Washington MS R2: Gael Monfils [WC] def. Alexander Bublik [6] 6-3, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸 Tennis TV
Bublik almost had his moments in the second set, but Monfils eventually stood his ground and regained his rhythm back, especially knowing how responsive his defenses were. To add, his service games also carried some of the most important moments, hence it could be safe to say that most of the flow was in Monfils' racquet.
Interestingly, Monfils appeared more aggressive despite scoring 2 less shot winners than Bublik (and had 9 lesser unforced errors), winning almost half of his points from the baseline. Bublik might also have had a near-perfect net points winning percentage (by only missing two), but it was insufficient to counter Monfils' constant shot passes at times. Those passes (and point construction intuition in general) became another reason behind Monfils' 30% break point conversion rate (out of 10 opportunities), especially since the match became baseline-oriented until the end.
On the other hand, only a little differentiated both players in their service games. Even if Monfils landed only 56% of his first serves, he was still able to have a 5% more first serves winning percentage than Bublik, since he won 64% of his points from serve, with 29% of them being unreturned serves. To complement, Monfils scored 5 aces. Bublik's fading second serves, which resulted in a 15% difference in the second serves winning rate, came from not only the 8 double faults, but also several risky moves, where he turned out pulling some underarm serves with various follow-up rates, one of which including a forehand gone too wide that granted Monfils his second break in the second set.
In an interesting third-round encounter, Monfils will face Tallon Griekspoor, who earlier defeated Liam Broady 6-4, 6-2. Knowing both players, working service games and controlled aggression became the most integral aspects in execution to prevail in this match, with willingness to move forward becoming the other aspect. Should be another entertaining match to look forward to!

(It is still advised to listen to the aforementioned audio for the best accompaniment while reading)
The second set turned out to have their own twists and turns, but it took a combination of creativity, intuition, and execution for one to stand out here. While the momentum question was raised earlier in the set, the follow-up was the other important thing, also reflected by the flow.
To start the second set, Bublik's backhand passing shot almost got himself one game ahead with a 2-point lead before Monfils held that service game 1-1 with an ace. It was followed by Monfils' break of serve to 2-1 due to Bublik's backhand rush (to create the break point) and a forehand that went too wide for him to attempt a down-the-line shot (for the conversion), only to be broken back right after thanks to Bublik's volley, which was preceded by his backhand down-the-line winner to create the break point (2-2). Subsequently, Bublik held that service game 3-2.
Two games later, a forehand-to-forehand exchange error from Bublik's half resulted in Monfils' first break point. An underarm unreturned serve from Bublik saved them from his second serve, but Monfils replied with a backhand pass for his third break point several points later. In another second serve moment, Bublik came up with another unreturned serve, only for the final point in that rally to be a forehand went too wide, resulting in the break of serve (4-3). Monfils ended up holding the next service game 5-3, and he let Bublik held so he could serve for the match, which caused the umpire to warn Monfils of the lack of effort, which caused some misunderstandings later on.
At 5-4 (2nd set), Monfils then had the chance to serve for the match. While he survived being 0-30 down and smashed his way to the match point three points later, he had to survive Bublik's seriousness to save those match points, including a backhand winner, a working drop shot, and a backhand let cord moment winner even if Monfils mostly constructed those match points with unreturned serves. Eventually, Monfils' successful serve+1 converted his fourth match point, finally securing a third-round appearance in a larger 500 draw after his comeback by taking the second set 6-4.

Svitolina defeats Azarenka in Washington opener
Elina Svitolina showcased her resurgence after maternity leave by securing a first-round victory at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. With an impressive 7–6(2), 6–4 win, she defeated former World No.1, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, in a captivating match on July 31, 2023.
Following their match, Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka did not shake hands. Svitolina has chosen not to engage in handshakes with players from Russia and Belarus since the invasion of her homeland. However, on this occasion, there was no negative reaction from the crowd after the Citi Open scoreboard displayed a message indicating her stance: “At the conclusion of the match there will be no handshake between the players.”
Svitolina said it was the “right thing” to do: “I asked for the WTA [Women’s Tennis Association] to respect the decision of Ukrainians, and they did.”
