The Genius Verb Tense of "Moonwrapped" by Richard Edwards

The final track of Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset, Richard Edwards' first solo album, is "Moonwrapped". In this song, a musical journey of love, life, and loss is traveled through its 4:35 runtime in the most beautiful ways. A love letter to his past life, one with a wife, a daughter, a house, a stomach, a happiness, Moonwrapped is Richard Edwards saying his goodbye to that dream. This dream was a life he had for not long enough, and brutal disease and divorce took it away from him. Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset, in its entirety, explores such tragedy through and through, but it is Moonwrapped, one singular entity, that tackles this story with perfection, and the most brilliant aspect of it is its verb tense.

Throughout the song, Richard bounces around verb tense. "I need you now." "Well, I found you, and I kept you safe and sound." He uses both present and past tense and achieves a nonlinear narrative, as we know he wrote this post-divorce, but lines like "I'm happy living in a dream" suggest something different. This dream, the dream of a life with a family, was something he was happy living in for the time being, when it was real. When he could look out the window of his yellow Indianan house and see his daughter playing and not have to go far to see his wife. He's still dreaming of it, now.

The first lines he says, "Skinny little beach bum, flowers in your crown, where are you? I need you, now," give a clear indication that such a question and statement is post-waking up, but he weaves the rest of the lines back and forth through time. "We been stitched at the hip, why you pickin' at the seams?" "Why do you love me? I think you're insane." "I'm seeing things that I cannot explain..." This nonlinear narrative shouldn't make sense, but its perfect execution with the hazy instrumental of just his guitar, subtle female vocalists, and a small string quartet gives Moonwrapped the timelessness it embodies. Not an endurance or durability, but a sea, a limbo. Timelessness as a frontier only for drifting within. A river that starts, ends, and never ends, but at some point, he swam into it. "Hey Jelly, don't cry. Cuz' in the next life, there ain't no stomachs, and love don't die, it moves through time. It's always true." This is the line that explains the final line of the song, and the song in entirety. He promises his wife or his daughter or both of them at the same time that in time, this won't be the way it is. Stomach disease won't get in the way, and their love didn't fizzle or run out, it just ran away.

In the last minute and a half of the song, he repeats the title line in build up to the climax of the track, the most beautiful, most genius thing Richard has ever written, and it almost seems anticlimactic.

"I loved you. I always do."

He loved his wife. He loved his family. He loved that dream. Most people writing this would have put, "I always will" or, "I always did," but such a less meaningful statement it would make. When you listen to his voice say those last words, it even sounds like he's going to say, "did." But, he doesn't.

Yes, he loved her, but he always loved her. He always will love her, and he always loves her. He loved her. He always does. It was in the past, but that isn't past. He loved her in the past, he loves her in the future, and he loves her now, but all he has to say is "do" because there isn't any time but the "now". He's saying he loves her wherever that love is in time, which ties a bow on what Moonwrapped really is. A thesis that the love he shared for his family is untamed by time, and though he may say goodbye to the old dream, it's never going to say goodbye to him.

You know, all this talk about love and time makes me think of Anne Hathaway's character in Interstellar and that weird monologue she had. This is nothing like that. I swear.

Top 5 Swim Robes

Dryrobe

It calls itself the “warmest, most versatile changing robe in the world” and it is by far the most popular but also most expensive changing robe on the market. In many ways it has become a trend to wear a Dryrobe as a sign of outdoor activeness. It is quite bulky which is intended to facilitate changing while having the jacket on. Moonwrap

Moonwrap is a similar model to the Dryrobe but the cheaper version. However, compared to Dryrobes, Moonwrap changing robes only comes in one colour, being black. It is 100% water proof on the outside and lined with fleece inside. It only comes in one size and cut.

Aomednx

This brand’s changing robe is a cross between a Dryrobe and a Fit Flip. It has a waterproof shell but the inside is lined with a microfibre material. It is a lot less bulky than a Dryrobe or Moonwrap. It is lined with pockets and has full length sleeves. Price wise it is reasonable enough as it has both the towel and the waterproof features.
