The Evolution and Innovation of BMW Engines: A Deep Dive
Introduction
BMW, or Bayerische Motoren Werke, is renowned globally for its commitment to engineering excellence and innovation in the automotive industry. Central to BMW's legacy is its range of engines, which have continuously set benchmarks in performance, efficiency, and technology. From its early days as an aircraft engine manufacturer to becoming a leader in high-performance automotive engines, BMW's engine development story is one of relentless pursuit of perfection. We delves into the intricate journey of BMW engines for sale, exploring their evolution, technological advancements, and the brand's future direction.
The Origins of BMW Engines
BMW's journey began in 1916, initially focusing on aircraft engines. The company's first major success came with the BMW IIIa inline-six aircraft engine, known for its high altitude performance and efficiency. This early achievement laid the groundwork for BMW's reputation in precision engineering. Post World War I, the Treaty of Versailles restricted Germany’s production of aircraft engines, prompting BMW to diversify into motorcycle and automobile engines. The transition was seamless, thanks to their expertise in crafting reliable, high-performance engines.
Early Automotive Innovations
In the 1920s, BMW made a significant leap into the automotive industry. The BMW Dixi, based on the Austin 7, marked BMW's entry into car manufacturing. The true breakthrough came in 1933 with the BMW 303, the first car to feature the iconic kidney grille and an inline-six engine, a configuration that would become synonymous with BMW. This engine was pivotal in establishing BMW's engineering prowess, offering a blend of smoothness, performance, and reliability that was ahead of its time.
Post-War Resurgence and the Birth of Legends
After World War II, BMW faced significant challenges but emerged resiliently with a focus on innovation. The 1950s saw the introduction of the BMW 501, powered by a robust V8 engine. However, the real game-changer was the BMW 1500 introduced in 1961. This model, powered by the M10 engine, laid the foundation for BMW's success in the sports sedan market. The M10 engine, in various iterations, powered numerous BMW models for over two decades, showcasing versatility and robustness.
Motorsport Influence and the M Series
BMW's foray into motorsport significantly influenced its engine development. The M Division, established in 1972, epitomized this synergy. The legendary BMW M1, introduced in 1978, featured a 3.5-liter inline-six engine producing 277 horsepower, setting new standards for performance cars. This era also saw the birth of the iconic M3 and M5 models, which continue to be benchmarks in their segments. Engines developed by BMW Motorsport not only excelled on the track but also trickled down to production models, enhancing performance credentials across the lineup.
Technological Advancements and the Evolving Engine Lineup
The 1980s and 1990s were marked by significant technological advancements. BMW pioneered the use of electronic fuel injection and variable valve timing with the VANOS system, enhancing both performance and efficiency. The introduction of the V12 engine in the BMW 750iL in 1987 was a testament to BMW's engineering capabilities, offering unparalleled smoothness and power. The later addition of the Valvetronic system further refined engine efficiency and responsiveness.
The Rise of Turbocharging and Efficient Dynamics
Entering the 21st century, BMW embraced turbocharging, a shift driven by the need for greater efficiency and reduced emissions without compromising performance. The N54 twin-turbo inline-six, introduced in 2006, was a game-changer, offering substantial power and torque across a wide rev range. BMW's EfficientDynamics program, launched in 2007, integrated technologies such as regenerative braking, auto start-stop, and lightweight materials, significantly improving overall vehicle efficiency.
Hybrid and Electric Powertrains: The Future Beckons
As the automotive industry pivots towards sustainability, BMW has been at the forefront with its hybrid and electric powertrains. The i Series, introduced in the 2010s, exemplified BMW's commitment to innovation. The i3 and i8 models, featuring electric and plug-in hybrid systems, showcased advanced engineering and a vision for a sustainable future. BMW's recent advancements include the development of next-generation electric vehicles (EVs) like the iX and i4, which promise to deliver high performance while embracing eco-friendliness.
The Vision for Tomorrow: Autonomous and Hydrogen Technologies
Looking ahead, BMW is exploring autonomous driving technologies and hydrogen fuel cells as part of its long-term strategy. The company’s investment in hydrogen fuel cell technology aims to offer an alternative to traditional electric powertrains, particularly for long-distance travel. BMW's autonomous driving initiatives, exemplified by the Vision iNEXT concept, envision a future where driving pleasure is complemented by advanced autonomous capabilities, setting new benchmarks for safety and convenience.
Conclusion
BMW's journey in engine development is a testament to its unwavering commitment to innovation, performance, and efficiency. From its early days in aviation to leading the charge in automotive engineering, BMW has continuously pushed the boundaries of what engines can achieve. As the automotive landscape evolves, BMW's focus on sustainable and cutting-edge technologies ensures that it remains at the forefront of the industry. The legacy of BMW engines is not just about power and performance; it’s about a relentless pursuit of excellence that drives the brand forward into the future. Read the full article

Recommeded reading for Dick Grayson / Robin and Nightwing
This is an updated repeat of a couple of lists with reading recommendations with Dick as Robin and Nightwing (Pre-Flashpoint) that I've made earlier. But since I wrote them as answers to asks, the posts don't have a headline, and I find that they can be easy to miss (for me, when I want to look something up...) So I thought I might as well make a new, single post of them.
The stories are in what I imagine would be an in-universe chronology. They are from all periods, ignoring that the Golden age stories and Silver/Bronze/modern age stories have at times been considered two different universes. Most of them are stories that, at the time of their publishing, were canon and in continuity. None is explicitly Elseworld, so you can certainly imagine that they have happened ;-)
To be honest, not all of these comics are examples of great storytelling. Older superhero comics, for instance, are definitely something else compared to modern comics, for better and for worse. I've picked some because they are "the first time" or significant in some way (e.g. the first time Dick was almost killed, when Bruce has to fight to keep custody, an infamous fight between Dick and Bruce, the most well-known different origin stories, panels that are often quoted); others because they have a cute or fun moment. I have also included some books that I don't like myself but are well-known.
Storytelling has changed a lot since Dick was Robin. Back in the Golden and Silver age, with very few exceptions, comics were stand-alone short stories. In later decades, it's usually arcs that span at least a couple of issues and some stories have consequences for years.
Dick has been an active team member since the 1960s, and he has arguably been at his best in some team titles, but I still don't have a lot of team books here. I find it difficult to, off the top of my head, recall any "special Dick issues".
Obviously, these are very personal preferences, and the list is based on what I've read and remembered best.
Robin the Boy Wonder. Detective Comics # 38 (The original origin story. There has been maaany more since then – I've made a list just with origin stories....) (1940).
Batman: Year Three. Batman # 436-439. (An origin story where Dick spent some time at a nice orphanage before he came to Bruce.) (1989)
Robin Annual vol 2 # 4. (Another origin story, where the Gotham authorities remove Dick him from the circus, and he is put in the Gotham City's Youth Center. Not my preferred but it's well known.) (1995)
The Gauntlet. The Batman Chronicles #1. (The test before Batman let Dick start out as Robin.) (1997)
Grimm. Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #149-153. (A story set when Dick is new as Robin and still uncertain about his place. For a while, he wants to leave Batman and stay in a children's underground paradise.) (2002)
Robin: Year One. (Traumatic events during Dick's first year as Robin. He was nearly beat to death by Two-Face. When Bruce said he was not permitted to continue as Robin, Dick ran away because he didn't think there was a place for him at the Manor any more.) (2001)
The case of the honest crook. Batman #5. (1941)
The Batman plays a lone hand. Batman #13. (The first time Bruce ended the Batman and Robin partnership and left Dick to take care of himself.) (1942)
Robin studies his lessons. Batman #18. (1943)
Bruce Wayne loses the guardianship of Dick Grayson. Batman #20. (1944)
Clay. Batman Black and White #6. (2014)
Don't know where, don't know when. Batman Black and White #1. (2013)
Dick Grayson, author. Batman #35. (1946)
The Clocks of Doom. Star Spangled Comics #70.
The man Batman refused to help! Star Spangled Comics #88.
A birthday for Batman. Star Spangled Comics #91.
Robin, the Boy Failure. DC #145. (Dick gets amnesia, and Bruce tries to get him to remember that he’s Robin, without telling him outright.) (1949).
The killer-dog of Gotham city. Star Spangled Comics #100. (1950)
The trial of Bruce Wayne. Batman #57. (1950)
Race of the century. DC #157. (1950)
Dick Grayson, detective. Star Spangled Comics #111. (1950)
The strange costumes of Batman. DC #165. (Dick’s first time as Batman.) (1950)
The robberies in the Batcave. DC #177. (1951)
Partner for Batman. Batman #65. (1951)
Batman II and Robin, junior. Batman #66. (1951)
The plainclothes Robin. Star Spangled Comics #112. (Batman forbids Dick from going out at as Robin; he finds creative ways to use it in other ways.) (1951)
Operation Escape. Star Spangled Comics #124. (1952)
The new team of Superman and Robin. World's Finest Comics #75. (With Batman out of commission, Robin teams up with Superman. Batman is a bit apprehensive about Dick’s joy.) (1955)
Batman, jr. DC #231. (1956)
The grown-up Boy Wonder. Batman #107. (1957)
The last days of Batman. Batman #125. (1959)

The Olsen-Robin team versus the Superman-Batman team. World's Finest Comics #141. (1964)
The thousand-and-one dooms of Mr Twister. The Brave and the Bold #54. (The first team-up of Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad – the first step towards the formation of the Teen Titans.) (1964)

Midnight raid of the Robin gang. DC #342. (1965)
The Round-Robin death threats. DC #366-367. (1967)
Batgirl breaks up the dynamic duo. DC #369. (1967)
The Nemesis from Batman's boyhood. DC #370. (1967)
Batman! Drop dead… twice. DC #378-379. (1968)
Geometry. Superman #700. (Dick goes out as Robin on his own, against Bruce's order. Superman has to fish him up out the harbour...) (2010)
Menace of the Motorcycle Marauders. Batman #202. (1968)
Operation blindfold. Batman #204-205. (1968)
Angel… or devil. Batman #216. (1969)
Prisoners of the Immortal world. World’s Finest Comics #200. (Dick had moved to Hudson University by now. Together with Superman and a pair of brothers, he's transported to a different world.) (1971)
Daughter of the Demon. Batman #232. (First appearance of Ra's al Ghul, who kidnaps Robin from Hudson as a test to see if Batman is worthy of Talia.) (1971)
Vengeance for a cop. Batman #234-236. (1971)
Night of the Reaper. Batman #237. (1971)
Earth - the monster maker. Justice League of America #91-92. (A story with characters from both Earth-One and Earth-Two, including the adult Robin from Earth-Two who is a member of the Justice Society of America.) (1971)
How many times can a Robin die? Batman #246. (A criminal sets out to revenge himself on Batman by setting up murders of lifelike Robin dummies; since he has kidnapped the real Robin, Batman can't know if the killings are the real thing.) (1972)
The return of the Flying Grayson. Batman #250. (1973)
Color me deadly. Batman #316. (1979)
The Iron solution. DC #487. (1980)
The Man in Black wears Green. DC #493. (1980)
The Lazarus Affair (plus). Batman #331-335. (Another story with Talia and Ra's al Ghul, but also about generation gaps and slum buildings. Robin is angrily opposed to Bruce being with Talia because he doesn't trust her; he seeks out Catwoman to help.) (1981)
Yesterday's heroes. Batman #339. (1981)
To kill a legend. Detective Comics #500. (The Phantom Stranger transports Batman and Robin to a parallel Earth where they have the chance to stop that world's Joe Chill from murdering the Waynes.) (1981)
Who is Donna Troy? New Teen Titans #38. (Dick helps Donna Troy, Wonder girl, to find out where she came from. A great detective story.) (1984)
The Judas contract (when Dick becomes Nightwing). The New Teen Titans # 39-40, Tales of the Teen Titans #41-44, Annual #3. (1984)
Nightwing Year One. Nightwing vol 2 # 101-106. (I honestly don't care much for this story, but it's good to know that it's one of several retellings of how Dick became Nightwing.) (2005)
A Little Nudge, in the Robin 80th Anniversary Special. (An alternate take on Dick leaving Robin to become Nightwing, where Bruce and Dick don’t split on hostile terms – Dick is just a bit annoyed. It is very unclear in what timeline, if any, this is supposed to fit, but I like it a lot better than the Post-Crisis/Pre-Flashpoint versions.) (2020)
Trivial Pursuits. New Teen Titans vol 2 # 32. (A nice breather, when the Titans try just to relax together. It goes as well as can be expected.) (1987)
Wrath Child. (A story from when Dick was fairly new as Nightwing.) Batman Confidential # 13-16. (2008)
Batman # 416. (First post-Crisis meeting with Jason Todd) (1988)
The Cheshire Contract. Action Comics Weekly # 613-618 (Dick helps Roy find his daughter.) (1988)
The New Titans # 55. (Dick learns about Jason's death when the Titans return to Earth after a long period in space. He goes to Bruce to talk and what follows is the infamous scene when Bruce hits Dick, says he should never have had a partner and tells Dick to leave and leave the keys with Alfred.) (1989)

The New Titans # 65. (Tim turns up at Dick's place to learn what it is to be Batman's partner.) (1990)
Total Chaos. (In issues of Deathstroke the Terminator, New Titans and Team Titans.) (Mirage, a woman from an alternate future and who has illusion casting powers, takes the form of Starfire and sleeps with Dick, who is shamed by his team members for being unfaithful to Kory, even though this is rape. So, an important fact to know but not something I would recommend to read.) (1992)
Knightfall Prodigal (Dick's first longer stint as Batman. And he takes care of Tim and the Manor on his own!) In Batman #512-514 and three other titles. (1994-1995)
Nightwing Alfred's Return (Kind of fun, when Dick seeks out Alfred, who left Bruce's service because Bruce wasn't taking care of himself, in London.) (1995)
Nightwing vol 1 # 1-4. (I don't love this, but it is a milestone in that it's the first Nightwing solo series, Dick momentarily decides to leave the hero business, and gets his by now classic fingerstripe suit.) (1995)

Matatoa. Batman: Gotham Knights # 16-17. (Bruce adopts Dick.) (2001)
Who Is Troia? The Titans (1999) # 23-25. (A visit from the Titan's children from the Kingdom Come universe.). (2001)
Retribution. Batman: Gotham Knights # 20-21. (2001)
Nightwing vol 2 # 64. (Nightwing as Santa's elf.) (2001)
Bruce Wayne: Murderer and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive (in several titles). (Dick refuses to believe that Bruce can be a murderer and it causes friction with for instance Tim. Also, a big fight between Dick and Bruce when the latter says he is going to abandon his Bruce identity.) (2002)
Nightwing vol 2 # 75. (Flashback's to Dick's early years with Bruce. Plus the first appearance of Tarantula (Catalina Flores; a controversial figure in Dick's history, she straddled the line between vigilante and villain.)) (2002)
Hush. Batman # 608–619. (# 615 for Dick, but it might be confusing only to read one issue.) (2002-2003)
The Obsidian Age. JLA vol 1 # 68-75. (The Justice League members disappear, Dick leads a new team for a few issues. In # 73, Bruce is quoted: "The only time I ever feel pride is when I look at Nightwing. Sometimes I think he's the only thing I ever did right."). (2002-2003)
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day # 1-3 (Donna is killed. Dick is devastated and declares that the Titans are finished.) (2003)
Nightwing vol 2 # 80-83. (Deathstroke is in Blüdhaven to kill someone close to Dick. Bruce asks when he will quit the force, Dick wants to stay as a cop, but when he saves Amy Rohrbach, she recognizes that Dick is Nightwing and fires him.) (2003)
Nightwing vol 2 # 86. (Dick, forced to rest after being injured, solves crimes on America's Most Wanted and drives Barbara up the wall.) (2003)
The Outsiders vol 3 # 1 (Roy talks Dick, who dissolved the Titans after Donna's death, into leading a new team, promising they will not be a family.) (2003)
Nightwing vol 2 # 87-100. (Definitely one of the darkest periods points in Dick's life pre-Flashpoint. Tarantula breaks up him and Barbara. Blockbuster destroys his circus, his home and kills people just for talking to Dick. Tarantula kills Blockbuster and Nightwing is too exhausted to prevent it, and afterwards, he has a panic attack and she rapes him (# 93). Not necessarily something I would recommend to read, but fans discuss it a lot.) (2003-2004)
The Outsiders vol 3 # 11 (Roy is angsting about going back to the hero business after narrowly surviving being shot to death, sparring and heart-to-heart with Dick follows.) (2004)

Silent partner. The Outsiders vol 3 # 21-23. (Dick goes ballistic when he realizes Batman has been funding the Outsiders, Roy admits Batman has been feeding him information. Only it wasn't Batman – it was Deathstroke in disguise.) (2005)
DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy # 1-4. (2005)
Nightwing vol 2 # 107–117. (Dick leaves Nightwing, starts working for the mob and trains Deathstroke's daughter. I think the author has some kind of resolution to the crisis Dick had gone through the last years in mind, but Infinite Crisis got in the way. Blüdhaven is destroyed in a nuclear explosion.) (2005-2006)
Infinite Crisis. (DC had planned to let Dick die, he is central to the story even if he's not very visible.) (2005-2006)
Targets. Nightwing vol 2 # 125-128. (Dick hunts for a day job in New York and gets buried alive, which leads to some retrospection on his behalf. There's also fights with a guy with a weaponized armour.) (2007)
The Brave and the Bold # 15. Nightwing and Hawkman. (Deadman, inside Hawkman, says that Dick Grayson is the one guy that every crimefighter trusts.) (2007)
Outsiders: Five of a Kind – Nightwing/Boomerang. (It ends with Batman telling Dick: "Go back to the good fight, Dick. Leave the bad fight to us.") (2007)
Freefall. Nightwing vol 2 # 140–146. (Dick starts freefalling as a new hobby; Bruce is not pleased. And he gets a new daytime job, as a museum curator. Oh, and there's Talia al Ghul, too.) (2008)
Robin # 175. (Some fun panels with flashbacks with Dick and Tim.) (2008)
Superman/Batman # 55. (Batman has got Superman’s powers while Superman loses his. When Batman starts to get out of control, Nightwing tries to stop him.) (2009)

Titans (2008) # 10. (Dick leaves the Titans because he needs to go back to Gotham and "take care of my other family." (2009)
Nightwing vol 2 # 152-153. (That time when Ra's al Ghul called Dick detective. And Dick packed up and left New York to move back to Gotham.) (2009)
Batman # 682. (Just for the line about how Dick made colour come into their monochrome lives ;-) ) (2009)
Detective Comics # 85, Batman # 684 (Dick mourning Bruce) (2009)
The Secret Six # 9. (Some of the members of the Secret Six feel they should be the new Batman.) (2009)
Battle for the Cowl # 1-3. (2009)
If you don't mind reading comics that are not in the main comic universe, there are also a lot of fun reading in comic books that are tie-ins to Batman The Animated Series, and in Batman '66 which builds on the tv show from 1966. There is also Dark Victory from 1999–2000 – and tiny Dick is adorable in Batman/Scarecrow: Year One from 2005. Dick has about two panels in Darwyn Cooke’s DC: The New Frontier from 2004, but I think it’s kind of worth reading just for those.

Which Work Am I A Bigger Fan Of? I Cannot Choose!
I have two works that I really like, and they are Transformers and Sonic The Hedgehog. Both enhanced my creativity, and I grew up with Transformers (the live-action films, anyway; but I got into G1 when I got into the 1980′s); they have extraterrestrials that are allies or enemies with humans (and they have anti-heroes as well (I’m looking at you, Armada Starscream and Shadow The Hedgehog)); and they have English and Japanese versions of their own media (the original Unicron Trilogy and Sonic X are all anime series in which the Japanese versions with English subtitles are better than the English dubs). I have been fans of both works for a couple years (I saw Transformers first, and then Sonic The Hedgehog).
However, I am debating whether I like one more than the other; I believe I am, but I am going to differentiate between these two works to see for myself. Here it goes; I am going to start with Transformers, first.
The first Transformers work I saw was the first live-action film directed by Michael Bay. It looked very realistic, and the graphics were nice. I saw two more live-action films, and they were okay, but the third film went downhill, especially since they killed off some of my favorite characters from there (especially Ironhide; I really liked that black truck, and Sentinel killed him). I don’t remember when I saw the 1986 film, but it is one of these factors that got me into the 1980′s (among The Transformers, in which that animated film was based on). I started to prefer G1 over Bayformers since their styles looked fantastic, and it is also how I got a little into Mecha anime (Golion/Dairugger/Voltron got me even more into Japanese anime).
I then looked to see if there are any other Mecha shows I would watch, and I remembered fans talking about Transformers Armada, and I searched via Anime News Network; when I saw that Ironhide was in there, as well as Starscream, I got the urge to watch it. I saw all 52 episodes of the show (called Micron Legend) with English subtitles, and I was hooked into it. Micron Legend became even more of my favorite Transformers work than even G1 because of many G1 callbacks, certain soundtracks that sounded 1980′s, and many complex characters from both sides. I then saw another show, in which it is called Energon (actually, it was Superlink), and I got as much hooked as I did with the other show, despite some flaws such as not giving certain characters enough screen time. I was upset when the characters from Micron Legend got killed off (especially Ironhide/Demolishor), but was amazed at some new characters, especially those that were based off of their G1 counterparts, such as Inferno, Lazerwave (homage to G1 Shockwave), Wheeljack, Springer, and Omega Supreme. I saw Galaxy Force (original version of Cybertron) once, and lost interest, despite some interesting characters such as Soundwave and Chromia (Thunderblast). Similarly, Headmasters made me lose interest, since some of the characters were really bland, and they were lacking some character development in some of the Transformers (and even humans).
Since the first Bayformers film was the one I liked a lot, I didn’t want to watch anymore live-action films until 2018, in which the Bumblebee film debuted. I was skeptical at first, until I got the chance to saw it; it was fantastic; the film was set in 1987, and it had many themes and styles of the 1980′s, and it stayed true to the G1 continuity (besides Micron Legend, Superlink, and Galaxy Force). And the villains were phenomenal, especially Shatter (ROTF Alice didn’t give me enough excitement for a believably evil Decepticon who is female (or at least feminine), she was too bland, in my opinion). And don’t forget the music, especially when Stan Bush’s song appeared in one scene where Bumblebee was encouraging his human friend, Charlie Watson, to dive off a cliff (which is safe, and has water).
Now let’s go with Sonic The Hedgehog. I have noticed some people playing the games, and I never got the hold of it until I noticed that there was an anime show based on the games (especially the Adventure series), and I decided to give it a watch. The anime was Sonic X, and it was in Japanese with English subtitles. I was blown away because of Sonic’s tendency to break the fourth wall and throw in English here and there, the graphics which looked similar to Micron Legend in many angles, one original character with his many racing supercars (Sam Speed), contains Mecha (usually by Dr. Eggman), the soundtrack, and, of course, Shadow The Hedgehog (the first time I understood that character was in this show). Also, the anime had many callbacks from the previous games (1991-2003; 2003 was when Sonic X was first broadcasted); and the Metarex saga gave me a feel from the part where Unicron debuted in Micron Legend.
One of my cousins have many different Sonic games, since he is a huge fan of them. He had spin-off games as well; one of them was Shadow’s own game. The first time I took interest was when I heard some fans talk about him using guns; at first, I thought it was a joke, until I saw for myself. Many die-hard Sonic fans don’t like the 2005 game, but I certainly liked it, especially after I saw Sonic X; it was dark and edgy, yes, but it also gave the main character more depth and characterization, he can use firearms if he chooses to, and drives vehicles such as motorcycles and cars; I even have the option to play it in English or Japanese (of course with English subtitles for both).
I also did some reviews for three Sonic TV shows during the 1990′s. Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog came to mind, especially this one episode, Zoobotnik, in which it featured a villainess, Katella The Huntress, who is the most underrated Sonic character of all time. I found her costume appealing (including the circlet she wears on her forehead), and I found it amusing to see her with Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (I believe this is the only time I will ship Eggman with anyone else; besides Sera/Sara from the OVA, of course). The English shows were not as appealing, but at least I got some insight after watching a few episodes.
I think I like both works because they are related in many ways, even though the Transformers originated in the 1980′s, and Sonic The Hedgehog originated in the 1990′s, among many other differences. I really like extraterrestrial characters, but I also like Mecha robots (especially sentient robots). Maybe I like Transformers even more than Sonic The Hedgehog.
Another thing these two have in common is their voice actors, who appeared in both works; seiyuu are more prominent. Here is a list of English voice actors first, and then I will go with the Japanese voices:

Like I said, Sonic and Transformers have a lot in common, but they are unique in their own ways. Maybe I like Transformers the most because it was from the 1980′s (which, by the way, is my favorite decade). I wasn’t too much of a 1990′s fan, but I did like Sonic, which originated in the 1990′s. So, I suppose Transformers is the winner, and Sonic The Hedgehog is in second place.
Well, that is all I will be saying for now. I will be posting more soon, but I have other things to do, as well. Stay tuned for more posts.
This is FirebirdTransAm68 signing out.

The legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, 40 years after plane crash tragedy
yahoo
It’s hard to believe that it has four decades have passed since one of rock’s best-known tragedies occurred. On Oct. 20, 1977, a chartered Convair CV-240 plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd — in the midst of a headlining tour and having released their fifth album, Street Survivors, three days prior — crashed in a Gillsburg, Mississippi swamp after running out of fuel.
The toll was dire. Three band members (Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, Steve’s older sister) perished; the others were all severely injured. Drummer Artimus Pyle, one of the few survivors able to walk, staggered out for help and was allegedly shot at by an alarmed farmer. Record label MCA scrambled to replace Skynyrd’s Street Survivors album cover, which eerily forecasted the accident by depicting the band members engulfed in flames.
The wreckage of a twin engine Convair 240 plane lies in a wooded area near McComb, Miss., on Oct. 20, 1977. The small plane had 26 people on board, and six were killed in the crash, including three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. (Photo: AP)
Although the crash remains now and forever the darkest centerpiece in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legend — as well as a breeding ground for gruesome urban legends surrounding the various members’ demises — fans know quite well it’s far from the first or last tragedy the definitive Southern rockers endured. In fact, Lynyrd Skynyrd have managed to earn the dubious distinction of “unluckiest band in history” over the years.
It is indisputably the creepiest prediction, but the fiery Street Survivors cover wasn’t the first prediction of deadly events for Skynyrd. Trouble began for the hard-partying band a year before the plane crash, when guitarist Gary Rossington plowed his brand-new car into a tree along a Jacksonville, Florida road. He survived the incident and admitted he was under the influence at the time, prompting bandmates Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins to write “That Smell” — an ominous tune warning, “Say you’ll be all right come tomorrow, but tomorrow may not be here for you.” (Ironically, Rossington, now 65, is the sole member of the original lineup still performing in the band.)

After the plane crash, Skynyrd’s surviving members disbanded to recover from their extensive injuries. (Pyle managed to escape with just broken ribs; Collins suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck and damage to his right arm that nearly resulted in amputation; Rossington broke his arms, legs, wrists, ankles, and pelvis; keyboardist Billy Powell suffered severe lacerations on his face and right leg; and bassist Leon Wilkeson broke his left arm so badly and permanently, he had to relearn how to hold his instrument.) As might be expected, Street Survivors, became one of their greatest hits in the wake of the spotlight on the events. With the exception of one instrumental version of “Free Bird” at Charlie Daniels’s Volunteer Jam V in January 1979, “Lynyrd Skynyrd” would not emerge again for a decade.
The remaining band members continued to make music through the ’80s under various configurations, most notably the Rossington-Collins Band, who took special pains to distance the new outfit from a “reborn” Skynyrd tag by recruiting a female lead singer, Dale Krantz. The new project did not include drummer Artimus Pyle who — in another stroke of Skynyrd misfortune — had badly shattered his leg in a motorcycle accident.
The Rossington-Collins Band lineup eventually was doomed as well. Shortly before they were slated to embark on their debut tour in 1980, Collins’s wife Kathy died unexpectedly from a miscarriage-related hemorrhage. The tragedy effectively splintered the band by 1982 and threw the grieving Collins into a spiral of substance abuse. Collins made another attempt by starting the Allen Collins Band, which included Wilkeson and Powell and released one album in 1983 to lukewarm response. Three years later, an intoxicated Collins crashed his car in Jacksonville, killing his girlfriend Debra Lizama Watts and rendering him paralyzed from the waist down and with limited use of his upper body.
At this point, talk of a Skynyrd-proper reconfiguration had been in the works for some time. By 1987, it seemed solidified: The late Van Zant was replaced by brother Johnny, while Rossington, Pyle, Powell, and Wilkeson resumed their former duties. Collins, who was charged with manslaughter for Watts’s death, took position as musical director of the group — and, as part of his plea bargain, addressed the band’s audience every night on tour from his wheelchair on the dangers of drunk driving.
Yet more despair was in store, however. Collins was felled by pneumonia in 1989, and died shortly after in 1990. He was 37.
Although the worst seemed to be behind them by the ’90s, the reunited Skynyrd lineup’s luck did not endure. The members either left, were asked to leave, or passed away. Wilkeson died in 2001 of chronic liver and lung disease; he was only 49. Powell also died young, at age 56, of an apparent heart attack in 2009. Original drummer Bob Burns, who played with Skynyrd from 1964-1975, also died in 2015 after crashing his car into a tree. The result has been a long string of replacements, leaving Rossington as the sole representative of the classic Skynyrd lineup. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most recent album, Last of a Dyin’ Breed, came out in 2012.
yahoo
Pyle is still alive, but has not been part of the band’s roster since 1991. This year, Lynyrd Skynyrd sued him over his plans to make a Skynyrd biopic — initially called Free Bird, until a cease-and-desist order forced a title change to Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash.
Despite their long history of misfortune, Lynyrd Skynyrd do have one shining strength: their undeniable and enduring longevity. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and although only one original member remains, they continue to have a significant presence in both the rock and country worlds.

You going? Petersen Automotive Museum PFAFFENHAUSEN SPEED SHOP THE RUF GALLERY RUF Automobile GmbH Hagerty McKeel Hagerty
In 1939, Alois Ruf Sr. founded AUTO RUF, a general service garage located in the Bavarian town of Pfaffenhausen, Germany. The industrious Ruf Sr. repaired every vehicle imaginable, even building his own bus from scratch. One day, while driving his bus, a Porsche 356 crashed in front of him and Ruf Sr. came to the rescue of the driver and the car, saving both and returning the little red Porsche to the road some time later. It was then that his love affair with Porsche began; a love which was passed on to his son, Alois Ruf Jr. When Ruf Jr. assumed directorship of the company in 1974, he vowed to continue the pursuit of this passion, and just one year later, they released the first RUF-enhanced Porsche. This exhibition celebrates that passion and is the the inaugural exhibit to launch in the Petersen’s new Legends of the Vault gallery. Eight vehicles, curated by Patrick Long and Jeff Zwart tell the story of the legendary brand.

This is the new Bell Custom 500 SE Haro motorcycle helmet, it’s limited to just 250 units worldwide, and it has an 80s-inspired shell design created by BMX legend Bob Haro.
Bob Haro was one of the early leading lights in the BMX world, he was one of the best BMX Freestylers in the world and he created the sport of BMX Flatlanding. Interestingly, before riding BMX Haro won over 50 trophies riding motocross, and he worked with Steven Spielberg during the filming of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” as a stunt rider.
Haro retired from the world of competitive BMX in 1985 due to injuries, he was inducted into the American Bicycle Association Hall Of Fame in 1987, and in 1993 he founded Bob Haro Design. In the years since he’s been working on projects around the world, including choreographing the Dove bike sequence in the Opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Macross and Escaflowne Creator Shares the Secrets of his Genre-Defining Creativity
Shoji Kawamori may be the most famous name in mecha, having invented one of the most famous franchises of the genre in Macross, as well as one of the rare western mecha hits in Escaflowne, and designing mecha for everything from Eureka Seven to Patlabor to Outlaw Star to the Armored Core franchise. Approaching the 40th anniversary of his anime debut, and with another original anime in Juushinki Pandora soon to premiere, Kawamori visited Otakon 2018 as a guest.
The ever-industrious creator used the opportunity to deliver two panels, the first was a fascinating look into his creative process, inspirations, and creative philosophy based on the concept of transformative ideas titled “Originality & Mecha Design” and the second a comprehensive “History of Macross.” I also had the pleasure of interviewing Kawamori. By the end of the weekend I had over four hours of recorded audio of Kawamori providing an autobiography of his creative life. I’ve gathered notable points from all three events into a rough chronology including the highlights!
Kawamori began both panels by touching on his early life, born in the rural Ecchu Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture where he lived until he was three. He experienced a shock when his family moved to the city of Yokohama and he first saw a train, which he credits as the moment he became interested in machines. The story bore a strikingly similar to an aside from one of Kowamori’s anime Earth Maiden Arjuna, in which the chief of a nuclear power plant claimed witnessing a train as the moment he developed a passion for science that lead him to become a nuclear technician.
You may be familiar with a certain film inspired by Thunderbirds' style
When it comes to his fascination with mecha, Kawamori’s recounted watching Thunderbirds as a child. He jokingly claimed his preference for transforming mecha may have come out of necessity. His father bought him Fischertechnik blocks which, while more versatile than many of it competitors in the toy industry, were prohibitively expensive. Left with a limited amount of materials that provided many points of articulation eventually resulted in him building designs that had multiple variations to maximize their use.
Kawamori’s inspirations were diverse and unexpected, often credited both aesthetically and holistically contributing toward some aspect of his eventually design philosophy. Kawamori was impressed with the Isuzu 117 Coupe, designed by a legend of the automotive industry, Giorgetto Giugiaro, and credits that specific model with his realization that a designer can have influence over the final product. Another personal inspiration was the ambition of the Apollo project, which he watched on TV in the 3rd grade.
He was very open about his desire for originality and revealed an intensely competitive mindset, not only with other creators, but also himself. Too proud to build the pre-designed model kits of his peers, he learned to make his own out of paper. Kawamori recounted that he and Kazutaka Miyatake were locked in competition for over a year that ultimately lead to the design of Macross’ unique GERWALK. Kawamori also shared how near Macross had come to ending in 1987.
Having made a TV series, movie, and OVA, Kawamori felt he’d touched on each possibility for the franchise and didn’t want to cover old ground. With the encouragement of a friend and several years worth of pleading by Studio Nue to continue the franchise, Kawamori decided he’d give himself a week to either completely revolutionize the series or let it die if he was unable to come up with any ideas.
Describing the outcome in almost apologetic terms, Kawamori admitted he came up with not one, but two ideas. In his last effort to avoid returning to Macross, he demanded Nue allow him to make both or threatened he would make neither. To his surprise, they enthusiastically agreed, leading to Macross 7 and Macross Plus as two completely new takes on the core concept. Kawamori mentioned that, at the time, his peers joked about the idea of a virtual idol becoming popular, to which he believes hisstory has shown that they "vastly underestimated the power of otaku."
Despite working creatively on everything from settings to narratives to the literal nuts and bolts of their robots across mediums including anime, video games, and toys, Kawamori has managed to find enough time to ponder the nature of creativity itself. He described what he believes are the two types of originality, which he referred to as “Inspirational Originality” essentially a foundationally transformative idea that inspires others and “Unique Personality” which involves putting a personalized take on an existing idea.
Perspective was one of his described necessities for design, with him going so far as to stand up on his chair as an allegory to how climbing in a tree as a child provided him with a unique viewpoint, something is entourage seemet do disapprove of. He claimed his new position allowed him to look at the same things in a different way, adding that the inherent risk of falling tends to drive the brain into a mode of dynamic thought.
Practically, he used the example of his original design for the GERWALK. Again using a physical example, he ran to either side of the stage to display what had inspired the design, getting into his bent-leg skiing stance, he said that he realized mechs have only been given straight leg designs up until that point and he eventually settled upon a digitigrade “reverse-knee” model to give them a unique silhouette.
In a more general sense, Kawamori has taken steps to develop his unique viewpoint. He spoke of many trips he has taken to the different corners of rural Asia. Originally meant as an escape from the overwhelming amount of media he was assaulted with during his time in America, he found many of his perspectives about the world challenged during his original visit. During a power outage in a village, he noticed the children seemed happier playing on their own than they had looked watching television, causing him to wonder if the introduction of modern amenities was truly improving quality of life as we believed.
He also described something of a spiritual awakening over the years, witnessing individuals who seemed to have perceptions that couldn’t quite be explained by modern science: sherpas that could spot the expression on a mans face when they were little more than a speck in the distance, or martial artists who seemed to be able to read things about other people through sight alone.
Kawamori spoke of the role he believed the subconscious plays in creation, believing that the iconic design for the TIE fighters of Star Wars must have grown out the mind from the constant view of the similarly-shaped rear axle of semi-trucks on American highways. Later, he discussed the concept of synchronicity, again in reference to Star Wars, as the reverse-legged AT-STs were being developed around the same time he was originally creating the GERWALK, leaving an open question to the audience. How could two people, separated by thousands of miles, be inspired to create the same design at nearly the same time?
For all of his higher concepts about the origins of creativity within the human mind, Kawamori has developed a remarkably practical framework for his approach to design work. He pulled up several slides (regrettably photography was prohibited) on considerations regarding the purpose, setting, and medium of the work he will be designing for, listing off concepts like location, culture, physical laws, level of technology, story themes, and the purpose of individual mechs when ideating their designs. Focusing on these differences lead to the more realistically aerodynamic Valkyries of Macross vs the excess of the magically powered Vector Machines in Aquarion.
Taking it a step further, he also spoke of the medium that his design work would be in. For toys the transformations would need to be realistic and simple enough to easily performed by anyone. Designs for anime required as few lines a possible to make drawing thousands of cels a simpler process whereas manga had fewer limitations. With video games, he spoke of his work with Armored Core, where he paid special attention to the array of boosters on the back of each mech since that’s the part the player would be staring at for the majority of gameplay. Every project has unique opportunities and limitations.
Along with his panels came a demonstration of the transformation from one of his designs in Juushinki Pandora from motorcycle to mech without compromising the cockpit. He held up a model he’d made out of legos and other materials which served as his prototype. In our interview, Kawamori he admitted he’s a rarity among mech designer making 3D models, mentioning Gundam’s Ogawara as the only other creator he knew of to use this method.
Kawamori’s panels were enlightening, their structure and his articulate thoughts regarding the nature of creativity showing an individual of exceptional mental meticulousness. When presented with a task, he’d break down every aspect, consideration, and approach, to determine the best course toward a solution, even stepping back from this mental feat to asses his own thought processes and similarly deconstruct them in his relentless pursuit of optimization.
Matching his intelligence is a relentless work ethic that has evolved into a massive ouvre over the course of his nearly 40 years in the industry. If you’re a fon of anime, it’s nearly impossible not to have been exposed directly to his work. He touched almost all the greatest hits of the Suncoast-era ‘90s anime boom, including Outlaw Star, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy bebop. Into the 2000s Kawamori's work continued to appear in high profile anime such as RahXephon, Eureka Seven, and even his own Escaflowne. Kawamori’s original work Macross could be described as just the sort of transformative originality he discussed in his presentation, becoming one of the most recognizable franchises in anime. If you’re planning on playing Devil May Cry 5 next year, he designed the V's robotic arms, the "Devil Breakers."
It was a rare treat to see Kawamori stateside and he truly went above and beyond in putting together his own panels for the trip, seeming to enjoy the opportunity to discuss his past and his process. Despite his nearly four decades of work, he still moved around the stage with an excess of enthusiasm and energy. Just watching him for five minutes, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be stopping any time soon.

Drag Racing
The following article will hope to reach out to a varied audience with the aim to help people that are affiliated with or know about the sport of Drag Racing to understand it more and its history. There will be discussions on various aspects of Drag Racing. However, we are mainly focusing on the monocycle division of the sport. We do hope you get to understand the point of view of another and if there is anything that you would like us to expand upon, as this is only a short article and we are willing to offer a full extensive in-depth article, just let us know through our contacts. We will be happy to provide all the info you need to know.
Just like most sports drag racing is beloved by numerous fans all over the globe. Various events are centered on drag racing as well as huge gatherings that make it the main attraction. The supporters of the sport are always cheering on their heroes and hoping that they too one day get to meet such brave and daring men and women. However for those that are not entirely familiar with the sport of drag racing, which is quite odd might we add, here is a little rundown.
What Is Drag Racing?
So what is drag racing? Well, you know how it looks so cool when a rider drags or drifts his wheels when they are about to drive off? Yeah, that only in racing form. How amazing is that!
Drag racing is probably the best fusing of two things since mobile phones and touchscreens. It is as impressive as it sounds and really fun to watch. However, to become a drag race driver that will take a heck of a lot then just wanting to look cool. There is a lot of skill involved in drag racing, and it is quite dangerous just like any other form of racing vehicles. Usually, you can see such a race as the main events of motorcycle rallies like the Sturgis 2018 or the Llangollen International Motorcycle Festival. Those are just for fun and at times charities but if you really want to see the best that this sport has to offer to make sure that you follow the “Pro Stock Motorcycle.”
That is where you will get to see the best that this sport has to offer fight for first place.
History:
Don’t think of drag racing as a newbie sport. Drag racing goes all the way back to the 1980s. With its first champion season taking place in on 1987. The competition was dominated through the years by bikes manufactured by the well-known brand Suzuki. However, just last year the raining champs were overthrown by the upcoming goliaths Harley Davidson.
One of the most successful names to ever come out of drag racing is Dave Schultz, who dominated the drag racing world. However the legend Schultz died from cancer in 2001. And tragically his son, Brian Schultz passed away as well in 2004. The brain was in a car crash from which he couldn't survive.
The love of the sport:
People from all over the world have an admiration for all the men and women that have dedicated their lives to this dangerous sport. We can’t help but look at them in awe as they do what we can only dream of accomplishing. We see no fear in the eyes of these brave souls, what we see is the hunger and dive that leads them over the wall of worry and on to the path of victory as they risk their very lives, so that their names might live on in the hearts of their fans everywhere.

""Car Accident, Insurance won't pay up .. Any advice ?""
I was in an car accident two weeks ago, the other driver hit the side of my car because she did not make her stop. I tried to stop however, she was still able to hit the left side of my car. Police arrived but he recommended for us both to file a claim on each others insurance and that they would settle the problem themselves. My insurance company came to take photos of the damages and asked us what had happen. I received letters a couple of days ago, one from my insurance and the others person insurance. My insurance denied her claim because the damages demonstrated that it was her fault. However, i also received a letter from her insurance, that they also denied my claim. I called her insurance and they told me that it they weren't going to pay for any of the damages made to my car, because the the collision shows that it was my fault. I told them i was going to get my lawyer . and they told me i could do what ever i wanted. So, anyone has any advice ? **there was also a witness (a neighbor) who saw what happen**""

Renting an Apartment: Is this cost per month affordable for my budget?
The apartment's rent is $750 a month...I'm living with 2 other roommates, so we are dividing that cost three ways. We'll each owe $250 a month...plus electric ($35 - $50 a month), plus cable t.v. ($30 - $40 a month), plus WiFi internet ($30 - $40 a month). So all together, each of us will owe around $275 a month, roughly. I make $32,000 a year before taxes and health insurance...I make a $250 car payment per month, and car insurance is $1000 (+ or -) for 6 months. This is my first time renting (I'm 20), so I want to be sure that I can afford this apartment.""

""Did not want to renew the car insurance, they did it anyway.?""
Our car insurance was expiring on the 28th of may. We had all the premium paid by the end of march. At the end of april we got rid of the car. Couple of days later we received renewal documents from the insurance company. We have been with those company for 2 years, we didn' t make any claims. For the past 2 years we were paying 102 pounds a month. The renewal documents were saying that we only got the 1 year NCB and that our monthly instalment is going to be 140 pounds a month. I rang them on the 6th of may and said that first of all we have 2years of NCB and we want the documents from them proving that , second of all I have asked how come the instalment went from 100 pounds to 140 pounds a month the nice guy explained that there was a mistake (in their system 1 year of NBC was showing) and now it has been sorted and we are going to receive the proof of 2 years NBC and the monthly instalment is going to be 100 pounds. I thanked the guy and said that we do not wish to extend the insurance and I am only waiting for the 2years of NBC. He said ok and I thought it was sorted. We went on holiday abroad on 21st of May and got back on the 7th of June and imagine my surprise when in the post I have found the letter from insurance company with the certificate of insurance enclosed and them thanking me for deciding to stay with them and saying that my monthly instalment is 130 pounds!!! (because apparently i decided not to the the brakedown cover that i had before!!!!) I decided to call them first thing in the morning, but befor I did it i checked my account and of course they have already debited it with 130 pounds. I called them and the woman there explained that they were never informed of not extending the policy and that of course they have it registered that i phoned on the 6th of may with questions but they called me and left a message on my voicemail and apparently i never rang them back. She explained that all I have to do is to send the certificate of motor insurance back and then i will get the money. So i did. Once they got it they rang me saying that now they want the proof of selling/scrapping the car, WHY???I do not think it is any of their business. Especially that as far as I am concerned I am not cancelling the policy , I never wanted it. It is all their fault they did not listen. Can I do something about it, I have also got the funny feeling they are not going to give me full refund that they are gonna come up with something.""

My car insurance is up for renewal in January and I have been looking quotes up on the internet. But when it asks for the period of licence held for I put 0 years as I passed my test in July but my car was insured in my name from january when I was on a provisional. I then put that I have 1 years no claims as I havn't claimed in the year that I've had the car insurance but it won't accept it as it says I can' have no claims that is greater than the period i've held my license for. So do I put that i've had my license for a year (which would include the provisional period) or do I put that I havn't got any no claims. Thank's in advance.

Giving the BMW R nineT the Paris-Dakar treatment
What’s the most iconic BMW motorcycle from the past fifty years? The R80G/S Paris-Dakar would have to be near the top of the list, even if you’re not into ADV bikes. The 32-liter tank, signed by Dakar legend Gaston Rahier and fitted with dual petcocks, has got to be one of the most recognizable tanks of all time.
The R80G/S P-D also introduced many people to BMW’s famous motorsport livery. It’s a color scheme that is still being emulated today, from the R nineT Urban G/S we tested a few days ago to the limited edition Les Ateliers Ruby x BMW Motorrad 90th anniversary helmet that sits on my desk.
These days, you need luck (and deep pockets) to put a R80 G/S P-D in your garage—only around 3,000 were built. But you can get a big helping of the classic Paris-Dakar style and practicality with a new kit from the Italian specialist Unit Garage, designed to fit the popular R nineT.
Unit Garage is run by Fabio Marcaccini, who knows a bit about Paris-Dakar bikes: from 1987 to 1992 he piloted Yamahas in five successive events. “In the early mornings I was waiting in line for the start of the special stages, standing next to BMW pilots like Herbert Schek or Raymond Loizeaux,” Fabio recalls.
“I didn’t understand how you could compete with bikes like that—I came from circuit racing. But after finishing with the races, I tried a friend’s BMW R80 G/S Paris-Dakar [above]—and it was just love. It was a simple bike that went slow, but with a charm that immediately made you dream. And so a few months later, I decided to go on a 23,500 km overland trip on board the mythical R80—from Italy to India.
“Spending months on a bike travelling around the world leaves its mark on you. And so that P-D tank is like a ‘dream container’ for me, and this Unit Garage R nineT ‘Pd’ is the logical consequence of that dream. Thirty liters of pure passion, the letters ‘Paris-Dakar,’ the colors, and adventure written with a capital A.”
Although the R nineT has been a smash hit for BMW, it’s not designed for long distance travel. So the core of the Unit Garage kit is a new 30-liter tank, made from plastic and able to accommodate the standard pump, fuel cap and all other internal parts. And it’s very different to the tank fitted to BMW’s own Urban G/S.
“The stock Urban G/S is a nice looking bike,” says Fabio’s business partner, industrial designer Michiel Verstockt. “But we aren’t constrained by mass production, so we could make the fuel tank about ten centimeters shorter—which allows you to sit closer to the bars, something that really improves the handling.”
As well as the tank, the Base Kit includes a comfortable single seat, new side panels and a luggage rack. The kit fits all nine T models, but definitely looks better with the 19-inch front wheel of the Scrambler and Urban G/S. The parts can be mounted in a few hours on the standard brackets and attachments, without irreversible modifications. It’s totally bolt-on.
“Our biggest goal is to make parts that are easy to mount,” says Michiel. “To get everything to fit together, we start by scanning the complete bike in 3D. This helps a lot in designing things like mounting brackets, side panels, and the underside of the fuel tank.”
“Then we make things by hand, because that lets you judge the proportions better—you can move things around. We made a clay model of the tank by hand and mock-ups of the seat and luggage rack.”
You can supplement the kit with Unit Garage’s own range of bars, exhausts, crash bars, and suspension upgrades. The bike in these images is running Continental TKC80 tires and Unit Garage’s own 1:2:1 High Pipe in titanium (there’s a stainless version available too). The rear shock is an Öhlins, and the forks are fully adjustable Öhlins too.
The bars shown here are Unit Garage’s own ‘Ergo’ design, which has a more relaxed inclination while keeping the height of the original. If you want extra height, go for the ‘Comfort’ bend.
If you’re planning a big trip, you’ll also need luggage. Unit Garage have bags made from 18 ounce Scottish waxed cotton, waxed suede, or naturally tanned leather from Italy. “It’s solid stuff that ages well, that becomes better with every trip,” says Michiel.
If you’re not sold on the angular looks of most modern ADV bikes, but want an air-cooled machine with a proven motor and long distance capability, it looks like Unit Garage have got you covered. The kit will be formally launched later this year at the EICMA show, with pricing confirmed at the same time. There will be enough fairings, grilles, and racks to turn the R nineT into a practical intercontinental express.
It’s giving us an itch to pack some panniers and hit the road. Or, as a German-speaker would say, a serious case of wanderlust.
