Hello! I’m really excited about this zine, but I’ve noticed it’s one of at least 3 potential side order zines! (Back for Seconds, Encore Pwease, Monochrome Walker)

In my experience, having a lot of different zines for the same thing running at the same time doesn’t go well. Potential buyers won’t buy all of them, so sales are split. There can also end up being a lot of overlap between zines in terms of contributors, making things seem too similar. I really hope that doesn’t happen here.

Is there any chance your mod team would consider merging with the one or more of the other zines to create one big cohesive zine?

We might think about it but to be honest I'm not really interested in doing that T_T I'm not sure how I would go about contacting people to do that, plus I think I would be kind of intimidated being on a huge mod team if that happened lol

Of course, this might change in the future, but that's how I feel about it for now ... Very sorry if that's disappointing at all

Nobody is required to specify their exact age to participate, we only require confirmation that you're over 13 for adherence to Discord's ToS. As for zine proceeds, they will be donated to either PCRF or Food Baskets for Gaza, contributors will vote on which charity once we bring them in.

Page artists draw a single page for the zine, and spot artists draw smaller illustrations to accompany writing. We grouped the two together on the interest check since we plan on having page artists also be able to do spot art if they wish.

No, current zine participation will not affect your application! As long as you are able to finish your work in time for both zines, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

A zine is a fanmade publication compiling fanart, writing, and other fanmade works into a book! For Monochrome Walker, we’re specifically focusing and art and writing about Side Order, and compiling our contributor works into a digital zine.

Nope. We solely accept applicants based on the work in their portfolio- not by their experience with other zines.

No, Monochrome Walker isn't planning to invite any guest artists to the zine. However, if you do have any artists you would like to see in the zine, they can apply like the rest of our contributors. Consider sharing our project around!

For artists, we are looking for a collection consisting of at least 5 pieces of your work, at least one of which must have a detailed background. For writers, we are looking for at least 5 pieces as well, with each piece being 5,000 words or less (total word count across pieces is allowed to exceed 5k). We allow excerpts of larger works as examples as long as the excerpts are 5k words or shorter.

No, as long as you have at least one piece showing that you can draw full backgrounds you will be fine.

Contributor applications will open on May 30th!

Thank you for your concern! The mod team is fully aware of these Side Order zines being developed, and has considered the implications of multiple projects with the same theme running at the same time. After some deliberation, we’ve decided to move forward with our Side Order theme.

We absolutely do not hold any ‘competitive’ mindset or intentions towards other Side Order zines present or future. Why would we? As Splatoon fans and Side Order enthusiasts, we fully intend to support the development of any and all Side Order content being created, and enthusiastically encourage all potential contributors and buyers to do the same. Not only are we honored to be considered alongside these projects, but find it pretty stellar that all our teams had the same idea at the same time. Great minds think alike!

Though our zines do have the same core theme, they’re already very clearly distinct in their contributor amount, application requirements, mod teams, and even artistic focus. Monochrome Walker looks to give contributors a platform to share their ideas and interpretations of the DLC in whatever way they see fit. We can guarantee the zine we make will be a loving tribute to Side Order that’s unique in its expression.

With this decision, we also want to encourage anyone with a zine project they’d like to bring to fruition to pursue it without hesitation— if there’s a theme you want to see explored, we would be overjoyed to know that our passion project inspired another Splatoon zine!
