About World Blood Donor Day:

Transfusion of blood and blood products save millions of lives every year. Blood and blood products are essential components in the proper management of women suffering from bleeding associated with pregnancy and childbirth; children suffering from severe anemia due to malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions; victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters and accidents; as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures. Although the need for blood and blood products is universal, there is a marked difference in the level of access to safe blood and blood products across and within countries. In many countries, blood services face the additional challenge of making sufficient blood and blood products available, while also ensuring its quality and safety.

In May 2005, during the Fifty-Eighth World Health Assembly, ministers of health from across the world made a unanimous declaration of commitment and support towards voluntary blood donation. Through resolution WHO 58.13, they designated World Blood Donor Day as an annual event to be held each year on 14 June. The resolution furthermore urges Member States to implement, and support well organized, nationally-coordinated and sustainable blood programmes with appropriate regulatory oversight. The support requires that governments provide adequate financing for high-quality blood donation services and for the expansion of these services so that sufficient safe blood can be collected to meet the needs of patients. In 2009, experts in transfusion medicine, policy-makers and nongovernmental representatives from 40 countries formulated the Melbourne Declaration, which set up a goal for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.

World Blood Donor Day History:

It was first initiated and established to be celebrated annually on 14th of June by “the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies” in the year 2004. World Blood Donor Day was officially established by the WHO with its 192 Member States in the month of May in 2005 at the 58th World Health Assembly in order to motivate all the countries worldwide to thank the blood donors for their precious step, promote voluntary, safe and unpaid blood donations to ensure the sufficient blood supplies.

Who Can Give Blood?

Most people can give blood if they are in good health. There are some basic requirements one need to fulfill in order to become a blood donor. Below are some basic eligibility guidelines:

Age

You are aged between 18 and 65.

In some countries national legislation permits 16–17 year-old to donate provided that they fulfill the physical and hematological criteria required and that appropriate consent is obtained.

In some countries, regular donors over the age of 65 may be accepted at the discretion of the responsible physician. The upper age limit in some countries are 60.

Weight

You weigh at least 50 kg.

In some countries, donors of whole blood donations should weigh at least 45 kg to donate 350 ml ± 10%.

Health

You must be in good health at the time you donate.

You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection.

If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure. If the body piercing was performed by a registered health professional and any inflammation has settled completely, you can donate blood after 12 hours.

If you have visited the dentist for a minor procedure you must wait 24 hours before donating; for major work wait a month.

You must not donate blood If you do not meet the minimum hemoglobin level for blood donation:

A test will be administered at the donation site. In many countries, a hemoglobin level of not less than 12.0 g/dl for females and not less than 13.0 g/dl for males as the threshold.

Travel: World Blood Donor Day

Travel to areas where mosquito-borne infections are endemic, e.g. malaria, dengue and Zika virus infections, may result in a temporary deferral.

Many countries also implemented the policy to defer blood donors with a history of travel or residence for defined cumulative exposure periods in specified countries or areas, as a measure to reduce the risk of transmitting variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) by blood transfusion.

Behaviors

You must not give blood:

If you engaged in “at risk” sexual activity in the past 12 months

Individuals with behaviors below will be deferred permanently:

Have ever had a positive test for HIV (AIDS virus)

Have ever injected recreational drugs.

In the national blood donor selection guidelines, there are more behavior eligibility criteria. Criteria could be different in different countries.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Following pregnancy, the deferral period should last as many months as the duration of the pregnancy.

It is not advisable to donate blood while breast-feeding. Following childbirth, the deferral period is at least 9 months (as for pregnancy) and until 3 months after your baby is significantly weaned (i.e. getting most of his / her nutrition from solids or bottle feeding).

About one in seven people entering a hospital need blood, and the short lifespan of blood collected also means a constant blood donation supply is necessary. Red blood cells have a shelf life of up to 42 days, while platelets have a shorter shelf life of five to seven days.

Specialty donors are donors whose blood can be used for specific recipients and are usually in high demand. People with an AB-negative blood type have the rarest blood type in the world, and these donors are unique because their plasma is transfusable into patients of any blood type.

You are also a speciality donor if your blood type is O-negative, a universal red-cell donor for people with any blood type. Blood donors with this type a relatively rare and provide the most in-demand blood type used in emergencies and situations where a patient’s blood type is unknown.

January 23, 2021: The Fast and the Furious (2001)

Car movie weekend continues!

So, Drive was definitely more of a straight-up action movie with driving scenes. I can assume that this movie’s the exact reverse, with more driving than other types of action. But, first...truth time. I’ve never seen this movie...but I have seen a Fast and Furious movie. To be specific...

Yeah, that’s the last one, The Fate of the Furious. See, my girlfriend is a HUGE fan of the franchise, so we saw that in theaters on a date. It should be noted, again, that this is the only film I’ve seen in the franchise. That is, of course, until today!

I actually enjoyed the last movie, so hopefully I’ll like the first. Ive also heard that the franchise has changed DRASTICALLY since the original movie. So, let’s get into it, and watch the birth of the Family, shall we? SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Recap

A hijacking is taking place on the Los Angeles highway, as a delivery truck full of TVs and other technology is intercepted by an automobile gang using grappling hooks. Cool.

The next day, a guy in an electric green car (that I want, and would name Acid Storm) is doing a speed test in his car. This is Brian Spilner (Paul Walker), who goes to a place called Torretto’s for a sandwich. It’s namesake is Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) who waits in the back of the bar. His sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) mans the bar, and is sought by Brian.

This is to the chagrin of Vince (Matt Schulze), a potential rival for Mia’s affections. Along with Jesse (Chad Lindberg), Leon (Johnny Strong), and his girlfriend Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), he’s a part of Dominic’s crew. Vince begins a fight with Brian over Mia, and Dominic intervenes, telling Brian not to come back to his place, threatening his job at one of his friend’s establishments.

That night, Brian goes to a local street race, which is run by Dominic. Brian enters the buy-in for the race by putting Acid Storm (Brian’s Car) up for collateral. Using complex nitrous oxide systems, or NOS, the racers begin.

Brian uses a liiiiiiiittle too much of the NOS, and while Acid Storm certainly goes faster, it completely craps out in the process, causing him to lose. As Dominic is chewing him out for his poor driving, and is about to take Acid Storm, the cops make their way to the illegal street race, causing everyone involved to scatter.

Dom’s nearly caught, but Brian picks him up, saving him in the process with some slick driving. In the process, it’s revealed that Brian spent two years in juvie, while Dom spent two years in Lompoc, a federal prison, and didn’t have a great time there. In the process of fleeing, they’re saved, then held hostage by Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), the leader of a Vietnamese gang, alongside his cousin Lance (Reggie Lee). They destroy Acid Storm in the process.

Dom returns to his place with Brian, where a party is taking place. He chews out the rest of the gang for leaving him behind, then leaves to go upstairs with Letty. As Vince is about to start a fight, Mia steps in, and offers to take Brian home.

The next day, however, he’s arrested by the cops, for seemingly no reason. And that leads to...a surprise! Brian’s an undercover cop, forking for the LAPD and the FBI! Surprise! His real name is Brian O’Conner, so I’ll stick with Brian. The mission is to discover who’s hijacking the trucks, and Toretto is the number one suspect.

Brian brings a new car to Toretto, a beaten up wreck with an excellent engine. Toretto brings Brian on officially as a part of his gang, which immediately puts off Vince. They fix up the car together, and Dom invites everybody over for dinner. This leads to Mia turning Vince down for Brian, which naturally pisses Vince off.

At Brian’s other OTHER job, at a local customization garage, where Hector (Noel Gugliemi), the organizer of the street races, asks him to give him three sets of parts for three identical cars. Whiiiiiiich sounds like the gangsters. And they aren’t part of Dominic’s crew or Johnny’s. I’m calling it now, it’s these guys.

Later that night, Brian breaks into a garage to investigate, but he’s caught by Vince and Dom. He makes an excuse that he’s trying to figure out what the competitors have for vehicles, while Vince insists that he’s a cop, but the Bluff check appears to work on Dom, who must have a lower Will than Vince.

The three end up breaking into Johnny’s place, where Brian sees the stolen TVs. They also notice that their cars have no engines in them. But as they’re investigating, Johnny and Lance show up with a hostage, an auto supplies fence who hasn’t brought their engines to them. They oilboard him (gross), and he gives up the location. Johnny sucks. And Dom’s group sees all of it.

The next day, Brian gives his information to his cop allies (Ted Levine and Thom Barry), who also accuse Brian of falling for Mia, which could cloud his judgment. While they want to move on Johnny and Dominic, he convinces them to wait a few days.

Dominic and Brian are working together, when Dominic espouses some of his past. His father was a stock car racer who died in a terrible accident, due to the interference of a rival driver. Having seen his father die, and blaming Linder, he beat Linder savagely, crippling him for life. It also prevented Dominic from racing professionally, and landed him in jail, bringing him into his current lifestyle.

Mia and Brian officially go on a date, and seem to hit it off. Mia seems to be a talented driver all on her own, but that’s not the focus of the night. The hijackers hit again, and Brian gets the call from the feds while in bed with Mia. Johnny and his gang are arrested, with Brian coming along.

Unfortunately, the DVD players were bought legally, leaving the feds with nothing, and Brian with 36 hours to solve the case. Toretto is now the biggest target, to Brian’s chagrin.

The next day, Brian plays hardball with Toretto, and manages to get his way into Race Wars, which seems to be an in for Dom’s other pursuits. Although, I still don’t think it’s him involved in the hijackings.

Race Wars! The amateur racing circuit begins, and everybody’s there, including Letty, who smokes a guy for $2000. Nice. Meanwhile, Jesse’s racing up against Johnny, despite Brian warning him not to. Jesse loses the car to him, and takes off after the race. Johnny confronts Toretto about that, and the FBI raid of his house. Dom’s not a big fan of that accusation.

That night, Dom and company take off, to Mia’s protest. And STUPIDLY, Brian tries to get the truth out of Mia by telling her that he’s a cop. That’s gonna go greeeeeeat. Mia’s understandably upset about this, but also realizes that Brian’s telling the truth, both about how he feels for her, and about the fact that her brother’s extremely likely to get arrested or hurt. She still isn’t happy about it, though.

We also cut to Dom and the gang, now short of Jesse. And yeah, it’s him. Not gonna lie, I really didn’t think it was Dom! Kinda sucks that it is, to be honest. They start the hijacking, but don’t account for something: the truck drivers are getting PISSED OFF. They mentioned earlier that some of these drivers are readying themselves for potential hijackings. And it looks like this is one of them.

This truck driver means business, and is now actively trying to kill Dom and his gang. He fires at the cars, while Vince clings to the side of the truck. He runs Letty off the road, and she’s not doing amazing. Vince gets shot, and Dominic’s car gets shot right in the engine.

Brian and Mia, meanwhile, catch up to them in the newly repaired car (which I’m calling Sunstorm), and rescues Vince, who also isn’t doing amazing. In the process, he reveals to Dom that he’s a cop. And Dom...is also not happy.

Vince is airlifted to a hospital, and Dom and Brian meet each other back in town. They confront each other, just as Jesse finally shows back up with the car that should be Johnny’s. Johnny agrees, as they engage in a drive-by shooting, killing Jesse in the process. Brian and Dom chase after them, Brian in Sunstorm, and Dom in his father’s old car.

What proceeds is a tense, gun-filled motorcycle and car chase. Johnny’s shot and killed by Brian. Dominic shows up, then speeds away, as Brian gives chase. They meet at a stop light, and agree to a street race toward a railroad crossing, complete with oncoming train. If Brian catches him, then he’ll go with him.

...Yeah, that was cool. But unfortunately, it ends less than ideally for Dominic.

Brian helps Dom out of the wrecked car, as the police approach. He gives Dom Sunstorm, allowing him to flee the police. Dom’s free, and Brian stays behind to face the consequences. Not that we see those, as Dom drives into the sunset of Baja California, living life a quarter mile at a time.

BATGIRL #1-4 NOVEMBER 2011 - FEBRUARY 2012 BY GAIL SIMONE, ARDIAN SYAF, VICENTE CIFUENTES AND ULISES ARREOLA

SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)

Somewhere, an elderly Graham Carter waters his garden. A mysterious figure comes up behind him, and identifies him as a man who survived the sinking of a transport ship, when all 27 others of the crew did not. The strange man introduces himself as the Mirror, and then takes the hose from Mr. Carter, jamming it down his throat, and drowning him with the water within. Crossing Carter's name off the list, the name Barbara Gordon is written below it.

Later, Barbara Gordon patrols Gotham City, finally having returned to her role as Batgirl. High above the city, she spots the killers she's been trailing.

A group of masked thugs are holding the Ortega family at gunpoint while their leader explains why he likes home invasion and murder. He shows them a scrapbook documenting all of their recent killings, and introduces his gang as what the media has dubbed the "Brisby Killers." The leader notes that he picked the Ortegas out of the phone book, and that if the parents cooperate, they may leave the kids alone.

Suddenly, Batgirl smashes through a window, knocking one of the thugs to the ground. She loves the exhilaration of leaping into melee combat, noting that her upper body strength is greater than most, as she knocks out a thug with one punch by accident. After taking out all of the others, only the leader - the gunman - remains. She can see it in his body language that he intends to shoot the Ortegas.

Thinking on her feet, she tosses a batarang into the leader's wrist. Angrily, he tackles her, launching both of them out the window. He winds up dangling at her mercy, and she ties him to the balcony before securing the others and leaving the scene.

That night, Barbara dreams of the past. She was once the Batman's star pupil, but one night, she answered her door to find the Joker standing there with a gun pointed at her. He shot her, and the bullet went through the first lumbar of her spinal cord, paralyzing her from the waist down for three years.

She wakes from her nightmare, and remembers where she is. Fortunately, she regained her ability to walk, since that night. She walks in on her father, James, enjoying a cup of coffee. He informs her that it is actually evening, and she has slept all day. She has plans to move out today; to move into her own place, and "stretch her legs."

Barbara's new place is in a building called Cherry Tree Hall, and her roommate is a bartender by night and painter by day. Despite her new roommate's quirky personality and penchant for activism, Barbara thinks they will get along well. She offers to help Barbara move in, but becomes distracted by the wheelchair lift in the van. She tries not to admit that it was once meant for her.

At Sacred Hands of God Hospital, the thug that Batgirl injured with her Batarang is receiving treatment, and remains under watch by Detective Mel McKenna and her partner. In the same hospital, The Mirror asks to see a Theodore Rankin before punching the receptionist in the face and shooting a security guard. McKenna and her partner hear the shots, and prepare to face whatever awaits them.

Barbara has rigged her phone to receive her father's messages, so that she can follow up on any calls for police assistance. Discovering what's happening at the hospital, she gets her motorcycle out of her van, and rides to the scene. She rides her bike right into the building and onto the elevator.

As the Mirror makes his way to their room, McKenna and her partner warn that if he doesn't get away from the door, they will shoot. In response, the Mirror blasts through the door, shooting McKenna and her partner in the process. McKenna survives, but her partner is not so lucky.

The Mirror approaches the injured thug, claiming that he should have fallen to his death during the altercation with Batgirl, and that has put him on the list. Barbara reaches the scene, and attempts to intervene, but the Mirror aims his gun at her in just the same area that the Joker had when he crippled her. Lost in her memory, she freezes long enough for the Mirror to shove the patient's bed out the window, into a long drop to the street below.

Having watched the whole scene, McKenna accuses Batgirl of being a murderer as she stood there and did nothing to stop it.

Batgirl realizes that she has not fully recovered psychologically from the shooting that crippled her years ago. When the Mirror pointed a gun at her, she froze, and failed to save Detective Douglas Paulson from being shot to death, and failed to stop the leader of the Brisby Killers from being thrown out of the hospital window to his death.

The Mirror prepares to make his escape, but Paulson's partner, Detective Mel McKenna - who blames Batgirl for his death - points her own gun at the killer. She is unfortunately suffering from a likely concussion, and can't aim her weapon properly. She is forced to impotently shout after him as he leaves and Batgirl gives chase.

Batgirl vows to catch the Mirror, chasing him across rooftops and finally leaping down and kicking him from behind. Unfortunately, she misjudges her speed, and both of them are thrown off the edge of a building. Desperately, they both grip an outcropping gargoyle. Strangely, the Mirror seems to have unfinished business. Sympathetically, Batgirl reaches down to help him, but he reveals that she is on his list of intended victims, and wrenches her by the arm from her foothold, throwing her into a free-fall.

Desperately, Batgirl releases her Batrope, grappling onto another outcropping. Unfortunately, her trajectory brings her to street level, and she slams hard into the side of a moving taxi. Naturally, this angers the cab driver, and Batgirl is forced to drag herself up, nurse her cracked ribs, and shuffle away.

Back at the hospital, Detective McKenna refuses medical attention, despite being quite shaken. Eventually, Commissioner Gordon appears, and commands McKenna to allow the attending physician to look at her. He orders that she take mandatory bereavement leave and return after the department psychologist clears her. Before she leaves, McKenna warns that there will need to be a second warrant; one for Batgirl's arrest. The Commissioner is visibly shaken.

Batgirl follows Mirror's trail to the Hollows, an exclusive cemetery reserved for Gotham's rich and privileged. He senses her presence quickly, and calls out to her. She leaps out, but she is no match for him, and he lands a heavy punch in her gut. Knowing that she can't take another hit like that, Batgirl resorts to her wits instead, trying to tire him out by dodging his attacks. Charging him, she manages to steal his list from within his robes. He swipes it back from her hand, enraged that she would dare to look at it. Then, the sound of sirens fills the air, and before she can react, the Mirror is gone.

Without anywhere else to go, Barbara Gordon changes out of her costume and winds up at her new apartment. When her roommate Alysia Yeoh answers the door, she is surprised to see Barbara there, crumpled, wounded, and seconds away from blacking out. Barbara wakes in Alysia's bed. Alysia spares little time in drawing attention to Barbara's obvious injuries, and warns that she is one minute away from calling the police. Barbara assures her that she is not being abused, and is not a criminal - but she won't tell her what's really going on. Barely convinced, Alysia offers to make Barbara some soup. Awkwardly, Barbara asks to borrow something cute to wear.

Later, in her borrowed dress, Barbara has a date with Gregor, her physical therapist. He has worries about the ethics of dating a patient, but Barbara reassures him. They walk through the park, and he asks her why she doesn't talk about when she regained the use of her legs. Barbara responds that she doesn't believe in miracles, and wonders why - if someone is handing them out - she was a recipient. Gregor tries to assure her that some miracles do happen, and that her recovery doesn't have to come at a price.

Later, Barbara does some research at the library, following a lead she picked up on from Mirror at the cemetery. He had mentioned fire, and she assumes that it must have been significant to his reason for being there. She cross-references fires with people who match the Mirror's physical description, and finds the story of a federal agent, Jonathan Mills, who was the sole survivor of a car crash.

Batgirl heads to his apartment, finding that the windows have been rigged with alarm trip wires. The alarms seem to be deactivated, though, and she breaks in. Inside, she finds a veritable arsenal of weapons. Suddenly, the Mirror appears on a large video monitor and addresses her. He explains how he had been forced to watch as his family burned to death in the back of his car while he survived. He feels responsible, and believes that he should have died too.

The Mirror shows her a news clipping showing a man who collapsed on some train tracks, but was saved by a stranger. In response, the Mirror has placed a bomb on the train that the man rides to work daily - for a sense of closure. The Mirror plans to use whatever means necessary to bring an end to all miracles.

With the Mirror mocking her through her ear-piece, Batgirl races to one of Gotham City's trains in order to save a man whom the Mirror has marked for death merely for having survived an event miraculously. Rupert Ansell had fallen onto the train tracks on his morning commute, and had been saved at the last second by a good Samaritan going the opposite direction. The Mirror's MO sees him murdering anybody who seems to have been saved by a miracle, because he doesn't think miracles should be believed in. Batgirl knows better, because the fact that she's standing at all is a miracle.

Banging on the engineer's window, Batgirl determines that the train can't be stopped, and the doors can't be opened. Frustrated, she gets inside by smashing in through one of the windows. Rather than try to find the bomb that the Mirror has planted, she searches for Ruper Ansell himself. When he comes forward, she sends the other passengers out of the car. Understanding the Mirror's method, Batgirl banks on the fact that she is also on his list.

She wraps her arms around Rupert Ansell, knowing that the Mirror can't blow him up without blowing her up too. Batgirl is on the list because she miraculously survived a fall during an encounter with the Brisby Killers. If she dies by explosion, it will thwart the Mirror's plans. However, the Mirror has the upper hand, as he reminds her that the good Samaritan also survived by a miracle. Moments later, the train going in the opposite direction blows with Rupert Ansell's saviour on board. Batgirl saved one man, but allowed another to die.

Two hours later, Det. Mel McKenna tries to convince Commissioner Gordon to let her come back in to work. The Commissioner reminds her that protocol requires her to see a psychologist about her partner's death before she can come back to work. Grumpily, McKenna decides to hold her own investigation into Batgirl, who she blames for her partner's death.

Barbara visits her father at work, and invites him to lunch. She is obviously shaken about her encounter with the Mirror, and the man she allowed to die. Her father sees it, but rather than open up, all she can do is tell him that she misses him. Seeing that she's upset, her father expresses worry that she's taking on too much. She has only just recovered from her injury, and he worries that she will relapse if she works too hard. He can't take lunch with her because of a lead, and Barbara watches him go, wondering if people really see her as that breakable.

That night, Batgirl breaks into the police impound lot, having left her Batcycle outside the hospital the night before. She is interrupted by Nightwing, though she claims to have known he was tailing her the whole time. She invites him onto the back of the bike, and they crash through the fence, speeding through the twilight streets of Gotham.

Though she loathes to admit it, the feeling of Dick's arms around her on that bike makes her feel very good. Parking the bike, Barbara demands to know what Dick is doing there. Awkwardly, he admits that he's checking in on her because he and Batman are worried that she could end up back in the wheelchair if she's not careful - just like her father does. Frustrated, he is forced to simply ask whether she can handle the Mirror on her own. In answer, Barbara kicks his feet out from under him, and rappels off into the night.

She recalls how she and Dick used to chase each other like this even back when they first met - he an acrobat, and she a ballerina. Despite his cockiness back then, his kindness made up for a lot of it - and it became easy to like him. Richard Grayson was the first boy Barbara ever had a crush on who wasn't a scientist. Admittedly, she still feels the way she did during that first crush when she's around him - but it's an admission she can barely make to herself.

When Dick catches up to her, Barbara decides that she's had enough of well-meaning boys, from Dick to Batman - even her father. She will have no more of men trying to protect her when she doesn't want or need it. She says that if men keep on trying to protect her, she would send them back with blackened eyes. She begins physically sparring with Nightwing, offering little quarter, and forcing him to defend himself. Finally, he yells out that the reason that he and Batman have been worried is not because they doubt her, but because they love her. Shocked, Barbara realizes that she has been pushing away those who love her because she craved understanding more than pity; respect more than comfort.

Playing off her realization casually, Barbara states firmly that she has to do this - face this - alone. She cuts off a lock of her hair and places it in Dick's hand, stating that if he can't let her do it alone, then they can't be friends. Reluctant, but understanding, Dick lets her go.

Barbara Gordon's dreams are full of guilt and symbolism. She blames herself for recovering from the injury that kept her trapped in a wheel chair until nearly a year ago. She wonders why she was allowed a miracle when so many others don't. The dream is recurring, and Barbara wakes up in a sweat.

Wandering out of her room, she finds her roommate Alysia sitting near their Christmas tree, having just got off of her late shift at work. Barbara sits down beside her, and the two of them discuss Christmas. Barbara awkwardly describes her best Christmas gift, how her mother walked out when she was twelve, and a year ago that night, her father gave her news of a South African clinic which might be able to help her. Alysia correctly deduces that the wheelchair ramp in Barbara's van was for her. Barbara feels uncomfortable talking about something so personal to her, and hurriedly makes excuses to leave. She's so flustered that she forgets to put on shoes.

To get away from all of the questions, Barbara goes out as Batgirl. She happens upon a gang of thugs holding up an affluent couple. The thugs are using an app for their smartphones which shows them where the Batman is at any given time based on reports, to be sure that he won't interrupt their crimes. Which means that they are not expecting it when Batgirl appears.

Thinking about her case, Barbara is glad that her eidetic memory has allowed her to remember all of the names on the list that she stole from the Mirror, before he stole it back. Naturally, that memory has other uses, like making it easy to take out predictable thugs with inadequate weaponry. Quickly, she disposes of the thugs with surgical precision. The couple are grateful, hugging her to them, glad to be able to see their children again.

The mention of children gives Barbara an idea. Knowing that Mirror feels a responsibility to his murdered wife and daughters, she leaves a note for him at the Hollows Cemetery. The note condemns him for murdering when his own family was murdered, claiming that his feeling that miracles should not happen is no justification for murder. She invites him to Sprang Park for a showdown, after revealing that she has already given the GCPD all of the names on his list, as well as his modus operandi.

At Sprang Park, Batgirl lures the Mirror into the Hall of Mirrors. In the ensuing fight, Barbara realizes that she is outmatched, but still manages to land a powerful kick to his face that smashes the mirrored mask which covers his face. Using the distraction, she activates a projector, which causes the image of Jonathan Mills' family's destroyed car to appear on every mirrored surface in the room, including Mills' own armour. The image shakes him, and he collapses, allowing Batgirl to land a heavy punch which sends him into unconsciousness. Standing over him, she states that sometimes, extraordinary things happen to the worst people, and the best people do suffer. Sometimes, people get their miracles whether they deserve them or not. As she says this, she begins to come to terms with her own survivor's guilt.

Later that night, Barbara and Alysia exchange gifts, and grow closer. When Alysia asks about Barbara's family, she responds that she is used to simple holidays with just her father and brother. Suddenly, the doorbell rings, and Barbara is surprised to find a woman who bears a strong resemblance to her standing there. The woman introduces herself as Barbara's mother.

REVIEW

I have mixed feelings about this story.

First of all, by the editorial decision of returning to Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl. Many agreed that Barbara becoming Oracle was an amazing role model for people facing disabilities. At the same time, Nostalgia played a big part on this and when you have to reset your universe... would you make Stephanie the first Batgirl?

Gail decided to leave the “killing joke incident” in continuity, and Barbara instead of overcoming that tragedy by becoming a different type of hero, she made her go back to be Batgirl. This is also an inspiring story for people with disabilities, but the fact that she got help from science that doesn’t exist in our world, is not that inspiring.

I also don’t have fond memories of this run, other than the appearances of James Gordon Jr, but my guess is that, that happened because of the many crossovers and because I was reading it month by month. When I think of the new 52 Batgirl, I think of the DCYOU one.

Reading the full story in one sitting is different though. Both Barbara and Mirror have similar inner conflicts, and while at the end, looking at herself in the mirror makes her stronger (or at least, makes her face her fears, another inspiring story), when Mirror looks at his reflection, all he sees is death (well, those photos of his dead family were probably the reason). So the story itself is well crafted in it feels personal.

What I didn’t buy much was the villain. I know of survivor’s guilt, and it is strange that this character was also an ex soldier (he managed to survive the war without this issue). It’s just that I have problems believing that a person with this problem would go on to kill survivors of completely disconnected accidents.

Still, some of these changes made a good impression and Alysia Yeoh became a regular supporting character of the DCU. A character with double diversity (Asian + transgender).

The art looks nice, but maybe that is one of the reasons I do not remember this story that much. There is nothing that really moved me about it, and there were moments that should have (the many instances when Barbara was afraid of losing her legs again). I don’t think it’s bad, and at least it isn’t too sexual, but still, didn’t make a mark on my memory.

I give this story a score of 8.

Who Killed the Knapp Family?

The stock market is near record highs, but working-class Americans (often defined as those without college degrees) continue to struggle. If you’re only a high school graduate, or worse, a dropout, work no longer pays. If the federal minimum wage in 1968 had kept up with inflation and productivity, it would now be $22 an hour. Instead, it’s $7.25. In some ways, the situation is worsening, because families have imploded under the pressure of drug and alcohol abuse, and children are growing up in desperate circumstances. It would be easy but too simplistic to blame just automation and lost jobs: The problems are also rooted in disastrous policy choices over 50 years. If you owned a business, what, if anything, could you do to address this situation?

Chaos reigned daily on the No. 6 school bus, with working-class boys and girls flirting and gossiping and dreaming, brimming with mischief, bravado and optimism. Nick rode it every day in the 1970s with neighbors here in rural Oregon, neighbors like Farlan, Zealan, Rogena, Nathan and Keylan Knapp.

They were bright, rambunctious, upwardly mobile youngsters whose father had a good job installing pipes. The Knapps were thrilled to have just bought their own home, and everyone oohed and aahed when Farlan received a Ford Mustang for his 16th birthday.

Yet today about one-quarter of the children on that No. 6 bus are dead, mostly from drugs, suicide, alcohol or reckless accidents. Of the five Knapp kids who had once been so cheery, Farlan died of liver failure from drink and drugs, Zealan burned to death in a house fire while passed out drunk, Rogena died from hepatitis linked to drug use and Nathan blew himself up cooking meth. Keylan survived partly because he spent 13 years in a state penitentiary.

Among other kids on the bus, Mike died from suicide, Steve from the aftermath of a motorcycle accident, Cindy from depression and a heart attack, Jeff from a daredevil car crash, Billy from diabetes in prison, Kevin from obesity-related ailments, Tim from a construction accident, Sue from undetermined causes. And then there’s Chris, who is presumed dead after years of alcoholism and homelessness. At least one more is in prison, and another is homeless.

We Americans are locked in political combat and focused on President Trump, but there is a cancer gnawing at the nation that predates Trump and is larger than him. Suicides are at their highest rate since World War II; one child in seven is living with a parent suffering from substance abuse; a baby is born every 15 minutes after prenatal exposure to opioids; America is slipping as a great power.

We have deep structural problems that have been a half century in the making, under both political parties, and that are often transmitted from generation to generation. Only in America has life expectancy now fallen three years in a row, for the first time in a century, because of “deaths of despair.”

“The meaningfulness of the working-class life seems to have evaporated,” Angus Deaton, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, told us. “The economy just seems to have stopped delivering for these people.” Deaton and the economist Anne Case, who is also his wife, coined the term “deaths of despair” to describe the surge of mortality from alcohol, drugs and suicide.

The kids on the No. 6 bus rode into a cataclysm as working-class communities disintegrated across America because of lost jobs, broken families, gloom — and failed policies. The suffering was invisible to affluent Americans, but the consequences are now evident to all: The survivors mostly voted for Trump, some in hopes that he would rescue them, but under him the number of children without health insurance has risen by more than 400,000.

We were foreign correspondents together for many years, periodically covering humanitarian crises in distant countries. Then we would return to the Kristof family farm in Yamhill and see a humanitarian crisis unfolding in a community we loved — and a similar unraveling was happening in towns across the country. This was not one town’s problem, but a crisis in the American system.

“I’m a capitalist, and even I think capitalism is broken,” says Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater, the world’s largest hedge fund.

Even in this presidential campaign, the unraveling of working-class communities receives little attention. There is talk about the middle class, but very little about the working class; we discuss college access but not the one in seven children who don’t graduate from high school. America is like a boat that is half-capsized, but those partying above water seem oblivious.

“We have to stop being obsessed over impeachment and start actually digging in and solving the problems that got Donald Trump elected in the first place,” Andrew Yang argued in the last Democratic presidential debate. Whatever you think of Yang as a candidate, on this he is dead right: We have to treat America’s cancer.

In some ways, the situation is worsening, because families have imploded under the pressure of drug and alcohol abuse, and children are growing up in desperate circumstances. One of our dearest friends in Yamhill, Clayton Green, a brilliant mechanic who was three years behind Nick in school, died last January, leaving five grandchildren — and all have been removed from their parents by the state for their protection. A local school official sighs that some children are “feral.”

Farlan, the oldest of the Knapp children, was in Nick’s grade. A talented woodworker, he dreamed of opening a business called “Farlan’s Far Out Fantastic Freaky Furniture.” But Farlan ended up dropping out of school after the ninth grade.

Although he never took high school chemistry, Farlan became a first-rate chemist: He was one of the first people in the Yamhill area to cook meth. For a time he was a successful entrepreneur known for his high quality merchandise. “This is what I was made for,” he once announced with quiet pride. But he abused his own drugs and by his 40s was gaunt and frail.

In some ways, he was a great dad, for he loved his two daughters, Amber and Andrea, and they idolized him. But theirs was not an optimal upbringing: In one of Amber’s baby pictures, there’s a plate of cocaine in the background.

Farlan died of liver failure in 2009, just after his 51st birthday, and his death devastated both daughters. Andrea, who was smart, talented, gorgeous and entrepreneurial, ran her own real estate business but accelerated her drinking after her dad died. “She drank herself to death,” her uncle Keylan told us. She was buried in 2013 at the age of 29.

In the 1970s and ’80s it was common to hear derogatory suggestions that the forces ripping apart African-American communities were rooted in “black culture.” The idea was that “deadbeat dads,” self-destructive drug abuse and family breakdown were the fundamental causes, and that all people needed to do was show “personal responsibility.”

A Harvard sociologist, William Julius Wilson, countered that the true underlying problem was lost jobs, and he turned out to be right. When good jobs left white towns like Yamhill a couple of decades later because of globalization and automation, the same pathologies unfolded there. Men in particular felt the loss not only of income but also of dignity that accompanied a good job. Lonely and troubled, they self-medicated with alcohol or drugs, and they accumulated criminal records that left them less employable and less marriageable. Family structure collapsed.

It would be easy but too simplistic to blame just automation and lost jobs: The problems are also rooted in disastrous policy choices over 50 years. The United States wrested power from labor and gave it to business, and it suppressed wages and cut taxes rather than invest in human capital, as our peer countries did. As other countries embraced universal health care, we did not; several counties in the United States have life expectancies shorter than those in Cambodia or Bangladesh.

One consequence is that the bottom end of America’s labor force is not very productive, in ways that reduce our country’s competitiveness. A low-end worker may not have a high school diploma and is often barely literate or numerate while also struggling with a dependency; more than seven million Americans also have suspended driver’s licenses for failing to pay child support or court-related debt, meaning that they may not reliably show up at work.

Americans also bought into a misconceived “personal responsibility” narrative that blamed people for being poor. It’s true, of course, that personal responsibility matters: People we spoke to often acknowledged engaging in self-destructive behaviors. But when you can predict wretched outcomes based on the ZIP code where a child is born, the problem is not bad choices the infant is making. If we’re going to obsess about personal responsibility, let’s also have a conversation about social responsibility.

Why did deaths of despair claim Farlan, Zealan, Nathan, Rogena and so many others? We see three important factors.

First, well-paying jobs disappeared, partly because of technology and globalization but also because of political pressure on unions and a general redistribution of power toward the wealthy and corporations.

Second, there was an explosion of drugs — oxycodone, meth, heroin, crack cocaine and fentanyl — aggravated by the reckless marketing of prescription painkillers by pharmaceutical companies.

Third, the war on drugs sent fathers and mothers to jail, shattering families.

There’s plenty of blame to go around. Both political parties embraced mass incarceration and the war on drugs, which was particularly devastating for black Americans, and ignored an education system that often consigned the poor — especially children of color — to failing schools. Since 1988, American schools have become increasingly segregated by race, and kids in poor districts perform on average four grade levels behind those in rich districts.

Farlan’s daughter Amber seemed to be the member of the Knapp family most poised for success. She was the first Knapp ever to graduate from high school, and then she took a job at a telecommunications company, managing databases and training staff members to use computer systems. We were struck by her intellect and interpersonal skills; it was easy to imagine her as a lawyer or a business executive.

“PowerPoint presentations and Excel and pivot charts and matrix analytics, that’s what I like to do,” she told us. She married and had three children, and for a time was thriving.

Then in grief after her father and sister died, she imploded. A doctor had prescribed medications like Xanax, and she became dependent on them. After running out of them, she began smoking meth for the first time when she was 32.

“I was dead set against it my whole life,” she remembered. “I hated it. I’d seen what it did to everybody. My dad was a junkie who cooked meth and lost everything. You would think that was enough.” It wasn’t. She bounced in and out of jail and lost her kids.

Amber knew she had blown it, but she was determined to recover her life and her children. We had hoped that Amber would claw her way back, proof that it is possible to escape the messiness of the Knapp family story and build a successful life. We texted Amber a few times to arrange to get photos of Farlan, and then she stopped replying to our texts. Finally, her daughter responded: Amber was back in jail.

Yet it’s not hopeless. America is polarized with ferocious arguments about social issues, but we should be able to agree on what doesn’t work: neglect and underinvestment in children. Here’s what does work.

Job training and retraining give people dignity as well as an economic lifeline. Such jobs programs are common in other countries.

For instance, autoworkers were laid off during the 2008-9 economic crisis both in Detroit and across the Canadian border in nearby Windsor, Ontario. As the scholar Victor Tan Chen has showed, the two countries responded differently. The United States focused on money, providing extended unemployment benefits. Canada emphasized job retraining, rapidly steering workers into new jobs in fields like health care, and Canadian workers also did not have to worry about losing health insurance.

Canada’s approach succeeded. The focus on job placement meant that Canadian workers were ushered more quickly back into workaday society and thus today seem less entangled in drugs and family breakdown.

Another successful strategy is investing not just in prisons but also in human capital to keep people out of prisons. The highest-return investments available in America may be in early education for disadvantaged children, but there are also valuable interventions available for adolescents and adults. We attended a thrilling graduation in Tulsa, Okla., for 17 women completing an impressive local drug treatment program called Women in Recovery.

The graduates had an average of 15 years of addiction each, and all were on probation after committing crimes. Yet they had quit drugs and started jobs, and 300 people in the audience — including police officers who had arrested them and judges who had sentenced them — gave the women a standing ovation. The state attorney general served as the commencement speaker and called them “heroes,” drawing tearful smiles from women more accustomed to being called “junkies” or “whores.”

“I thought we’d be planning a funeral instead,” said one audience member whose younger sister had started using meth at age 12 and was now graduating at 35. Women in Recovery has a recidivism rate after three years of only 4 percent, and consequently has saved Oklahoma $70 million in prison spending, according to the George Kaiser Family Foundation.

Bravo for philanthropy, but the United States would never build interstate highways through volunteers and donations, and we can’t build a national preschool program or a national drug recovery program with private money. We need the government to step up and jump-start nationwide programs in early childhood education, job retraining, drug treatment and more.

For individuals trying to break an addiction, a first step is to face up to the problem — and that’s what America should do as well. Our own reporting in the past focused on foreigners, affording us an emotional distance, while this time we spoke with old friends and had no armor. It has been wrenching to see them struggle. But ultimately we saw pathways forward that leave us hopeful.

One of our dear friends in Yamhill was Rick (Ricochet) Goff, who was part Indian and never had a chance: His mom died when he was 5 and his dad was, as he put it, “a professional drunk” who abandoned the family. Ricochet was a whiz at solving puzzles and so dependable a friend that he would lend pals money even when he couldn’t afford medicine for himself. We deeply felt Ricochet’s loss when he died four years ago, and we also worried about his adult son, Drew, who is smart and charismatic but had been messing with drugs since he was 12.

Drew’s son, Ashtyn, was born with drugs in his system, and we feared that the cycle of distress was now being passed on to the next generation. We exchanged letters with Drew while he was in prison but lost touch.

Then, when we were visiting a drug-treatment program in Oregon called Provoking Hope, a young man bounded over to us. “It’s me, Drew,” he said.

We have been close with Drew since, and he fills us with optimism. With the help of Provoking Hope, Drew will soon celebrate two years free of drugs, and he holds a responsible job at the front desk of a hotel. He has custody of Ashtyn and is now an outstanding dad, constantly speaking to him and playing with him. Drew still has a tempestuous side, and occasionally he has some rash impulse — but then he thinks of Ashtyn and reins himself in.

He barely hears the beep over the ringing in his ears.

“Hey, baby.” His voice is shaking. She’s going to know something’s wrong. How is it that he can’t seem to push past a monotone voice and stoic demeanor with others, but even leaving Rowan a voice-mail sends him into a spiral? “I --” Spit it out. “She’s -- Fuck, I don’t even know, but it’s bad,” Another pause comes with it, his attempts to remain calm becoming more and more evident with each second. “I -- Fuck, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.” Another pause. “It’s Sylvia, Ro.”

He had settled into a new routine, one that has a familiarity he hadn’t realized how badly he missed until it was back in his hands. In the time he spent locked away, Andy found himself, more often than not, laying awake at night picturing the different places his life had gone -- From being a carefree child, to forcibly growing up and joining the family business, from drinking his way through his early twenties with a bloodied baseball bat in hand, to finally see Rowan walk down the aisle. The house they bought together. The child they should be raising together. The life they could be living, one where he’s not hauled away in a pair of handcuffs as his mother holds his wife.

It all comes back to her, he’s learned. It all comes back to Rowan Fisher, the image of her laying next to him as the sun pushes through the bedroom curtains and illuminates her; The light catching her green eyes, dimples showing when she gives him a smile and a sleepy hello handsome. He spent years reminding himself of moments like these, the thought of having her back in his life serving as a motivation for him more often than not. And now that he has this routine back? His hands card through her hair each morning as they greet one another, tangled limbs and tired eyes mumbling sweet nothings to each other, Andy realizes just how badly he missed this. He’d thought about it, longed for her, ached to return to who they were before he through a wrench in their lives -- But now that he has her back, he’s almost terrified to leave her side. Andy knew better than to get comfortable, but he does it anyway. Consistency isn’t a common factor in this life, if the last thirty-seven years haven’t been enough proof. But he lets himself settle back into this life, lets himself enjoy tucking himself away in her home with her. He cooks, they laugh, he and Rowan share her bed each night. She clears a drawer for his clothes. It’s almost disgustingly domestic, down to the them washing each other’s hair in the shower, holding her close as they lay in bed as she watches Golden Girl’s reruns and he reads. They’re together again, for lack of a better word -- Not necessarily ‘dating’, but still not married, either. They’re floating somewhere between that, with both of them setting ground rules for each other. He’s happy to oblige, having no qualms with working for his relationship with her.

He gets lost in it, like a deer caught in the headlights -- He ignores the warnings his instincts bring, knowing Kane and the Trojans won’t remain dormant for long. It’s naive to think that the rumors of federal agents snooping around are just small town gossip, and he knows it’s only a matter of time before he meets one directly, surely to be hauled away to the Sheriff’s station. It’s not lost on Andy that he’s roughly one parking ticket away from a life sentence in prison, he knows this -- Maybe subconsciously it’s why he’s so quick to fall back into an old routine, to tuck himself away in his little corner with the love of his life; Because at least then he can enjoy his time with her, and attempt to keep his head afloat at the same time.

The tidal wave that hits isn’t in the form of a federal agent, or an act of violence on the MCs word -- It’s something as simple as a call from a phone number he doesn’t recognize, one he doesn’t pick up on at their first attempt to reach him.

Sylvia Warren came into Andy’s life sometime after his twenty fourth birthday. The moment he sees her, he can tell they share a mother -- The darkness of her hair, the curve of her jaw. They even hold themselves in the same way, but in her case, her eyes give away what she’s thinking. She looks just like their mother, and he wants to hate her for it.

He only learns he has a sister when he finds his mother, after Rowan insists on him reaching out to contact her. Andy knows she had noble intentions, that they could have never anticipated what came next. He always assumed the fire in his bones came from his unnamed biological father, but the second he sits across from Delphine Warren at a table in some shitty diner outside of Kansas City -- He learns it’s all his mother. She’s apprehensive from the moment they met eyes, something twists in his stomach when he realizes how alike they seem to be, both physically and mentally. She’s smaller than him, doesn’t make eye contact for the first few minutes, the two staring in silence before she breaks it with words he’ll never forget. I never wanted to be a mother. She plies him with a sob story, of how her life had been turned upside down at the age of sixteen because of him, that she wanted to try for him but proved she couldn’t handle it. Five months,she tells him. That’s how long she spent with him. Long enough to give him a name -- He learns his middle name, William, is his father’s name; Long enough to hold him close and whisper promises while she soothes him, telling him they’ll have a better life someday, that they’ll make it through this.

That never comes, and she leaves him on the fire station door step in the middle of Spring. She tries to justify herself, that she was a child and was afraid, that he just wouldn’t stop crying, and she was losing her mind. It’s confusing, to see the woman he’d spent his entire life picture, the woman who he’d searched for with his actual mother’s help, turn out to have not wanted him. She blamed him for her shortcomings, and he couldn’t stop himself in that moment from asking if she did now, too. Delphine never answers. He leaves without looking back.

He meets Sylvia a year later. She finds him, showing up at his door one afternoon. They’re not home when she arrives, but she settles herself on the porch until Andy parks his bike in the driveway, hand instinctively reaching for the gun in the waistband of his pants. She’s barely nineteen years old, terrified and unsure. Is your name Andrew? Turns out Delphine didn’t resent him enough to give up, enough to bring Sylvia along for the ride just to leave her in the same manor. Only this time around, his biological mother makes it five years rather than five months, before she leaves her daughter at the daycare, and never returns to pick her up.

They talk. For hours. She tells her story from the beginning, and he does the same -- She tells him about the different foster family’s she’s lived with, he talks about Rhea and Cronus. There’s no stone unturned, no topic off limits (though he’s careful to spare her a few specifics), leaving the two realizing they have more in common than just their shitty mother. Sylvia remains in his life from that moment, something sacred and held dear to his heart. There’s roughly three people who know she exists at all -- Rowan, Rhea, and Oliver. The former being the only one with more detail, one of the only people to have actually met the person in question. He keeps her a secret from the rest of his family, knowing it’s better for her to remain entirely unattached to the club, to the Thane family name. She doesn’t deserve to be pulled into his world without a choice, and he’s far too terrified of Cronus learning about who she is to even breathe her name outside of pillow talk with Rowan.

They keep in touch after that day, but rarely see one another. Whenever he passes through Dallas, Andy makes sure to stop in and say hello, offering a helping hand whenever she needs it. Whenever she drives through New Orleans they meet up, usually in some hole in the wall diner where they can talk for hours without the stares of disgruntled waitresses. They learn just how alike they are, that they both endured unstable homes as children, that they struggle to say the right thing in the right moment. She laughs, telling him she’s only heard about motorcycles gangs on TV, though. You have me beat with that one. She sends him postcards for each holiday, and he begins to do just the same. They call one another once a month or so, chatting about their lives, bitching about friends and family, whoever she’s dating.

She doesn’t go very long between visits, until seven months pass and he’s only heard from her by mail. There’s an explanation that comes, though -- And he’s three month old baby named Benjamin. Andy cries the first time he meets him, hands shaking as thinks of his own loss. It’s the one thing he could never bring himself to tell Sylvia about, other than a short, clipped explanation.

She never pushes it. Instead, she waves Benny’s hand as the child laughs, introducing him to Uncle Andy.

He picks up on the fourth call, when he returns from dealing with some jackass with a souped up sports car. He hasn’t had a lunch break or a cigarette all day, and his patience wears even thinner at the sight of four missed calls and two voicemails from the same unknown number. He’s still figuring out how to use the iPhone Rowan made him get -- It was the last of her ground rules, said with a laugh and wink -- but it tells him the call is from Dallas, Texas and it’s enough to make his heart sink. The messages are played to deaf ears, a ringing in his ears beginning as soon it begins to play.

Hi Mr. Thane, this is Debbie from Dallas Regional Medical. Your sister, Sylvia Warren, has been in an accident. She’s in critical condition, and is in her surgery right now. You are listed as her next of kin ---

He doesn’t hear much past that, his heart beginning to slam against his chest as he pulls the phone from his ear, slumping into the nearest chair. His thoughts go to Rowan, first -- To the shoot out, to her in surgery as he shakily fills out forms before he finally cracks. He thought he’d never have to feel this kind of heartache again, never have to go down that road after that day. Things have come together, he thought. His life had managed to find some sort of order in spite of the chaos around them -- He knew better than to believe something like that could last, to let himself become comfortable. His father’s voice rings in the back of his mind, reminding him how childish he can be.

A string of curses fall past his lips as he jumped to his feet again, other club members around him share confused looks. Andy doesn’t bother to explain himself, thoughts of the cars he’s supposed to work on or the date he and Rowan had set up for tonight are replaced by the need to figure out what happened to Sylvia. His body moves before he registers where he’s going -- He thankfully remembers his wallet, mumbling a string of curses and pleas to whatever God is up there that she doesn’t die, that part of his family isn’t torn from him.

He’s on a flight to Dallas within the hour, not bothering to stop at the house to pack his clothes or let anyone in on what’s going on. Tunnel vision takes over, landing him at the Dallas airport in the late hours of the night. He doesn’t know this city, doesn’t know what he’s walking into. It’s all a blur, rushing from one place to another in an attempt to reach his destination, to get the answers he needs.

The adrenaline wears off the second he enters the hospital, feeling his shoulders tense up and his jaw clench. Memories of only a few weeks prior find him, stopping him in the middle of the waiting room -- He can see it now, him sitting in the chair next to his mother. Addison Fisher hastily shoving a clipboard of papers to fill out, Rhea’s steady arm around his shoulder, the other attempting to steady his hand. It’s almost like it’s happening in front of him, a scene from a movie replaying across a screen. The shoot out, her blood on his shirt, his hand never leaving hers. The feeling as though someone cut him open and left him for dead. Andy reminds himself of what happened after that, after the tears and the fear -- The sight of her in a hospital bed, hooked up to wires and IVs, her raspy voice saying Hi, handsome. It wasn’t the end for her. It doesn’t have to be the end for Sylvia, either.

“Sir?” A voice pulls him from the memory, eyes blinking and suddenly he’s standing in front of a nurses station, a confused man in scrubs looking at him. “Sir, are you alright?” Andy can’t bring himself to speak at first, caught in a strange daze that leaves him feeling like he’s screaming underwater, his lungs burning.

And then -- He comes up for air, as if someone hit play and everything around him returns to it’s regular pace. “Sylvia.” He says her name with surprising firmness, clarity. “I’m looking for Sylvia Warren’s room. My name is Andrew Thane, I’m her next of kin.” He doesn’t know where the sudden steadiness that finds him came from, but he doesn’t stop it -- It’s welcomed, despite the turmoil brewing in him, worst case scenarios filling his head. He can’t bring himself to ask about Benny, either. “I received a call this morning that she was in surgery.”

He doesn’t know how any of this works, but he notes the way the nurse in front of him twitches. He’s never understood the medical jargon -- That’s Rowan’s territory -- But he knows the importance of body language, and the way the man in front of him moves tells him everything he needs to know. The shift of weight from one foot to the other, the quirk of his eyebrows, the way he tenses at the name Sylvia Warren. She isn’t going to see the other side of this, Andy realizes. She doesn’t get the same result Rowan does, he won’t greet her sitting in a hospital bed, tethered to IVs and an oxygen tank, ready to make a clever quip about him being there. He can hear her voice now, see the smirk at her lips when she tells him You Thane’s don’t fuck around with family, huh?

The nurse speaks to him, tip toeing around answering him until someone in bloodied scrubs, with a surgical mask around their neck approaches him. She’s a tiny thing, barely over five foot, but she’s a doctor here, her white coat covering most of the blood stains as she reaches for his arm. “Mr. Thane, let’s take a seat.”

There’s a ringing in his ears, he fiddles with his thumbs as she speaks, his leg bouncing against the worn carpet of the waiting room. She was in a car wreck, hit on the driver’s side. Her son was in the car with her. She was barely alive when she got to the hospital, having lost consciousness multiple times while in the ambulance. Benny was in the car. They performed emergency surgery, it lasted eleven hours. They tried to contact him, but didn’t get any answers. Her son was, miraculously, not injured critically. They want to keep him overnight for observation, to monitor the stitches on his belly, the bruise on his forehead. Her son is alive, but Sylvia was not as lucky. She has given specific instructions for what should happen to her son if she die -- That he would be taken in by his godfather, her next of kin.

He has a feeling he’s going to throw up.

They take him to Benny’s room after the doctor gives him an explanation of what has happened, what’s to come, where this puts him. He barely hears it, only catching what’s important. He’ll have to sign legal documents stating that he will be Benny’s legal guardian, that CPS will be there soon to explain further. This happens as they walked to his room -- It’s the third floor and the seventh door on the left. He doesn’t know why that piece of information sticks the most.

The sight of him, barely fucking ten months old and sound asleep in the hospital sanction crib eases the weight on his shoulders -- Until he sees the bruise forming on him, the small oxygen wire under his tiny nose. It knocks the wind out of him, causing a physical reaction as he takes a step backward, panic settling over him as reality kicks in. He almost looks serene, peaceful despite the chaos that’s happened around him. Benny has no idea that he’s just lost his mother, that he’s in a hospital. He has no idea what’s going on around them, and it almost makes Andy feel worse.

Sylvia is dead. Benny is alive.

She wants Andy to be the one to raise him, now that she can’t.

He wonders if she was out of her fucking mind.

The doctor leaves him, with a muffled ‘I’ll give you a moment’ as her goodbye. He finds himself backing up until he reaches the wall of the hospital room, sinking slowly to the ground as he tries to grasp the strange left turn this has all been. Andrew Thane has endured loss, has made it an old friend of his. From the loss of his daughter to the loss of his freedom -- And now, the loss of his biological sister. This is nothing new to him, but it doesn’t dull the sting, the way loss carves a part of his chest out and takes it away. Piece of him is gone each time, and this time, it’s in the form of someone who should have been safe from his losing streak, who should have been far enough away that she didn’t witness the horrors that came into his life. Sylvia was supposed to be an exception to the rule, a loophole, someone who was so carefully guarded from Cronus, the club, the nightmare inducing parts of her brother’s life.

Maddie comes to mind. He doesn’t want her to, not in this awful, bone crushing moment -- But she does, the thought of how differently this would all look with her in the picture. He thinks of himself being in Sylvia’s position, of Maddie sleeping in a hospital bed with IVs and an oxygen tube, of Rowan by her side, pushing hair from her forehead and telling her Everything’s okay, baby. He doesn’t want to think of her, not now. It feels like insult to injury, cruel of her memory to find him in moments like these -- When can barely stand on two feet, reminding him of what knocked him back and has kept him unsteady for the last seven and a half years. A picture of the delivery room follows, of his hand holding Rowan’s as she squeezes the dear life out of his. The excitement and terror of it all, anticipating the moment their daughter will arrive -- Just one more push, Rowan. You’re doing great, one more push. The silence that comes after. The way death comes over them like a wave, taking the one shining light with it, dropping them into a fog of despair. He can hear Rowan’s sobs against his chest, the sound of her muffled voice against the fabric of his shirt, pleading for this to be a lie, some cruel joke the doctor is playing on them. Please, God, anyone but her. Not her. Not her. Not her. He doesn’t want to think of that moment, of the way his life took a one-eighty after -- But he does. It always comes back to her.

He does the only thing he can think of, the one thing that will distract him from focusing on the beep of Benny’s heart monitor, from letting himself drown in the thought of his own loss.

She doesn’t answer. He doesn’t blame her.

He barely hears the beep over the ringing in his ears.

“She’s dead, and her kid -- Benny, he’s -- He’s okay. He’s -- I’m in Dallas, by the way -- They’ve got him on one of those oxygen tubes, they want to keep him here overnight to watch him, but --” This is all so fucking surreal. “Fuck, have you ever seen a kid hooked up to those IVs? A baby? Christsake, it’s -- He’s just so… small.” He pauses again, a choked laugh pushing past his lips. He’s surprised it’s not a sob. “She wants me to take him. She has it documented, somewhere, fuck if I know -- He’s supposed to be taken in by his next of kin. That’s me, baby.”

What else is he supposed to say? How’s your day been, baby? Sorry, I won’t be able to make our dinner reservation. Raincheck?

Another beat, he takes a moment to focus on his breathing. “I can’t do this alone, baby.” He finally lets out, his eyes falling shut, free hand moving to rub his eyes and prevent him from letting tears spill over. “I need you. I need you, and I -- Fuck, I don’t know what to do. I’m sorry. I love you. Call me back.”
