"Was it worth it?"
Tumblr media
Just an illustration about Duck staring at his younger self, a 19-year-old engine driver known as Jacqueline Collett. Although Duck is currently 38, he thinks about who he used to be when he started to work at Paddington station. He thinks about how much he has changed in 19 years and how worthy it was.
There are no words to describe how good it feels...

Montague 'Duck' Collett, NWK (Northwestern Kingdom) No. 8
A prince hailing from the Great Western Kingdom. He's certainly proud of his heritage, and was called to the Northwestern Kingdom to help out. He has gotten into feuds with some of the royals there, such as Diesel, Thomas, and the Strike Trio, but overall, he's a very kind person who is willing to help out anyone in need.
Biography
Not much is known about where he came from, but he arrived from the Great Western Kingdom to assist the Northwestern Kingdom as a kingdom pilot at Tidmouth, but then later promoted to his branch at the town of The Little Western, where he works with Donald, Douglas, and Oliver.
Relationships
Donald: Duck's boyfriend who loves to tease and prank him. One such banter between the two has lead Donald to adopt a small white duckling named Dilly, who Donald is absolutely attached to. Together, they work together on the small town of The Little Western. On a few occasions, Duck has mistaken Douglas for his boyfriend when he wasn't wearing his nametag or number. It lead to some funny misunderstandings between the three.
Douglas: One of Duck's closest friends besides Donald, Oliver, and Toad. The two often see each other and greet each other, yet Duck is a little embarrassed to be around him because sometimes his tongue would slip and he would call Douglas a pet name, thinking that he's Donald. Despite this, the Scottish twins and Duck get along greatly and he's grateful to have them as friends.
Oliver: Duck's best friend. When they work together, they're an unstoppable duo. They love to pull pranks on the Strike Trio, and act like silly dumbasses when together. They work together on the Little Western together where they sometimes joke around and have juicy gossip about the people in the Kingdom or the commoners outside the kingdom. Nonetheless, they're both happy to have each other.
Toad: To others, Toad is just a mere butler with a nasal voice, yet Duck sees more to him than just a 'mere butler.' Toad is Douglas' butler, yet he treats him no different from a royal. He thinks Toad of a smart man, probably even smarter than most of the royals he works with. Though, he would just shrug it off and say that he's only doing his job, much to Duck's dismay.

Preview of the adaptation for Escape in my AU
Another day of autumn has arrived on Sodor and a pair of enthusiastic twins prepared themselves for another successful day of work. Donald, the older twin, was eating a slice of bread for breakfast when he looked at the calendar. It had been over a year since the twins were employed to work for Sir Topham Hatt after a month of hardship and confusion to make sure his younger brother Douglas was hired alongside him so they could stay together.
Donald’s roommate Montague Collett, or better known as Duck, entered the kitchen to put his lunch for work into his bag. Duck put his green jacket on he had carried over his shoulder. Looking at Donald he noticed, “Hey, Donald your tie is sloppy.” and went to him to fix his red tie for him,
“Ah, ta, Ducky.” Donald replied in his signature thick Scottish accent after swallowing the rest of his bread. “If ye hadn’t clocked, a’m sure Dougie wid hae.”
“And he would’ve teased you about your occasional sloppiness with your clothes.” Duck chuckled, “Now hurry up, or Douglas will tease you for being late.”
“Ah ken, ah ken. it isnae mah fault th’alarm failed. Juist wake me up neist time whin ye git up, Forordinar a’m th’earlie yin, dinnae forgoat.” Donald quickly got his own lunch and rushed into the bathroom to brush his teeth and short black hair and came out not even five minutes later, looking completely flawless.
“A’m finished ‘n’ duin tae gang!” Donald saluted with a wide grin.
In the time he knew the 21-year old Scotsman, Duck learnt to love his weird combination of being chaotic but reliable and professional at the same time. Duck felt weirdly nostalgic because of it despite only being one year older.
After saying their goodbyes to their pet duck, Dilly, the duo left their shared apartment and when walking across the hallway, they noticed a very familiar figure.
“Dougie!” Donald called out for his younger twin, who left his neighboring apartment shortly before them. Douglas looked identical to Donald, the exact same face and same black and red suit. The only way to tear them apart is their slightly different styled hair.
“Guid mornin’, dear brother.” Douglas greeted him calmly in his own thick accent, “‘N’ ye tae, Duck.”
Unlike Donald, Douglas was not chaotic at all, he was calm, avoided confrontations and was a bit clumsy but just as reliable and professional as his older twin. Douglas usually did not talk very much so the trio's walk to their workplace was mostly accompanied by the chatting of Donald and Duck with Douglas only joining in when directly addressed.
It was a day like any other and everything went just perfect as planned, much to the joy of the three, who each took their work very seriously and accepted nothing but perfection. Duck was talking about the Great Western he was so proud of again and Donald teased him about how he should make that his certified trademark with how much he would not shut up about it with Douglas just laughing about it in the background.
It was past 8 PM when it was finally quitting time. Donald, Douglas and Duck wanted to meet with some other colleagues at the pub in Arlesburgh until Donald received a call. He picked up and when he finished, he looked disappointed.
“What’s the matter?” asked Duck, who already headed to the car.
“‘Twas Sur Topham Hatt.” Donald sighed, “He wants me tae bring important documents that juist arrived ‘ere tae Haultraugh. Whit a pity, ‘n’ ah juist brought mah Caledonian intae th’shed…”
“Let me dae it.” Douglas suggested on the spot.
“Really?” Donald asked.
“No problem fur me. Ye ‘n’ th’ others make yersel’ a guid evenin. Ah wasn’t really feeling lik’ goin tae th’pub tae begin wi’.” He then turned to the man in green, “Aye, Duck kin ye len’ me yer car fur th’ hurl?”
“Sure thing, lucky I just refueled yesterday. If it gets too late, you can stay at a hotel, just call us when you do so Donnie doesn’t get a heart attack.” Duck approved.
“Ta, ye’r an angel.” Donald thanked his accommodating twin.
Douglas soon picked up the aforementioned documents and hopped into the car to head to Haultaugh so his brother and friends could have a good time.
It was already dark when he drove along a road that ran right next to an infamous forest. Douglas hated that forest despite never being in it. That forest had some suspicious rumors about it, on how time freezes in it, people going missing and never returning and a ghost woman in gold. And Douglas hated everything related to superstitions and the supernatural after his highly superstitious grandparents tried to kill him for being the younger twin as twins supposedly were a bad omen. If it weren't for Donald saving him, he would’ve been drowned in the bathtub by their heartless grandfather.
He couldn't help but scowl at such foolishness. Killing a child over such nonsense…you have to be a malicious person from the very start to even consider that. And right at this moment he scowled at this wretched forest and wanted to drive past it as soon as possible.
As if he had jinxed it, not long there were troubles with the car and it broke down. “Damn it, Duck! Should’ve made a full check up as weel” Douglas silently cursed when he exited the car and pulled out his cell phone to call his brother. But before he could do the latter, he saw something inside the forest.
It was a light, golden, mysterious and captivating.
Douglas thought he was tired and imagining things so he closed his eyes and rapidly shook his head to make it go away. But when he looked again the light was still there and brighter than before. it somehow felt like it was calling for him. to come into the forest to reach it.
Was that the myth of the golden ghost woman that kidnapped people? Nonsense. That was just a myth and myths aren’t real, they were just made up from human imagination. It was not real. It was not real! It was not real? But if it was not real, then why did he see it? Why was it calling for him? Why did it make him feel he was needed there? He did not understand and he denied, he denied and denied and denied even more. He did not see anything. He just wanted to call his brother and do his job. This light. It needs to stop calling for him! It needs to leave him alone! It does not exist! This light. This light. This light. This light. This cured golden light!
Douglas felt like he was losing his mind until something snapped in him and he returned back to reality but something was wrong, the moment his head was clear again, he found himself in the midst of the forest.
“Sin whin did ah gang ben ‘ere ‘n’ why?” he quietly asked himself as he looked around and realized just how deep inside the forest and completely and utterly lost he was.
He had no idea how he ended up there and was genuinely questioning his sanity when he urgently grabbed his chest as the feeling of lacking oxygen came over him. Douglas leaned on a tree for support when he was bathed in cold sweat and gasping for air, realizing he was having a panic attack.
He did not want to become one of the many people that went lost and never returned, he wanted to go home. He did not care if his brother might tease him a bit for getting in a situation this ridiculous, he just wanted his brother.
He felt his sight fading black and gravity dragging his body to the ground, his consciousness fading away, until he felt someone catching him. Douglas was positioned to sit down and felt someone’s hand on his forehead. The hand’s gentleness helped him calm down and soon he could breathe steadily again.
“He’s calming down, Mr Oliver.” Douglas heard a man’s voice saying.
“Thank God.” The other man, the one holding him replied with relief.
Douglas finally managed to open his eyes and was able to see two men standing in front of him. The one in the background was a slim and small man with dark gray unkempt hair. The man right in front of him was taller than Douglas with a broad build, and also unkempt hair that was dark brown and reached over his shoulders. His eyes were green, a few shades darker than Duck’s, more emerald green-like. Both’s clothes were very shaggy and they had many stubbles as if they hadn’t had any chance to shave in a while.
“Are you alright?” The taller man asked in a smooth deep voice. “Yes…I think so..thank ye so much.” Douglas tried to be as polite as possible in his situation.
“You’re welcome,” he answered gently, “I was actually considering leaving you behind due to our circumstances but seeing how genuine your distress was, I just could not look away.”
This answer confused Douglas a bit as he did not know about said circumstances but he appreciated the help regardless.
“You are from here?” he was asked.
“Nae completely. Ah moved ‘ere ainlie a year ago. Ah wirk fur Sur Topham Hatt ‘n am proud o’it.” he forced a smile when he explained.
“I see, I see…you’re originally from Scotland, aren’t you?” the large man concluded with Douglas confirming it.
“Figured. That was the thickest Scottish accent I’ve ever heard in my life.” The man chucked, which made Douglas chuckle himself.
For a moment the Scotsman completely forgot about his dire situation and thought it would be better to learn more about the two individuals that found him before acting any further, “Douglas McIntosh is th’name. Wha urr ye twa?”
“I am Tyler Swindon! But you can call my Toad, Mr Douglas!” The smaller man introduced himself politely.
“And I am Oliver.” the taller man replied, Douglas noticing a slight grimace at the moment Oliver mentioned his name.
“Ne lest name?” Douglas raised an eyebrow.
“I don’t really want to talk about it.” Oliver sighed and Douglas changed the subject, “Ah git lost ‘ere oot o’ a moment o’ unexplained lack o’ common sense. How come urr ye ‘ere?”
Oliver hesitated for a moment, thinking of a proper response.
“I think we can trust him, Mr Oliver.” Toad said sincerely, “He’s from here and he seems to be a very nice and trustworthy person.”
Oliver agreed with Toad and took a deep breath before responding with a serious glare:
“Escaping.”
“Fae whit?”
“Assassination.”

Beware of Montague Collett. He may seem like any hardworking train driver on Northern Western Railway, but once he has his axe out, you better run. An encounter with him can be frightening and fatal...
Duck doesn’t seem too worried about it though.
Happy Birthday @bruhstation !

NWR Number Eight (GWR 5741):
Montague "Duck" McIntosh (neè Collett)
WARNING: GENDER IDENTITY HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
So, here is my design for Duck McIntosh - formally known as Montague Collett - the GREAT WESTERN engine. Currently, due to enforced gender dysphoria during their formative years, Duck is making temporary use of they/them pronouns while they come to terms with being able to express their gender. Duck is married to Donald, with whom they live on the Arlesbrough branch line (Aka the "Little Western") alongside Douglas, Oliver, and Toad. They have two children with Donald - Grace and Austin.
Duck was one of many near-identical siblings on the GREAT WESTERN railway and worked for much of their life at Paddington Station in London. Unfortunately, the controller of the time did not believe that his engines should express individuality and behave like the machines they were. He refused to refer to them as anything beyond "it" and "them" and actively discouraged any form of individual expression - including gender and especially romantic attachments.
Duck is, unfortunately, a very compliant engine with an almost religious reverence for rules and procedures, proving very easy to indoctrinate into the GREAT WESTERN Ways. As such, Duck believed themselves to be happy and proud to be a part of the GWR. Even if subconsciously, they knew something wasn't right.
Perhaps this is why Duck was willing to move to Sodor, where they soon proved to be a valuable - if somewhat forthright and annoying - addition to the North Western Railway. It was here that Duck began to notice the use and acceptance of gender by the other engines.
However, this did not come to a head until the arrival of Donald and Douglas. Instantly befriending the two, Duck began to develop an unfamiliar... "attachment" to them both. Completely uncertain even as to what they were feeling, let alone what to do about it, many frustrating years passed before Donald literally forced the issue of the now very serious feelings growing between them. With patient encouragement from Donald and his twin, Duck fell in love with and married Donald. Fortunately, the arrival of Oliver and Toad helped the twins to understand Duck's gender confusion and help them through it.
Duck is very hardworking, loyal to their friends, and is trying to be more mindful of their GREAT WESTERN pride. They are still very good friends with Percy, but have a very frosty relationship with Thomas. After a rocky start, Duck has settled into their life on Sodor with their North Western Railway family, diesels, and steam engines alike.
There is still a lot of bad blood between Duck and Diesel, but it seems that both have reached an unspoken agreement to not acknowledge the existence of one another as much as they can.

Duck when he was 19-20 years old working at Paddington station💚🦆🚂
Tumblr media
By that time, he was known as Jacqueline (Jackie for short). He was perceived as a woman by his coworkers and family. Although he never felt connected with his assigned gender at birth, it took him two more years to realize that he was trans (and started his transition some time after that) 👀

I'm interested in what the trains in your humanization prefer to eat (What if Henry loves apple charlottes?)
yes!!! eating is one of life’s biggest joys! always love talking and learning about food and watching people cook and eat and express their happiness, so this was a fun one to answer.
thomas a. billington: thomas needs something to chew or suckle on in the break room. think of any candy that your grandma would store on her detailed glass bowl. tootsie rolls, werther’s hard caramel candy, jolly ranchers… you get it. he doesn’t have any particulars when it comes to filling dishes and most of his diet consist of snacks and candies hence his thinner and shorter build.
edward pettigrew: he loves a good hot black tea with a side of rich tea biscuits or scones. he’s the guy who knows too much about tea. stomach ache? ginger tea. sleep aid? chamomile’s the way. for the more filling dishes, edward prefers light savory dishes with feta cheese involved. he’s really fond of fërgesë from his home country, but there’s no place on sodor that could make a mean one, so he settles with making it at his own home.
henry stanier: sliced apples! when he’s in a good mood, he’d shape them into little bunnies. he likes anything savory with a strong taste too, like his mother’s curry. henry loves a full course, hearty meal that tastes and feels good, and growing up, he’s always had a large appetite (fast metabolism). henry doesn’t like anything greasy or deep fried because it’ll make his stomach acid flare up. I had to look up what apple charlottes is, and yeah, I can tell you that henry would love it.
gordon j. gresley: gordon has a sweet tooth but he’s self conscious about it and has an image to uphold so he’ll tell anyone who’s making him coffee to make it black (he adds a packet of cream and sugar when nobody’s seeing) without anything added (his friends see right through him). his favorite dessert is orange float with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. gordon also likes food that is usually eaten together with friends or family (something something lazy susan) like pork roast or kway teow or thick beef stew with mashed potatoes. big portions are necessary!
james a. hughes: sweet margarita is james’ favorite drink to have during outings with his friends. he also loves a good french onion soup, especially paired with croutons (do not make them too hard or he’ll riot!!). speaking of croutons, james loves fondue and he always fights over it with thomas. really, any food that looks good and makes him look well-off would be on his favorites list (please, james, why does most of these dishes involve alcohol in one way or another). he also likes sweet danish pastries.
percival “percy” avonside: he’s a simple man when it comes to food he likes. sandwiches are the way to go! carbohydrates, proteins, the tasty stuff — it’s all there! eggs benedict (he puts another english muffin on top so the sauce won't spill everywhere) is his most favorite since it makes him feel special and fancy. percy also loves good coffee, usually mixed with condensed milk or mocha, since he delivers the night mail train.
tobias “toby” holden: tiramisu is his favorite dessert and he prefers it made with more coffee content. he has helped out henrietta many times with making it to the point he’s has the process memorized. for savory dishes, he loves some good lasagna with extra beef content in the sauce. it’s gotta drench. really, toby loves his layered food huh
montague “duck” collett: he’s not picky when it comes to food given to him, so he just eats what any average joe would eat (eggs on toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, sausage with potatoes and peas for dinner). normal person food. duck makes sure he has his meal three times a day and follows the motto; “eat before you’re hungry, stop before you’re full.” also diesel made mango panna cotta once for him as a desperate token of apology and duck fell in love with it.
donald and douglas dunalastair: like thomas, they don’t really have much preference for filling meals. dessert, though? now that’s the stuff. donald loves cranachan so SO much he wishes he could eat it every day. douglas likes candies more instead of softer, silkier desserts, like black licorice or peppermint candy. they also eat only twice a day since they get full super quickly. amazing how so much strength for shoveling snow is stored behind their lanky bodies. they also drink irn bru
oliver t. swindon: oliver loves shepherd's pie because it’s practical. everything he needs is right there, fitting for someone who doesn’t like complicated things. as for the sweet stuff… even after forgetting some of his memories after his rescue, oliver remembers the feeling and taste of halo-halo on his tongue clearly, something he missed dearly.
giovanni vin diesel: diesel loves bruschetta. he puts some pepper flakes on top for that spice kick. he also loves sfincione, specifically the way his family would make it, but, like edward, nobody on sodor knows how to cook a decent one (too much sauce, too thick of a bread, or too soggy) which makes him a bit sad. diesel’s kind of picky when it comes to the meals he can consider “favorite” because he believes he’s the most qualified in the culinary field on sodor due to his upbringing.
mavis hawthorne: a slice of blackforest cake always makes her heart sing. not too heavy on the whipped cream, though, because she doesn’t like her desserts too sweet. she also likes baumkuchen. whenever toby cooks lasagna, he’d make another portion to give to mavis, which quickly became her favorite and something she looks forward to during lunch breaks.
rebecca nassif: rebecca likes snacking a lot. she finds joy in eating! she grew up surrounded by meals. like diesel, because of her upbringing, she’s always been an enthusiast of not only food, but culinary arts as a whole. she loves cold desserts that usually remind her of her old neighborhood like this pistachio kulfi that she would made when she was younger. rebecca also missed having knafeh and mafruka since moving to sodor (it’s been like... a week.)
nia e. wanjala: whenever nia feels like treating herself to something good, she’d make her own version of the gatsby sandwich at her house. she’s especially keen on the french fries and enjoys extra hot sauce with it. it’d take two meal times for her to finish it all. lately, nia’s also been enjoying pastries like chocolate muffins and bombolone (chocolate fillings are her favorite).
lady: as part of her mission to understand humanity and their intrapersonal relationships, lady developed an affinity to eating. she’d eat anything as long as it’s acceptable by human standards even though she doesn’t have to. lady wants to understand that people eat not only to survive but as a way to show their love and culture. isn’t the greatest blessing to be bestowed upon living things the ability to consume to their heart’s content? does her lack of mortal needs indicate her lack of personal desire? anyways her favorite foods are fish and chips with sweet mayonnaise on the side and soft serve vanilla ice cream.
diesel 10: his go-to is black coffee mixed with red bull (added with some other weird concoction if he feels like it). some scrambled eggs with a dash of hot sauce for breakfast. some fried bacon if he has some self respect for the day. some dried sardines if he wants to feel miserable. some baklava with extra syrup and pistachio if he wants to treat himself because the sound of the crunch eases his stress
