Philippines vs Thailand Badminton Men's Singles Quarterfinals Sea Games 2019
Court Dimensions
It was held at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa, Metro Manila. Badminton singles is played without the side or doubles alleys that extend 1 ft 6 in (0.46 m) on either side of the court.
As such, the boundaries of the singles court is played on a 17 ft x 44 ft (5.18 m x 13.4 m) court space, an area of 748 ft2 (69.49 m2). Each of the lines drawn on a standard badminton court have a thickness of 1.57 in (40 mm).
The badminton court is 13.4m long and 6.1m wide. For singles the court is marked 5.18m wide.
The lines marking out the court are easily distinguishable and coloured white or yellow. The lines are 40mm wide. The back boundary lines also become the long service lines and the posts or the strips of material representing them are placed on the side lines.
The diagonal full length of the full court is 14.366m.
Equipment
Badminton Racket
Modern Badminton Rackets are light in weight and don’t weigh more than 100 grams. The frame of the Racket can be made of common metals like steel or aluminium. Sometimes rackets are made of alloys, tough carbon fiber, ceramic, or boron. Its length does not exceed 680mm and width does not exceed 230 mm.
Shuttlecock
Sixteen feathers fixed in a cork base enveloped in a thin leather sheet make a shuttlecock. Interestingly, the best Badminton Shuttlecocks are made from feathers from the wing of a goose. The shuttle weighs between 4.74 to 5.50 grams.
Badminton Shoes
A good pair of Badminton Shoes provide good grip, cushioning and some flexibility at the forefoot.
Badminton Accessories
Grip
A grip made of cloth or synthetic fiber absorbs sweat and provides you a drier feel.
Badminton Clothes
Comfortable T-shirts and shorts, that don’t hinder your movement are ideal to play Badminton. A white cotton round-neck t-shirt with a pair of red light shorts is what the Philippines wearing while the Thailand is wearing Red collard t-shirt with a pair of black light.
Socks
Wear a pair of thick cotton socks as they help to absorb sweat. They also prevent your feet from slipping inside your shoes. Avoid wearing Nylon socks that don’t absorb sweat.
Wrist Band
If you perspire a lot, you may consider getting a wrist band that prevents your sweat from flowing to your racket handle.
Head Band
Wear a Head Band if you wear spectacles. It prevents your lenses from getting wet and also stops the sweat and hair from getting into your eyes while playing.
Basic Skills
Grip
You will want to learn how to hold your racket with the forehand to hit shuttles on that side of your body and backhand to hit on the opposite side. You will use a forehand grip to hit above your head as well. You can hit the shuttle using a backhand grip with your elbow up or down. It is good to practice hitting with these grips to improve your skills.
Footwork
Your footwork can bring more success to your game if you learn the basics of moving on the court and practice them. Your ready position should include standing in the center of the court if you are playing singles and bending your knees with your body relaxed and waiting for play. Move your feet by shuffling them or gliding from left to right and stepping or lunging forward. To move backward, go fast enough that you get behind the shuttle to hit it hard enough.
Serving
Four types of badminton serves include: 1) the high serve to move your opponent to the back of his or her side of the court; 2) the low serve to make your opponent have to get under the shuttle; 3) the flick serve that is used occasionally to confuse your opponent who thinks you are going to hit a low serve; 4) the drive serve where you hit the shuttle low, fast and to the rear of the receiver's court as a strategy move that will result in a missed hit.
The basic shots
There are so many varieties of shots in Badminton. Variants of shots include slicing the shuttle, tumbling the shuttle or hitting it at different angles with different swings. But they all have one original basic shot. For beginners here is a list of basic shots you should master first.
The serve (forehand or backhand)
The lift (sometimes called a lob)
The net shot
The block
The drop shot
The smash
The clear
Stance
While returning strokes from the opponent, the stance is a crucial skill required in badminton.
Proper posture will allow you to return the opponent’s strokes efficiently and enable you to get an advantage in rallies.
a) Defensive Stance
b) Attacking Stance
c) Net Stance
Technical and Tactical Skills of each team
Philippines – I can see that he has the basic skills that are needed for you to play badminton efficiently, he got the different stance correctly, and footwork but what I can observe is that he’s not really mindful on how strong his attacks are which keeps on getting out or trap in the net.
Thailand – He also has the basic skills that are needed for badminton, he’s a very wise player know what to do next after each blows, he’s not an aggressive player, very agile, and has a good instincts and footwork, he is also mindful of the out blows of the Philippines, I can say that he’s very familiar on what size is the court, he also has different strategy and techniques which leaves the Philippines to be startled.
Rules of the Game
· Scoring System
A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
· Interval and Change of Ends
When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval.
A 2 minute interval between each game is allowed.
In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.
· Singles
At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.
If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.
How to officiate the sport
Umpire: The ‘main judge’ for the particular badminton game. He/she has the power to overrule any decisions made by the service judge or line judges. The umpire is the person ensuring that the badminton game is run smoothly and prevent any players from delaying the game play.
Service Judge: The service judge is responsible in making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to the players.
Line Judges: Line judges sit beside the badminton court (right in front of every in/out lines) to determine whether the shuttle is inside or outside the boundaries of the court.
Analysis
1st set- I can observe that their play does not really exchange blows often, because they are mindful of the other’s attack is out, they both have good footwork, stance, and agility. The Philippines in this set is a very aggressive player he keeps on smashing without being mindful of the height of the net and he’s not taking advantage of the supposed to be out blow from the opponent unlike the Thailand which always score due to that reason, he keeps track if the blow from his opponent is out or not, plus he is a wise player he calculates all his blows/ attack to his opponent either drop shot, smash or net ball which leads him to win in the first set.
2nd set- In the second set the Philippine’s is more mindful of the tactics of the Thailand and also trying to copy it but you can really observe that it’s not what he really used to, I think what he focused in training is the different attacks and blows instead of techniques and strategies, I can also observe that he’s less flexible and agile unlike the Thailand which leads to his loss.

PHILIPPINES vs THAILAND BADMINTON MEN'S SINGLE QUARTER FINALS SEA GAMES 2019
COURT DIMENSION
At the Muntinlupa Sports Complex, there was a badminton battle between Thailand and the Philippines. A measurement of 13.4m long and 6.1m wide is required for the badminton court. The court is designated 5.18 m wide for singles. The lines marking the court are easy to discern and are white or yellow in color. The lines have a width of 40mm. A tribunal can only be marked out for singles. The long service lines have become the back boundary lines and the posts or the material strips representing them are placed on the side lines. The maximum diagonal length of the entire court is 14.366m.
Post
The posts are 1.55m high from the court's surface and when the net is strained, they remain vertical. Regardless of whether singles or doubles are played, the posts are put on the two-side sides. The posts or assists must not reach beyond the side lines into the court. If it is not feasible to have posts on the side lines, by using thin posts or strips of 40 mm wide material, fixed to the side lines and rising vertically to the net cord, some method may be used to show the location of the side lines where they pass under the net.
Net
The depth of the net is 760mm and a minimum of 6.1m deep. At the middle of the court, the top of the net from the surface of the court is 1.524m and 1.55m over the side lines for doubles. There must be no holes between the posts and the ends of the net. The complete depth of the net at the ends is bound to the posts, if necessary.

Badminton Shoes
A good pair of Badminton Shoes provide good grip, cushioning and some flexibility at the forefoot.
Badminton Accessories
The commonly used Badminton Accessories are Grip, Badminton Clothes, Socks, Wrist Band and Head Band.
Grip
A grip made of cloth or synthetic fiber absorbs sweat and provides you a drier feel
Badminton Clothes
Comfortable T-shirts and shorts, that don’t hinder your movement are ideal to play Badminton. A cotton round-neck or a collar t-shirts with a pair of light shorts are usually preferred.
Socks
Wear a pair of thick cotton socks as they help to absorb sweat. They also prevent your feet from slipping inside your shoes. Avoid wearing Nylon socks that don’t absorb sweat.
Wrist Bands
If you perspire a lot, you may consider getting a wrist band that prevents your sweat from flowing to your racket handle.
Head Bands
Wear a Head Band if you wear spectacles. It prevents your lenses from getting wet and also stops the sweat and hair from getting into your eyes while playing.
BASIC SKILLS
Grip – Having a proper grip in badminton is essential since the correct grip will allow you to have more control and will help you dictate where you place your shot.
Serve – This is a necessary skill that is needed to be mastered since having a good serve is like having a high tendency to get points and can give you advantages during the rally.
Footwork – It is a vital skill in badminton. It consists of stepping, crossover, stride, dogtrot, and jumping. Each set of footwork is generally started from the center of the court. It is arguably the essential skill in badminton because it allows players to move efficiently around the pitch while being able to meet and hit the shuttle with proper balance, timing, and technique.
Stance – It is a way on how a player stands when retrieving individual shots from their opponent.
Stroke – It is a skill that a player needs to execute individual shots. This involves the swing motion of a player’s racket arm. Strokes are fundamental to becoming a good badminton player and executing superior shots.
TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL SKILLS
From Thailand. Thailand is portrayed by a great badminton player called Kantaphon Wangcharoen. In the game, he displayed immense technological and tactical abilities. In his attack, he displayed extraordinary badminton forehand shots and also his badminton jump smash is probably the wonderful thing to watch as Kantaphon showed an aesthetic movement from reaching a high point and smashing the racket very hard to let the shuttle cock fly to the opponent like a rocket, making it difficult to counter the attack. In addition, a backhand drop shot was also used by Kantaphon, which helps him because the opponent has a hard time countering his attack.
Philippines. A famous badminton player named Ros Leonard Pedrosa represents the Philippines. With his numerous tactical and technical abilities, he showed his pure ability and talent in the game. He showed some strong defensive abilities that were required to survive the game against Kantaphon's power attacks. In addition, he created an improvement in his range of shots that produced more effective hits due to his satisfactory defensive skills. Ros Leonard is an all-inclusive player who has genuinely played out his heart and shown enthusiasm for his favorite sport. Ros Leonard just had a lack of self-confidence that carried him down and a hindrance towards the game for his progress.
RULES OF THE GAME
A player must wait until his opponent is ready before serving. If the opponent attempts a return then he is ruled having been ready.
The feet of both players must remain in a stationary position until the serve is made. Your feet can not be touching the line at this time.
It is not a fault if you miss the shuttle while serving.
The shuttle cannot be caught and slung with the racket.
A player cannot hold his racket near the net to ward off a downward stroke by his opponent or to interfere with his racket.
Faults
The shuttle, at the instant of being hit is higher than the servers waist or the head of the racket is higher than the servers racket hand.
The shuttle does not land in the correct service court.
The server's feet are not in the service court or if the feet of the receiver are not in the court diagonally opposite the server.
The server steps forward as he/she serves.
Any player balking or feinting his opponent before serve or during serve.
A serve or shot that lands outside the court boundaries, passes under or through the net, touches any other obstructions or a players body or clothing. The boundary and service lines are considered in play.
The shuttle in play is struck before it crosses the net to the striker's side of the net. You may follow through over the net.
A player touching the net or its supports with his body or racket while the shuttle is in play.
Hitting the shuttle twice in succession by a player or team.
Scoring System
A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
Interval and Change of Ends
A 1 minute interval between each game is allowed.
In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.
Singles
At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.
If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.
Doubles
A side has only one ‘set’.
The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the alternate service court.
If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving side.
The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving.
HOW TO OFFICIATE THE GAME
Line Judges
There are four line-judges (two for each side of the court positioned at the baseline) who indicate whether a shuttlecock landed ‘in’ or 'out’ on the line assigned. Hence, they sit beside the badminton court (right in front of every in/out lines) to determine whether the shuttle is inside or outside the boundaries of the court.
Umpire
The main judge for the particular badminton game. The power to countermand any decisions made by the service judge or line judges is in the umpire’s hands. Furthermore, this is the person who guarantees that the badminton game is run smoothly and prevent any players from delaying the game play. Whenever a player requests to change the shuttle, the umpire will need to approve that the change could be made. Moreover, the umpire also looks out for faults committed around the net area such as whether a player touched the net when returning the shuttle.
Service Judge
The role of the service judge is to control the player that is serving in order to ensure that the shot performed is in line with the Laws of Badminton and any other regulation that might be applicable to the specific event. Thus, he/she is responsible in making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to the players.

Philippines vs Thailand Badminton Men's Singles Quarterfinals Sea Games 2019 || A Sports Review
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the game's most common forms are "singles" and "doubles". Today's blog will focus on the game the Philippines vs Thailand Badminton Men's Singles Quarterfinals Sea Games 2019.
youtube
This will consist of the following:
Court Dimensions
Equipment
Basic Skills
Technical and Tactical Skills
Rules of the Game
Officiating the Game
Officiating Hand Signals
Overall Game
Court Dimensions
The game was held at Muntinlupa Sports Complex. The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net. Courts are usually marked for both singles and doubles play, although the laws permit a court to be marked for singles only. The doubles court is wider than the singles court, but both are the same length. The exception, which often confuses newer players, is that the doubles court has shorter serve-length dimensions.
The court's full width is 6.1 meters (20 ft), and in singles, this width is reduced to 5.18 meters (17 ft). The entire length of the court is 13.41 meters (44 ft). The service courts are marked by a center line dividing the court's width by a short service line at a distance of 1.98 meters (6 ft 6 inch) from the net and by the outer side and back boundaries. In doubles, the service court is also marked by a long service line, which is 0.76 meters (2 ft 6 inch) from the back boundary. The net is 1.55 meters (5 ft 1 inch) high at the edges and 1.524 meters (5 ft) high in the center. The net posts are placed over the doubles sidelines, even when singles are played. There is no mention in the Laws of Badminton of a minimum height for the ceiling above the court. Nonetheless, a badminton court will not be suitable if the ceiling is likely to be hit on a high serve.
Equipment
Basic Skills
Grip
This is a way of holding the racket to hit shots during a match. The most commonly used grip is the orthodox forehand grip. Most players change grips during a rally depending on whether it is a forehand, backhand, universal or panhandle shot in the game. It was also seen that both players used this necessary skill since the correct grip will allow the players to have more control and will help dictate where they place their shot.
Serve
Badminton can be performed using two methods (high serve and low serve), depending on where you want the shuttlecock to land. In the game, both of the players used low serve since when a player managed to send an excellent low serve, the opponent would have to dash forward and move under the shuttle to return it. Moreover, this skill is arguably the most important aspect of the game, as it is the one-shot that has to be in every single rally. You have as much time as you need to get ready for it, so there is no excuse for not getting it right.
Footwork
It is a method of moving on the court. Both players used their kind of footwork for them to be quickly gained a point.
Stance
This refers to the way a player stands when retrieving individual shots from their opponent. There are three basic stances in badminton: defensive stance, attacking stance, and net stance. Besides, both players used all the basic stances, and I can say that they did well. This skill is considered a crucial skill required in badminton since a Proper posture will allow you to return the opponent’s strokes efficiently and enable you to get an advantage in rallies.
Stroke
It is the swinging motion of a player’s racket arm. Players need proper strokes to execute individual shots. The power of any badminton shot (clear, smash, drops, etc.) is directly related to how well you can perform your stroke. Strokes are fundamental to becoming a good badminton player and executing superior shots. Broadly categorizing, there are two main kinds of strokes: Forehand shots and Backhand shots. In the game, both players used this to attack and defend at the same time.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Philippines: Like all other athletes, the player representing the Philippines also used all the necessary skills. However, the player tends to over his strength, which leads him to make his shot out of the court. His accuracy was also not so good since there are times that he had a mistake. His stance and footwork were sometimes broken since when he was about to receive, he was occasionally brought down on his knees and was unsuccessfully receive the shuttlecock. I can say the player still need in practice, but despite all the negative things that I have pointed out, there are still positive that the player has played in the game. Even though he still had a big gap with the other team, he did not give up and still played the game well. He used all his tactics and techniques to play against Thailand, and at the same time, he continues to see and learn how the other player will move and play.
Thailand: The player representing Thailand indeed rules the game. All the essential skills that he had used were accurate and sufficient against the other player. Despite the Philippines' defense and offense, he was able to concur with them and fight back. He also learns how the other player will move and attack, which was a good move. Moreover, Thailand's attacks were powerful, which makes the other player a hard time, and this cause Thailand to gain a lot of points. The two sets that they played showed how Thailand win against the Philippines.
Rules of the Game
General Rules
A player must wait until his opponent is ready before serving. If the opponent attempts a return then he is ruled having been ready.
The feet of both players must remain in a stationary position until the serve is made. Your feet can not be touching the line at this time.
It is not a fault if you miss the shuttle while serving.
The shuttle cannot be caught and slung with the racket.
A player cannot hold his racket near the net to ward off a downward stroke by his opponent or to interfere with his racket.
Officiating the Game
Badminton officials play a crucial role in badminton matches. Even though they are not as vital as they can be in other sports such as football or basketball due to the lack of physical contact between players, they still are required to ensure a smooth and fair match. The badminton officials are divided into different roles or positions:
Referees
This official is the most important official of the whole tournament. He or she is in charge of the competition. He or she needs to ensure that the tournament is conducted following the Laws of Badminton (including court, rackets and shuttlecock measurements), the Badminton World Federation regulations and/or any other regulations that might be relevant in that specific competition.
Also, the referee has the last word if there is an argument between the umpire (in charge of the matches) and a player or team. Moreover, the referee makes sure that the facilities and the conditions to play are up to the standards required for that specific tournament. For example, he has to check that the badminton mats are mounted correctly to enhance gameplay. Finally, the referee is also in charge of approving the schedule of matches and practice (if applicable).
Umpire
The umpire is the foremost authority in a particular match, and it is in charge of the court. It is the umpire's responsibility to judge service faults and other player faults. The umpire keeps a record of any misbehavior or incident and reports it to the referee. He/she is also responsible for maintaining the match score, which will be announced after each point of the match. The umpire has control over the specific game but also needs to report any severe acts to the referee, who is, in the end, the leading authority of the tournament. Outside of the major games, the referee will also take an umpire role to help with the process.
Service Judge
The service judge is responsible for making a 'service fault' call and providing shuttles to the players. Due to how badminton is played, the service is one of the most essential and perfected shots of the player and, especially when playing doubles. Players will bring the service to the limit of legality to gain as much advantage as possible. In addition to checking the service, the service judge usually takes care of the shuttles, providing the players with new shuttles whenever required.
Line Judge
The line judges are responsible for indicating whether a shuttlecock landed "in" or "out" if the shuttle lands near the lines he/she is assigned to control. Due to the fast speed of the game and the players' skill, this is a very challenging job, and, as a result, the line judges are the officials that usually get more pressure from the players.
In recent years, an Instant Review System has been implemented to ensure that the right decision is taken, but which also adds pressure to the line judges as it clearly shows when a mistake has taken place. Each player has two incorrect calls per game of the match.
Depending on the tournament level, there may be as many as 10 line judges assigned to a court for a particular match. This is the number recommended by the BWF (Badminton World Federation).
When 10 line judges are available, they are positioned as follows:
2 line judges for the short service line (one on each side of the court)
2 line judges for the center line (one on each end of the court)
4 line judges for the side lines (two on each side of the court). Please note that the exact location will depend on whether a singles match is being played (and they would follow the singles side lines) or a doubles match is being played (and they would follow the doubles side lines
2 line judges for the back boundary lines (one each end of the court). Please note that, in the case of the doubles match, these line judges check both the back boundary line and the long service line.
Officiating Hand Signals
Undue Delay of Service
When undue delays occur the service judge will swing their right arm to the left to indicate that a player has been penalized for undue delay.
Feet on the Service Line or off the Ground
When the aforementioned breaches occur the service judge will stretch out their right leg and signal a fault with their right hand because a player’s feet were off the ground or they were on the boundary line.
Server Fails to Hit the Bottom of the Shuttlecock
The line judge will open their right hand and lightly touch the palm with their left hand to indicate a service fault.
Service Too High
If the racket is too high when the serve is made, the service judge will place their right hand horizontally across their ribs.
Racket Handle Should Face Up
If the racket handle is facing up when the shuttlecock is hit the service judge will lift up their open hand with palm facing out to indicate a fault due to the racket handle facing up.
Shuttlecock Lands Out the Line
If the shuttlecock lands out of bounds the line judge must loudly and quickly shout “Out” so that both players and spectators hear, and will stretch their arms out to the side level with each other while looking at the umpire with a fixed stare to ensure the umpire is clear about the decision.
The Shuttlecock Lands Inside the Line
If the shuttlecock lands inside the line, no announcement is needed, the line judge will just point their right hand at the line.
If the Line Judge Does Not See
If the line judge can’t see the shuttlecock clearly (because their view is blocked by a player’s body or other unavoidable situation), as they were unable to see whether the shuttlecock landed in or out they should cover the eyes with their hands to let the umpire know.
Overall Game
All in all, the game was fun and entertaining. Both players did well and showed what they got. The two used all the necessary skills, techniques and tactics to win the game. However, there is always a winner in a game, and Thailand really shows how dominant the player is in playing against the Philippines. It shows a vast gap between the scores, consisting of sets 1 and 2 having the same score of 21- 11. Therefore, this ends the game in favor of Thailand.

Philippines vs Thailand Badminton Men's Singles Quarterfinals Sea Games 2019 (Sport Performance Analysis)
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
The fiery game between the two representatives for Philippines and Thailand in the Badminton Men's Singles Quarterfinals Sea Games 2019 happened on December 9 at Muntinlupa Sports Complex, Metro Manila, Philippines. Apparently, Thailand has attained triumph with 21-11 in the very end.
Court Dimensions
As mentioned, the scorching game took place at Muntinlupa Sports Complex, Metro Manila, Philippines. Shrinking by 1.5’ (.46 m), its court dimension is reduced to 17’ (5.18 m). Moreover, service courts are split by a center line which divides the width of the court, and are supposed to set back from the net by a ‘short service line’ of 6.5’ (1.98 m). In addition, doubles games also require a ‘long service line’ that is placed 2.5’ (.76 m) in from the back boundary. Lastly, clearances of 2’ (.61 m) should provide around the entire badminton court.
Equipment
1. Badminton Net - is the central gameplay element in a game of Badminton, requiring players to return the shuttlecock from one side of the court to the other during the match.
2. Badminton Rackets - is a sports implement consisting of a handled frame with an open hoop across which a network of strings or catgut is stretched tightly.
3. Shuttlecock - is a high-drag projectile, with an open conical shape. The cone is formed from sixteen overlapping feathers embedded into a rounded cork base.
4. Uniform - consists of comfortable shirts and shorts that don't hinder your movement are ideal to play the sport. A cotton round-neck or collar shirts with a pair of light shorts are usually preferred.
5. Badminton Shoes - are lightweight with soles of rubber or similar high-grip, non-marking materials.
6. Wristbands - is an encircling strip worn on the wrist or lower forearm, and it helps in preventing the sweat flowing to the handle of the racket.
7. Headband - is a clothing accessory worn in the hair or around the forehead, usually to hold hair away from the face or eyes, and it helps the sweat from getting into your eyes.
8. Socks - garment for the foot and lower part of the leg, typically knitted from wool, cotton, or nylon.
9. Water Bottle - is a container that is used to hold water, liquids or other beverages for consumption.
10. Towel grips - are for people that sweat a bit more on their hands. It'll absorb the sweat so your racket won't fly out of your hand when you clear.
Basic Skills
Having enough knowledge about the basic skills of any sports beforehand is very essential. Without knowing these, one wouldn’t be able to play the sport accurately, and it could even hinder the player to not be able to become better at the sport. Hence, down below are the following basic skills in badminton:
Grip. This is a way of holding the racket in order to hit shots during a match. A good badminton game starts with how you hold your racket which is the most important basic step. A good grip on badminton rackets can reduce injuries, increase the range of shots and produces more efficient hits. Hence, these are some examples of grip: forehand grip, backhand grip, universal grip, and panhandle grip. Firstly, forehand grip which is described as anything on your racquet side whether it be overarm or underarm. Secondly, backhand grip which is described as anything to your non-racket side whether it be overarm of underarm. Thirdly, universal grip which is a type of backhand grip where your thumb has moved to the edge of the fatter face of your grip. This is used for backhand cross-court net shots, backhand clears, and backhand straight drop shots from the rear court. Lastly, panhandle grip in which where your thumb and the finger pinch the top of the racket in order to tap/net-kill the incoming shuttlecock.
Serve. A good serve is likely to get you points and may give you some advantage during the rally. These are the two types of services: high serve and low serve. Firstly, high serve is used when you want to force your opponent to run to the back of the court by hitting the shuttlecock toward the rear end of the court. Secondly, low serve is used to bring the opponent forward by hitting the shuttlecock toward the front of the court.
Footwork. This is another essential skill for badminton. With proper footwork, you will be able to conserve energy and face shots coming toward you from any direction. Moreover, an effective and organized footwork provides superb speed and agility which enables the player to move around the badminton court swiftly and return every shuttlecock.
Stance. This is a crucial skill required in badminton. Hence, proper posture allows you to return the opponent’s strokes efficiently and enable you to get an advantage in rallies. These are the basic stances in badminton: defensive stance, attacking stance, and net stance. Firstly, defensive stance is used to retrieve your opponent's smash. Secondly, attacking stance allows you to return a short or high lift from your opponent. Lastly, net stance is wherein you place your racket foot forward; non-racket foot at the back. Place your racket in front of your body, slightly above waist height.
Strokes. This is the swing motion of our racket arm. These are fundamental to becoming a good badminton player and executing superior shots. These are the two main kinds of strokes: forehand shots and backhand shots. Firstly, forehand shots should be played when the shuttlecock is on your racket side. Secondly, backhand shots should be played when the shuttlecock is on your non-racket side with your thumb controlling the strokes.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Thailand. Kantaphon Wangcharoen represented his very own country, Thailand. This player, indeed, has some astounding technical and tactical skills. As observed, he utilized greatly the badminton forehand shots, however, amongst all of them, his badminton jump smash is probably the most exceptional to see. I’ve already seen numerous skillful badminton players who’ve mastered the said skill, but this player stands out the most amongst them. The way he shoots from a high point and travels down steeply towards his opponent is just spectacular. This skill has been used by the player mainly for his attacking, and has served as his winning shot in the game. Moreover, he also used backhand drop shot which has powerfully countered his opponents’ attacks, immensely aiding to his own triumph.
Philippines. Ros Leonard Pedrosa represented his very own homeland, the Philippines. Although he lost to Thailand, it is still inevitable that this player also has some astonishing technical and tactical skills that deserve to be recognized more. As observed, he utilized defensive skills which have been very essential in his survival in the game despite of being under attacked by his opponent. Moreover, his gripping technique is also exceptional. Obviously, it helps him in increasing the range of shots and producing more efficient hits. Overall, he is a really good badminton player, however, he tends to be very tensed and nervous while playing to the point that it holds back his full power from showcasing, probably the reason as to why he lost.
Rules of the Game
In every sport, having rules is crucial since it provides an agreement of understanding to competition. They define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the court. Thus, down below are the following rules every player should follow in badminton:
Scoring System
1. A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
2. Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
3. The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
4. At 20 all, the side which gains a 2-point lead first, wins that game.
5. At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
6. The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
7. Interval and Change of Ends
8. When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval.
9. A 2-minute interval between each game is allowed.
10. In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.
Singles
1. At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
2. If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.
3. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.
Doubles
1. A side has only one ‘set’.
2. The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
3. At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
4. If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the alternate service court.
5. If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving side.
6. The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving.
Officiating the Sport
As a known fact, officials in a sport hold a very crucial role in the staging of competitions. They furnish leadership and guidance to participants, ensuring that the competition is conducted in a safe and fair manner. Furthermore, officiating offers an individual the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and to hone one's judgment skills. Thus, down below are the following officials in badminton:
Umpire.
Service Judge. The role of the service judge is to control the player that is serving in order to ensure that the shot performed is in line with the Laws of Badminton and any other regulation that might be applicable to the specific event. Thus, he/she is responsible in making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to the players.
Line Judges. There are four line-judges (two for each side of the court positioned at the baseline) who indicate whether a shuttlecock landed 'in' or 'out' on the line assigned. Hence, they sit beside the badminton court (right in front of every in/out lines) to determine whether the shuttle is inside or outside the boundaries of the court.

Manny Pacquiao
Emmanuel "Manny" Dapidran Pacquiao, PLH (/ˈpæki.aʊ/ PAK-ee-ow; Tagalog: [pɐkˈjaʊ];[4] born December 17, 1978) is a Filipino professional boxer and politician. He is the first and only eight-division world champion,[5] in which he has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes.[6] He is also the second highest paid athlete in the world.[7][8]He was named "Fighter of the Decade" for the 2000s (decade) by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). He is also a three-time The Ring and BWAA "Fighter of the Year," winning the award in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2009 and 2011.[9]
He was long rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by some sporting news and boxing websites, including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Sporting Life, Yahoo! Sports, About.com, BoxRec and The Ring.[10][11] In April 2012, Pacquiao dropped to number two in the rankings, behind Floyd Mayweather, Jr.[12] He is currently ranked number seven on The Ring pound for pound list.[13]Aside from boxing, Pacquiao has participated in acting, music recording and politics. In May 2010, Pacquiao was elected to the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress of the Philippines, representing the province of Sarangani
Personal life
Pacquiao was born on December 17, 1978, in Kibawe, Bukidnon, Philippines. He is the son of Rosalio Pacquiao and Dionesia Dapidran-Pacquiao.[15] His parents separated when he was in sixth grade, after his mother discovered that his father was living with another woman.[15] He is the fourth among six siblings: Liza Silvestre-Onding and Domingo Silvestre (from first husband of his mother) and Isidra Pacquiao-Paglinawan, Alberto "Bobby" Pacquiao and Rogelio Pacquiao. Pacquiao is married to Maria Geraldine "Jinkee" Jamora,[16] and they have four children: Emmanuel Jr. "Jimuel", Michael, Princess, and Queen Elizabeth "Queenie." He resides in his hometown General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines.[17] However, as a congressman of lone district of Sarangani, he is officially residing in Kiamba, Sarangani, the hometown of his wife.
Pacquiao was a devout Roman Catholic.[18] Within the ring, he frequently makes the sign of the cross and every time he comes back from a successful fight abroad, he attends a thanksgiving Mass in Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila to kneel and pray. Following his defeat by Juan Manuel Márquez, his mother condemned him leaving the Catholic church. Pastor Jeric Sorino, Pacquiao's spiritual adviser, comes from the Alabang New Life Christian Center in Muntinlupa.[19]Pacquiao is also a military reservist with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army.[20] Prior to being commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he first entered the Army's reserve force on April 27, 2006 as a Sergeant. Later, he rose to Technical Sergeant on December 1 of the same year. On October 7, 2007, he became a Master Sergeant, the highest rank in the enlisted personnel. On May 4, 2009, he was given the special rank of Senior Master Sergeant and was also designated as the Command Sergeant Major of the 15th Ready Reserve Division.[21]
Education
Pacquiao completed his elementary education at Saavedra Saway Elementary School in General Santos City, but dropped out of high school due to extreme poverty.[22] He left his home at age 14 because his mother, who had six children, was not making enough money to support her family.[22]In February 2007 he took, and passed, a high school equivalency exam making him eligible for college education.[23] He was awarded with a high school diploma by the Department of Education. Pacquiao enrolled for a college degree in business management at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) in his hometown in General Santos City.
On February 18, 2009, Pacquiao was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities (Honoris Causa) by Southwestern University (SWU) at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino in Lahug, Cebu City in recognition of his boxing achievements and humanitarian work.[24]In preparation for his career as a lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Pacquiao enrolled in the Certificate Course in Development, Legislation and Governance at the Development Academy of the Philippines – Graduate School of Public and Development Management (DAP-GSPDM).[25]
Amateur boxing career
At the age of 14, Pacquiao moved to Manila and lived, for a time, on the streets. He started boxing and made the Philippine national amateur boxing team where his room and board were paid for by the government. Pacquiao reportedly had an amateur record of 64 fights (60–4).[26]
Professional boxing career
Light Flyweight
In 1995, the death of a young aspiring boxer and close friend, Eugene Barutag, spurred the young Pacquiao to pursue a professional boxing career.[27] Pacquiao started his professional boxing career when he was just 16 years old, stood at 4'11'' and weighed 98 pounds (7 pounds under the minimumweight division). He admitted before American media that he put weights in his pockets to make the 105-pound weight limit.[28] His early light flyweight division fights took place in small local venues and were shown on Vintage Sports' Blow by Blow, an evening boxing show. His professional debut was a four-round bout against Edmund "Enting" Ignacio, on January 22, 1995, which Pacquiao won via decision, becoming an instant star of the program. Pacquiao's weight increased from 106 to 113 pounds before losing in his 12th bout against Rustico Torrecampo via a third-round knockout. Pacquiao failed to make the required weight, so he was forced to use heavier gloves than Torrecampo, thereby putting him at a disadvantage.[29]
Flyweight
Following the Torrecampo fight, Pacquiao continued undefeated for his next 15 fights. He went on another unbeaten run that saw him take on the more experienced Chokchai Chockvivat in flyweight division. Pacquiao knocked out Chockvivat in the fifth round and took the OPBF Flyweight title.[30] After one official defense and two non-title bouts, Pacquiao got his first opportunity to fight for a world title.
Pacquiao vs. Sasakul
Pacquiao captured the Lineal and WBC Flyweight titles (his first major boxing world title) over Chatchai Sasakul by way of knockout in the eighth round. He defended the titles successfully against Mexican Gabriel Mira via a fourth-round technical knockout. However, Pacquiao lost the Lineal title in his second defense against Medgoen Singsurat, also known as Medgoen 3K Battery, via a third-round knockout. The bout was held in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Singsurat got Pacquiao on the ropes and landed a flush straight right to the body, coiling Pacquiao over and keeping him there. Pacquiao lost the WBC title at the scales, as he surpassed the weight limit of 112 pounds.
Super Bantamweight
Following his loss to Singsurat, Pacquiao gained weight and skipped the super flyweight and bantamweight divisions. This time, Pacquiao went to super bantamweight, or junior featherweight, division of 122 pounds, where he picked up the WBC International Super Bantamweight title. He defended this title five times before his chance for a world title fight came.
Pacquiao vs. Ledwaba
Pacquiao's big break came on June 23, 2001, against IBF Super Bantamweight title holder Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. Pacquiao stepped into the fight as a late replacement on two weeks' notice but won the fight by technical knockout to win the title, his second major boxing world title. The bout was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao went on to defend this title four times under head trainer Freddie Roach, owner of the famous Wild Card Gym in West Hollywood.
Featherweight
Pacquiao vs. Barrera I
On November 15, 2003, Pacquiao faced Marco Antonio Barrera at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, in a fight that many consider to have defined his career. Pacquiao, who was fighting at featherweight for the first time, brought his power with him and defeated Barrera via technical knockout in the eleventh round, the only knockout loss in Barrera's career, and won the Lineal & The Ring Featherweight Championship, making him the first Filipino and Asian to become a three-division world champion, a fighter who won world titles in three different weight divisions. He defended the title twice before relinquishing it in 2005.[31]
On November 24, 2003, the then Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo conferred on Pacquiao the Presidential Medal of Merit at the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañan Palace for his knockout victory over the best featherweight boxer of the world. The following day, the members of the House of Representatives of the Philippines presented the House Resolution No. 765, authored by the then House Speaker Jose De Venecia and Bukidnon Representative Juan Miguel Zubiri, which honored Pacquiao the Congressional Medal of Achievement for his exceptional achievements. Pacquiao is the first sportsman to receive such an honor from the House of Representatives.[32][33]
Pacquiao vs. Marquez I
Six months after the fight with Barrera, Pacquiao went on to challenge Juan Manuel Márquez, who at the time held both the WBA and IBF Featherweight titles. The fight took place at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, on May 8, 2004. In the first round, Márquez was caught cold, as he was knocked down three times by Pacquiao. However, Márquez showed great heart to recover from the early knockdowns and went on to win the majority of rounds thereafter. This was largely due to Márquez's counterpunch style, which he managed to effectively utilize against the aggressive style of Pacquiao. At the end of a very close fight, both boxers felt they had done enough to win the fight. The bout was scored a draw, which proved to be a controversial decision.[34]
The final scores were 115–110 for Márquez, 115–110 for Pacquiao and 113–113.[34] The judge who scored the bout 113–113 admitted to making an error on the scorecards, having scored the first round as 10–7 in favor of Pacquiao instead of the standard 10–6 for a three-knockdown round. If he had scored the round 10–6 for Pacquiao (as the other two judges did), the result would have been a split decision in favor of Pacquiao.[34] However most pundits scored the fight to Marquez [35][not in citation given].[14]

DAVAO CITY – Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight champion Victorio “Vicious” Saludar of Polomolok, South Cotabato, will fight undefeated Robert “Inggo” Paradero of Malaybalay City on Dec. 5 at the Flash Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque City. In his third title defense for the WBO world title, Saludar lost to Wilfredo Mendez of Puerto Rico by a unanimous decision in Puerto Rico on Aug. 24. Paradero (18W-0L, 12KO), on the other hand, stopped Jonathan Almacen of Muntinlupa in the first round on April 5 in Malaybalay. In 2018, the 24-year-old Paradero defeated Royder Lloyd Borbon of Cotabato by a unanimous decision to win the WBO Asia Pacific Youth minimumweight title in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. “The Saludar versus Paradero 12-round title fight will be a closed-door event,” said promoter Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde of Elorde International Productions.
