Worship workshop
I had another group of lovely people today for the workshop in Mundika. Once again there were some familiar faces, and it’s always lovely to have a reunion. It seemed considerably warmer at this location, so in the afternoon we all moved out and met under the trees. It was quite interesting getting amens from the local rooster. My interpreter, Erina, is such a faithful servant, she’s taking time off work, has night classes and three children to look after, and today was just a little bit too much after a busy weekend of classes and study. Once again this group can sing so beautifully and so naturally. Erina, one of the worship leaders and I had our own little time of worship around the keyboard. We had purchased a sustain pedal for this church where we are meeting, and it makes quite a bit of difference in the overall sound of the accompaniment. May the Lord bless these dear servants of the Lord and His people. All the best, D

Education Emancipates an Individual  & Empowers him Like Anything
KISS is the world’s largest residential tribal University, home to thirty thousand indigenous students who are provided nutrition, holistic formal & vocational education from KG to PG free of cost. It was established in 1992-93 by renowned educationist & social activist Dr. Achyuta Samanta. Further, it is the embodiment of empowerment of the marginalized, underprivileged group of students who have become change agents for their communities by providing emancipation from acute poverty through education.
Tumblr media
This is a  moving story of  Balabhadra Mundaka, a KIISIAN whose life has taken a "U' turn after he joined KISS. He belongs to the Kandha tribe from the village Kumbia of the Bisam Cuttack Block in Rayagada district. His family consists of his parents Pulu Mundika & Laki Mundika  & six siblings. The family often found it hard enough to make both ends meet. The acute poverty had led to domestic violence & the victim was the poor mother of Badabhadra. Education was a far cry for the children when arranging two square meals a day was a distant dream for the family. The eldest son had to drop out of school in class five. Two of his brothers could never even had the opportunity of primary education. The other brother was rather lucky enough to have a little advantage of education & he got Badabhadra admitted to KISS in class two in 2011. Though reluctant, ultimately Badabhadra's parents agreed to it. Badabhadra also could not cope up with the environment at KISS in the early days. He was ultimately persuaded & motivated by his brother to continue with his studies. His brother had to discontinue his MCA studies due to  paucity of funds & started working as a mason. This made Balabhadra determined to realize the opportunity given to him by his brother & become successful. He has done well in his studies & has scored well in all the classes up to class -X-. Even he has cracked the NTSE examination at the state level with -112- rank. He owes his success to KISS & Prof. Samanta. Had it not been for KISS, he would have also dropped out of school due to the financial problems haunting his family.
He says, that KISS has become the safe shelter house for many poor indigenous children like him.  He understands the pangs of despair in his other brother's psyche, who was forced to leave studies midway due to lack of funds. He is determined to do well in the class-X examination with the blessings of  Prof. Samanta. He hopes to join the IAS in future through the Civil services examination. He also plans to open a school like KISS in his locality, where poor children can build their future by studying hard.
Because of KISS, Balabhadra is slowing but surely moving in the path of progress. He is also getting opportunities to develop his traditional art, craft in addition to formal education. He has become an icon of hope for the children of his community.
In terms of Population, the scheduled tribe population constitutes 22.8% of the total population of Odisha as per the 2021 Census.
The  Kandha  community isnumerically the largest tribe of Odisha distributed in southern Odisha forming several endogamous territorial sections. The Kandha villages have linear settlement pattern, Jarkhiri, the altar of their earth goddess. They are worshippers of the nature. They worship the erath, mountain, streams & the rain God. The major occupation being settled & shifting cultivation, animal husbandry, hunting & forest collection.
Education is a great catalyst of change. More so in a marginalized society, it can act as a pathway to break the chain of poverty, illiteracy & hunger. Even after -75 years of freedom & actions taken by successive governments, we are yet to remove this scourge from society. In Odisha, with a predominantly tribal population, KISS is pioneering the change in a big way. The sustainable development agenda of the UNO finds a reliable partner in KISS & its programmes.

Day 17
Our 2nd conference started today at quite a new large and well decorated church called Transformations near Mundika. The church of Alberts. We also had a tent for the woman's ministry and one for the medical camp set up next to it. Our team had a great day today. Things were organised pretty well and a lot of ministry took place. One of the more serious medical cases was a pastor who while riding a motorbike some 2 years ago was hit by a bus and sustained fractures to his leg and upper arm which to this day have not healed well and he needs further orthopedic surgery and a bone graft. We will see if we can find someone to help him. Today Tom, Ben and me went to 3 primary and 2 secondary schools and met some lovely students. One of our AIDex girls is part of a singing group in her school that has made it to a national competition level. Tomorrow we meet widows and have a medical camp for them. Please pray that we can see all the needy cases in an orderly way. Russell
