Rimasuu
Lemmen, besides being part of the National Park of the “Cinque Terre” (the Five Lands), is also part of the territory of the Municipality of Riomaggiore - or Rimasùu, as it is known in the local dialect. Riomaggiore is the first town after leaving La Spezia and has about 1500 inhabitants. Its name comes from Rivus Maior, one of the two torrents that flow down to the town. The old town was built around the little seaport, with “tower houses” leading up in parallel terraces connected by countless steps and little streets up to the castle, which was built in 1200 to defend the town and today provides superb views.
Mooring for the boats has a purely “urban” focus. Riomaggiore is, in truth, a town of farming origins and traditions and not seafaring ones. The inhabitants have for centuries been winegrowers on the surrounding mountains, from which they managed to wrench strips of land contained by dry stone walls built with great skill and care.
Today, difficult growing conditions result in more and more land being abandoned and fewer and fewer vineyards are productive.
On the other hand, crowds of tourists, attracted by the beauty of the places, fill the town, while others enjoy trekking along the numerous paths that lead up to the peaks or down to the sea.

🇺🇸🥾⚒️Over the past several years, with a group of other volunteers from Manarola, we have recovered over 10 km of abandoned trails within the municipality of Riomaggiore. We’ve given the name “Monte le Croci Trail Park” to this network. Some of these trails were part of historic commercial transportation routes, others were used to get to and from farmland and forest plots. The trails are unmarked, but can be found on Openstreetmap.org and the various Apps that use this open source, and additional details about each trail can be found in our newsletter archive (link in bio). The stone stairs and the dry stone walls enclosing them on Trail N. 501 from Riomaggiore are works of art, and thanks to work by the Municipality of Riomaggiore and more recently by the all new, much-needed @parcocinqueterre trail maintenance crew, they are in better condition now then they have been for years. This trail and all of the other trails in the park should look this good all year, so we hope that this is just the beginning of a serious and continued investment in this fundamental infrastructure and resource for our local economy. Trail N. 501 will be featured in next week’s edition of our newsletter.
