Finn: so chief Ira! I'm so excited to work with you!
Chief: sure thing Berry... Spill it.
Finn: I was just wondering what's your position on coworkers having romantic relationships?
Chief: yeah yeah it's pretty obvious how you look at detective Morález. Here's my position: you're here to work. Whatever you all do on your spare time does not concern me. With that being said: get to work right now, Berry!

Following Atlanta United’s disappointing 4-1 loss to Toronto FC on Decision Day presented by AT&T — a result that saw them lose the Supporters’ Shield to the New York Red Bulls — “Tata” Martino is keen to see his team bounce back in the first leg of their Audi 2018 MLS Cup…

Martino wary of Villa, Moralez as Atlanta United prepare for NYCFC
USA Today Images
November 2, 20184:00PM EDT
Following Atlanta United’s disappointing 4-1 loss to Toronto FC on Decision Day presented by AT&T — a result that saw them lose the Supporters’ Shield to the New York Red Bulls — “Tata” Martino is keen to see his team bounce back in the first leg of their Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs series against New York City FC this Sunday (7:30 pm ET | FS1, TSN, TVAS).
So how does Martino, who admitted that he had choice words for his side’s performance at halftime of Sunday’s loss, get his team feeling confident again?
“My role is to help the team see the forest and not just the trees,” he explained Friday through a translator. “The forest is that we had 69 points this season, a record number of away points, 21 wins, the most points over two years, a spot in Concacaf Champions League and scored the most goals this season. That’s the positive. The negative is Sunday, and no one’s hiding that. We didn’t play well, but my job is to see the big picture.”
While Atlanta must bounce back mentally, Martino has another conundrum on his hands: stopping David Villa, Maxi Moralez and the NYCFC attack. Martino identified Moralez as the focal point of NYCFC’s attack.
“We have to be conscious of Moralez when we’re attacking so that he’s not in a position to receive an outlet pass and start their attack. When he’s on the ball, we have to surround him,” said Martino.
Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, one of Atlanta’s defenders that will be crucial to stopping the league’s strongest home team, knows his side will need to be sharp in the Bronx to return to Atlanta with a first-leg result they can feel good about.
“They have excellent players, starting in midfield, and they have very good forwards as well,” Gonzalez Pirez told reporters through a translator. “Villa is one of the best in the league at his position, Maxi Moralez is having a great season and [Ismael] Tajouri-Shradi is really dangerous going forward and he’s been playing well for them. We know that we have to be up to the level of this game. They will make it difficult to defend, but we have to do our best to try to slow those guys down.”
After such a disheartening result last weekend, Atlanta’s players and coach are all saying the right things to facilitate a bounce-back performance. But do they really believe it?
“We’ll see on Sunday,” said Martino.

Since midfielder Yangel Herrera returned to the pitch in a sky blue kit ahead of schedule from what seemed to be season-ending ankle surgery, NYCFC have seemingly shape-shifted back to the title contending team of the season’s first few months.
On Halloween, NYCFC beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1 in the first Knockout Round game of the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs. Herrera’s footprint was left all over the field, completing 84 percent of his passes with three tackles, three interceptions, two fouls won, only two fouls committed and 13 ball recoveries.
His impact was felt by Union coach Jim Curtin, who was effusive in his praise of the 20-year-old after the game.
“The kid, Herrera, he’s a top player,” Curtin said. “Not just in our league, he’s a top player. He can play in any league, anywhere. For a [20-year-old] off of a five, six month injury, to step into games and playing [170] minutes in two days, you can see how valuable he is to their group.”
Herrera, alongside Alex Ring and Maxi Moralez, helped dominate the game’s most valuable real estate on a tight pitch at Yankee Stadium. They made the midfield theirs, making life difficult for the Union’s engine room.
“Ring flies under the radar and Moralez,” Curtin said. “You put that three up against any midfield in the league and they’re playing with David Villa. It’s a handful for sure. It’s a team that can beat any team in our league certainly and obviously the home field advantage they have here is the best in the league.”
Moralez had a hand in all three goals on Wednesday night, scoring one and assisting two. It was nothing new for the diminutive star, who notched eight goals and 16 assists this season.
“He’s a handful,” Curtin said. “He’s confident right now, he has a way of moving on the field. He gets open while you’re in possession of the ball and then as soon as they break in transition, we didn’t do a good enough job locating him … You talk about a guy who can really change a game, change a team, and gives coaches nightmares just trying to deal with his mobility all over the field and his balance and center of gravity. It was too much for us tonight.”
Moralez, Herrera and Ring will need to be on form again when NYCFC host Atlanta United on Sunday for the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
