Mouth Cancer Rehabilitation in Bangalore
Mouth or oral cancer is a complex ailment. When there is an abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells that starts developing in the lining of the mouth, or on the surface of the tongue, it is called a tumor. The growth can be seen in the inner side of the cheeks or the roof of the palate, gums, or lips. In time, it can lead to mouth or oral cancer. In some rare cases, mouth cancer includes glands that produce saliva, or the tonsils at the back of the mouth. Also, it is seen in the part of the throat connecting the mouth to the windpipe sometimes. If the symptoms are ignored and the treatment is delayed or not provided in time, the malignant cells can penetrate deep into the layers of tissues that include bones and muscles. There are many reasons responsible for mouth cancer, though researchers are still unable to pinpoint the particular reason behind it. The most common and foremost reason for it is smoking. Apart from that, chewing tobacco, and alcohol consumption are also possible causes of mouth cancer. The problem is curable if it is diagnosed and treated in the early stage. But, in the majority of cases, patients fail to consult a specialist until the problem has reached an advanced level.
The Department of Head and Neck Cancer at Dr. Athira Ramakrishnan’s clinic is one of the best facilities in Bangalore. She is the best ENT Surgeon/Otorhinolaryngologist. She is an expert in all types of Head and Neck Surgeries. She is specialized in all types of mouth and oral cancers with a rich experience of more than 15 years. She has been working as a Consultant ENT, head, and neck surgery, with Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore. Dr. Athira Ramakrishnan has studied in various reputed medical institutes in India. After graduating from JIPMER, she did her Postgraduate in ENT at PGIMER in the year of 2006. She is an expert in a wide range of surgeries, including mouth and oral cancers. Her area of expertise is ear surgeries, thyroid, endoscopic sinus surgeries, parathyroid surgeries, laryngeal and oral laser surgery, and head and neck cancer surgery. She has been working as a Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Surgery in Fortis Hospitals since 2015. She can perform several complex surgeries including mouth cancer. She is trained in preoperative counseling management, surgery, and post-operative rehabilitation of oral and mouth cancer patients also. She has been involved in clinical research as a part of the training program along with her regular duties.
The treatment of oral cancer is a series of targeted surgeries and rehabilitation. If surgery is needed, then Dr. Athira Ramakrishnan’s Mouth Cancer Rehabilitation in Bangalore is the clinic equipped with leading doctors and medical staff that is well versed in modern, non-invasive operative methods. The treatment of mouth cancer changes the ability of a person to talk, eat, breathe, and swallow. In the clinic, there is a team of surgeons, plastic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and speech and swallowing specialists. They will work in collaboration to offer the best possible opportunity of making the treatment successful.
Rehabilitation is paramount for cancer patients of all types. It is because cancer treatments come with temporary physical, psychological, and cognitive problems. The problems faced after surgeries often make it harder for the patients to come back to their normal lives. And if you leave the issues unaddressed, there are high chances of these problems causing a permanent impact on health. Hence, rehabilitation plays a key role in the treatment process. It is a highly person-centric health strategy. At Dr. Athira's clinic, there is a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team that comprises physiotherapists, speech and swallow therapists, onco-dieticians, and so on.

Oral cancer cases account for 30% of total cancer cases in India. In women, 10.4% of all cancers are usually oral and are the second most common cancer in India. Mouth cancer is more common in rural areas of the country. Almost 14 lakh new oral cancer cases were detected last year in India alone. Early diagnosis of oral cancer is the only way to ensure a cure. Oral cancer is determined to be due to the human papillomavirus, alcohol use, betel nut, tobacco smoke components, chewing tobacco, asbestos, stem cell transplantation, and premalignant lesions. There are many other factors that are yet to be found out and could be responsible for it.
Oral cancer management would include surgery/neck management/ radiotherapy/ immunotherapy/targeted drug therapy/ chemotherapy along with rehabilitation. Cancer could be in the tongue, roof of the tongue, lips, the inner lining of the cheeks, mouth floor, gums, or cancer in the corner of the mouth. Oral cancer treatment can easily cost one around 4-5 lakhs. White or red speckles in the mouth, throat soreness, ear pain, facial numbness or pain, vocal changes, swallowing/ chewing, or speaking problems are some of the warning signs which indicate something is wrong.

India’s Dancing Bears, are an exemplary example of how wildlife can be saved from the grasp of horrendous cultural practices. A Dancing Bear refers to the forceful dancing of a captive sloth bear by its owner. This practice dates back to the Vedic Era (1000-700 BCE) and now forms the identity of the Kalandar Tribe. During the Mughal Era, the Dancing Bear became a prominent form of entertainment for the elite. It was also believed that a Dancing Bear was a good luck charm. Unfortunately, Sloth Bears have fallen victim to the rampant illegal wildlife trade due to this tradition. It is no surprise therefore, that the species is considered “Vulnerable” according to the IUCN Red List.
Efforts have been made to legally abolish this cruel practice. Following the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, numerous states mandated the possession of ownership certificates of sloth bears. In 1998, the practice was completely banned. However, such policies were of no avail as Dancing Bears. The tradition proved to be a rewarding occupation for the economically reserved Kalandar Tribe. A bear owner would earn up to 500-600 in a single day. A lack of awareness and implementation of the law excaberated the problem further.
The Horrid Lives of India’s Dancing Bears
Sloth Bears cubs are captured as cubs from the wild as a part of the illegal wildlife trade. Their paws are often harvested to make bear paw soup. These bears are sold to the Kalandar society for over $2000. Adult bears are never caught in the wild because of the immense danger they pose to the poachers. In fact, the mother of the bear cub is also killed when the cubs are captured. The traumatic shock faced by the cubs due to separation from their mother can sometimes prove fatal.
For the bears which do survive, a life of torture and deprivation awaits them. To ensure the safety of the owners, the claws of the cubs are either knocked out or clipped while the teeth are removed. Anaesthesia is an imaginary entity in this entire process. Meanwhile, a hot rod is forced through the bear’s snouts in order to permanently puncture it. This puncture allows the anchoring of a rope around the nose, which is used to train and control the bear during dances. Training and disobedience results in beatings with rods and physical threats, all which psychologically damage the orphaned cubs. The practice would also foster the illegal wildlife trade.
youtube
(Himalayan Brown Bears are another species impacted by the illegal wildlife trade)
Furthermore, the poverty stricken owners of bears lack funds to provide a nutritional diet and water. Blindness by castration and dehydration are amongst the most common causes of death for these unfortunate beasts. Other diseases the bears are susceptible to are oral cancer and gum infection, caused due to the piercing of the gums of the bears. This could prove fatal as bears tend to suck their food through closed mouths. Another disease which has been extensively prevalent in captive bears is tuberculosis. The excessive human interactions of captive bears, allow the rapid spread of such highly contagious pathogens. Tuberculosis infected bears show minimal symptoms and providing bears with anti-tuberculosis medication has proven futile.
Rescuing India’s Dancing Bears
Fortunately, a wildlife NGO by the name of Wildlife SOS is battling hard to end this cruel practice. Comprising three campuses in Agra, Bhopal and Bangalore, this NGO has been rescuing dancing bears since December 2004. In 2009, the last of India’s 628 dancing bears were rescued. All bears have been undergoing rehabilitation since their rescue at the various centers. Releasing these bears is not an option because of the loss of their wild instincts and behavior. For example, a prominent behavioral difference noticed in captive bears, is their lack of climbing abilities, a skill so vital for the avoiding of predation in the wild. Another behavioural alteration in captive bears include the pronounced increase in aggression. Staff at Wildlife SOS have reported excessive roaring and banging against enclosure walls. Such aggression could prove fatal in the wild.
However, the problem of the Dancing Bears does not end with the rescue and rehabilitation of all individual bears. The economic upliftment of the Kalandamar society is of utmost importance to reduce reliance on this industry. Wildlife SOS has also been providing various soft skill training to members of the society. This includes aiding bear owners to establish a formal career and providing communities with sewing machines, hence opening the gateway to the textile industry. In fact, the Wildlife SOS staff also comprises numerous former bear owners. Furthermore, free healthcare was being provided to the Kalmandar villages, alongside providing free educational resources. Such economic upliftment would prevent the need of the tribe to resort back to such cruel practices to earn a livelihood. Wildlife SOS is also rescuing India's captive elephants from the horrid life they live.

Cancer Treatment in India
Cancer is any form of disease that causes the cells in any part of the body to develop in an uncontrolled rate which leads to the formation of abnormal mass of tissue, known as a tumor. Cancer is also known as ‘malignant neoplasm or malignant tumor’. However, (benign) tumors do not spread to the surrounding areas or organs from the site of origin, but the malignant form of tumors can affect the organs and tissues around the origin site by spreading the uncontrolled cell growth to other parts of the body. India is home to the largest oncology-specialty hospital network that are equipped with the most advanced technology.
Why India for Cancer Treatment?
Cancer is one of the most deadly diseases known to man. The timely, detection, diagnosis and correct form of treatment, however, can make a lot of difference. A cancer treatment applied fast is known to produce excellent results in innumerable cancer cases.
Doctors in India are known to be highly-specialized and well-trained in modern treatment methods of cancer. Different Types of Cancer:
Cancers are further classified into separate categories, depending on the area of the body that is affected and also according to the type of cells that the tumor originates in.
Here is a list of cancers classified according to the type of cells that make a tumor:
Carcinoma: These cancer cells are caused by epithelial cells (cells lining the surface of any organ or blood vessel) which are mostly found developing in adults. These may also include colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.
Sarcoma: These are found in the connective tissues, such as nerves, cartilage and bones. These are the uncontrolled growth of the mesenchymal cells around the bone marrow.
Leukemia / Lymphoma: These are caused by blood cells. This type of cancer is known to affect children as well as adults.
Germ cell tumor: Cancer caused in the pluripotent cells (cells that develop into other types) and the more common type is the ovarian cancer and the testicular cancer.
Blastoma: These are caused in undeveloped embryonic tissues and are more common in small children.
Below are several types of cancer classified according to the part of the body that they affect:
Appendix cancer: An appendix cancer, or appendiceal cancer, are caused in the vermiform appendix. These may also be caused by the spreading of female genital tract tumors, colon cancer and breast cancer.
Brain cancer: It is an umbrella term used to denote the various types of cancer that affect the brain – such as cerebellar astrocytoma, malignant glioma, ependymoma, medulloblastoma, etc.
Breast cancer: This type of cancer affects the breast tissue and is most often detected in the form of a hard lump, change of breast size and dimple in the breast skin, fluid leaking from nipple or a red patch on the breast skin.
Cervical cancer: This type of cancer affects the cervical region. It has the risk of spreading to other parts of the body as well (malignant in nature). Vaginal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse and pelvic pain are often the signs of cervical cancer.
Colon cancer: This is also known as colorectal cancer, bowel cancer or rectal cancer. This cancer affects the parts of the large intestine (colon or rectum) and is caused by the abnormal growth of cells. Blood in the bowels, irregular bowel movement and extreme weight loss are some of the signs of colon cancer.
Esophageal cancer: This type of cancer is found to affect the food pipe (esophagus), a pipe of soft tissue which starts from the mouth and ends at the stomach. Signs of esophageal cancer mostly include weight loss and trouble in swallowing, hoarse voice, swollen lymph nodes, dry cough or blood in vomit.
Eye cancer: These can often originate in the eye itself or can spread to the eye from other cancers in the different parts of the body (breast cancer or lung cancer). The Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most commonly seen eye cancer.
Gastric cancer: This is also more commonly known as stomach cancer, this type of cancer develops in the lining of the stomach. It is often signified by upper abdominal pain, heartburn, loss of appetite and nausea. Later stages of symptoms include blood in the bowels, troubled swallowing, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin to weight loss. This type of cancer is also known to spread from the stomach to other parts of the body like lymph nodes, bones, lungs, etc.
Head & Neck cancer: This cancer mostly affects the mouth, lip, nasal cavity, pharynx or larynx. These usually originate in the epithelium cells of the head and neck region.
Kidney cancer: Also known as renal cancer, this affects the kidney of the patient. The two most common kinds of renal cancer are renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and the transitional cell carcinoma (TCC).
Leukemia: This is an umbrella term used to denote a number of cancers that originate in the bone marrow and cause an abnormal growth in the white blood cells. These immature white blood cells are called ‘blasts’ (or leukemia cells). Leukemia is signified by bruising and bleeding problems, fever, fatigue and increased risk of infections. These are the result of lack of normal blood cells.
Lung cancer: It is also known as pulmonary carcinoma or carcinoma of the lungs. This type of cancer is a malignant tumor caused by the uncontrolled growth of the tissue cells in the lung. This can spread to other parts of the body if not treated promptly. Chest pains, shortness of breath and blood in coughing are the major symptoms of lung cancer.
Melanoma: It is a type of cancer that affects the pigment cells called melanocytes. They usually occur in the legs in women and on the back in men. They can often start with a mole that later develops carcinogenic characteristics such as increase in size, change in color, skin discoloration and itchiness.
Oral cancer: This directly starts in the oral cavity (mouth) region. It usually starts as a lesion in the mouth tissue and can spread to the surrounding areas. It can occur in the floor of the mouth, gums, cheek tissues, lips, roof of the mouth (palate) and other parts that consist of the oral cavity.
Ovarian cancer: This affects the ovarian region of a woman. Common symptoms include abdominal swelling and pelvic pain. The ovarian cancer affects the ovary mainly, but is known to spread to liver, lungs, lymph nodes, bladder, bowel lining and the lining of the abdomen as well.
Penile cancer: This is caused by a malignant growth occurring on the skin or tissue of the penis. HIV infections, penile warts and poor hygiene are the most common causes of penile cancer.
Prostate cancer: prostate cancer (or carcinoma of the prostate) affects the male reproductive system due to a cancerous growth in the prostate gland. This type of cancer is known to spread from the prostate to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes and the bones. Pain in the back or pelvis and blood in the urine or difficulty in urinating are the common symptoms of prostate cancer.
What are the Treatments for Cancer?
The same way a cancer is classified according to the type of tumor cells and the location of the cancer, the treatment process for cancer also varies.
These are the types of treatments that are available for cancer:
Surgery: A cancer surgery is used to remove a cancer as well as repair the damage caused by the cancerous cells in the body. It is also used at times to diagnose as well as prevent cancer when possible.
Radiation therapy: Also known as radiotherapy, this uses ionizing radiation techniques to kill or control cancerous cells from spreading to other parts. This is also used as a preventive measure to decrease the risk of the cancer from recurring after being treated.
Chemotherapy: This technique for cancer treatment uses a number of drugs and medicines to destroy cancer cells in the body. It is useful to stop the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells as well as preventing the cancerous cells to spread to other parts of the body in some cases.
Immunotherapy: This type of cancer treatment manipulates the patient’s immune system to destroy, or suppress growth, of cancer causing cells in the body.
