WILL DISNEY EVER PULL-OFF A GOOD LIVE-ACTION MOVIE?
written by: Pranxis
Since Mulan's announcement, I have been in such anticipation. I was full of excitement. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney classic movies ever! I had doubts of course when everyone's literally getting disappointed every Disney Live-Action adaptation. Even me.
The day Mulan came out on Disney Plus, it got leaked on Facebook and I get to watch it early without paying 30$ for it. Everyone's reviews has been negative so far despite Rotten Tomatoes' fresh reviews, I think 70. I guess it was a great idea not to pay that much if you want to watch Mulan 'cause once again, Disney failed to make me appreciate their Live-Action adaptations. Just like 'The Lion King' and 'Aladdin', Mulan doesn't offer anything good. Just AVERAGE!
I can confidently say once again, the original films Disney made was much better than their Live-Action adaptations.
First off, the adaptation is not being loyal to the source material. I meant the classic Mulan one. The movie. There was literally no singing! No mushu! The scene where Mulan was about to make the 'life or death' decision she ought to do in the original film and her, cutting her hair with the sword was not in the film. There's more to mention actually but I'll just state the ones' that are extremely essential. I was disappointed!
They cut-off too much memorable scenes to the original film and change some of it or lessen it. The dialogues was too short! After each conversation, it immediately takes us to another setting!
I biggest problem I have with this movie is that, IT MOVES SO DAMN FAST! The plot moves as if it wants to reach it's climax quickly. The way the plot moves is like it was too excited to show us the battle scenes quickly. Which Disney thinks is one of the highlight of the film. It was disappointing actually that's why I got distracted by the time I was watching the film.
And also, I hate the English dialogues in the film. It was CRINGE-WORTHY! How I wish Disney just make the Chinese actors speak Chinese instead of forcing them to speak English. WE CAN READ SUBTITLES YOU KNOW?
One of the biggest problem I have with this film also have to deal with me, not being able to be emotionally attached to the story and the characters like how the original one did to me. This film is so empty. I don't feel anything nor connected to it.
One thing I'm annoyed about as well is that, Mulan had too little motivation for her character development. Seriously, during that 'Mulan vs The Witch' fight, the witch literally just had a cliched dialogue and when Mulan lost to her, she suddenly became the Fierce, the Loyal, Brave and True. Y'all have no idea how I laughed during that damn scene!
Also, her motivation to sacrifice for her family was too little. The original, classic one did a fantastic job of portraying Mulan's decision for her family. It was phenomenal and emotional. The film didn't have any of that. The moment Mulan decides to leave in this film, it just transitioned into her riding off a damn horse away from home. That was it. Maybe except the scene where Mulan prayed to her ancestors. But still though...
I totally understand the approach Disney and the Director of this film is trying to do. They were trying to make the live-action Mulan a realistic one. No singing! No fantasy stuff. They were trying to be loyal instead to the original source material which is the classic Chinese Mulan story instead of the Disney one. I get it!
But, I am still disappointed!
If I could brag anything about the positives in the film, it would be: The action scenes, the damn visuals of the film was top-notch, and the battle scenes were quite good. That's all.
Overall, Mulan is average. It's not that bad, it's not that good either.
I would rate Mulan a 5 / 10 👍
The classic Mulan Disney movie will always remain a phenomenal one. No adaptations can replace it! Period!
