Southern Railways – ‘S15 Maunsell Class’ 4-6-0 No.825 (BR No.30825) backing up at Grosmont Station to take the 11:30 down service to Pickering NYMR – 04/08/2021 por Peter Heelas Por Flickr: The LSWR S15 class was a British 2-cylinder 4-6-0 freight steam locomotive designed by Robert W. Urie, based on his H15 class and N15 class locomotives. The class had a complex build history, spanning several years of construction from 1920 to 1936. The first examples were constructed for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR), where they hauled freight trains to the south coast ports and further west to Exeter, as well as occasional passenger work in conjunction with their larger-wheeled N15 class counterparts. Following the Grouping of railway companies in 1923, the LSWR became part of the Southern Railway, and the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the newly formed company, Richard Maunsell, increased the S15 class strength to 45 locomotives. Maunsell incorporated several improvements, notably to the steam circuit and the locomotive's loading gauge, allowing it to operate on routes with height and width restrictions. The new locomotives were built in three batches at Eastleigh, and were in service with the Southern Railway for 14 years. The locomotives continued in operation with the Southern Region of British Railways until 1966. Seven examples have been preserved for use on heritage railways, and are currently in varying states of repair. These locomotives were given the nickname "Goods Arthurs" due to their similar appearance to the N15 Class locomotives. S15 Urie Class 4-6-0 No.30837 designed by Robert Urie and modified by Richard Maunsell at Eastleigh Works in 1927, in 1948 it was allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction and was moved to 72B Salisbury in 1951 where it stayed until it was withdrawn in 1964, when it was sent to Woodham Brothers at Barry for scrap, it stayed there until 1986, it was saved. In 1994. No.30825 was cannibalised by the North Yorkshire Moors and Mid Hants Railways for spares. This included using the frames from 30825 to restore 30841 with the resulting locomotive becoming 30825. The boiler and tender now being used by 30825 were thus donated by 30841. It is owned by the Essex Locomotive Society and based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Taken leaving Grosmont Station, North Yorkshire Moors Railway – 04/08/2021

LinkedIn update
Since I have been thinking about my career plans I am sure that I want to get some work experience (paid or unpaid) before applying for a masters course in interior architecture or exhibition design. Therefore I have sent a series of job applications as a junior designer on websites such as Reed, Adzuma, Total jobs etc... I also ensured that my linkedin account was updated.
Updating my linkedIn was useful for me to not only ensure viewers saw the latest ventures I have been involved in but also allowed me to review how far along I have come since first year. Through linkedIn I made sure recruiters are aware that I am seeking ‘opportunities in experiential design: retail, hospitality, museum and exhibition design’.
The networking site is usually free but also includes the option of premium membership which is free for a month. The membership has a series of perks such as your profile being moved to the top of hiring managers list, discover who is interested in your profile, directly reaching out to hiring managers, etc... Therefore last month I applied to a series of ‘junior interior designer’ positions and directly contacted the recruiters where required on linkedin.
Since updating my linkedin profile I have already had two recruiting companies directly getting in contact with me with regards to roles available that would suit my skills, knowledge and experience. Both of the roles are different yet allow similar experiences. Both of the recruiters asked for my portfolio. Whilst I had my website to showcase my wide variety I believe it was essential for me to create portfolio that directly catered to the different role and organisations.
One of the organisations is a high street retail store specialising in optical and hearing centres and are growing their in house interior designers. The role is for a retail store design assistant. Due to my lack of experience in that sector I had to ensure that through my portfolio and cover letter I showcased that my skills and work experiences are still relevant. My CV, portfolio and cover letter as submitted according to their job description is available here
The second was for a architects practice in Eastleigh who specialise in residential, retail, leisure and educational institutions. My interests in the public sector of the industry meant I was immediately attracted to the role. However I had to ensure that my portfolio should showcase that I can work with projects that cater to the general public as well as buildings with multiple floors. Since I lacked work experience in this field I avoided to include those projects. However the recruiting firm advised me to send a separate work experience portfolio in case they find any more job opening relevant to my experiences and skills on the job. Therefore I sent them two portfolios which are available here
I have yet to hear back from both the organisations.

Is SIG partnering with PolyVision?
Is SIG partnering with PolyVision?
Hi there people of the internet, Roofer Pro Middlesbrough here with a new blog post, there has been a couple of big announcements for some high quality roofing companies and I would like to talk briefly about them and shine a light on these wonderful businesses.
First up is a company I have mentioned many times on the blog and that is good old SIG. SIG have become the exclusive distribution partner for PolyVision’s a3 CeramicSteel in the UK and Ireland so this is big news for both companies.
SIG partners with PolyVision
Effective from December 2016, SIG secured the agreement in recognition of the company’s knowledge and core values within the construction industry worldwide.
Mark Fyfe, UK infrastructure director at SIG, commented: “We’re extremely excited to be adding the PolyVision a3 range to our portfolio. We strive to bring the most innovative solutions to market which support consistency in a changing world and the a3 surface fits perfectly within this strategy.”

youtube
I think this is a great move by PolyVision as SIG is a big name with vast experience in the roofing industry and they have a global focus too so this could be an awesome play so I will keep an eye on this as I expect to see some innovation from SIG here so lets wish them all the best shall we.
Partnerships help all involved so again I wish them both the best of luck.
And now for another partnership, but not a conventional one, more a large contract won but still a big deal for Burton roofing company Bracknell Roofing as they have sealed a £1.9 job with New Forest District Council, let’s take a closer look.
Bracknell secures £1.9m New Forest Council Contract
The contract will run in two phases over the next 18 months and will see around 285 of the council’s aging house stock – including detached and semi-detached houses, as well as bungalows – in Hythe and Lymington have completely new roofs. Bracknell Roofing’s Managing Director Simon Smith is delighted to secure the contract for the company.
“The team at our Eastleigh depot, led by Paul Stubbington, must be congratulated for securing this contract in the face of stiff competition, as it is a significant contract win for Bracknell Roofing.
“Of course, we had to be very keen on price to ensure that New Forest District Council could be sure that it was getting the best value for money – but we’d also like to think that the council was impressed with the track record we have, the quality of our work and the fact that the council could rely on us to deliver within the required timescale.”
read more here…
Absolutely love it, well done Bracknell! This is a huge deal, but lets face it, Bracknell Roofing are the UK’s second largest roof, slate and tiling contractor, with over than 400 roofers across the UK so this will be no problem for them but it’s great to see this so I am very happy for them as those 400 roofers need something to do

Ben Fitch - Customer Research Assistant
I’m just coming up to my one-year anniversary at B&Q and I have loved it the whole time. Last September, I moved to Eastleigh from St. Austell, Cornwall after a long search to find a job that spoke to me. I studied Psychology at university and have always wanted a position where I could put my passion for research to good use and when I saw a job opportunity in the B&Q insights team I was intrigued. I already knew I would be relocating as I had struggled to find good opportunities for work in Cornwall, though I hadn’t ever planned to go quite as far! I didn’t know a huge amount about B&Q before I found the job, just that it was an established British brand that was a household name, and as I researched the company I found out a lot of great things: the commitment to sustainability, support in local communities and the business’ growth from a single store in Southampton to a household name. As I saw the parallels between B&Q’s goals and my own mindset, I knew I had to take the opportunity.
I travelled almost 200 miles by train for my interview and was amazed when I arrived at the office. I remember walking into the impressive, bright, open space of the building and seeing smiling faces all over - it left me buzzing before I even had the interview! After a passionate conversation with my now-manager, I knew I would be happy here. Thankfully I got the role I wanted and last September I made the move by train with the essentials of my life packed up on my back! (If that doesn’t show commitment I’m not sure what does). A year later I am as optimistic as ever about my role, I’ve enjoyed nearly every day working here, seen growth in my skills and persona and built strong relationships that will last a lifetime.

The company of NYDC in Tarantiseismic. Photo by Tony Nandi
This is a dramatic show performed on the Sadler’s Wells stage by the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC). There are thirty nine dancers between the ages of 15 and 22, most of them 17 and 18, from a variety of dance backgrounds, from disperate parts of the country, brought together to create work as an ensemble. Nearly all of the dancers are on stage all of the time.
There’s a lovely introductory film in which the artistic consequences of this ambitious enterprise is described by the dancers. Although they may have been daunted by the talent of their new peers at first, ultimately this made them aspire for more in their work.
Damien Jalet is the Guest Artistic Director of NYDC for 2017. He was inspired, when creating the choreography for Tarantiseismic, by Tarantism, a form of hysteria occurring in southern Italy between 14th to the 18th centuries, when men and women were being seized by a wild compulsion to dance for hours, sometimes days on end. Mr Jalet has combined this concept with the seismic force of an earthquake to suggest unpredictability. He’s created controlled frenzy on stage, performed by his dancers with immaculate emphasis, and precision.
The show builds with two of the most stirring sections at the end. The penultimate section is a warm, camp fire type dance around a drummer and his drum kit who changes what has been largely music of dissonance up until then into an affecting rhythm of regularity. The finale is a suitably moving end to an enjoyable evening.
There’s a first class creative team working on the show to create illusion and effect including Jay Barry Matthews, Natasha Chivers and Jim Hogan.
This is an enjoyable show exhibiting young dance talent of the future in an imaginative and appealing showcase.
Review by Marian Kennedy
Tarantiseismic is a new commission that sees Jalet present a unique piece of theatre which addresses themes of melancholia, ritual, control and abandon. Jalet’s revered choreographic style combined with the young dancers’ energy and talent is set to produce a mesmerising experience that shifts the consciousness of the audience.
This year’s diverse cohort of 39 young dancers comprises 29 new members, selected through NYDC Experience Workshops held in towns and cities all over the country. The dancers are mentored during three intensive residencies over the year, in order to create, rehearse and develop the new piece. Throughout the dancers’ time with NYDC they are given a unique insight into the dance profession, gaining skills and techniques that open up career possibilities.
