🇪🇸 Besalú fue una villa amurallada durante gran parte de su historia. Las murallas se fueron expandiendo a medida que la población crecía y las necesidades defensivas aumentaban. Las primeras murallas rodeaban solo el castillo y los edificios más cercanos, pero en el siglo XII se construyeron nuevas fortificaciones que incluían la iglesia de Sant Vicenç y el barrio judío. En el siglo XIV, las murallas se ampliaron aún más, llegando a proteger el monasterio de Sant Pere. Sin embargo, en 1814, el ejército napoleónico destruyó gran parte de las murallas tras ocupar la villa, debilitando su capacidad defensiva. A pesar de los cambios urbanos desde entonces, en el casco antiguo todavía se pueden ver vestigios de diferentes épocas.

🇺🇸 Besalú was a walled town for much of its history. The walls expanded as the population grew and defensive needs increased. The earliest walls only surrounded the castle and nearby buildings, but in the 12th century, new fortifications were built to enclose the church of Sant Vicenç and the Jewish quarter. By the 14th century, the walls were further extended to protect the Sant Pere Monastery. However, in 1814, the Napoleonic army, after occupying the town, destroyed much of the walls, stripping Besalú of its defensive capabilities. Despite urban changes since then, remnants of different eras can still be seen in the old town.
