got stolen from me.

My OC Julia was a Russian woman with a tragic backstory who eventually defected to the West shortly after the fall of the USSR and came to work for MI5. Over the course of RP, she became a part of the military faction that opposed the main antagonist, being their liaison and advising them with what knowledge she could glean from her assets and superiors alike. Due to the machinations of RP, she slid down the slippery slope and became a double agent for the primary antagonist and began feeding him intel as well, so soured to the xenophobia she faced as a Russian in a new Cold War that she valued her own survival over loyalty to country or ideals. This eventually led to a romance between Julia and the primary antagonist, as played by a friend. So we have this morally ambiguous, long-suffering woman in military infrastructure undermining it from within while routinely bumping uglies with the main villain.

Wow, Kadi, why would you expand that much about a character you no longer play? Why, so I can show you the startling similarities!

Problem introduces their OC, a Russian woman with a tragic backstory who eventually became a medic in the Russian army. Over the course of RP, it was revealed that she was actually a double agent for the primary antagonist the whole time, and had been a childhood friend of his (sensing a pattern?) who had fallen in love with him in her youth and never let go. She was already at the base of the slippery slope and was a seductive, charming bombshell that ‘just meshed’ with the more theatrical and charismatic primary antagonist. She was soured to the current Russian government for being ‘slaves to the West’ and so sought to see them brought down and a new Russia reborn in the ashes. So we have this morally ambiguous, long-suffering woman in military infrastructure undermining it from within while being the apparent soulmate of the main villain.

She read like a knock-off of Julia which polished off any flaws or unattractive features she had, as Julia was made to be more unsettling than attractive, to make her a more ‘proper’ partner for the villain. Even the FCs favored in general aesthetics -- J*nnifer Connelly as Julia vs L*v Tyler as the rip-off .This was the point that the theft become apparent even to people who weren’t involved based on the messages I got at the time. Unfortunately, it did not stop there.

I played a canon character I interpreted as a flirtatious, sexually liberated military man from afar who was everyone’s best friend and therapist? What a coincidence! They now have an OC who is a flirtatious, sexually liberated military man from afar who is everyone’s best friend and therapist! 

I envisioned a canonical sniper as being of Romani descent and with a complicated relationship with a white parent? Well, now their sniper oc (AS PLAYED BY SEBASTIAN STAN. THE WHITEST WHITE MAN.) is Romani and has a complicated relationship with his family. Replete with dropping a slur OOC and trying to argue it was okay to use bc they were referring to an actual Romani person.

Someone else in fandom played a wholesome, excitable American character who struggled deeply with her time on the battlefield? Oh baby you know the thief had to get on that gravy train.

Tin comes up with a therapist OC to try and keep the walking nest of neuroses that existed on that base from imploding? You’ll never guess what kind of OC the problem dreamt up next :)

They also made a duplicate of the canon I played as bisexual and POC, but made theirs heterosexual and white to be more ‘canon accurate.’ Literally looked at what I was doing with interpreting a character’s model as non-white, looked me dead in the eyes as a queer person, and said the equivalent of ‘eat shit.’ They then proceeded to ship with a friend who shipped their OC with the canon in question and vagued that I must be such a bad ship partner bc I also shipped my muse with another (male) canon character and wasn’t giving ‘his wife’ attention. The biphobia popped off the page, truly. Even ignoring the fact that both of those ships took place in separate universes, so there was no wife for my muse to be ignoring when he was shipping with Tin’s muse.

It was obvious by then that they were trying to make ‘better’ versions of their partner’s characters, who reflected better on the main villainous faction or were less ‘diverse.’ There were clear implications that we were trying too hard or some such, despite the fact most of the community was queer or belonged to other minority communities. What representation we put out was being undermined as trying to be woke and that only the problem was doing this right by not pandering.

They started branching out and stealing from even more roleplayers, and then demanding interaction in the most godmodding way possible. Eventually, the rest of the community put our foot down and demanded they quit their bullshit. They just got real passive aggressive, made a farewell post, then fucked off to the multi where they are sad enough to be ripping off Call of God-Damn Duty like it’s original lore, when each character is cobbled together from other people’s muses.

It’s been almost a decade. I still lose my shit thinking about this. The best part was the primary antagonist Julia shipped with looked at their rip-off’s lore and said outright ‘I never plotted this with you, it doesn’t work for my aromantic muse, I’m not acknowledging any of this, ask before you spring this on your partners.’
