A Big Undertaking Black Sails Musical Parallels | V. VIII. IX.
I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

OK but ok but no but ok. - MRS MAPLETON! She is an expert on humans oh my GOSH. And the way this is true across time and culture too is very alarming to me. The privileged women (me fully included) who are girlbossing it at my corporate job? We're not that different from Eleanor. Uh. I'm gonna have to ummm make some changes in 2024. Mrs. Mapleton is one of the professors at the Black Sails business school of my mind.
Also also? Eleanor is FUCKED. Men may or may not like you or respect you and it can be useful or not, but when the WOMEN in your workplace abandon you, it's game over.

🏴‍☠️ BLACK SAILS EPISODE BRACKET
ROUND 1, GROUP 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUMMARY
XVI. (2.08) — Billy's trap to eliminate the traitors of the pirate crew succeeds, and Flint ends up winning against Hornigold in the election for the captaincy. After the election and its results against him, Hornigold departs from Nassau. Flint also leaves Nassau, but instead sails to Carolina to meet with the governor there in regards to his daughter; Carolina is a place where pirates are believed to be most evil and the attitude towards them is extremely hostile. John Silver discusses the plan for the retrieval of the unguarded Spanish gold with Jack Rackham and his crew. Mrs. Mapleton reveals to Eleanor the plan to retrieve the gold, and they both agree that the plan goes against the dream that they share for Nassau, to transform the pirate town into a legitimate community.
XXXV. (4.07) — Freed slaves from all over New Providence gather at the hidden village of the Maroons as they plan how to take control of Nassau. Governor Rogers finds out that Eleanor was pregnant before she died. Jack and crew head to Philadelphia to enlist the help of Eleanor's grandfather, who doesn't react to their news as anticipated. Billy tries to get Rogers to split up Flint and Silver as a strategy for him to expel the pirates. Rogers talks to Madi, who is apparently not dead.

red queen theory: the rabbit is faster than the fox because the fox is chasing its dinner. the rabbit is running for its life.
– Caroline Forbes, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (The Vampire Diaries).
[Caption: four large gifs with subtle red tones of Max from Black Sails accompanied by the quote written above. The first gif shows a close-up of her expression as she silently observes and considers the man Marion Guthrie is asking her to marry to rule Nassau through him; she's wearing a red dress and jewels. In the second one, Mrs. Mapleton is whispering in her ear as Max observes the room from above, while Jack calls her "the true power here". In the third one, she's in the bathtub, illuminated by sunlight coming through a window, bitterly saying "I built this from nothing. And none of it is real." The last one is a close-up of her expression as she talks to Anne about her past, saying "But inside that room was peace. That is what home is to me."]

bro it’s kind of fucked up how Mrs Mapleton tells Max she’d given Eleanor Guthrie the same advice to only fuck people she could pay and not have any personal debts to—it just carries this implication that Max was a mistake for Eleanor the whole time, that Eleanor wasn’t personally interested in her in the first place.
Also tbh would not have been ooc for Mrs Mapleton to have said that very intentionally, kind of taking Max down a peg

"Five to four against Silver Blaze!" roared the ring. "Five to four against Silver Blaze! Fifteen to five against Desborough! Five to four on the field!" "There are the numbers up," I cried. "They are all six there." "All six there! Then my horse is running," cried the Colonel, in great agitation. "But I don't see him. My colours have not passed." "Only five have passed. This must be he." As I spoke a powerful bay horse swept out from the weighing enclosure and cantered past us, bearing on its back the well-known black and red of the Colonel. "That's not my horse," cried the owner. "That beast has not a white hair upon its body. What is this that you have done, Mr. Holmes?" "Well, well, let us see how he gets on," said my friend, imperturbably. For a few minutes he gazed through my field-glass. "Capital! An excellent start!" he cried suddenly. "There they are, coming round the curve!" From our drag we had a superb view as they came up the straight. The six horses were so close together that a carpet could have covered them, but half-way up the yellow of the Mapleton stable showed to the front. Before they reached us, however, Desborough's bolt was shot, and the Colonel's horse, coming away with a rush, passed the post a good six lengths before its rival, the Duke of Balmoral's Iris making a bad third. "It's my race anyhow," gasped the Colonel, passing his hand over his eyes. "I confess that I can make neither head nor tail of it. Don't you think that you have kept up your mystery long enough, Mr. Holmes?" "Certainly, Colonel. You shall know everything. Let us all go round and have a look at the horse together. Here he is," he continued, as we made our way into the weighing enclosure where only owners and their friends find admittance. Holmes stooped to the water-jug, moistened his sponge, and then rubbed it twice vigorously across and down the horse's face. "Let me introduce you," he shouted, "to Mr. Neville St. Clair, of Lee, in the county of Kent." Never in my life have I seen such a sight. The horse's face peeled off under the sponge like the bark from a tree. Gone was the coarse brown tint! A twitch brought away the tangled red mane, and there, sitting up in the stall, was a pale, sad-faced, refined-looking man, black-haired and smooth-skinned, rubbing his eyes, and staring about him with sleepy bewilderment. Then suddenly realizing the exposure, he broke into a scream, and threw himself down with his face to the straw. "Great heavens!" cried the Colonel.
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 'The Man with the Silver Blaze'

I used to think that this sort of explicit exchange about alliance and power in matters of office politics was just for narrative clarity on shows, but actually this is simply an accurate representation of what high stakes office politics in real life is like, with just better lighting and posture.

[image description: 8 gifs of various scenes from season 4 of Black Sails, highlighting the similarities between Max and Silver.
1-2: Max says to Anne (offscreen), "I loved you. And I betrayed you. But I cannot apologize for it." / Silver says to Madi, "I had to stop it." Madi says, "You had to stop it?" Silver says, "And I'm not sorry for it."
3-4: Flint asks about Silver's past and Silver says, "It isn't important." / Marion Guthrie asks about Max's past and Max says, "What difference does it make?"
5-6: Max says, "I am tired of this. This thing that perpetuates itself with anger, and bluster, and blood." / Silver says, "That isn't a war. That is a fucking nightmare."
7-8: Silver, while captured by Hands, says, "I am a new beginning for Nassau." / at the end of the series, Mrs. Mapleton whispers in Max's ear. Max looks out over the railing in the tavern, a triumphant smirk on her face.
