How would you rank each non-replica on a scale of creativity/original ideas?
That is a good question with many possible answers! Mostly because there are "good" creative/original ideas and "bad" creative/original ideas out there, and some of the most creative ones may also be the one I dislike the most... For example, if going by creativity and originality alone, Estonia would be very high on the list. But I'm not really loving the production overall, so I wouldn't say it's the best original take on POTO. If that makes sense. But if ranking the productions purely by how different they are and how hard they have worked on not looking like the original, I would say:
ESTONIA: Inter-war setting, rather bleak in its colour scheme and overall design, with one helluva mirror-discoball lair design, leather-coat Phantom, Vivienne Westwood-esque Il Muto, Moulin Rouge-ish Masquerade, 1990s Haute Couture Don Juan... There's so much to say. Definitely original, and not just giving "we had a low budget" vibe.
FINLAND / SWEDEN: 1980s costume vibes, gold mask, rock'n'roll, huge sets, tiny chandelier, gigantic orchestra, for the most actual opera singers in the leads. This one felt odd more than anything. But original? Very much so.
KRISTIANSTAD, SWEDEN: Definitely a production on a budget, but yet checking off all the boxes of what you'd expect of a POTO production. And with some super original ideas for some key scenes - Raoul stumbling around in the falling sets during the Overture, the elegant double staging in the boat scene, the rarities in the Phantom's lair, Red Death crashing through a mirror and later disappearing in mid-air... They had so many cool lil' details going on. In style fairly 1880s, and with a cool horizontal half-mask for the Phantom. I really appreciated this one.
SERBIA: One could maybe argue this was more low-budget than original...? At least the basic black set with few changes and the many low-key costumes didn't feel like the biggest effort out there. But different? Oh definitely.
BULGARIA: Pretty much the same comments as Serbia. However, the Phantom's fruit crown in PONR can never be unseen. Neither can the monkey musical box which seemed to have lost its will to live. Memorable for sure.
ROMANIA / NORWAY / GREECE / TOUR: Whereas the basic drum set was fairly similar to the Restaged Tour, it felt like an original production still. Some independent interpretations of the Palais Garnier (including featuring a huge window as a mirror substitute for Christine), more Edwardian flair of the costume design, and a kick-ass chandelier - grand, fun, and with some cool and independent directing ideas throughout. The idea of never leaving the opera house, for example, was interesting. Very enjoyable overall.
MEDITERRANEAN: Basing nearly the whole set design within a rectangular, turnable box on stage was a neat and cool idea. This, combined with oh-so-Victorian costumes and so many nods to Phantom history, felt original and clever. Also some stunning original visuals, like the Phantom's lair with the Piraniesi-esque labyrinth backdrop. Speaking of original, it probably looked very as expected with its heavy victoriana flair - but to me that's not a negative thing.
POLAND: One could argue this in large was a carbon copy of the 2004 movie. The costumes in particular, but also directing elements like including a sword fight in the Mausoleum scene. But the sets - oh, those beautiful sets! Also a wild chandelier crash.
SYDNEY HARBOUR: A really hard one to rank. The world's first outdoor production (ORIGINAL!), with sets looking like Bjørnson's design on steroids (not as original), with 1860s flair costumes (hello 2004 movie) with a dash of LND Australia (not as original), but then a flying gondola over burning water (ORIGINAL!), a huge cast (very RAH), and performing come rain or sunshine (ORIGINAL!). Something old, something new... But definitely a cool one for the Phantom portfolio!
RESTAGED TOUR: I was a bit in doubt on how to rank this one. I mean, the costume design is in large not new, it's Maria Bjørnson's costumes. But then new set design, new directing and new choreography. With various degrees of success. To me the most original idea is the drum set structure, and also some new magic tricks and added moments. I'm not loving the directing choices, as it makes both the Phantom and Raoul rather unloving candidates for Christine - why would she pick either of them? Also felt too much like a nod to Love Never Dies to appear truly original. So yeah, mostly for the sets.
HUNGARY and CZECH REPUBLIC: Whereas the productions themselves may not look the same, they both feel like two similar takes, to loving interpretations of the original, sticking to the same colour schemes and with a heavy Victorian flair. Directing wise they also feel like the same landscape. I appreciate both a lot, and especially Hungary has some clever ideas going on. I also loved how they picked Palais Garnier as a base - but totally different areas or angles of the Palais Garnier than what Bjørnson did. But if going purely by originality they don't move too far outside the box.
NEW ROMANIAN PRODUCTION: Nearly impossible to rank. AI design with some tweaks, which has resulted in a sort of amalgamated combo of all the non-replica production set design, with a sprinkle of Maria Bjørnson design on top. With some playing-card-odd costumes. Some visuals are stunning, some are very traditional, some are way out there. Yeah, I have no idea how to rank this one.
(and of course this is just my impression of them - have in mind that I've only seen three of them live, and if I see more of them in the future I may feel different about this ranking)

ALSO! I think it's bc I just associate Baz Luhrman movies with music (Moulin Rouge being a musical and Romeo and Juliet and the Great Gatsby both having very distinct soundtracks) and something about the way he uses light in his shots constantly made me feel like Hugh Jackman was about to burst into song in Australia and then he just. Didn't.
Which is fine, it's already 4 movies in one and didn't need to add another genre but like. Romance adventure musical set in Australia with him as a drover would've been a Much better movie, even if they just did a jukebox musical even though I know you don't like those as much
a romance adventure musical with hugh jackman and nicole kidman wouldve slapped so hard they didnt need Any of that other stuff my god. youre so right and your brain is huge

Any ladies in Paris for the Olympics, be careful.
Australian woman 'gang raped by five men' in Paris just days before the Olympics
Woman, 25, allegedly 'gang raped' in Paris
She was taken to hospital and police are investigating
By ANTOINETTE MILIENOS and CANDACE SUTTON FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA
PUBLISHED: 16:26 EDT, 22 July 2024 |
An Australian woman who was allegedly gang raped in Paris just days before the Olympics opening ceremony had a flight booked home the following day.
The distressed 25-year-old woman told police she had been attacked by five men 'of African appearance' after seeking refuge inside a kebab shop just metres from the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret theatre at about 5am on Saturday.
The woman, who was described having 'her dress inside out' and carrying her underwear in her hand, also claimed her mobile phone had been stolen
Disoriented and unable to speak a word of French', she was taken to Bichat hospital after the owners of the Dounia kebab shop, a late-night Lebanese food restaurant on Boulevard de Clichy, called police for help.
The street, famed for its arts and theatre outlets, is also a red light district, with a lap dancing club and a sex shop next to the Lebanese trattoria.
The woman, who was reportedly in Paris for the Fete de Musique music festival, told investigators of her horrific ordeal; however, she was reportedly unable to give details on the exact place or circumstances surrounding the attack.
Parisian police want to avoid fear being spread among tourists as hundreds of thousands flock to the French capital for the Olympic Games.
It has since emerged the alleged assault happened just a day before the young woman was due to fly back to the safety of Australia.
She apparently had a flight home booked for Sunday, according to 2GB's Olympics reporter Clinton Maynard, and it is unclear if she is still in France.
Police are now inspecting CCTV footage but say even if she is no longer in France they will try to identify the alleged perpetrators, who 'young and of African appearance'.
Paris Prosecutor's Office announced an investigation into the incident was under way.
'The investigation into the charge of gang rape likely to have been committed on the night of July 19 to 20 has been entrusted to the second judicial police district,' Paris Prosecutor's office said.
Alliance Paris Police Union said investigators will 'do everything to quickly identify the individuals and bring them to justice'.
The incident comes just days before the Olympics is set to begin, and despite Paris launching a major security operation ahead of the event.
Armed guards have been spotted patrolling the streets, metal barriers now line the Seine.
A huge force of some 45,000 police officers drafted in from 43 countries and 18,000 soldiers will make up the defence system.
But alongside human efforts, several aerial units will also be involved in the 'unprecedented' operation, including Rafale fighter jets, AWACS surveillance flights, Reaper surveillance drones and helicopters with expert snipers on board.
Some 1,700 members of the British police force are already supporting French officers in Paris and Marseille as well as UK sniffer dogs that have been handpicked by French authorities.
Images from Paris today show the city behind rows of metal barriers as locals and tourists dine at restaurants behind perimeter fencing near the River Seine - where the opening ceremony is set to take place on Friday.
The four-mile metal barricade was put in place by the Paris Police Prefecture and will remain throughout the Games to prevent and deter any trouble.
Dubbed the SILT, or the 'belt of steel' the anti-terrorism fencing is ultimately the first line of defence and were initially erected on July 18.
Anyone who wants to enter the protected area will need to scan a QR code to me it into the gated part of the city.
All cars are also banned from entering certain zones around some of the event venues with solely emergency vehicles allowed through.

A while back you mentioned how Japan does what you call “Sit-Down Tours” where they will open a musical in a certain area of Japan, close it after a few years, and then reopen it somewhere else in Japan.
Would you say that this applies to Musicals in Australia?
Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that shows like Les Mis, Wicked, and Moulin Rouge will open in some area of Australia, stay there for a few months and then move to a different place in Australia
Well, I call them "sit-down tours" (a totally made up word by me) in Japan for a few reasons. To me, sit-down productions are ones that stay in one location for quite a period of time - not just a few months, but close to a year and usually longer. I'm US-based, so I'll use US examples: the Los Angeles sit-down production was there from 1989-1993; the Chicago sit-down production was there from 1990-1994; and San Francisco lasted from 1993-1999. Meanwhile, tours are usually only around in their city for a few weeks, though occasionally some will stay longer - the US national tour would stay in Los Angeles for one and a half months, for example. Furthermore, the time between stops is usually pretty short, only a few days.
So the reason for calling Japan's tour a "sit down tour" is because it combines aspects of both those things. "Stops" in the Japanese range from a few months to a year and a half. The lengths between stops are also fairly long: not just a few days, but anywhere between a few months to a year and a half as well. So they're not staying as long as a regular sit-down production, but they're staying longer than a regular tour stop; they're taking longer than a regular tour between locations, but not as long that we would call it, say a revival of a production. It felt perfectly in-between those definitions so I made up a word that's perfectly in-between them heh.
Now, I'm not in the fandoms of those other shows very much and some of them have so many tours that I'm not even sure which ones you're referring to (Les Miserables doing a concert tour? okay then), but from what I'm seeing of the Australian tour that began in 2014, it seemed like a regular tour? It was in Melbourne from July to October 2014, arrived in Perth January 2015, Sydney in March 2015, and Brisbane May 2015. The stops are a bit longer than ones in the US, I suppose, but they're not remarkably longer and neither is the length of time between stops, I feel. Wicked's Australian tour in 2008 feels a little closer - it ran in Melbourne and Sydney for over a year, but the time between those stops only took a month, and subsequent stops also only lasted a few months and the time between them, a few weeks. Same for Moulin Rouge. Overall, it doesn't feel quite like Japan's unique model; it feels like a regular tour, just with longer times at each stop because, presumably, it's making fewer stops to prioritize the biggest cities (versus the US tour in recent years, which has scaled down in size and expense so that it can hit both the bigger and smaller cities in less time).
But also, "sit down tour" is literally a term I made up lol (like "unofficial alternate" or one that I came up with on the spot in a server the other day, "replica-adjacent") and the definition I have for it is not even that laid out or objective. It won't even mean anything outside of my Tumblr hahaha. So if you want to call the Australian tours that, go for it!

i love your review of elvis. i had previously kind of resisted seeing baz's films, just having the impression that they were going to be Too Much for me, but when i heard he was tackling an elvis film, i thought the energies seemed to fit, even though i didn't know much about either man. but if his other films have that same effect of worming under your skin, i need to watch them all. i saw elvis four times in theaters and haven't stopped thinking about it/elvis for a single day since, it's outrageous. i think it makes so much sense to have an outside narrator of elvis' story drive the film. austin shows us the dynamic complexity of elvis through his every movement, but the film and the colonel and the audience are still crying to cage him into that still-life image, inserting distance between us and him. i think the film is always thinking about whether that distance is necessary to actually "love" a person you don't know, but that is the same question that paralyzed elvis with fear. his deep sense of isolation was always fighting against his love for other people and his longing to be on the ground with them, but he sensed that he couldn't let anyone see how much he was struggling lest they pull away. i keep thinking about how the first lyric we hear is "oh, let our love survive," and the film is like ... how much are you going to suffer to keep it going? and who tricked you into thinking you didn't deserve to be loved without giving so much of yourself away? it definitely works as a reflection on hollywood and culture, but it becomes more deeply personal and compassionate toward elvis the more you know about him. <3
chelsea! first of all, i never did take a moment to say how glad i am to see you again and to have you here <333
baz's signature is doing The Most and giving softly dreamy to intensely spliced energy to The Aesthetic, but he somehow manages this in a way that ends up being emotionally affecting and clings to you after viewing. (i think his only film i haven't seen is Australia.) he has a very specific signature and style influenced by his passion for dance/music/fashion, and it's fun seeing how he decides to express that and utilize it as an essential aspect of the storytelling, plus catherine martin makes such beautiful costumes for everything that are illustrative of character and design in such a rich way. i definitely understand why you might have thought his films would be a lot! but since you did enjoy elvis, i wouldn't hesitate to encourage you to give his others a try! moulin rouge remains a particular nostalgic favorite to me (i used to have a moulin rouge poster on my door as a teenager, i still remember my dad buying it for me in the mall. it was one of thee movies for me in high-school. my ex-best friend and i used to blast the soundtrack on repeat, one time during lunch in the classroom we used to hide out in, he jumped on a table to reenact ewan mcgregor singing your song. when i was first very ill, it was a movie i put on a lot. i'm sure this reveals something about me spiritually lol).
something with baz's style that comes through is the incandescent power of music and its deep connection to us. music is always almost like its own character, and he plays with interjecting those anachronistic pieces to give the stories a modernist edge while still staying rooted in their own times, which is very interesting! i loved the strong mix of elvis' own music with the honor to the gospel/r&b/black artists who influenced and inspired him, further mixed with artists he himself inspired and who are creating work now. it made those threads so potent and alive. you're right that the energies match well.
you described this beautifully, i honestly think reading this helped me sort through some of my thoughts and put parts of the film into better context! we have that distance because we're constantly observing, as an audience even when we do feel that sense of love and admiration/appreciation for an artist, there's also a certain complicity because we can never actually know them, and we do inherently want something from them. we can never be undemanding of them as humans, it's that tension where we cherish the art, but we're also by necessity consumers of it. we can't help but be part of the pressure and the noise, even when we try our best to exercise that with empathy for a person. there is an uncrossable distance.
austin shows us the dynamic complexity of elvis through his every movement, but the film and the colonel and the audience are still crying to cage him into that still-life image !!! exactly, and that's what i was referring to a bit in how the idea of an everlasting image haunts me at times, because that can never be a fully realized acknowledgment of anyone. the indelible iconography of it all becomes so much bigger than life that if we want to find the humanistic reality again, it takes some excavation. that's fascinating and heartbreaking to me.
the predatory nature of that framing device gives a lingering sadness to it too, where we are put both into the perspective of our place as audience members, but we also become emotionally connected to the person elvis was and have that reaction of sorrow. i kept wishing desperately that i could protect him from all the things. the ending as well, when it confronts that concept of "love" between an artist and their fans, and how massive that is, how it's intoxicating and enriching, but can also be corrosive. it's difficult and it's moving and it's complicated to navigate.
i think the film is always thinking about whether that distance is necessary to actually "love" a person you don't know, but that is the same question that paralyzed elvis with fear. his deep sense of isolation was always fighting against his love for other people and his longing to be on the ground with them, but he sensed that he couldn't let anyone see how much he was struggling lest they pull away. yes, VERY much so. he tried so hard to conceal that hurt and those struggles because people depended on him, but also because he depended on them too and understandably feared the loss of that love.
the use of suspicious minds as the film's overarching theme was perfect. it totally reframed its meaning and made it speak to both his inner and outer life, to the weight of that fame and love and need.
the film is like ... how much are you going to suffer to keep it going? and who tricked you into thinking you didn't deserve to be loved without giving so much of yourself away? it definitely works as a reflection on hollywood and culture, but it becomes more deeply personal and compassionate toward elvis the more you know about him. absolutely. it's a big question and often sadly a universal one regarding culture and consumption, the expectations put on famous artists to give and give continuously without breaking or showing the cracks (which is impossible and harmful), the demands when such a bright spotlight becomes searing, the strain that comes even from adoration because it's not wholly real. it also subtly questions our fascination with that suffering without exploiting it for visceral shock value. i really appreciate the way the film handled the ending, for example, giving us enough without ever being cruel or relishing in the tragedy for the sake of it. the compassion there is so central.
i knew a bit about him personally, and was familiar with many of his biggest hits, just by virtue of cultural osmosis and the long-held interest i have in older films/music, but the film made me want to do deeper dives into the personal story and the deeper cuts of the music, and i'm loving exploring that, which makes it even more wonderful to be able to share with you! thank you for posting about him and the film because it's what sparked my interest even further to watch it! i've caught up on a lot of movies over the past couple of weeks, but i think elvis had the biggest impact on me, both in thinking about it and the expanse of its themes, and emotionally in feeling both for him and for the magic that exists in the way music keeps living forever. 💗
#joons#letterbox#this was such a joy to read thank you for sending it to me!#elvis#also not to expose sw*ftie brainrot but i keep thinking about the themes of elvis and dear reader#we're caught in a trap; i can't walk out; because i love you too much baby#if it feels like a trap you're already in one#you don't have to answer just 'cause they asked you#i wander through these nights; i prefer hiding in plain sight#my fourth drink in my hand; these desperate prayers of a cursed man#no one sees when you lose when you're playing solitaire#you should find another guiding light but i shine so bright#idk i could write a lot about this lol the thematic parallels hit me hard

Watching MOULIN ROUGE
There is no logical reason I should like/love this movie as much as I do. It shouldn't work as well as it does.
Though I try, it's not possible for me to engage this movie with my head. Just with my heart.
Is it the power of cheesy pop music?
Is it Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor perfectly cast?
Is that most people that know me IRL are shocked that this is in my personal top 10=15 of all time?
Yes.
One of the best things to come out of Australia since Wombats, Heath Ledger, Tim Tams, Angela White, Penguins, and Wi-Fi.
The worst thing to originate out of Australia- The Selfie. What destruction ye hath wrought.
Anyway, every time I see this I want the ending to change, yet I still watch it all the way through.
I'm sure there are in depth reviews of this film. This isn't one of them.
Come what may...

MOULIN ROUGE! dir. Baz Luhrmann | 2001
Was Moulin Rouge filmed in Paris?
It is this end of the 19th century that Baz Luhrmann recreates in his film Moulin Rouge. Most of the film was shot in the studio, in Australia. But to write the script, the film maker carried out a lot of documentary research and immersed himself in the atmosphere of Montmartre.
Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 jukebox musicalromantic drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. It follows an English poet, Christian, who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan, Satine.
Starring
Nicole Kidman
Ewan McGregor
John Leguizamo
Jim Broadbent
Richard Roxburgh
Moulin Rouge! - Wikipedia
Moulin Rouge!
The most famous cabaret in the world!
The Moulin Rouge was immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec and was the cradle of the music hall with the famous Mistinguett. Since it opened in 1889, it has dazzled the whole world. Edith Piaf, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra and Elton John … numerous French and international personalities have over the years become enamoured of this legendary cabaret!
The room is magnificently decorated in belle époque style and red velvet, with typical burlesque frescoes. A wonderful place to enjoy gourmet French food by by the Chef David le Quellec, served with champagne - the official drink of the cabaret. All your senses are awakened as you enjoy your food and watch the show!
Admire a troupe of 60 artists from all over the world who perform twice each evening in the revue 'Féerie', a show made up of four breathtaking acts: feathers, rhinestones, sequins, sparkling decor, acrobats, original music, international attractions ... not forgetting the famous fast-paced French Cancan.
An iconic place, flamboyant colour, talented artists, renowned craftsmen, a high-quality team, original stage productions ... The Moulin Rouge is all that, and more!
Come and spend an evening at the Moulin Rouge - with family, friends ... or lovers - and discover the show "Féerie". Being dazzled by the artists is synonymous with an “enchanted interlude" ... in brief; a magical and unforgettable moment! Correct clothing required. Jacket and tie appreciated. Shorts, bermudas, sports clothes and shoes, flip-flops are not allowed.
