Misconceptions about living in the country

Strike me pink, you wouldn't believe the misconceptions that people have about living in a small town. I live in the seaside town of Kingston in South East South Australia and I couldn't imagine living anywhere but in the country!

There is nothing else I love more than riding to school every morning on my friendly pet kangaroo, Boris.

I love the feeling of wind through my hair as I hop along the dusty dirt road to school every morning.  Finding a spot to park in the morning is a bit of a worry because Boris is a bit of a ladies' man. School is always a bit of a laugh. For example, last week when our class was milking the brown snakes, Caleb was bitten.  You should have seen his face - it was as though he thought he was going to die or something!

School's not all good though.  It's a bit of a bummer in summer because everyone is crammed into the one small school shed. Don't even get me started on the smell! Not only does it attract the flies but also the dingos - which is a downer because they eat all the snags. It's amazing to think that this is what some city dwellers and international visitors actually come to expect when visiting my town. But this stereotype is definitely incorrect! Kingston isn't very big. It has a population of under 3000 people.  However, this does not mean it's a ghost town. My town has two supermarkets, a few fast food places and road houses. Its claim to fame is the Big Lobster. Our school isn't tiny and we definitely have more than one small classroom. My school has around 400 pupils and it offers a range of interesting and challenging subjects. Although we don't have great shopping malls and thousands of people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. Growing up in a small town is amazing because everybody knows and cares for each other.

In a sense, they are all like your extended family.
