Nigerians React as House of Reps Moves to Establish Bola Tinubu University. The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward establishing a new university dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Nigerian languages. On Thursday, October 9, a bill to create the Bola Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages passed its first reading. The proposed university aims to offer higher education in Nigerian languages without discrimination and will serve as a research hub for these languages, fostering collaboration and in-service training. The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other lawmakers, seeks to create a federal institution focused on advancing education in Nigerian languages and cultures. Read Also: President Free to Travel Anywhere He Desires with Taxpayers’ Money – Presidency Addresses Concerns Over Tinubu’s Trip from UK to France Kalu emphasized the bill's importance, stating, “This university will foster the learning and preservation of our diverse Nigerian languages, ensuring future generations have access to their rich linguistic heritage. It is a step toward strengthening national unity through language.” Goals and Objectives of the Proposed University The bill outlines the university's mandate to provide opportunities for all Nigerians to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures without discrimination. Section II emphasizes that the institution would encourage the advancement of learning and offer opportunities to all individuals, irrespective of race, creed, sex, or political conviction. Additionally, the Bola Tinubu University aims to develop academic and professional programs that will equip graduates with “adaptive, developmental, and productive skills in the field of Nigerian languages and cultures.” Kalu added, “We need to safeguard our linguistic diversity.” Promoting Research and Collaboration in Nigerian Languages The proposed university would also serve as a research hub for Nigerian languages and cultures, conducting outreach programs, in-service training, and fostering collaborations with other institutions involved in language research and development. The bill stipulates that the university will act as an agent of national development through postgraduate training, research, and innovation. “This institution will play a key role in developing high-caliber Nigerian language professionals who can provide consultancy services and lead groundbreaking research to further promote indigenous languages,” Kalu stated. Nigerians React to the Establishment of Bola Tinubu University. Reactions from Nigerians on social media reflect a mix of skepticism and criticism regarding the creation of a university for the President. One user, @keniemoh4real09, expressed discontent, stating, “I have never seen the most useless House of Rep in the entire history of Nigeria since independence.” Another user, @erickson_egbon, commented humorously, “Nobody is talking about fuel and the bad economy but University 🤣” Further criticism came from @derekchichi, who remarked, “Mr. Number 6 Citizen again. We're not surprised. Anyway, let them redesign the naira to have Bola, Remi, Seyi... and any other Tinubu's faces on the bills. It'll be a good way to get back at Emefiele and also make sure Nigerians are forced to accept their emperor.” Another user, @Libero_ElKeke, derided the initiative, saying, “A university established for an illiterate without a school certificate. That Kalu of a creature seems to take bottom barrel to another level. Here I was thinking Hopeless Courtdinma, Taiwan professor Soludo, OUK were the worst of the Eastern bunch; Boom Kalu anu.” Deputy Speaker Kalu Reaffirms Nigeria's Commitment to African Unity Earlier, Benjamin Kalu reaffirmed Nigeria's dedication to the African Union's Agenda 2063 during an address at the Conference of Speakers of the African Parliament in South Africa. This visionary blueprint aims to transform Africa into a global powerhouse by 2063.
As discussions around the proposed university continue, it remains to be seen how the initiative will be received by the wider public and its impact on Nigeria's educational landscape.

Tinubu Launches Committee to Review National Minimum Wage
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inaugurated a 37-member tripartite committee aimed at formulating a new national minimum wage for Nigeria. The inauguration, conducted by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of the President, who is currently on a private visit to France, marks a crucial step in addressing the nation's wage policies. Chaired by the former head of civil service of the federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, the committee boasts representatives from various sectors, including the federal government, state government, private sector, and organized labor. Notable federal government members include Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy. State government representation features governors such as Alhaji Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger State), Sen. Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State), Alh. Umar Dikko Radda (Katsina State), Prof. Charles Soludo (Anambra State), Sen. Ademola Adeleke (Osun State), and Mr. Otu Bassey Edet (Cross River State). The committee also includes members from prominent associations like the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), the Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), the National Association of Small and Medium Enterprise (NASME), and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). Representing organized labor are key figures from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), including Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of NLC, and Comrade (Engr) Festus Osifo, President of TUC. Vice President Shettima urged the committee to leverage collective bargaining in formulating an acceptable recommendation on the new wage policy. The nation eagerly awaits the committee's swift deliberations and recommendations on this critical matter. “Our objective should be to surpass the basic Social Protection Floor for all Nigerian workers, considering the sustainable payment capacity of each tier of government and other employers or businesses. “I express this viewpoint because the minimum wage represents the least amount of compensation an employee should receive for their labour, and as such, it should be rooted in social justice and equity. I hope that the results of your deliberations will be consensual and acceptable to all parties involved,” the President told members of the committee. The news was made public by the Vice President on his social media handle. Read the full article
