What we're watching today: Bad Lip Reading of MLB clips
Ever wonder what MLB players are saying to each on the field, or what a manager shouts at an umpire? It probably isn't "He's eating moss?" or "No cats, I hate cats! Now I can't be here." This Bad Lip Reading video of Major League Baseball clips is probably much, much better than the truth.

4 winners and 3 losers of the 2019 MLB trade deadline
Tumblr media
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
The trade deadline has come and gone, and MLB rosters have been reloaded for the post-season push. Despite the change to roster rules this year which removed the possibility of post-deadline waiver trades, we still got a flurry of moves after the supposed window had closed. A former Cy Young Award winner was the biggest name involved. Let’s start with him.
Winner: Zack Greinke
We didn’t get word of Houston landing Zack Greinke until 13 minutes after the 4 p.m. ET deadline:
BREAKING: #Astros get Greinke.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2019
If you want to label the Astros as the winners here I won’t quibble, but they were already a World Series favorite without him. Yes, Houston improved an already wonderful rotation by adding the veteran right-hander, but Greinke is a big gainer here too.
Greinke left a perennial contender in the Dodgers to take record money from the Diamondbacks. Arizona had designs on winning but only made the playoffs once in his first three seasons and are only on the fringes of contending this year. Now, Greinke is back with a loaded team, one expected to seriously for the World Series through the end of his contract in 2021.
The playoffs are better with Zack Greinke, so maybe we are the real winners.
Winner: Mets(?!)
Given that the Mets are the Mets, it feels weird to associate them with any sort of success, but the fact that they nabbed one of the most coveted starting pitchers on the block in Marcus Stroman is a win. Stroman is one of 12 qualified pitchers in MLB with a sub-3.00 ERA. His peripherals are solid, too: his 78 DRA- (anything below 100 is better than average) is better than fellow rumored trade subjects Robbie Ray (84) and Madison Bumgarner (89), to name a few.
There are questions about Stroman’s fit with the Mets. His 56.3-percent ground ball rate is second among MLB qualified starters, while New York’s infield defense is atrocious. The Mets rank in the bottom six teams in FanGraphs defense at second base, third base, and shortstop., and are in the bottom five in Defensive Runs Saved by infielders, per Sports Info Solutions.
But once you factor in that the Mets’ only cost was two minor leaguers that weren’t rated very highly, this trade becomes more favorable for New York.
Other teams selling pitchers are very annoyed at the Blue Jays return for Stroman, which one rival called “dogs*it.” If that’s all it took to get Stroman, fear is the price goes down for other pitchers unde control
— Andy Martino (@martinonyc) July 30, 2019
Text from an American League executive: "The Blue Jays' return for Stroman is embarrassing compared to what the Indians just got for Bauer."
— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) July 31, 2019
That the Mets also kept Noah Syndergaard means they are at least set up well for 2020, with a rotation headed by Jacob deGrom, Syndergaard, Stroman, and Steven Matz. An improvement at minimal cost makes this an easy win for the Mets.
Loser: Dodgers
For weeks it has been obvious that the Dodgers needed a bullpen upgrade — not to make the playoffs, which a lock at this point, but to improve their chances in October. They didn’t get Felipe Vazquez from the Pirates, they didn’t get Will Smith from the Giants, and they didn’t even Ken Giles from Toronto. None were traded. But Jake Diekman and Shane Greene were, and the Dodgers didn’t bite. Maybe the price was too high, who knows?
Los Angeles did get a left-handed reliever in Adam Kolarek, but had an otherwise underwhelming trade deadline. The Dodgers must be betting big on their internal options, perhaps planning on moving hard-throwing young starters Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May to the bullpen, along with Kenta Maeda and Julio Urias playing major relief roles down the stretch.
Winner: Indians
On its face, the idea of Cleveland trading one of its best starting pitchers while holding the top American League wild card spot seems absurd, even coming from a team that seemed so complacent about its playoff chances that it’s sleepwalked through two straight offseasons.
But then we see the return for Bauer, and it makes much more sense. Five players came to Cleveland in the deal: Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes immediately help an Indians offense that ranks just 10th in the AL in runs per game (they’re third in runs allowed per game). Cleveland can slot Reyes at designated hitter, where his bad defense won’t hurt them, and the Indians added long-term plays in pitcher Logan Allen, a top-100 prospect before this season, Victor Nova and Scott Moss.
Losing Bauer, MLB’s leader in innings pitched in 2019, is a blow for Cleveland, but with this trade it’s clear the Indians are betting on the returns of ace Corey Kluber (limited to just seven starts this season with a broken forearm), Danny Salazar, and Carlos Carrasco, in order to shore up a rotation currently headed by Shane Bieber and MacGyver’s paper clip and gum wrapper. If the (likely) playoff-bound Indians can get any kind of pitching this October, they’ll now have a better offense to go with it.
Loser: Yankees
Like the Astros and Dodgers, the Yankees’ berth in October is all but secured. But with injuries mounting and a struggling starting rotation, New York sought pitching. Then they saw two of their reported targets in Stroman and Bauer went to non-contending teams. The Yankees did make one trade on July 31, but it was boring as hell.
The Yankees have acquired LHP Alfredo Garcia from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for RHP Joseph Harvey.
— Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) July 31, 2019
That’s not going to move the needle.
Winner: Yasiel Puig
Throughout his career, Yasiel Puig has been a must-watch player. You just never know what you’ll see.
In 2015 we thought we had the definitive post-trade reaction of a player on the field when Wilmer Flores was crying when he learned he was headed to Milwaukee. That trade ultimately didn’t happen which made the moment even more bizarre, but that image of Flores has been usurped by a ready-to-duel Puig on Tuesday night:
Tumblr media
This is Puig playing a starring role in a mass brawl on behalf of his Cincinnati teammates after being traded to Cleveland. He was only with the Reds for four months, but he leaves a legend.
Loser: Tanner Roark
Roark was driving ahead to Cincinnati’s next stop, in Atlanta, when he learned he had been dealt to the A’s. His delicious processed meat was rudely interrupted with the news of his new destination.
Tanner Roark learned of his trade in an @arbys parking lot. He wanted a beef and cheddar (and curly fries). He was driving to Atlanta, where he lives in the off-season. @JonHeyman approves. He will not be driving to Oakland
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) July 31, 2019
By sending minor league outfielder Jameson Hannah to the Reds, the A’s were able to meat Cincinnati’s demand. It’s just too bad that Roark’s roast beef quest was interrupted, even briefly.
[Ed note: we’re sorry. Eric insisted]

Top 10 things that need that happen in sports.
1. The Minnesota Vikings need to retire the #84. Randy Moss not only is considered the GOAT but single handily change the way the game of football was played.
2. The Minnesota Timberwolves need to retire the number #21. When KG entered the league and was drafted, the team was worth 90 million dollars, after years of success and putting the team on his back, he was trade and the value of the club was 400 million. A lot of that value comes from KG and what he meant to this franchise. It’s criminal that his number isn’t retired.
3. Seattle and the city of Las Vegas deserve an NBA franchise. After seeing the response to the Golden Knights, and the raiders coming to town, the city of Las Vegas is the next major sports town. Seattle was robbed of the Supersonics, and with them getting an NHL franchise, Seattle should get their NBA team back, it’s just not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.
4.  Move New Orleans and Memphis to the West. If you add 2 more teams to the east, it would leave an advantage of 2 more to the west over the east. These are the only 2 teams near the Mississippi River that could justify the move.
5.  The NFL needs to acknowledge the marketing idea of American football in London is a failed experiment. It’s a cause of concern for players and NFL logistics, and the key factor; American football will never go over in England, it’s a soccer country. There is no way this is a win for the NFL.
6. More Football in Hawaii. I liked the idea of having the pro bowl in Hawaii, it offered something different. If the pro bowl is no longer an option, at the very least we could do some preseason games at Aloha Stadium.  I know as a Vikings fan, if LA was playing a home game against the Vikings in august at Aloha Stadium I would most definitely go. Plus, there are too many Polynesian and Samoan football players in the league for this not to be a thing.
7. Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson to the Hall of Fame.  The MLB needs to put its age old ego aside and do the right thing. Joe was acquitted of cheating during the 1919 World Series and it’s a damn shame he isn’t in the hall, the man loved the game so much he would play under a fake alias in different farm leagues just to keep playing the game. As for Pete, I think his contributions to the game and the penitence he has paid thus far is enough. The MLB can’t point their finger when their own hands are dirty. There’s a difference between innocence and complicit denial of one’s own wrong doings and failure. Something the MLB needs to recognize involving this matter.
8. Cold Weather cities in the MLB need to play the first couple weeks of the season on the road. Fans aren’t going to come out and watch crappy baseball just to be cold. As a twins fan they’re doing really well thus far and can’t put asses in the seats. Now part of that is because during the target field era, they’ve been shit. There’s too much lost revenue when clubs are at 44% capacity like the twins are and some of the numbers reported are more than likely inflated due to the season ticket holders who don’t show. If we started after Jackie Robinson Day I think it would be much more profitable during the course of the season for clubs. #putaroofonit
9. Thanksgiving Day games in the NFL need to be division rivals. Now I am being completely selfish with this one because I am and Vikings Fan and live in Minnesota but I find it a little more entertaining when its either the lions vs any one of their division rivals or the cowboys vs any of in the east. Rival games will always draw more and have more of a meaning. And for the third game, make it a rivalry matchup but make it a good one like the Rams Vs Seahawks, not the Jags vs Titans. No one wants to see that shit.
10. College Football needs grow to an 8 or 12 team playoff. Nothing else has worked and they can’t seem to get this shit right. The definition of insanity is doing the same old thing over and over again expecting different results.

Thank you platoapproved and meyerlansky for getting me back on the West Wing catch-up train, because sometimes it’s good to allow yourself an optimistic political fantasyland full of people who want to do good and love each other and also can read.
Actually, watching this especially close to finishing Richard Goodwin’s memoir, it’s so obvious how The West Wing is Aaron Sorkin’s resurrected imaginary of the Kennedy years, if Jed Bartlett was not a veteran or adulterer with a ridiculously anti-Semitic father (well, I’m only five episodes into the second season, so I guess there’s still time): a New England intellectual hiding a secret disease, saddled with a southern VP who seriously dislikes him and was supposed to win in the first place, a lot of idealism hampered by a need to satisfy everyone, assassinations.  And hey, Aaron, I get it.  You may be naive and nostalgic, but at least you’re earnest.
Still, Aaron, buddy, I realize that my man William Goldman vouches for you, but you don’t get to pull two separate ‘let’s take the Torah literally’ monologues when you don’t know which commandment is which.   (Honor thy mother and father is neither the first or third, but the fifth.) (Ah, but I’m easy, the moment when Josh looks at the picture of his grandfather, the Holocaust survivor, totally got me.)
Speaking of, the before and/or while they were famous casting is mind-boggling - Elisabeth Moss? Lisa Edelstein?  John Laroquette running around with a bat arguing about Gilbert and Sullivan? Let’s not even get to Carl Lumbly. Why is Carl Lumbly not in everything?  I say that everytime I see Carl Lumbly in something and it’s still true.
The Jackal.  Is anything else needed.
And Toby...my dear Toby. I don’t know what part of Toby I relate to more: snarking on the guacamole guy, editing for missing verbs over someone’s shoulder, or being enraged about dating within the MLB division. (No, maybe Toby and the pandas. Or Toby’s obsession with PBS.)
I know it’s early days, but it’s really rare when you unreservedly love all of a show’s characters and I love all of the show’s characters, and their love for each other. Sam running away with Josh in the rain to follow their dreams? Come on.  The power-up moment when everyone gets frustrated with how they’re doing nothing and the Leo throws over the ship? Amazing.

Who is the greatest video game NFL player of all time?
Tumblr media
Bo Jackson? Randy Moss? Michael Vick?
Bo Jackson’s tenure as a pro athlete was brief. The 1985 Heisman Trophy winner was both an MLB All-Star and NFL Pro Bowler, but his football career lasted just 38 games before a bum hip took him from the gridiron and seriously impacted his abilities on the basepaths. Jackson’s candle burned bright, but was ultimately snuffed out before he could capitalize on his potential as an all-time great.
But his legend will live on forever, thanks in part to Tecmo.
The Japanese video game maker made Jackson an unstoppable force for the Los Angeles Raiders in its 1987 game Tecmo Bowl, then turned him into the kind of monster digital sprites still see in their 8-bit nightmares in 1991’s Super Tecmo Bowl. With unreal strength and speed and the ability to quickly move in any of the Nintendo D-pads four directions, Tecmo Bo became as much of a presence as the real thing. The most-watched YouTube video of actual Jackson’s NFL highlights has more than 689,000 views. A 113-second clip of him dodging digital Patriots during an eating up an entire quarter’s worth of game time on a single kick return has nearly 2.4 million:
youtube
Jackson isn’t the only player whose amazing athleticism made him an overclocked menace to virtual defenses. Several players in Tecmo Super Bowl were given superhuman traits that allowed them to garner 600 yards in a game of a dozen sacks, from stars like Barry Sanders to retired-upon-release players like Scott Studwell. Madden 2004 put Michael Vick on its cover and then made him a demi-god in its code. Eric Metcalf, with his 99 speed rating, was a screen pass game-breaker a decade earlier.
But who was the best; the player against whom the most controllers were hurled into walls and smashed into coffee tables? Which player made you whine like a child whenever your opponent simply picked his team?
Tecmo Super Bowl’s Lawrence Taylor
Jackson gets all the press, but there were plenty of game-breaking running backs in the 1991 game — Sanders and Christian Okoye foremost among them — that could create similarly insane highlights. There was only one Lawrence Taylor.
Taylor, lined up along the edge of the Giants’ 3-4 defense, was an unblockable monster as fast as any skill player on the field. Offensive linemen were duckpins in his path, tumbling backward in tragic three-act plays that always ended the same way; with video LT rising into frame of a cut scene, arms raised in triumph and celebrating his latest sack.
But while Taylor was a beast on the pass rush, his most valuable trait was making field goals an impossibility. Tecmo Super Bowl threw him into the center of New York’s special teams units, lining him up directly over the snap. All you had to do to block any kick that required a modicum of thought was hold down left or right, wait a fraction of a second, then slide right through Morten Andersen’s now extremely broken legs. If you’re facing fourth-and-long in opponent territory against the Giants, just go for it. — Christian D’Andrea
Madden 2004’s Michael Vick
It cannot be overstated just how stupidly good Michael Vick was in Madden 2004. Even if you created players with identical stats, it still didn’t result in the kind of utter destruction sown by Vick. He was ridiculously fast, ridiculously agile, accurate enough to make any throw from any position on the field, and could run around entire defenses twice over in a single play.
It’s not JUST that Vick could run really fast — it’s that he could drop back, wait for his protection to break down, run around the silly defenders, and then either pick up a big gain on the ground or fire off an on-the-run pass that always made it to the receiver. He’d devour hundreds of yards rushing and passing every single game, especially when controlled by a human opponent.
There is a special spot in the bad place for childhood friends that refused to play as anybody but the Falcons. — James Brady
Anyone who disagrees is wrong. — Richard Johnson
Madden 2004’s Randy Moss
Everyone is familiar with Michael Vick, but let’s not forget how godly Randy Moss was in this version either. All you had to do was run a go route with him and that’s an automatic touchdown. He was tall enough to a point where the cornerback animations didn’t even matter. If you double-teamed him, he would OUTRUN the double coverage and still be open. As soon as the other cornerback turned around, they were beaten.
Moss doesn’t get talked about much because this style of play is monotonous and not as fun as playing as Michael Vick. However, that just speaks to how much of a mismatch he is for everyone in the game. — Kofie Yeboah
Tecmo Super Bowl’s Bo Jackson
You saw the clip above, right? Bo could do that every. play. — Christian D’Andrea
Madden 2003’s Marshall Faulk
Faulk got cover duties this year, so of course he was going to be overpowered — but not by much. The Hall of Fame tailback was a few years removed from his peak by ‘03, but the game didn’t care, making him a 99 overall player who could ruin defenses either on the ground or as a receiver. No one was catching up to Faulk on a wheel route, which made the Rams unstoppable ... against the computer, at least. — Christian D’Andrea
Which NFL player has your vote as the video game GOAT?

Giants Report Card: Grading Big Blue at the bye week
New Post has been published on https://usnewsaggregator.com/giants-report-card-grading-big-blue-at-the-bye-week/
Giants Report Card: Grading Big Blue at the bye week
Ben McAdoo refused in September to provide his grade for Eli Manning’s Week 1 performance.
“You want me to give you the grade for Eli?” McAdoo said, confounded by the question. “You think I’m going to stand up here and give you the grade for a player? No.”
And that’s where we come in. The Giants are 1-6 at their Week 8 bye, so it’s time to grade the players, coaches and management individually to reveal the biggest disappointments and the silver linings.
Players are listed by percentage of snaps played, rounded down, to illustrate both their durability and importance. They are evaluated by their play on the field and are not penalized for injuries. Here we go:
Cowboys cut Damontre Moore, who raised fist at end of anthem
Head coach Ben McAdoo gets a D at the bye week as Pat Leonard grades the 1-6 Giants.
(Dustin Bradford/Getty Images)
MANAGEMENT
Jerry Reese, GM Grade: F
Misjudged team’s quality and needs, stuck with poor O-line, prioritized Brandon Marshall in free agency.
Ben McAdoo, Head Coach Grade: D
Poor play-calling, stubbornness, inconsistent discipline, 30th-ranked offense (16 points per).
Giants worked out former Idaho, Bills punter/kicker Austin Rehkow
Steve Spagnuolo, Defensive Coordinator Grade: D
A mystery why Giants defense forgot in offseason how to tackle, stop the run and protect leads.
OFFENSE
Eli Manning
(Al Bello/Getty Images)
Eli Manning, QB (100% of 445 offensive snaps played) Grade: C-
Evan Engram’s rookie season making Giants offense worth watching
Ranks 19th in NFL with 86.1 QB rating. Seven turnovers to 11 TDs. Let down by O-line & defense, too.
Ereck Flowers, LT (100%) Grade: D
Cost Giants enormously in Weeks 2 and 3. Tackles’ pass protection problems forced McAdoo to change entire offense.
Justin Pugh, RT/LG (91%) Grade: A
By taking responsibility, Jerry Reese giving reason to be fired
Tough, versatile, durable and the Giants’ most consistent lineman. Moved from left guard to right tackle.
John Jerry, LG/RG (87%) Grade: D+
Involved in a lot of the failed stunt block pickups and culpable in the poor run game.
Evan Engram, TE (80%) Grade: B+
Giants GM Jerry Reese takes the blame for 1-6 start
Special talent. Had growing pains, early TD celebration penalty and some drops, but he’s the offense’s best option and leads all NFL rookies in receiving yards.
Brett Jones, C (73%) Grade: A-
Beaten for a big Manning fumble in Week 7, but Jones’ strong play at center in Weston Richburg’s absence has been eye-opening.
Sterling Shepard, WR (61%) Grade: B+
Jerry Reese, with minimal moves, seemed to believe Giants ‘hype’
Was on his way to a big season until he reinjured his left ankle. Has played well when healthy.
Brandon Marshall
(Robert Deutsch/USA Today Sports)
Brandon Marshall, WR (57%) Grade: F
Never acclimated fully, dropped passes and looked disengaged. Preseason shoulder injury may have affected him more than he let on.
D.J. Fluker, RG (56%) Grade: C+
Sterling Shepard hoping to become leader with Giants
Has helped run game, but this team needed Fluker to have a better training camp to start in Week 1.
Weston Richburg
(Elsa/Getty Images)
Weston Richburg, C (54%) Grade: A-
Again the Giants’ second-best lineman behind Pugh before he suffered a concussion.
Roger Lewis Jr., WR (51%) Grade: D+
Don’t expect Giants to sit Eli Manning, says Ben McAdoo
Great TD catch vs. Chargers but made two huge mistakes as punt gunner: overran Detroit’s Jamal Agnew on TD return and failed to down ball outside end zone in Tampa.
Odell Beckham Jr., WR (47%) Grade: B
Game-changer when healthier (Weeks 3, 4) but had dog-peeing TD celebration and six drops, per Pro Football Focus.
Rhett Ellison, TE (46%) Grade: C+
As Giants spiral out of control, Ben McAdoo urges team to reset
Big missed tackle on Agnew’s punt return TD in Week 2. Valuable run blocker but underutilized early.
Bobby Hart, RT (36%) Grade: F
Though it’s a small sample size, when healthy, Hart has been even worse than Flowers.
Shane Vereen, RB (31%) Grade: D
6 tough decisions Giants need to make during bye week
Hasn’t made a noticeable difference. Lots of late-game yardage.
Paul Perkins, RB (24%) Grade: D
Can’t give Perkins an ‘F’ with how poorly line blocked for him and how few screens McAdoo called for him, but needs to be better when healthy.
Tavarres King, WR (23%) Grade: C
Giants sustain injuries to B.J. Goodson and Justin Pugh
Like Lewis, needs to make more of a difference as one of leaders of new receiving corps.
Orleans Darkwa, RB (23%) Grade: A
His 5.4 yards per carry average is no joke. Dropped a few passes in Week 5, but Darkwa, Pugh and Engram are the offense’s best.
Wayne Gallman, RB (21%) Grade: C+
Controversial touchdown call strikes again as Giants on short end
A hard, encouraging runner but has to work on ball security and needs to pop some big gains.
Travis Rudolph, WR (12%) Grade: D
Can’t understand why he and Manning were on such different pages against Seattle.
Jerell Adams, TE (8%): C-
No more false hope, Giants’ season is officially over
Huge catch vs. Lions but whiffed on his man on Seahawks’ blocked punt.
Matt LaCosse, TE (5%) Grade: B
Entered the offensive rotation with the three-TE set vs. Seattle. Has talent.
Shane Smith, FB (2%) Grade: B
Olivier Vernon kneels during national anthem for Giants again
Smith mostly blocked well before being released to practice squad. Special teams hurt him.
DEFENSE
Eli Apple, DB (93%) Grade: C-
First 3.5 weeks were horrible. Last 3.5 weeks he’s been better, sometimes excellent. But not enough.
Landon Collins (21)
(Joe Robbins/Getty Images)
Landon Collins, SS (93%) Grade: B-
Giants fall to Seahawks, 24-7, to drop to 1-6 as offense stumbles
Still a stud but beaten by Bucs’ Cameron Brate to seal Week 4 loss. Strong vs. Seattle but has more.
Darian Thompson, FS (93%) Grade: D+
Really difficult start. Seems to have corrected his tackling, but it hurt Giants badly early.
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE (92%) Grade: B-
Still a handful for opposing tackles, but hasn’t disrupted games often enough and did nothing in Tampa.
Janoris Jenkins, DB (82%) Grade: B
Still a top corner. Not the reason the Giants defense has struggled, other than Eagles’ final pass that Jenkins and Apple couldn’t knock down.
B.J. Goodson, MLB (58%) Grade: C+
Mean and tough and likeable leader but has struggled in pass coverage.
Devon Kennard, LB/DE (57%) Grade: C+
Quietly has played well at points, but needs to make more big plays like he did at times vs. Seahawks.
Damon Harrison, DT (57%) Grade: A
The only Giant defender to consistently dominate. Quiet most postgames, though.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, DB (55%) Grade: F
The last thing this team needed at 0-5 was a veteran walking out of the facility in a huff.
Jonathan Casillas, LB (54%) Grade: D+
Not sure he was ever healthy, but struggled with tackling.
Dalvin Tomlinson, DT (53%) Grade: B
Athletic, disrupts offenses.
Keenan Robinson, LB (52%) Grade: C+
Back from a concussion, Robinson has been just OK but improving.
Olivier Vernon, DE (41%) Grade: B
Ankle injury was a killer. He’s a monster.
Jay Bromley, DT (37%) Grade: C+
Played well vs. the Seahawks.
Kerry Wynn, DE (32%) Grade: A
Giants’ most underrated player this season in terms of consistency, effectiveness and effort.
Ross Cockrell, DB (27%) Grade: D
Not a fan. His alarming decision to avoid a tackle against Detroit is impossible to forget.
Avery Moss, DE (20%) Grade: B-
Hard-nosed player but lack of speed has kept him from contributing on special teams.
Robert Thomas, DT (18%) Grade: D+
Not having a great year in limited playing time.
Calvin Munson, LB (18%) Grade: B-
Smart and diligent, a good special teamer, poised in Week 2 when starting at MLB.
Romeo Okwara, DE (15%) Grade: C-
Hasn’t had impact on games like he did as a rookie, took bad angle on Agnew’s punt return.
Donte Deayon, DB (12%) Grade: B-
Deserves more playing time.
Andrew Adams, FS (10%) Grade: B-
Hasn’t excelled in minimal defensive play but leads entire team in special teams snaps, a good backup.
Curtis Grant, LB (6%) Grade: B-
Want to see Grant play more. Has speed on special teams, just got into defensive rotation vs. ’Hawks.
Nat Berhe, SS (6%) Grade: B
Berhe isn’t on the field with the defense much, but whenever he is, he seems to make a play. Big special teams contributor.
Michael Hunter, DB (7%) Grade: A-
Had a great camp, lightning fast as a gunner in Denver. Deserved more opportunities before he got hurt.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Aldrick Rosas, K Grade: C-
Has missed a field goal in three straight games. Refused to address media after loss in Tampa.
Brad Wing, P Grade: D+
Shanks vs. Philly and Bucs cost Giants dearly.
Zak DeOssie, LS Grade: B
Reliable snapping and leadership but also victimized on Agnew’s return in Week 2.
Dwayne Harris, WR (45%) Grade: B-
Made several plays as a gunner, didn’t cost team with bad return decisions, but didn’t break any big ones before his season-ending toe injury.

Ranking the MLB teams soon after Week fourteen of the year

Ranking the MLB teams soon after Week fourteen of the year
As the year enters the All-Star break, it’s time to hold the massive image in watch. The Dodgers feel to have kicked into a different gear, but they are continue to splitting the to start with-location votes with the Astros, who continue to handily dominate the AL standings. And the reigning globe champs will head into the 2nd half outside the house the ranks of baseball’s finest and below .five hundred.
But while we have all those two dominating teams up front in the rankings, within the best ten the Pink Sox, Indians and Brewers all made slight gains that indicate that they are ready to exploit an unsettled subject over and above the best two. All 3 teams could consider cost of their division races and most likely elevate themselves into that unique company.
What could hold that from taking place? The Pink Sox have the Yankees and Rays not as well much driving, the Brewers undoubtedly cannot faux the Cubs and Cardinals are done, but the Indians might have the most to get worried about soon after the Royals’ rebound carried them a different 5 rungs up in the rankings, all the up to No. twelve at the break, the one most important go made by any group this 7 days. The Braves and Marlins attained four spots apiece in the other significant upward moves, while the quick-fading Orioles dropped a different 5 slots to accomplish the most important decline.
This week’s voters are Bradford Doolittle, Eric Karabell, Tim Kurkjian, David Schoenfield and Mark Simon.
Week 13 rankings | Week twelve | Week 11 | Week ten | Week nine | Week eight | Week 7 | Week 6 | Week 5 | Week four | Week three | Week 2 | Week 1 | Preseason
History: sixty one-29 Week 13 position: No. 1
How hot have the Dodgers been? They’ve gained 26 of their previous thirty, seventeen of their previous twenty and nine of their previous ten. It is just not unrealistic to start speaking about their shot at winning a hundred and ten online games or additional. Do they will need everything? Probably they trade for a to start with baseman or a remaining fielder, but when you might be this hot, it is just not like they have to up grade whichever situation Cody Bellinger won’t engage in. With Adrian Gonzalez due again from the DL, they are improved off evaluating what he has remaining, for the reason that subsequent year’s $22.four million dedication makes for a seriously massive cash salad to eat. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: sixty-29 Week 13 position: No. 2
Anticipations for when Dallas Keuchel will return hold seeming to get pushed again, but the Astros can afford to pay for to run out the clock in the entirely lifeless AL West race and should as a substitute act on what only they can know — if his neck personal injury sufficient of a worry for them to go browsing for Jose Quintana. But one offer they will not will need to make is trading for aid at to start with base Yuli Gurriel is finally coming into his possess, getting put up a .981 OPS since June 1. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: 52-36 Week 13 position: No. three
Ok, so Max Scherzer wasn’t heading to be totally invincible without end, displaying he was human by letting four operates to the Braves on Friday. But Scherzer continue to finishes the All-Star Split averaging twelve.1 strikeouts for each nine innings with a WHIP of .78. He is the to start with pitcher to have a WHIP that lower and a K/nine that higher at the All-Star Split (minimum sixty innings). — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information
History: fifty-39 Week 13 position: No. 5
The Pink Sox go on to increase their direct in the AL East. Their offense has been hot, but it’s not your father’s Sox who bludgeon opponents with residence operates. This offense will get on base and is aggressive on the base paths. The Sox engage in terrific protection, and their starting up rotation is anchored by Chris Sale‘s dominance, but Drew Pomeranz and David Rate have the two pitched improved currently, as well. — Michael Bonzagni, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 53-36 Week 13 position: No. four
The Snakes slither into the break getting misplaced a very little bit of steam. Fernando Rodney blew consecutive help save possibilities to deliver a reminder that the D-backs should be browsing for ideal-handed-relief aid. A little slump and fewer possibilities to run might have silenced early chatter about Paul Goldschmidt‘s bids for a triple crown or to put up a thirty-thirty year, but he is yet the NL WAR chief at the break. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: forty seven-40 Week 13 position: No. 7
The Indians are again in cost of their possess fate many thanks to a great mix of previous and new strengths. Corey Kluber appears like the AL’s ace of aces as he places up his finest 12 months since his Cy year, while the bullpen has an MLB-finest 2.84 Period to aid mute questions about the relaxation of the rotation. But the most important tale has to be the breakout of Jose Ramirez as the majors’ leading swap-hitter with a .988 OPS that places him in MLB’s best ten in general. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: 45-41 Week 13 position: No. 6
The Yankees bullpen has been a worry, but with rookies such as Clint Frazier manufacturing in the ninth inning and onward, they have continue to identified techniques to get. Frazier’s walk-off residence run Saturday made him the fifth-youngest in Yankees heritage with a walk-off residence run, according to Elias. Only Mickey Mantle (twice), Joe DiMaggio and Melky Cabrera walked off for the group in the Bronx at a younger age. — Sarah Langs, ESPN Stats & Information
History: fifty-41 Week 13 position: No. nine
The Brewers have held their NL Central direct heading into the break, and there’s absolutely nothing fluky about it. They have the fourth-finest run differential in the NL, and their record is accurately what you would count on primarily based on their run differential. They can mash — they have 6 gamers with at minimum ten residence operates, tied for most amid NL teams. They’re just ten-11 in one-run online games and three-7 in further-inning contests. On the lookout forward, they have the 3rd-most straightforward timetable in the 2nd half. — John Fisher, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 52-39 Week 13 position: No. eight
Just before Kyle Freeland‘s no-hit bit ended the to start with half on an up observe, the drop-off from the Rockies’ rookies in the rotation was just one cause they have stumbled to 5-13 since boasting the NL’s finest record twenty days ago. The bullpen is 24th in OPS while placing up a four.94 Period since the conclusion of May perhaps. And several of the non-Arenados in the lineup have struggled, specially Mark Reynolds and Trevor Tale — the two putting out additional than 40 percent of the time throughout the slide. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: forty seven-forty three Week 13 position: No. ten
Alex Cobb chipped additional than 3-quarters of a run off his Period with a great 6-start run right before the All-Star Split in which he delivered a 2.38 Period and allowed just two residence operates in 41 2/three IP. With Cobb seeking additional like his previous self and Jacob Faria off to a stunning start, the Rays can toss a pretty formidable trio out there with Chris Archer topping the rotation. That could make it possible for them to hold in wild-card contention all the way down the extend. — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information
History: forty three-45 Week 13 position: 11
Joe Maddon held a group meeting on Thursday right before his group experienced an 11-2 bludgeoning at the fingers of the NL Central-leading Brewers. In accordance to the Elias Sporting activities Bureau, the Cubs have the sixth-worst record at the All-Star break amid teams to get at minimum one hundred online games the former year. — Paul Hembekides, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 44-forty three Week 13 position: No. seventeen
The Royals have the finest record in the AL since June 1, and the great information keeps coming. Danny Duffy was great versus the Mariners in his return from the DL, and Jason Vargas continue to ranks amid the Period leaders. Every person is hitting except Alex Gordon and Brandon Moss. Buying and selling for a DH if Moss continues to struggle should be within the Royals’ get to, but introducing a different reliever would also aid. — Michael Bonzagni, ESPN Stats & Information
History: forty three-45 Week 13 position: No. twelve
The great information: Texas is one of the 5 teams this year bidding to rating the maximum percentages of its operates scored on homers in MLB heritage. Even improved information? The offense is heating up, averaging 5.four operates for each match since June 1. So what keeps pulling the Rangers again down about .five hundred? You almost certainly know their bullpen is tied for the MLB direct in blown saves, but their trouble in the pen run further — they are 2nd in inherited baserunners allowed to rating and rank twenty sixth in OPS allowed. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: 45-forty three Week 13 position: No. sixteen
As the Twins engage in significant online games in the AL Central and wild-card races in the 2nd half for the to start with time in a while, one difficulty they are heading to have to correct is their residence record. They’re 25-fifteen on the highway, the 2nd-finest winning share on the highway in the AL driving the league-leading Astros. Flip that venue to Focus on Industry and the Twins are just twenty-28, the worst residence record in the AL. The Twins presently have a .417 winning share at residence no group in the Divisional Period (since 1969) has made the playoffs with a winning share that lower at residence in a full year (excluding strike decades). In truth, only one group has done it below .five hundred at all: the 2001 Braves (.494). — Sarah Langs, ESPN Stats & Information
History: forty three-45 Week 13 position: No. fifteen
Baseball daily life is just not usually fair, specially when it arrives to wins and losses. Adam Wainwright is ten-5 with a 5.twenty Period, but Carlos Martinez is 6-eight with a three.40 Period and Mike Leake is 6-7 with a three.twelve Period. Leake’s record should be noticeably improved. He has 6 no-decisions or losses in online games in which he allowed two earned operates or fewer. Most likely if his solid run continues, improved issues will be in retail outlet for him and the Cardinals in the 2nd half. — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 45-forty seven Week 13 position: No. 13
The All-Star break arrives at an great time for the limping Angels, losers of 7 of their previous ten as they anticipate finding Mike Trout again. Remarkably, Trout enters the break rated eighth in the AL in WAR irrespective of missing 45 online games. Trout’s return is just not the only vital to the Angels’ 2nd half — how rapidly and how very well Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs and Garrett Richards return will establish whether the Angels will need to trade for starting up pitching to continue to be in the race or start speaking about subsequent 12 months. — Paul Hembekides, ESPN Stats & Information
History: forty three-forty seven Week 13 position: No. fourteen
Just when you thought endurance was heading to pay back off for standard supervisor Jerry Dipoto as the Mariners clawed their way again into contention, their existing four-ten tumble pushed them down towards the again of the AL’s wild-card pack. Further than the personal injury-wracked rotation, Kyle Seager ‘s slump might be lead to for worry. Because the calendar flipped to June, pitchers are providing him a heavier diet regime of off-speed things, leading to a ton of weak speak to (and a .231 BABIP) for a man who feasts on fastballs. — Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com
History: 41-forty seven Week 13 position: No. 18
The Blue Jays have just 41 wins at the break, their fewest since 2004, when they had 39. That 2004 group went 67-94, their worst record since 1996. Which is also the year John Gibbons took in excess of — the to start with time about. Even though the pitching has struggled, their most up-to-date woe is their latest outage on offense — they are one of 3 teams scoring fewer than four operates for each match since June 1, joining the Padres and Phillies. — Sarah Langs, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 42-45 Week 13 position: No. 23
Because having two of 3 from the Nationals in the middle of June, the Braves have been one of the finest teams in baseball. Matt Adams continues to mash the ball since coming in excess of from the Cardinals, and as a group, they have been coming up massive with runners in scoring situation. And Freddie Freeman has additional some punch since coming off the DL, with a hit in all 6 online games (and half have been for further bases). But they have a rough timetable soon after the break, participating in the D-backs (in two series), Cubs and Dodgers. — John Fisher, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 42-forty seven Week 13 position: No. 22
Kudos to Sunday Evening Baseball’s Aaron Boone, who predicted on the May perhaps 28 Mets-Pirates telecast that Andrew McCutchen was about to have a significant breakthrough. The trouble is that the Pirates have not long gone there with him, heading just 19-twenty since. To be identified at the deadline: Do they trade McCutchen for what would very likely be the finest prospect package deal a group could get, or do they hold on and workout his $fourteen.seventy five million group selection with the intent of heading for the brass ring in 2018? — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 41-46 Week 13 position: No. 25
The Marlins have had a great 7 days heading into the break, averaging additional than 6 operates for each match. Giancarlo Stanton is mashing — only at the time in his occupation has he had additional residence operates right before the All-Star Split than this year’s 26. And at 26 decades previous, Marcell Ozuna is getting the breakout year several predicted. He is now tied his occupation higher in residence operates for a year and made his 2nd All-Star group. And with the 2nd-most straightforward timetable in the 2nd half, they have a shot at their to start with winning year since 2009. — John Fisher, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 39-forty seven Week 13 position: No. 21
Who would have ever imagined that Mets pitchers would have an Period near 5.00 at the All-Star Split? Just one of the number of pitchers trending the ideal way is free of charge agent-to-be Addison Reed, who has converted nine straight help save odds and has an Period of 1.06 in his previous fifteen appearances. Which is needed for the reason that Reed’s results could aid the Mets replenish their farm system throughout a trade deadline-7 days fire sale. — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 39-forty eight Week twelve position: No. twenty
The Tigers are mired in a 11-twenty run throughout which they have been amid the worst teams in the league in operates scored and Period, which is pretty considerably a formulation for failure. Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez have all observed their OPS drop additional than one hundred details from past 12 months. It not for viewing Michael Fulmer pitch each individual fifth working day, Tigers lovers would not have considerably to glimpse forward to. — Michael Bonzagni, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 42-46 Week 13 position: No. 19
The Orioles at the break this year are a incredibly distinct group than past 12 months. They’re 42-46, fourth in the American League East. At the break past 12 months, they were 51-36, the 3rd-finest group in the AL and the division leaders in the East. Just one massive unique modify? Mark Trumbo. He had an MLB-leading 28 residence operates in the to start with half past year he has just fourteen this year. — Sarah Langs, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 38-49 Week 13 position: No. 24
As the weather conditions — and the trade rumors — start heating up, Todd Frazier has done his finest to have the White Sox lineup, publishing a .923 OPS since June 1. A free of charge agent at the conclusion of this year, Frazier stays a vital bargaining chip for the rebuilding White Sox to dangle at the deadline for needy contenders, along with closer David Robertson and starter Jose Quintana. — Paul Hembekides, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 39-49 Week 13 position: No. 26
Joey Votto enters the All-Star break with a 1.058 OPS, the 3rd-maximum mark in Reds heritage (trailing just Tony Perez in 1970 and Eric Davis in 1987). Cincinnati continues to build towards the long term, as it signed its to start with-round decide Hunter Greene to a deal that includes a $7.23 million signing reward (the maximum in the reward-pool draft era). — Paul Hembekides, ESPN Stats & Information
History: 39-fifty Week 13 position: No. 27
