john giving paul a bracelet: fact or fiction?
Tumblr media
a lot of mclennon fics feature this silver ID bracelet of paul being given to him by john
so did john give paul a metal bracelet with his name on it?
this one is completely just a theory which lands it in
Tumblr media
not too crazy much to get into source wise w this one because it's solidly theory/headcanon territory but i'll explain anyway for anyone that doesn't know The Bracelet Lore!
this one comes at me from @life-under-calico-skies :
Tumblr media
Hello! First of all; THANK YOU for your blog! Omg! It was much needed! My question is; did John really give THE bracelet to Paul? It makes sense bc of the timing and when Paul wears it or not - so I WANT to believe it so bad. But I don't think I ever saw ONE reliable source saying that he once gave him a bracelet (or any other jewel, for that matter)
first of all thank YOU! i'm glad you enjoy the blog <3
but you're totally right- there's nothing other than the timing/when paul wears it and as near as i can tell, there's no source on it whatsoever, just people tinhatting. so we can't necessarily say it's Untrue, but it's a bit like speculating that they started a sexual relationship in hamburg or that x song was written about y... there's not much in the way of proving one way or another, unless paul comes out and says something different
with that SAID if someone says "john gave paul a bracelet" THAT'S definitely misinformation (intentional or not ofc). it's not fact. it's just a theory & i think somewhere that got a bit lost in translation? but anyway i'll break down what you mean by the timeline so others know wtf we're talking about here lmao
the theory
paul has/had a silver identity bracelet with his name on it. the theory goes that john gave it to him in paris or on paul's 21st bday & paul wore it on and off throughout his life
there's not much to back this up but there's also not much against it? so if you want to believe it that's fully your prerogative. me personally, i think it's a nice thought/headcanon and don't really Believe one way or the other, i just like the idea of it for like fics and shit
so the timeline...
Tumblr media
this is the source for the Main pic people use to show the inscription. these pictures were presumably take in late 1963 and published in october of the same year
which also means this one could be earlier as it's also from '63 and the Only place i can find it is on a 1993 trading card saying it was from a "1963 publicity shoot" but i can't find any other photos from the shoot or which shoot it was to tell you what month that was lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's also this photo from his 21st birthday party with it, which is Probably the earliest of these two:
Tumblr media
which I honestly think is the Most likely time he would've received it, whether from jane or john or whoever else.
and as for the Rest of the timeline i'm pulling from a now deleted post by @ swaying-daisies who seems to have deactivated or changed urls but here's the post anyway. you can see him still wearing it in the 70s, although he stopped wearing it around 1967 for a while it seems
Tumblr media
and then you can see it again in anthology:
Tumblr media
as for where he got it all he's ever said was this:
Tumblr media
"Dear Paul, I waited for three hours in line to see A Hard Day's Night and I thought it was just marv. What wrist do you wear your gold ID bracelet on and where did you get it?" Patricia Parrish BARSTOW, CALIF. "Dear Pat, Glad you enjoyed the film. We've almost finished work on our second movie now- and it's in color this time. Hope everyone enjoys it. I'm left-handed, so it is much easier to wear my watch on my right wrist. Therefore, the bracelet is on my left wrist. Where did I get it? Let's just say it has close sentimental value."
i've seen people say that there's pictures of him from Before 1963 with the bracelet on, but i can't find them.
so the options come down to: it was a gift from jane, it was a gift from john, it was a gift from his mother, or it was a gift from one of his other relatives
a couple of reasons people doubt the jane aspect is that he continued to wear it into the 70s & then ofc people claim that he had it before he met her. i can't find any evidence of him having the bracelet before jane, so i take that with a grain of salt. i'd think for me personally the only thing discounting it from being from jane is the fact the he still wore it during anthology. if it were just the 70s, that might be hand-waved away because it can still take a bit to get rid of everything an ex gave you. but by anthology, he definitely would've been over it.
people also point to him being cagey and saying "let's just say it has close sentimental value" as a reason it's Not from jane, but honestly i don't find that very compelling because at the time of this letter he was still like. out as being with jane, but it was peak beatlemania when they were supposed to be appearing single & approachable. so if it was from jane, i don't think he'd say that here either.
the oooonly other point against it being from jane is simply that i've seen people assert they "know for a fact" that it's from jane because people had matching sweetheart bracelets back then- but she's never seen wearing one. but that's just against them having matching ones, i really don't know if she gave it to him or not.
i don't see any reason that it wouldn't be from a family member that's not his mom, though. if it were his mom, there definitely would've been photos of him wearing it long before 1963. so For Me it comes down to john or another family member. jane is also still a strong possibility to me, although like i said the anthology bit throws a wrench in that for me, unless that's a different bracelet completely. or who knows, maybe he got attached to it outside of her- i've definitely kept things from exes long after i give a shit about them if i'm being honest.
another piece people like to throw in is that in both of the photos of him wearing it after his and john's split, he's wearing it on his right wrist rather than his left, like a widower would if it were a ring. not convincing to me honestly, but it's a part of The Whole Theory/Headcanon bit
others also speculate it could be from ringo! ringo had a similar one and I wouldn't be too surprised if paul liked his so he got him one for his 21st. definitely An option to consider!
also, if anyone knows the exact date on that teeth brushing photo that would be lovely. or if anyone happens to have a photo of him with the bracelet from Before he met jane.
but yeah tl;dr: it's theory, if anyone says it's for sure fact they are misinformed or just really want to believe it. no one knows who gave paul that bracelet and i doubt we'll ever know, so have fun.

Sonic and Goku
This is a late tribute to "Akira Toriyama" who unfortunately passed away at age 68 on March 1st of this year, due to acute "subdural hematoma (SDH)". He's mostly notable for being the creator of both "Dragon Ball" and "Dr. Slump". He's also known as a character designer for several video games such as the "Dragon Quest" series and "Chrono Trigger", as well as "Blue Dragon" released on the XBOX 360 in 2006. He's made a name for himself in the manga/anime and video game industry, and overall became a beloved figure of millions not only in Japan, but also overseas. Dragon Ball was Toriyama's most famous creation, which initially first debuted as a manga series published by "Weekly Shōnen Jump" in 1984. Then 2 years later it became adapted into an anime series produced by "Toei Animation". And since then, it became a world wide sensation spawning movies, video games, merchandises, even trading card games. Toriyama's work was so successful that it became an influence to another big media franchise known as "Sonic the Hedgehog". Back in the early 90s, Sonic's co-creator/programmer "Yuji Naka" (also credited as YU2) was a big fan of Dragon Ball that he wanted to pay homage during the development of "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" for the "SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis". Which is the first in the series to introduce both the "7 Chaos Emeralds" and "Super Sonic". And since then later on became the staple of the Sonic franchise. In "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles", the special stages with running and collecting gumballs were based on Kaiō-Sama's (King Kai) Planet, where Goku would run around to chase bubbles. Fun Fact: In 1993, Toei Animation (the studio behind the Dragon Ball anime) was hired by SEGA to animate the cut scenes for "Sonic CD" during the games development for the "SEGA CD". Years later, they were also involved with animating cut scenes for the game "SEGAGAGA" released for the "SEGA Dreamcast" in 2001 only in Japan (Sonic also made brief appearances in some cuts scenes, making it the 2nd time Sonic became involved with Toei Animation). There's arguably a big parallel between the two starting from the "7 Chaos Emeralds" (7 Dragon Balls) and "Super forms" (Super Saiyan) to the rivalry of "Shadow the Hedgehog" (Vegeta) and "Silver the Hedgehog" (Trunks) etc. But what if it was the other way around? For example, Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Gero), Burning Blaze (Super Saiyan God), Dark Super Sonic (Goku Black), Hyper Sonic (Ultra Instinct Goku), Solaris (Merged Zamasu)? Just a guess. All in all, I may not be much of a fan of "Dragon Ball" myself, but I will say Toriyama has created a legacy that inspired another legacy and many more. He is the inspiration of many in the animation industry, and will forever be remembered as such. Without Toriyama (or Dragon Ball), the Sonic franchise would've probably never been the same. Rest in Peace "Akira Toriyama".

Muppet trading cards! Released in 1993, there are 60 cards total of this original set. The set was broken into several subsections, including parody movie posters, sports cards, personal profiles, and recreations of famous art pieces (those are my favorites out of the ones I got!)
I keep wondering how much work went into all of these cards! How many outfits were made for these muppets just to get discarded after the photo shoot?

Top 10 Worst Album Covers of 1986 - Part 1/2
I've been doing the worst album covers list at the end of the year for a couple years now, and I do this because I love looking at and talking about album covers. The Album Cover is one of my all time favourite forms of art, and many would argue that it is such an integral piece to the album listening experience. So, it made me wonder, why don't I go back and really explore the album covers of years previous, let's pick a random year and look at some of the absolute worst album covers that the year has to offer. Maybe I'll also do a best list, I dunno, but let's start with 1986, why? Because the 80s are remembered as one of the best decades for music, and yeah the music was pretty great, but some of the album covers… nah. So, let's enjoy this blast from the past, this is the top ten worst album covers of 1986.
10. Europe - The Final Countdown
Tumblr media
I know I've already brought this cover up when I inducted it into the Album Cover Wall of Infamy in 2021. It's just a ridiculous image. It's the band members in the Phantom Zone, it's a bunch of trading cards falling to Earth, it's dumb, and not the fun dumb either, it's just straight up dumb. I think the key difference between something being "fun Dumb" and being "Dumb" is entertainment value, and frankly this image is kinda boring. This album cover is dumb and boring, sounds like a lot of Hair Metal acts now that I think about it.
9. Pet Shop Boys - Please
Tumblr media
No, you do not need to increase the webpage's zoom, that really is how tiny they made the image. I guess this made sense back in the days of vinyl, when the record sleeves were huge compared to casette's and CDs, and since vinyl has made a comeback I guess I shouldn't be surprised if anyone disagrees with me. I still don't get why you would do this, when you have all this space to work with, you stick a tiny image in the center and fill the remaining space with a solid colour. Why not just have the full photo be the album cover?
8. John Fogerty - Eye of the Zombie
Tumblr media
First of all, that isn't a zombie. That is, judging by the nose and the eyes, a cat person. Okay, let's assume that the term "Zombie" is being used as an umbrella term, like "Fae" was. Fae used to refer to all kinds of magical creatures, so maybe the same idea is being used for "Zombie"? Except that's stupid, especially by 1986, when the previous year saw the release of George A Romero's Day of the Dead. Secondly, Zombie or not, get the Hell away from me, take a step back, I do not want your face close to mine.
7. UB40 - Rat in the Kitchen
Tumblr media
I can't tell what I'm supposed to be more disgusted by, the giant radioactive rat, or the skinny cheese man climbing the walls. Also, great job putting the band name on the album cover twice guys.
6. Jean-Michel Jarre - Rendez-vous
Tumblr media
I don't think I need to say anything with this one. You guys remember that ASDF movie sketch? Like, it's not only an incomplete Earth, it's an incomplete face, and it's kinda disturbing. There is one question I have though; Who is this Granger person?
Well, let me talk a bit about Michel Granger, a French Artist from Roanne. He actually did a lot of the covers for this guy, and… a lot of them are really good. 1976's Oxygène, 1978's Équinoxe, 1993's Chronologie. Notice how none of the examples of good album covers came from the 80s, and that's because for most of the 80s, the album covers were not done by Michel Granger, as far as my research brought me, this was the only one… and that's just kinda… sad.
Part 2 here!

Why do you think Startropics didn't get a single spirit in Smash Bros Ultimate, do you think it was intentionally snubbed due to not being released in Japan or it was just accidentally overlooked?
I think you hit the nail on the head.
Nintendo rarely acknowledges their history unless it was also released in Japan, and even then they can be picky sometimes.
This mostly goes for other media like cartoons and comics, because there aren't many western exclusive Nintendo games. But did you know they love the Donkey Kong country Cartoon over there in Japan, and Bluster Kong even made his way into an official Nintendo trading card set promoting Donkey Kong 64? That's because the show got a Japanese dub. You won't see the same thing for the Mario or Zelda cartoons, at most you'll get a joke in a manga somewhere making fun of those things. The 1993 Mario movie however got a Japanese release, so it made it into the very tail end of a Super Mario 35th anniversary montage, and got it's own manga adaptation.

Get to know you better
Thanks to @the-spooky-alien for tagging me!
Rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know better
Favourite time of year: Early to mid-October. Warm days and chilly nights, the leaves are turning, you can smell wood smoke in the air. Sweaters and boots! It’s the best time of the year.
Comfort food: Tomato soup and grilled cheese. Mashed potatoes and gravy.  Good milk chocolate.
Do you collect something?: Do thoughts count? I have a small, carefully curated collection of books I will never get rid of. I also have a large storage tub full of TXF memorabilia dating back to 1993. It’s mostly magazines and photos, but I also have the FtF lunch box and the M & S figurines released for the movie tie-in, trading cards, and other assorted goodies.
Favourite drink: Coffee in the morning, wine in the evening, and water all the time.
Favourite Song: I’m sorry, but I can’t pick just one. There are too many songs spanning too many decades to narrow it down that far.
Current Favourite Song: Breathe Again by Joy Oladokun has been the earworm for the past couple days. It makes my heart hurt in the best way possible.
Favourite Fic: Once again, I can’t name just one. But I’ll give you one title for each of my main obsessions. They’re the ones I’d choose if I could only read one fic in that fandom for the rest of my days. Into the Wood by Walter Gilman for ASOIAF/SanSan and the Iolokus series by Mustang Sally and RivkaT for TXF/MSR.
I’m gonna be a rule-breaker and not tag anyone. But if you feel like playing, please do!

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Slippin’ Mickeys
Only 3 stories by Slippin’ Mickeys ended up at Gossamer, but she’s written many more stories than that. She’s also one of the few authors who posted numerous stories during the shows original run and then again in the revival years. I’ve recced some of my favorites of her stories here, including Last Chance Falls and Currahee. Big thanks to Slippin’ Mickeys for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
I would say that it does and doesn't surprise me. It surprises me that anyone would want to read something I wrote all those years ago, (only in that I was an actual teenager at the time, and had no chops at all -- I've grown a lot as a writer, and honestly have trouble reading my old stuff because I would have made much different creative decisions now). But the fanfiction that came out of the original run of the show -- from almost day one -- was so rich and varied and a lot of it so well written that I am not the least bit surprised that people want to read it today. I go back and read old favorites often, and am always thrilled to find something that's new-to-me, even if it's 27 years old.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
The first thing I think about when I think about my fandom experience are the friends I made along the way. The X-Files came up with the internet, and there was a whole new way of connecting with people that liked the things that you liked. To this day, I am good friends with many people that I met through the show back in 1997-98. When the revival came about, I dove back in, and made new, more recent friendships that are just as rich. I love the show, but I also love the people I met along the way.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
I first got into the show's online community on some random message board that I think I probably found through a Yahoo search one day in a computer lab on my university's campus. I connected with one woman from Greece named Fay that day, who invited me to join a group of women that chatted about the show after it aired on Monday nights. After the first time I hooked up with them, we talked almost daily via ICQ. Later, in the early aughts, I found the forums on Mighty Big TV/Television Without Pity, where some of the most intelligent discussion was going on. The forums were heavily moderated, and so they were always on topic, and it was just a smart, funny, great place to be.
Eventually, I started working for TWoP as both a writer and moderator (surprise! A lot of people don't know this because TWoP protected the identities of their mods so well, but I was the X-Files board mod after Jessica left!). It was my first paid writing gig and opened doors for me both professionally and personally. Two TWoP recappers were in my wedding!
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
Fanfiction opened my eyes to storytelling as a medium. I'd obviously gone to school and read books, but it opened my eyes to words to could do and be. It was a heady time. There were stories of every stripe. Short, long, canon-compliant, AU, experimental, you name it. We had such gifted writers, too. To this day, I'd almost rather read a piece of well written fanfic than a good book. Fanfic made me want to be a storyteller myself.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
It was the 'ship. God bless the ship. My first episode was Never Again, but I didn't watch again until I was sitting with my college roommate freshman year and she was like "sorry, but I have to watch The X-Files on Sunday nights." That first episode was Redux. The next week was Redux II, and by then it was all over for me. The lengths Mulder and Scully would go to for each other? And the relationship wasn't even sexual? Here were two people who loved each other. Really loved each other. Selflessly. I was SO IN.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
At first, I started reading it. This was back when you could only watch the show in reruns or on those VHS tapes that were sold in three packs that had two eps on each tape (I still have the trading cards that came with them), so after I burned through the VHS options (of which there were few), and set my VCR to tape the weekly reruns on FX, I needed MORE. I found fanfic. And in fanfic, Mulder and Scully actually like, kissed and maybe even had sex! I read everything I could get my hands on. Pretty soon, I wanted to write it myself.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
Things are tough these days. It's a hard world to live in, and politics aside, it just feels like everything is falling apart around us. When I first found the show, my life was in a bit of upheaval and I dove into the fandom to distract myself. I'm doing the same thing these days. When the show ended, I left the fandom and lived without it for about 15 years. But when the revival came (and really only after finishing season 11 -- season 10 didn't do much for me), I dove back in. I have quite a few more responsibilities these days, but when I can't watch the news anymore, I log on to XF Twitter (I use my fandom account far more than my IRL account) or Tumblr and get lost for a while. And most nights find me reading or writing fanfic before bed. When the world gets better (I'm cautiously optimistic) and the show has been off the air for years and years, will I leave again? Maybe. But for now, it's once again my happy place.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
Nothing hardcore. The X-Files is my ride or die.
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I do an occasional episode or movie rewatch. Not too often, but when I'm jonesing and have 45 free minutes, I'll put one on. But I'm writing fanfic again, and I get hit with inspiration at random and odd intervals, so it's safe to say I find myself thinking about Mulder and Scully probably more than is healthy.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
All the time. The old stuff, the new stuff, the good stuff. If I have five minutes and my kid is entertaining himself? I'll happy pull out an old favorite.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
I'm reluctantly abstaining from this question, as I'm still active in the fandom and I know that naming favorites will hurt some feelings.
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Of The Eight Winds is probably my favorite. I've had a lot of fun writing AU's lately. It's a nice creative outlet, taking our favorite agents and plunking them in a totally different world.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
Do I! I have a whole ass queue. It's frankly irresponsible.
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I was writing professionally before I had a baby, and I took years off to be a stay at home mom. Once my kiddo was finally in school full time, I started writing again. With the pandemic, that's for the most part on hold, as I just don't have the bandwidth to dedicate to professional work. Fanfic is easier to play with when you only have five minutes here or there, and it's also great exercise when it comes to plotting and prose, so I'm  sticking with fic for now. When the kiddos are all back in school, maybe I can start getting paid again.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
I get a lot of prompts that I just adore. And honestly, a lot of times, I'll post a stupid picture or ridiculous prompt of my own on Twitter and get dared to write it. If the idea gets stuck in my craw, I generally have to exorcise the demon.
What's the story behind your pen name?
Bad Blood had just aired and I was obsessed with it. I wanted to pay homage to it, so took Mulder's "who slipped him the mickey?" quote and ran with it. Do I regret that? Sometimes.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
My husband knows and is supportive. He's a working writer, so he supports my endeavors, though I know he wishes I were doing something I could monetize. But it makes me happy, and ultimately: happy wife, happy life and all that jazz.
The friends of mine that I've made through the fandom all know and are super supportive.
As for the rest, well... I have a nom de plume on purpose!
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
All my newest work is on AO3. My old stuff can be found on various archives. Like the truth... it's out there.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
I'd leave it with: we're a blessed fandom. The show we stan (even with the real stinkers, there's always something to love) keeps giving, the fellow fans are all some of the smartest, sweetest, and most dedicated people out there... we've been blessed for 25 years, and I don't see that stopping any time soon.
