do you happen to have any recs ie: books/readings on christian mysticism + theology? i've read a bit about catherine of siena for a history class in university and found her fascinating but i'm not quite sure where further to look as i am very much unfamiliar with the subject - ty !!!! <3

a strange quirk, you might say, of christianity is that we have mystical theology but we struggle to make practical sense of it. mysticism, especially when it presents in women, is often treated as dreaminess or romanticized rather than as authoritative theology (meister eckhart, augustine, and john of the cross, for instance, are regarded as authoritative in a very different way than catherine, hildegard, or teresa of avila, even though all of these women are doctors of the church and were regarded authoritatively in their lifetime). so i'll recommend some theologians who work within mysticism, but i earnestly think that the best way to learn about mysticism is by reading mystical texts themselves, my recommendations of which i'll list below.

bernard mcginn is arguably the foremost authority on christian mysticism. the varieties of vernacular mysticism, the crisis of mysticism, and his anthology the essential writings of christian mysticism is a very good primer with a wide variety of texts. caroline bynum walker is not a theologian but she's another major authority: holy feast and holy fast, jesus as mother, and wonderful blood are good books, but she's written a lot of wonderful papers as well: i especially like her reply to leo steinberg and  women mystics and eucharistic devotion in the thirteenth century. michael sells is good too- a wonderful comparative religious theologian and i recommend his book mystical languages of unsaying.

in terms of mystics, simone weil's waiting for god and gravity and grace are indispensable; hildegard of bingen's scivias; teresa of avila's the interior castle, the way of perfection, and autobiography; marguerete porete's the mirror of simple souls; mechthild of magdeberg the flowing light of the godhead; mother maria skobtsova's essential writings; catherine of siena's dialogue; the book of margery kempe. you might also like the way of the cross by john of the cross and the work of meister eckhart. but i highly recommend getting mcginn's anthology- it was how i started off and is without a doubt the best way to begin getting a feel for mysticism.

St. John of the Cross: Spanish Carmelite priest, mystic and friar, who is a major figure of the Counter-Reformation in Spain, and he is one of the thirty-seven Doctors of the Church. John is known for his writings, and was mentored by and corresponded with the older Carmelite Teresa of Ávila. Both his poetry and his studies on the development of the soul, particularly his Noche Obscura, are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature and among the greatest works of all Spanish literature. Canonized a saint by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1926.

October 9 - Nao Midorikawa (Cure March)

St. Louis Bertrand: Spanish Dominican friar, confessor, missionary, and religious brother who is known as the ’Apostle of South America.’ After his ordination by St. Thomas of Villanova, he went to South America for his missionary work. According to legend, a deadly draught was administered to him by one of the native priests. Through Divine interposition, the poison failed to accomplish its purpose. There is a town festival, called La Tomatina in Buñol, Valencia, in his honor along with Mare de Déu dels Desemparats.

February 10 - Reika Aoki (Cure Beauty)

St. Scholastica: According to a tradition from the 9th century, she is the twin sister of St. Benedict. She is the foundress of the women’s branch of Benedictine Monasticism, and is the patron saint of nuns, education, and convulsive children, and is invoked against storms and rain, due to a narrative that can be found in the Dialogues by St. Gregory the Great.

March 17 - Ayumi Sakagami (Cure Echo)

St. Gertrude of Nivelles: 17th century Benedictine abbess who, with her mother Itta, founded the Abbey of Nivelles, now in Belgium. She is the patron saint of travelers, gardeners, against plague and cats.

SAINT OF THE DAY (August 9)

On August 9, the Catholic Church remembers St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein.

St. Teresa converted from Judaism to Catholicism in the course of her work as a philosopher and later entered the Carmelite Order.

She died in the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz in 1942.

Edith Stein was born on 12 October 1891 – a date that coincided with her family's celebration of Yom Kippur, the Jewish “day of atonement.”

Edith's father died when she was just two years old, and she gave up the practice of her Jewish faith as an adolescent.

As a young woman with profound intellectual gifts, Edith gravitated toward the study of philosophy and became a pupil of the renowned professor Edmund Husserl in 1913.

Through her studies, the non-religious Edith met several Christians whose intellectual and spiritual lives she admired.

After earning her degree with the highest honors from Gottingen University in 1915, she served as a nurse in an Austrian field hospital during World War I.

She returned to academic work in 1916, earning her doctorate after writing a highly-regarded thesis on the phenomenon of empathy.

She remained interested in the idea of religious commitment but had not yet made such a commitment herself.

In 1921, while visiting friends, Edith spent an entire night reading the autobiography of the 16th-century Carmelite nun St. Teresa of Avila.

“When I had finished the book,” she later recalled, “I said to myself: This is the truth.”

She was baptized into the Catholic Church on the first day of January 1922.

Edith intended to join the Carmelites immediately after her conversion but would ultimately have to wait another 11 years before taking this step.

Instead, she taught at a Dominican school and gave numerous public lectures on women's issues.

In 1931, she spent her time writing a study of St. Thomas Aquinas and took a university teaching position in 1932.

In 1933, the rise of Nazism, combined with Edith's Jewish ethnicity, put an end to her teaching career.

After a painful parting with her mother, who did not understand her Christian conversion, she entered a Carmelite convent in 1934, taking the name “Teresa Benedicta of the Cross” as a symbol of her acceptance of suffering.

“I felt,” she wrote, “that those who understood the Cross of Christ should take upon themselves on everybody's behalf.”

She saw it as her vocation “to intercede with God for everyone, but she prayed especially for the Jews of Germany whose tragic fate was becoming clear."

“I ask the Lord to accept my life and my death,” she wrote in 1939, “so that the Lord will be accepted by his people and that his kingdom may come in glory, for the salvation of Germany and the peace of the world.”

After completing her final work, a study of St. John of the Cross entitled “The Science of the Cross,” Teresa Benedicta was arrested along with her sister Rosa (who had also become a Catholic) and the members of her religious community on 7 August 1942.

The arrests came in retaliation against a protest letter by the Dutch Bishops, decrying the Nazi treatment of Jews.

Teresa Benedicta of the Cross died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz on 9 August 1942.

Pope John Paul II beatified her as a martyr on 1 May 1987 and then canonized 11 years later on 11 October 1998.

She is one of the six patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia, Cyril and Methodius, Bridget of Sweden, and Catherine of Siena.

Three sisters who were assassinated by their president

            The Mirabal sisters were four sisters from the Dominican Republic - Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa and Adela. They were born into a middle-class upbringing and attended university.

            Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa opposed the leadership of Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ruled between 1930-1961, and became the commander-in-chief of the Dominican army and eventually president. The US initially supported Trujillo when he became president in 1930, as he wasn’t a communist and believed he was a stable choice. Trujillo was corrupt and was involved in kidnappings, disappearances, murder and the rape. During his reign, he would have women attend his parties, when the sisters attended his party he propositioned Minerva, she refused. He didn’t like being told ‘no’, so she slapped him and she and her sisters left. To punish Minerva, he had her father imprisoned and tortured - the sisters wanted revenge. When Minerva and her mother were staying at a hotel, they were locked in the room until Minerva gave in and had sex with him. Instead of giving in, mother and daughter fled.

            Minerva founded the June 14 Revolutionary Movement with her husband Manolo Tavarez Justo, where her sister Maria also became involved. Patria didn’t have as much interest in political activity as her sisters but supported them and let them use her house to store weapons. They plotted to have Trujillo assassinated with bombs at a cattle fair he was to attend. Trujillo discovered the plot and the sisters were arrested and imprisoned. He released the sisters but kept their husbands in a remote prison.

            The sisters and their driver, Rufino de la Cruz were on their way to visit their husbands on 25 November 1960. On the way the women were beaten to death by those who worked for Trujillo, their bodies were left inside the vehicle and their car was pushed off a cliff to make it appear like an accident.

            The public turned on Trujillo for all the crimes he had committed, including this one and the US no longer supported him. In 1961, Trujillo was assassinated in his car by a group of seven Dominican men. Adela survived and looked after her sisters children and died in 2014.

            The women’s remains rest in a mausoleum that was declared an extension of the National Pantheon, in the Hermanas Mirabal House-Museum, where the sisters last lived.

She was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Bettye Cribbs and Dewery Montgomery. When Jade ultimately catches Christina and Sam having sex while he thought the others were sleeping, Jade tells the two of them to get out and when they don't, she leaves. When she returns the next day to pick up the children from school, she is horrified to learn that the children were picked up from school by Christina at lunchtime, and they are nowhere to be found.

Jade ultimately realizes that Christina has taken them to the loch in Scotland, where the two of them and other friends spent a weeks holiday that is a happy memory for Christina. Jade has ultimately figured out that Christina had become pregnant the night she left her at a party on her own, and a few weeks later, she suffered a miscarriage.

When she finds Christina and the children at the house where they spent that week, Christina confesses that it was never her that she wanted to harm...it was Sam. The person responsible for her pregnancy, and ectopic at that, as Christina shares, was Sam. Sam and Jade didn't meet until after university, and Christina is devastated to learn that Sam hasn't really changed, that he still has a front for women and spends his time being a sleazeball while his wife and children remain at home waiting for him to return all day. Even worse, Christina swears that their sexual encounter was not conseusal.

After the police arrive and saved the children and Jade, Sam meets up with them in the hospital. When confronted with what happened, Sam denies ever having raped Christina, and that he spent a lot of his last year at university sleeping with multiple women. For Jade, this is the straw that breaks the camels back, and she returns to her children.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT TERESA OF ÁVILA The First Female Doctor of the Church Feast Day: October 15

"Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, though all things pass, God does not change. Patience wins all things. But he lacks nothing who possesses God; for God alone suffices."

A Carmelite nun, the prominent mystic, religious reformer, author, theologian of the comtemplative life and of mental prayer, and the founder of the Discalced Carmelites, was born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, on March 28, 1515 in Ávila (modern-day Spain). Her paternal grandfather, Juan Sánchez de Toledo, was a marrano or converso, a Jew forced to convert to Christianity or emigrate.

When Teresa's father was a child, Juan was condemned by the Spanish Inquisition for allegedly returning to the Jewish faith, but he was later able to assume a Catholic identity. Alonso Sánchez de Cepeda, Teresa's father, was a successful wool merchant and one of the wealthiest men in Ávila. He bought a knighthood and assimilated successfully into Christian society. Alonso previously married to Catalina, with whom he had three children, and in 1509 in Gotarrendura, he married in to a woman named Beatriz de Ahumada y Cuevas.

She brought her up as a dedicated Christian. Fascinated by accounts of the lives of the saints, she ran away from home at age seven, with her brother Rodrigo, to seek martyrdom in the fight against the Moors. Her uncle brought them home, when he spotted them just outside the town walls. From an early age, she was much impressed by the thought of eternity, and developed a strong desire to consecrate her life to the Lord.

When her mother died, Teresa (now 11 years old) went before the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and implored with tears: 'From now on, you shall be my mother.'

At 20, much to the disappointment of her pious and austere father, she decided to enter the local easy-going Carmelite convent of the Incarnation, significantly built on top of land that had been used previously as a burial ground for Jews, but was scandalized by the relaxation of religious life. Visitors of all kinds were freely received, personal prayer, and meditation were neglected, and many members were idle and carefree. Nevertheless, she preserved in her vocation.

Notwithstanding the resistance of many ecclesiastics, in 1562, she founded at Ávila the Discalced Carmelites, whose members were committed to strict discipline and almost perpetual silence. They wore sandals instead of shoes as a sign of austerity and poverty. Six years later, together with John of the Cross, Teresa founded the Discalced Carmelite Friars in Duruelo. Intelligence was considered an essential requisite for the reformed nuns.

As Teresa said: 'A person can train herself to piety, but more hardly to intelligence. An intelligent mind is simple and submissive.'

Teresa enjoyed mystical revelations, and wrote many books filled with sublime doctrine. Teresa died in Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, on October 4, 1582, just as Catholic Europe was making the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. She was 67.

Her last words were: 'My Lord, it is time to move on. Well then, may your will be done. O my Lord and my Spouse, the hour that I have longed for has come. It is time to meet one another.'

Beatified by Pope Paul V on April 24, 1614 and canonized a saint by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622, her major shrine can be found at the Convent of the Annunciation in Alba de Tormes.

The Cortes Generales exalted her to patroness of Spain in 1627. The University of Salamanca had granted her the title 'Doctor ecclesiae' (Doctor of the Church) with a diploma in her lifetime, but that title is distinct from the papal honour of Doctor of the Church, which is always conferred posthumously.

The latter was finally bestowed upon her by Pope Paul VI on September 27, 1970, along with Catherine of Siena, making them the first women to be awarded the distinction.

SAINT OF THE DAY (September 5)

The Church celebrates on September 5 the feast of Mother Teresa, a universal symbol of God's merciful and preferential love for the poor and forgotten.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia, the youngest of three children.

She attended a youth group called Sodality, run by a Jesuit priest at her parish. Her involvement opened her to the call of service as a missionary nun.

She joined the Sisters of Loretto at age 17 and was sent to Calcutta where she taught at a high school.

She contracted tuberculosis and was sent to rest in Darjeeling.

It was on the train to Darjeeling that she received her calling — what she called "an order" from God to leave the convent and work and live among the poor.

At this point, she did not know that she was to found an order of nuns, or even exactly where she was to serve.

"I knew where I belonged, but I did not know how to get there," she said once, recalling the moment on the train.

Confirmation of the calling came when the Vatican granted her permission to leave the Sisters of Loretto and fulfill her calling under the Archbshop of Calcutta.

She started working in the slums, teaching poor children, and treating the sick in their homes.

She was joined a year later by some of her former students and together they took in men, women, and children who were dying in the gutters along the streets and cared for them.

In 1950, the Missionaries of Charity were born as a congregation of the Diocese of Calcutta.

In 1952, the government granted them a house from which to continue their service among Calcutta's forgotten.

The congregation very quickly grew from a single house for the dying and unwanted to nearly 500 around the world.

Mother Teresa set up homes for AIDS sufferers, for prostitutes, for battered women, and orphanages for poor children.

She often said that the poorest of the poor were those who had no one to care for them and no one who knew them.

She often remarked with sadness and desolation of millions of souls in the developed world whose spiritual poverty and loneliness was such an immense cause of suffering.

She was a fierce defender of the unborn saying:

"If you hear of any woman who does not want to keep her child and wants to have an abortion, try to persuade her to bring him to me. I will love that child, seeing in him the sign of God's love."

Mother Teresa died on 5 September 1997 and was beatified only six years later, on 19 October 2003.

Mother Teresa once said:

"A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace."

She also said:

"Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness."
