I want to talk about different ear defenders.

This post can also be used as a way to find what pair of ear defenders is best for you, because its informational and descriptive on all of them (All based on my experiences, of course.)

Sensory aids are a great way to help prevent overstimulation, aid the calm down from a meltdown, or just help you to feel safer (and more!). I first started using sensory aids when I was nine, which was when I developed an extremely severe sensitivity to sound. I got ear defenders, which was really helpful. I now have six or so different pairs! The first brand I got was Mpow, but specifically Mpow Kids. Mpow is sort of confusing for me because when you look up Mpow ear defenders it comes up as something completely different than what I'm talking about, same when searching Mpow Kids, so you do need to look around a little bit.

This is the exact pair I have. Something really good about this pair of ear defenders is that its flatter, which is good if you are worrying about bulkiness. It blocks extra sound quite well, but in a way you can still hear people talking to you. However, it doesnt do this perfectly (there is a brand I think does it perfectly in my opinion. Which I will talk about later.) and whilst I can hear people I'm talking to for the most part, I often have to ask them to repeat themself because it makes it hard to differentiate different mouth sounds, which is frustrating. The ear defenders also tend to create kind of an "under water" sound to every noise. It also causes a lot of pressure build up after wearing them for a while, resulting in a bad headache. I also would not reccomend wearing glasses with them. It IS possible, I've done it, but it is really uncomfortable. Despite it being marketed as a kids size I think that they could fit most people.

These are peltor ear defenders. I have two different pairs. The overall noise blocking is about the same as the Mpow Kids ear defenders, except it is a slightly easier to understand people, and the water noise is gone! These headphones are usually a lot bulkier than the Mpow ones. The pair in the photo aren't bulky generally, but are in comparison to Mpow. Most peltor ear defenders are extremely bulky though, so if you want one like the photo you'll need to look around a little bit. These headphones do create the pressure issue again, but it takes a lot longer to do so. You can also easily wear glasses with them, it still isnt extremely comfortable, but it's a lot more comfortable in comparison to other pairs.

These are my absolute favorite brand for ear defenses: Hear Tek. Hear Tek filters the noise near perfectly in my opinion. It blocks noises whilst still allowing me to hear what people are saying to me usually quite easily. The pressure does build up quicker than the Peltor ear defenders, but not as quick as Mpow Kids. It is uncomfortable to wear glasses with them. They are a little bit bulky. Hear Tek also comes it tons of cool colors and designs, as seen in the photo! I personally just have plain red ones with a black over head peice though.

These are Howard Leight ear defenders. They are the cheapest option, but with the cheap price also comes cheap quality. They block very little noise, and are extremely bulky. They have zero pressure build up though, and you can easily wear glasses with them.

So my favorite pair of Bluetooth headphones is the Mpow-059. While the mic sucks, it's got amazing audio quality when not in a call, really good battery life, really solid build that takes a beating. Big fan, got mine a whopping EIGHT years ago for 60 bucks.

Actually, I feel the need to add to this, as a separate entity because I want Spock to stand alone.

There's a lot of people in the notes/tags blaming the phasing out of headphone jacks, and others arguing that Bluetooth earbuds aren't that expensive.

Both of these things are true. But I want to do this for people like me. People for whom earbuds aren't an option.

I can't wear earbuds because they're painful. I discovered recently that it's likely because even the small tips are too big for my ear canals. (I have Loops, and I wear the XS tips {but the new transparent ones don't seem to fit the same, so ymmv})

I also dislike the pressure that over-ear headphones put on my ears. I had middle ear infections regularly as a child, and have chronic inflammation of the inner ear now, so I'm very sensitive to pressure. Ironically, doctors shove otoscopes in my ears and tell me I have an infection I'd never even realised about - pressure is torture, but I can't feel a raging infection.

Anyway, the point was that earbuds and over-the-ear phones are both out for me. I used to use wired phones that just sit in the ear, but these relied on the wire to keep them in place. And they did fall out semi-regularly.

I know there are some that do this (iirc AirPods are like this) but people also report losing them regularly.

Back in the day I even had a pair of wired earphones that went behind the ear to give them a bit of extra support. These were great.

And this kind are still available as Bluetooth earphones. They're marketed as being for sports, but they absolutely exist.

Plantronics do some nice ones (although I don't think they're called Plantronics any more), but they're on the pricey side. They were worth it. Just a shame I misplaced them all. So I went cheaper for my latest pair.

These latest ones are Mpow Flame 2s. Now, what I missed about these were the fact that they do have earbuds. But they have a set of incredibly small tips that, for me, I can't feel at all. They weren't expensive, and their sound is pretty good.

Bone conduction also exists, but I find they don't actually keep the sound to just you. They can be heard by others nearby too. And the sprung band can be annoying and restrictive of certain movements. They aren't useable by anyone who uses a wheelchair with a head support, or a tall desk/gaming chair. And if you've got long hair, they're also on the awkward side.

The right earphones exist out there. It might take a bit of searching, but they do exist.

And no one around you wants to be subjected to your music or vids. It's really annoying. It was annoying 20 years ago when it was kids sharing their latest ringtones - and I was still a kid myself at that point!

A little bit of empathy goes a long way. And that why I needed to make this post. Because I am in that boat - I can't just pick up any pair of earbuds or earphones.

(obligatory statement about not being associated with Plantronics or Mpow, not advertising specifically, not earning any money etc etc. Just doing this to help out others)

I have like 5 headphones (4 of them are cheap asf) but only one of them is wired, but it's also green -> streaming with green screen looks weird. So I wanted to stream with a wireless one, but once I connected it to the OBS software THE SOUND IN MY HEADPHONES WAS GONE. Like idk what the hell is wrong, maybe the bluetooth bugged out cause I also had a controller connected.

I should probably just get a cheap wired headset that isn't green TT
